Alabama prepares to execute death row prisoner by nitrogen hypoxia later this month but the technique has never been tried before with critics calling it 'human experimentation'

  • Nitrogen hypoxia is supposed to cause death by replacing oxygen with nitrogen, and has been authorized by Alabama and two other states for executions

  • The technique has never been used with lethal injection -- the preferred method

  • In a nitrogen hypoxia execution, the prisoner would breathe pure nitrogen, depriving his or her body of oxygen causing asphyxiation

  • Its proponents argue it is a more humane method of execution, but it cannot ethically be tested

  • Alan Eugene Miller is set to be executed later this month using the technique but says the state lost the paperwork selecting the alternate execution method

  • He is designated to die by lethal injection although a lawsuit has been launched
