| Talk, Don't Bomb, Former U.N. Officials Urge in Appeal on Syria |

| [An Nahar] Former high-ranking U.N. officials urged the United States and others Monday to refrain from bombing Syria over a devastating chemical attack, and instead work harder to broker a political solution in the war-torn country. Former deputy chief of the United Nations ...the Oyster Bay money pit... Hans-Christof von Sponeck launched the appeal in Swiss daily Le Temps' online edition, with support from his former U.N. colleagues Denis Halliday, Said Zulficar, Samir Radwan and Samir Basta. "True courage does not consist in sending in cruise missiles, ... it consists in radically breaking from this murderous logic," wrote von Sponeck, who coordinated the U.N.'s humanitarian actions in Iraq from 1998 to 2000. Because I'm an old fart and my mind is mostly gone, that statement doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I'm trying to recall the instance when the Pencilneck regime talked instead of gassing. One side can radically break from the murderous logic all it pleases, but if the other side continues to kill people, they'll continue to be dead forever. The statement would thus seem to lack any vestige of the concept of justice or accountability. But nobody listens to me. I'm just an old crank. |
