A sixth police officer has died of his wounds after a man with a knife ran amok at a police station in Shanghai on Tuesday morning, state media reported Wednesday. The five other officers were killed during the attack or died soon after from their wounds, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.
The man was arrested at the scene and was said to be seeking revenge after he was questioned at the police station last year for allegedly stealing bicycles, according to a report in the China Daily, quoting comments he made to the police. The suspect, Yang Jia, 28, is unemployed and originally comes from Beijing, Xinhua said.
A security guard was stabbed outside the police station before the man ran inside and stabbed nine police officers, state media have reported. Two of the police officers who died Tuesday were named as Fang Fuxin, 47, and Zhang Jianping, 48.
The China Daily says the inquiry is looking into how the man managed to kill so many officers inside a police station before he was finally subdued.
