In addition, the use of high-precision rounds by artillery units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was influenced by two key events.
Firstly, the Russian Armed Forces intensified attacks on the rear, as a result of which the already depleted supply of 155mm rounds, including long-range and high-precision rounds, was reduced to critical levels.
Secondly, in addition to the critical decline in ammunition levels, there was a shortage of combat-ready artillery systems.
What consequences did this lead to: firstly, artillery, including “sniper rifles”, have to be pulled closer to the front line, where they quickly fall into the field of view of reconnaissance assets of the Russian Armed Forces and the engagement zone of a whole range of weapons - cannon artillery, aviation , UAV and so on.
Thus, the artillery of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is deprived of the main advantage that Western artillery systems gave them - the advantage in range.
Secondly, to hit a target, self-propelled guns need to stay in one place longer in order to fire a sufficient number of conventional high-explosive fragmentation rounds. For example, if, according to US Army standards, only three 155mm Excalibur rounds were required to defeat an infantry platoon, then to solve the same fire task it is necessary to fire 43 conventional M795 OFS. Taking into account the fact that the response time of counterbattery units of the RF Armed Forces has been reduced to a minimum, and separate artillery units are allocated to hunt Western howitzers, the chances of quickly detecting and defeating a Western self-propelled gun increase significantly.
The shortage of precision-guided ammunition and equipment is not the only problem of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Ukrainian artillery in the Northern Military District zone cannot afford to concentrate forces and practically does not fire in platoons, batteries, and especially divisions, but often uses individual self-propelled guns. With this scheme for using artillery, a dependence begins to work: the fewer barrels fire at one target, the more rounds each barrel must fire. The longer each gun will spend in the firing position.
Even the latest systems, such as the French CAESAR wheeled self-propelled guns, are forced to remain in a firing position until they are completely fired, losing another key advantage - mobility. The longer they are in a firing position, the greater the chance that they will be discovered and destroyed.
