Savage's Impulse Hog Hunter Featuring a Straight-Pull Bolt

[Hunt365] Savage Arms started off 2021 by launching the Impulse line of rifles, and the immediate buzz was all about the straight-pull actions. None of that up and back with the bolt on an Impulse—just give the Impulse’s bolt a pull right back towards the shoulder, eject the spent brass, push forward and you are ready to shoot again.

Savage touted the straight-pull feature as a key for faster reloads. So, I requested a Savage Impulse Hog Hunter chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor to see just how fast that straight pull actually was and to rate the rifle’s overall performance.

#6 Sometimes people do things because they want to: Winchester Model 1887/1901 Shotgun."The Model 1887 was one of the first successful repeating shotguns. Its lever-action design was chosen at the behest of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, best known at the time as manufacturers of lever-action rifles such as the Winchester Model 1873. Designer John Browning suggested that a pump-action would be much more appropriate for a repeating shotgun, but Winchester management's position was that, at the time, the company was known as a "lever-action firearm company", and felt that their new shotgun must also be a lever-action for reasons of brand recognition."

#5 If reload speed is an issue, why wouldn't you get an automatic? (Myself, I shoot an '03 Springfield, so ignore what I say.)

#4 'Muscle Memory' from years with my .308 would tell me to try and break the straight-bolt anyway.

I'll stick with the Mauser action.

#2 I wonder if, when putting it in battery, it's possible to not move the bolt far enough forward to lock and not be aware of it. With a conventional bolt action, you know it's locked because you can't move the lever down at the end of travel unless you've got it all the way forward.
Anyway, still prefer side cockers - M1, M1A, like that.

#1 Higher pressure cartridges could be a challenge. Gotta love a Savage, but I'll stick with Mauser style locking lugs for now.
