Bad Guys Extort Teachers in Northern Mexico
2010-06-09
The leader of Mexico's teacher's union said in an education forum today that teachers are being extorted by organized crime.

Elba Esther Gordillo, president of the Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (SNTE), the Mexican teachers union, said these crimes have been reported in Oaxaca, Sinaloa and Juarez City. Authorities have intervened in such cases, she said, but extortion of educators is not considered a "general subject".

"There are threats, telephone calls to get to want to sell security, to those things, but nothing else", she said, hinting violence has not affected teachers so far.

Gordillo spoke in an interview following her presentation in an education forum sponsored by Mexican president Felipe Calderón.

Gordillo added some children have been affected by extortion by organized crime without elaborating. She characterized the situation as "lamentable".

Calderón addressed the subject of violence in schools in a speech before the panel today, pointing out that patrols near schools do not really help if these is violence between and against children.
