Delta Air Lines flight upside-down after crash at Toronto Pearson International Airport |
2025-02-18 |
[NYPOST] Three passengers on a Delta Air Lines flight including a child were critically injured when the plane crash-landed and flipped upside-down at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday. Flight records identify the craft as Delta Flight 4819, which took off from Minneapolis about 11:47 a.m. The crash happened just before 3 p.m. Images show the mangled airliner smoldering on the snowy runway as dazed passengers scrambled out. The belly-up jet looked badly damaged in photos and video circulating on social media, with one wing severely crumpled and the tail section partially sheared off. |

#20 A/c landing w/crosswind from the right side of it, do a bit of right wing down to counter would be normal. Structural analysis will reveal if the force of the rightgear hitting hard initiated the separation of the right wing, but won’t surprise me if that’s the case. The sparks from the right gear is likely the steel brake discs hitting the concrete after the tires blew/shredded and wheel damaged/fractured. Wheel and brake housing are aluminum so no sparks from them. Cabin interior looks amazingly intact, for all the impact forces; anticipated seats ripped from floor, overhead bins dislodged. And everybody survived. ‘Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing: being able to reuse the airplane is a bonus.’ One out of two. |

#18 Besoeker, in 1956 at the age of 10, I used to ride the train, alone, from Oregon to Chicago then to Missouri. Conductors of the Masonic Lodge got me there and back. I Learned about Butch and Sundance from a retired RR worker. Modern is not better! |

#17 The plane looks pretty good for being upside down. Compliments to the guys at Bombardier for installing all the fasteners and torquing them down. |

#16 The cause could end up being something none of us are thinking about My first thought, when I saw the explosion before the starboard engine hit the ground, was a shoulder fired missile from the parking lot. But that's just me. |

#15 The number of Airline incidents, in just the last few weeks, is statistically strange. Also known as the neglect threshold trigger. Thanks Pete. Duffy blasts Buttigieg, accusing Biden-era official of 'mismanagement': 'Mayor Pete failed for four years...' |

#13 I don't care if I never get on another airplane. I don't blame Trump. I just never liked air travel anyway. |

#12 In the late 70s on a flight to Chicago my plane was diverted because of weather. As we were landing, I looked out the window and saw the wing tip slowly dip until it was about a foot off the ground. I am sure that Storm winds caused this. My plane landed safely, the one in this story might have had the same type of problem after the bounce. |

#11 Red State has video from another perspective, and discusses the technicalities revealed: On the surface, that was a hard landing, and the flight data recorder is no doubt going to tell a very interesting story. There didn't appear to be much of any flare (in layman's terms, when you lift the nose of the aircraft higher to soften the touchdown) as they got over the landing point. Some have noted the gear collapsed, which it absolutely did, but the plane rebounded upon touchdown beforehand. That points to the gear collapsing because the landing was so hard, not because of any mechanical defect beforehand. The right wing then strikes and sheers off, causing the plane to begin to roll over on itself. That's how it ended up on its back when it came to rest. The fact that everyone survived and only 18 people were injured is a testament to how tough the CRJ design is. I don't know the exact Vref (calculated landing speed for final approach) they were flying, but at touchdown, with no real flare to bleed off speed, they were likely around 130 knots. That's a ton of energy to dissipate in a crash. Advertisement How did this happen? That's going to be something the NTSB dives into. Causes could range from pilot error over a variety of matters to some kind of unforeseen mechanical issue that didn't emerge until they were meant to flare the aircraft. Many have mentioned the wind, though that will likely still end up logged under pilot error. If you've ever followed NTSB reports, there aren't many things pilots are allowed to use as an excuse for crashing, and if wind shear is experienced, an immediate go-around is the required action. No go-around was even attempted in this case. We'll see where this leads, though. The cause could end up being something none of us are thinking about, and the NTSB are magicians when it comes to figuring this stuff out. Given the breadth of data they'll have to work with, I don't think they'll have any issues with this case. |
