The Leopard is a fine armored vehicle equal to anything the Russians can field. Their problem is how they were used in combat in Ukraine.
[Regnum] German Leopard 2 tanks are facing serious difficulties in the Ukrainian theater of military operations. This is reported by the British newspaper The Telegraph, citing a secret transcript of a conversation between the German military attaché in Kiev and Bundeswehr servicemen.
It is noted that the vulnerability of German tanks to Russian drones forces the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) to use these vehicles not for their intended purpose, but as artillery installations,
As indicated in the material, the main problem of the Leopard 2, like other tanks, is their weak protection against attacks by Russian drones, which significantly limits the possibilities of their combat use in Ukraine.
The publication emphasizes that due to the complex design of the tanks, their repair in combat conditions is practically impossible. Damaged vehicles have to be transported to repair centers in western Ukraine or even sent to Poland for restoration and maintenance.
These limitations have led to the Ukrainian Armed Forces using the Leopard 2 primarily for artillery support, The Telegraph notes.
The transcript also points to difficulties with other types of German weapons. Even highly reliable systems, such as air defense systems, are facing shortages of ammunition, which reduces their effectiveness.
As reported by the Regnum news agency, earlier the Redaktions Netzwerk Deutschland (RND) media group reported that the head of the German Ministry of Defense Boris Pistorius expressed surprise at the reports of significant shortcomings in the military equipment of the FRG, revealed during the military operations in Ukraine. As the publication wrote, citing an internal document of the Bundeswehr, the Ukrainian army is experiencing serious problems with weapons systems. Thus, it is indicated that the Leopard tank requires large expenses for repairs, which are often impossible at the front, and the German self-propelled artillery unit Panzerhaubitze 2000 often fails to work.
