[NTK]When President Trump delivered the annual State of the Union on Tuesday, he naturally cited the benefits that Americans had received during the first year of his presidency. In all, the president mentioned some version of the word “America” almost 90 times in his speech, but for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), this focus on the country Trump governs was “exclusionary.”A statement from Faiz Shakir, the national political director of the ACLU, attacked Trump’s America-centric speech as “exclusionary” in a statement.
“Tonight, President Trump said the word ‘America’ more than 80 times in his speech,” Shakir wrote. “Yet, after a divisive first year, we hear and feel how exclusionary that ‘America’ is, with policies that have harmed so many vulnerable American communities.”
