(AKI) - Members of the European Parliament on Thursday called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, an end to Israel's military action and a halt to rocket attacks by Hamas. The move came as fighting intensified in the war-torn territory and Israeli Defense Forces extended their penetration of Gaza City.MEPs are calling for a truce that could include the dispatching of a multinational presence. They also urged the Israeli authorities to allow media access to Gaza and a full resumption of adequate humanitarian aid.
"MEPs express their shock at the suffering of the civilian population in Gaza and deplore that civilian and UN targets have been hit during the attacks," said the resolution.
The resolution calls on Israel to fulfil its obligations under international law and international humanitarian law.
