| FAA Seeks To Close Security Gap in Aircraft Registration |

| The FAA lacks key information on the ownership of as many as 1/3 of the 357,000 private & commercial aircraft registered in the US due to defects in its database. Drug traffickers have used phony registration numbers to evade law enforcement & police have raided the wrong aircraft due to erroneous registration information. Up until now US aircraft registration with the FAA has been mandatory only on an initial sale with no requirement to update information as it changes. In 2007 the FAA warned that there was a large pool of registration numbers that could be used illegally due to defective records. Starting next year the FAA will cancel existing registrations & force aircraft owners to re-register. |
