Billion-dollar supersize prisons are slated to be built across the U.S. |
2023-10-15 |
[Newsbreak] Alabama, Nebraska, and Georgia are among states embarking on ambitious plans to construct new, costly prisons in an effort to alleviate issues of overcrowding, unsanitary conditions, and inadequate mental health resources in existing facilities. The Alabama Corrections Institution Finance Authority approved a historic $1.08 billion budget for a 4,000-bed prison, while Nebraska is building a $350 million, 1,500-bed facility, and Georgia aims for a $1.69 billion, 4,500-bed replacement for its current jail. Proponents argue these measures will enhance public safety and address urgent concerns within the penal system. However, critics, including prison reform advocates, argue that constructing new prisons without addressing underlying systemic issues is a short-term solution. They emphasize the need for meaningful rehabilitation and reforms aimed at reducing incarceration for minor infractions and expediting processing times for inmates. These advocates contend that the focus should be on addressing root causes rather than merely expanding bed capacity. Bianca Tylek, executive director of Worth Rises, highlights the concern that an increase in beds could lead to more individuals being incarcerated, emphasizing that the problem lies within the system itself, not the infrastructure. Critics also express dismay at the high costs and question whether the funds could be better allocated to address pressing issues like poverty and food insecurity, especially in economically disadvantaged regions. |

#13 Ref #10 above. CCPOA (California Correctional Peace Officers Association) and SEIU run the demokrat party in CA. And their members are well paid, and the union dues ensure serious money for the party. |

#10 If you have correctional facilities. You will have correctional officers. Don't let them be state employees or have a union that has any clout at state gummint level. |
