North Korea heads a league table of the 10 most censored countries, according to a survey by the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists. The survey was based on a variety of criteria, including formal censorship, harassment of journalists, jamming of foreign news broadcasts and restrictions on internet access. "People in these countries are virtually isolated from the rest of the world by authoritarian rulers who muzzle the media and keep a chokehold on information through restrictive laws, fear and intimidation," said Ann Cooper, the CPJ's executive director.
