- Donahue is the commander of the 82nd Airborne Division, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina
- His division is the nation's Immediate Response Force, and they are positioned to deploy anywhere in the world within 18 hours of notification
- Donahue has deployed 17 times in support of operations in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, and Eastern Europe
- He served in the special forces before studying at Harvard and working in the Pentagon as special assistant to the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff
- Donahue, a two star general, deployed to Afghanistan in mid August and was given the job of maintaining security at the airport
