[Al Arabiya Latest] United States Mideast envoy held talks with Israeli senior officials on Thursday to press the two-state solution, as police beefed up security in Jerusalem's Old City, following reports that Jewish extremists planned to rally on the al-Aqsa Mosque compound as Muslims hold prayers there.
U.S. envoy George Mitchell told Israel's ultranationalist Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman that Washington wants to see the creation of a Palestinian state.
"I reiterated to the foreign minister that U.S. policy favors, with respect to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a two-state solution which will have a Palestinian state living in peace alongside the Jewish state of Israel," Mitchell told reporters, with Lieberman at his side. |
