| Dubai court rejects appeal of man who raped, killed boy |

| [Dawn] A Dubai court has rejected the appeal of an Emirati man sentenced to death for raping and then murdering a four-year-old Pakistani boy, newspapers reported on Sunday. The man was sentenced to death on January 27 by lower court judge Fahmi Fahmi. Lawyer Abdullah al-Mudharreb argued before the appeals court that the man "requires social and psychological care more than he needs to be punished," Gulf News reported. Mudharreb said the man went through "difficult life conditions" including his mother dying when he was young, dropping out of school and alcoholism, the newspaper said. According to daily The National, the case will now go to Dubai's supreme court. The condemned man, 30, confessed during his initial trial to raping and murdering the boy in a mosque as worshippers offered prayers nearby on the first day of Eidul Azha on November 27. Although the United Arab Emirates has the death penalty on its statute book, executions are rarely carried out in the Gulf country. |
