After 31 years of teaching English, Jim Vincent, an associate professor of English studies at Robert Morris University, has noticed a trend found on college campuses across the country: More students have mental health issues. Campuses across the country have been working to try to identify and help students with mental health issues. A spring 2006 survey of nearly 95,000 students on 117 campuses paints this portrait:* Nearly half of the students felt so depressed it was difficult to function at least once during the prior academic year; 16 percent felt that way on at least five occasions.
* About 9 percent had seriously considered attempting suicide; about 1 percent had attempted it.
* Nearly two-thirds had felt things were hopeless at least once.
* More than 93 percent had felt overwhelmed by all they had to do at least once.
