At least two Palestinians were killed and three others were missing on Thursday when a tunnel they were digging beneath the Egyptian-Gaza border collapsed, medical workers said. Residents said the tunnel was meant to be used to bring goods into the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.
Many Gazans use tunnels to bypass an Israeli blockade that was tightened after Hamas Islamists seized the coastal strip last year. Israeli officials have said many of the tunnels are also used by militants to smuggle weapons from Egypt into Gaza.
