You paid back the support you received as a child by supporting your aged parents in their dotage ...so children were a long-term investment. Today with guaranteed government largess paid by Other Peoples Money™ a child is something between a 'vanity pet' and a 'nuisance' for many adult couples. Of course in the Good Olde Days orphans often ran in feral packs in the larger cities surviving (or not!) on petty crime... |

| #7 Since this is happening in first world countries one might consider another explanation. The 'Greatest Generation' was born during a period when infant mortality was although historically normal was very high in today's perspective. Every generation since then has suffered less and less of the effects of natural selection that occurred before them. That leaves us today with a population that most likely would not have gotten much beyond late adolescent let alone childhood. |
