Illegal alien busted allegedly hauling enough fentanyl to potentially kill [NV] state's entire population ‐ twice
[FOX] An illegal immigrant pulled over for speeding in Nevada allegedly had enough fentanyl in his truck to kill millions, federal prosecutors say.

Francisco Joel Garcia Farias, 26, now faces federal drug-trafficking charges after a Lincoln County sheriff’s deputy stopped his pickup on a rural highway and a narcotics detection dog alerted to the vehicle, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada.

Inside, authorities say they found 13 large storage totes packed with approximately 30 pounds of suspected fentanyl and 677 pounds of suspected methamphetamine, a combined haul of more than 700 pounds.

"The massive scale of this seizure underscores the staggering volume of illicit narcotics flowing into our communities from transnational criminal organizations," said First Assistant U.S. Attorney Sigal Chattah for the District of Nevada.

"Fourteen kilograms of fentanyl alone represents approximately seven million potentially lethal two-milligram doses — enough to kill more than twice the population of Nevada — and, when combined with over 650 pounds of methamphetamine, represents an estimated street value of approximately $2 million," Chattah said.

Based on that lethal-dose estimate, the fentanyl could potentially kill nearly twice the population of Los Angeles, everyone in Indiana or roughly the entire population of Paraguay.
Why Paraguay? That’s about as useful as measuring distance in elephants.
"These staggering quantities reflect a blatant disregard for human life, driven purely by profit," Chattah said.

The Justice Department identified Garcia Farias as an illegal immigrant in its announcement of the charges.

The bust began Oct. 13 on U.S. Highway 93 near Ash Springs, Nevada, where a deputy saw the pickup traveling above the posted speed limit, according to prosecutors’ account of the criminal complaint.

#1  A quick internet search on his name did not reveal which gang he was running drugs for. How hard is it to manufacture fentanyl and meth?
Posted by: trailing wife || 10/16/2026 10:26 Comments || Top||

#2  [AI]
How hard is it to manufacture fentanyl and meth?

**Fentanyl and methamphetamine are relatively easy to manufacture**, requiring minimal specialized equipment, modest lab skills, and small volumes of precursor chemicals compared to plant-based drugs like cocaine or heroin.

### Fentanyl Production
**Fentanyl synthesis is notably efficient and scalable**, often described by illicit producers as being "as easy as making chicken soup."
* **Methods**: The dominant illicit method is the **Gupta method**, which requires only **three steps**, takes place at room temperature, and needs no specialized lab equipment.
* **Efficiency**: Small quantities of precursors can produce vast numbers of pills; a single cook in a clandestine lab can manufacture over **100,000 pills** in one day.
* **Complexity**: While the original Janssen method is complex and dangerous, the Gupta method allows for the production of over **650,000 different fentanyl analogues**, making it the preferred choice for modern trafficking organizations.

### Methamphetamine Production
**Methamphetamine production has migrated to the P2P-based method**, which has become the dominant technique in regions like Mexico.
* **Requirements**: This method requires precursors such as **1-phenyl-2-propanone (P2P)** and **methylamine**. While handling P2P requires some expertise to synthesize high-quality meth, it is more accessible than earlier methods.
* **Resources**: Unlike fentanyl, meth production sometimes requires larger volumes of chemicals and specific equipment, but it remains far less resource-intensive than cultivating coca or poppy plants.

### Supply Chain Dynamics
The primary challenge in manufacturing these drugs is **sourcing regulated precursors**, which are often shipped from **China and India** to clandestine labs in **Mexico**.
* **Evasion**: Traffickers frequently use **"pre-precursors"** or "immediate precursors" (like **ANPP** or **NPP**) to bypass strict regulations on fully controlled substances.
* **Concealment**: Because these chemicals are small, potent, and can be disguised as legitimate industrial goods, they are easily concealed in packages and smuggled through airports, allowing for rapid, large-scale production once they arrive.

#5  It’s intellectual curiosity only. None of us would actually do anything like that. I asked because I wondered the shipment was something a couple of entrepreneurial idiots undertook in the basement playroom while watching college football, or if it needed organization by a professional pharmacist/chemist/chemical engineer and a small factory with trained technicians and vetted raw materials in bulk.

In other words, would this have been the only shipment, or was the stuff being produced in batch lots, this being only one of many shipments on the road each day.

#3  Thousands march in Albanian capital as anti-government protests spread

TIRANA, Oct 16 (Reuters) - Thousands of young Albanians marched through Tirana on Friday, breaking some windows and traffic lights on the fourth day of an increasingly violent student-led campaign to force ‌Prime Minister Edi Rama to resign.

The demonstrations, which are spreading through the country, turned into a riot in the capital on Thursday, with protesters smashing windows, raiding a bank and clashing with police. They follow months of mostly peaceful demonstrations that the students say the government ignored.

"They are pushing us to the limits," said 19-year-old protester Enea, declining to give a second name for fear of arrest. He said his message to Rama was: "To resign as fast as possible before everything burns down."

The students accuse officials of corruption and neglecting education and say they are angry about the sale of pristine parts of Albania's coast to a luxury resort development backed by US President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.

The unrest is a challenge for Rama, who won a fourth term last year on promises to take Albania into the European Union and is aiming for membership as early as 2028.

"We will not bow to violence," he said on Facebook.

The students, many wearing masks, faced off against lines of riot police in front of the Education Ministry building. Some small businesses had their shutters down and notes on their facades saying: "We are with you. Do not damage our business all over the town."

Trans neo-Nazi teen accused of Hindu temple mass shooting plot will get hormone treatments in jail: judge
[FOX] A transgender 19-year-old who authorities say identified himself as a neo-Nazi allegedly plotted a mass shooting at a Hindu temple outside Chicago, but a tip from a coworker helped authorities thwart the attack, according to police.

Alexandros Paporakis, of Palatine, was arrested on Sunday after allegedly plotting to open fire at a Hindu temple in Aurora, a suburb of Chicago, Palatine Police said at a news conference on Thursday.

Paporakis faces one felony count of making a terrorist threat and one felony count of unlawful possession of a weapon.

A Cook County judge has ordered Paporakis held without bond and has put a jailhouse healthcare order into place, saying that the teenager receives hormone injections for gender transition and is being treated for ADHD, depression and anxiety, according to NBC Chicago.

Prosecutors allege Paporakis drove to the Hindu temple in Aurora armed with a modified rifle and about 300 rounds of ammunition and equipped with body armor and other tactical gear. Authorities said Paporakis intended to carry out a shooting, but returned home after the rifle malfunctioned.

After making it home, the suspect searched the internet trying to learn how to unjam the gun and allegedly called a colleague informing them of the intent to carry out a mass shooting, according to police.

Paporakis' coworkers at Taco Bell reported to Mount Prospect Police that they had received a suspicious message that day from Paporakis, leading police to obtain a search warrant and detain Paporakis before the suspect could return to the scene to carry out the alleged attack.

Authorities praised those who reported the threat and encouraged others who come across something suspicious to report it to law enforcement.

"I want to praise and offer my personal, sincerest thanks to the individual who stepped forward in many successful disruptions by law enforcement and potential acts of violence or terrorism attacks. It is a single, courageous member of the public who comes forward to prevent attacks," FBI Chicago Field Office acting special agent in charge Lucas Rothaar said at a press conference on Thursday.

Police said they identified a red Acura registered to Paporakis after receiving the tip. Surveillance video showed the suspect in the vehicle entering the parking lot at the Hindu temple at 12:25 p.m. before exiting a few minutes later.

Paporakis was later observed driving to a residence on Rand Road in Palatine shared with the suspect's mother. Police executed a search warrant and found a rifle, a loaded magazine, hundreds of rounds of rifle ammunition and other tactical gear in Paporakis' possession.

Police also found what they described as an eight-page manifesto, which authorities said detailed the alleged attack and Paporakis' white supremacist views.

The writings "expressed words of hate, violence, superior race and mass shooting of Indian people. [Paporakis'] hatred was against Jewish people, African-Americans, Indians, and 'non-white' people," according to police. Paporakis described them as "subhumans" and planned to kill as many of them as possible.

Police said the suspect "expressed pleasure calling himself a sociopathic white supremacist Neo-Nazi filled with hatred, fantasizing about mass murder nearly every day."

The manifesto also referred to Paporakis as the "Aurora Shooter."

A judge ruled that Paporakis will remain in jail, with the next court appearance scheduled for Oct. 30.

The temple said it was aware of the recent security threat and has boosted security.

"Please know that the safety of our devotees, employees and volunteers is our highest priority, and we have implemented additional security measures effective immediately, including increased armed security presence at the Temple and are taking additional steps to ensure an ongoing safe environment for everyone at the Temple," the temple said in a message on its website.

Transgender Substitute Teacher Faces Up to 25 Years for Murder Spree Threat

[BB] A transgender former substitute teacher was convicted of threatening to go on a “murder spree” at a Virginia high school.

Hadyn James Dollery, a 19-year-old male who reportedly identifies as female and goes by the name “Sophie,” was found guilty Friday on four of the five counts he faced in Loudoun County. The jury convicted him on two counts of threatening to injure or kill a person, one count of making threats on school grounds, and one count of threatening to damage a building. He was acquitted on a third threat count.

Prosecutors said the messages went out over Discord at 1:49 a.m. on April 15, the day after Dollery’s boyfriend broke up with him. Senior Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Dircia Schubert told jurors he threatened to kill the ex, the ex’s family and his own, and to carry out a murder spree at the ex’s school. He also described cannibalizing one of the victims after killing them.

The ex and another victim reported the messages through Safe2Talk, a school tip app. Officials at John Champe High School, the target of the threats, and Eagle Ridge Middle School, where Dollery worked as a non-licensed substitute, treated them as credible and added security at both schools.

Charging documents say the sheriff’s office received the report April 16. Dollery was taken into custody four days later, off school property, and dropped from the district’s substitute list.

Jurors also heard about a box cutter in his backpack and phone records showing the device had been used to search Google about blood.

Defense attorney Mary Swanson argued the case was a teenage love triangle blown out of proportion. She told jurors it was Dollery’s first breakup and that he had no history of violence.

The jury of seven men and five women got the case Thursday afternoon and returned the verdict Friday. Sentencing is set for Jan. 28. The four convictions carry up to 25 years, with no minimum.

Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman questioned the division’s hiring practices after the April arrest, saying 18- and 19-year-olds should not be responsible for students and calling it a safety risk. Loudoun County Public Schools allows 19-year-olds to substitute if they hold a high school diploma. Division spokesman Dan Adams answered that the school system employs more than 13,000 people and defended its hiring process.

The county’s schools drew national attention in 2021, when a male student assaulted a female classmate in a Stone Bridge High School bathroom and then assaulted another girl at Broad Run High School after being transferred there. A special grand jury said the district “failed at every juncture” and indicted then-Superintendent Scott Ziegler on three misdemeanor counts.

Teen gunman, 16, kills three children aged 5, 8 and 11 and a teacher in Oregon elementary school after shooting locked doors to get inside
[DM] A teenage gunman killed three children and a teacher when he opened fire at an elementary school in Oregon on Thursday afternoon.

The unidentified shooter, 16, shot at the locked doors of Silver Rail Elementary School in the city of Bend on Thursday afternoon before killing three children, ages five, eight and 11, and one teacher whose age was not disclosed.

He was then gunned down by a good Samaritan whom authorities said followed him into the building.

A seven-year-old and another 54-year-old teacher were also transported to a local hospital with critical injuries.

A motive for the shooting remains unclear, and authorities would not confirm on Thursday night whether the suspect knew anybody at the school or if he had attended it when he was younger.

'Today is an awful day for our community,' Bend Mayor Melanie Kebler declared. 'Our hearts are broken as we mourn this tragedy and the profound impact it has had on so many people, especially the children, families, educators and school staff whose lives have been forever changed.

'A school should be a safe place where children can learn and feel secure,' Kebler continued, as she called for the community to lean on one another.

The tragedy began when a man driving a red Toyota Tacoma pickup truck in the school parking lot spotted the teen carrying a long gun approach the building, according to The Source.

The driver then confronted the teenager, who in turn fired numerous shots at the civilian and his truck, shattering a rear window and leaving six large bullet holes in the vehicle.

At that point, the assailant allegedly threw his gun over the school fence and hopped over - prompting the driver to call Deschutes County dispatchers at around 12.59pm.

Within just one minute, the Bend police department sent out an alert to respond to a critical scene.

But as officers then raced to the school, the suspect forced his way into the building by shooting at locked doors - at which point dispatchers started receiving 'dozens' of 911 calls, Police Chief Mike Krantz said at a news conference Thursday night.

Cops arrived at the scene by 1.02pm and just moments later, the lone shooter was killed by an unidentified community member.

The school was placed under lockdown following the shooting, as police officers went room by room to evacuate the building, Miller said. The school has a student body of between 400 to 450 pupils and a staff of more than 40.

Officers clad in bullet proof vests and carrying assault rifles were also seen in the aftermath peering into the vehicles parked at the school's lot, while parents, teachers and children huddled together, embracing and wiping tears from their faces.

Police had asked the public to avoid the area amid the investigation, but a large crowd of concerned parents were seen gathering outside the school after hearing the reports.

Those worried parents have since rushed to the nearby Journey Church, to be reunited with their loved ones as officials evacuated the youngest children first.

As she waited for her nephew, Mindy Corley, the aunt of a fifth-grader at the school, told NBC News how he was left 'very scared' in the aftermath of the shooting.

She said he has a cellphone and was able to tell his mother he was OK, but 'he was clearly very, very scared and wanted to go home.'

Steven and Angela Nuchols also told how they got their eight-year-old daughter, Charlotte, dressed up for picture day earlier on Thursday.

They then had to race to the school just a few hours later.

'It was crawling with police officers from all over the country,' Angela said. 'You've got guys in tactical gear, rifles. You're just scared to death wondering is your child OK? You don't know.'

The couple was later reunited with their daughter, but Angela said it was 'like the worst three hours of our lives.'

Meanwhile, Federal agents from the FBI's Portland Bureau and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have descended on the scene to aid in the investigation, with FBI Director Kash Patel vowing to 'make every resource [local law enforcement needs] available.'

It has since been determined that the suspect used a pump-action shotgun that was purchased by his mother, a law enforcement source told the Associated Press.

At a press conference on Thursday night, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek praised the community member she said 'heroically intervened' and told how she had visited the school nearly one year ago.

'My heart is absolutely broken today,' she said. 'No parent should have to have this kind of day.'

She then said it was time for the community to grieve.

'There is going to be time for answering all those questions we all have right now and searching for more ways to prevent this from happening in the future,' said Kotek, a Democrat. 'But for now, let's hold each other close in grief and put as much love into the world as possible.'

Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook also called the incident on Thursday 'a senseless tragedy.'

'No community should have to do what we are doing right now,' he said at the news conference, visibly shaken by what had happened. 'I don't have any words for what this community is feeling right now.'
Update from comments at 6:30 p.m. EDT for future searchability: the killer is former special ed. student John J. Griffin, 16, the hero dad who stopped him is carpenter Kaylub Giamanco, 36, who has two daughters in the school and stopped Griffin at the front door before he ran round to gain entry by shooting the lock off the back door.

School shooting

Factors contributing to school shootings include social isolation, bullying, and mental health issues, with many shooters having experienced trauma or rejection. Notably, adolescent males from predominantly White, suburban backgrounds are most often identified as perpetrators. The debate surrounding school shootings frequently splits along political lines, with differing opinions on whether to prioritize gun control measures or enhance mental health support and school security. Various preventative strategies have been proposed, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach involving lawmakers, community members, and educational institutions to address the root causes of this troubling phenomenon and ensure the safety of students.

#10  Oregon elementary school shooter and man who shot him identified

John J. Griffin, 16, has been identified as the gunman in Thursday's deadly school shooting at a Bend, Oregon, elementary school.

Kaylub Giamanco, 36, was identified as the good Samaritan who took down Griffin, his brother, Kyle Giamanco, told NBC News.

Kaylub Giamanco is a carpenter and the father of two girls who attend Silver Rail. According to Kyle Giamanco, his brother was driving home for his lunch break when he heard gunshots. He then spotted the gunman entering the school. Kyle Giamanco also said his brother has a concealed-weapon permit and told him that the shooter had gone into the special education room.

WWII - Battle of Drøbak Sound movie (short jpg)
[Bing - YouTube] SUMMARY
The Battle of Drøbak Sound on April 9, 1940, saw Norwegian coastal defenses sink the German heavy cruiser Blücher, part of an invasion flotilla heading for Oslo. Colonel Birger Eriksen’s Oscarborg Fortress used 28 cm guns to cripple the ship, followed by torpedoes from Commander Andreas Andersen’s battery that delivered the fatal blows. The loss of over 1,000 troops and key personnel delayed Germany’s occupation, enabling Norway’s king and government to escape and continue resistance.

#1  Oscarsborg Fortress was commanded by 64-year-old Oberst (Colonel) Birger Eriksen. He had not received clear orders nor any information on whether the approaching warships were German or Allied. He knew that Norway was officially neutral but that the government was inclined to side with the British if Norway became a belligerent.

Board of inquiry in 1946 found the aging colonel at fault for the surrender of the batteries. The sinking of the German cruiser Blucher prevented a commando raid to capture the King of Norway. Colonel Ericksen bought precious time for the Royal family to escape Oslo.

-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
Blackout warnings as furious 'devil winds' up to 80mph target millions in California
[Daily Mail, where America get its news] Powerful 'devil winds' with the strength of a hurricane are sweeping over more than 20 million people, threatening to cause widespread power outages and spark deadly wildfires.

Commonly known as Santa Ana winds, forecasters warn that gusts could reach 80mph starting Thursday and lasting through the weekend, potentially damaging homes, knocking down power lines and even blowing trucks off roadways.

The winds are sweeping through Southern California, bringing surges of dry, hot air into Los Angeles, Ventura, Orange, San Diego, Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

Santa Ana winds form when high pressure builds up in Northern California, Nevada and Utah, driving dry gusts into the southern half of the state, which get hotter and drier as they drop from the mountains to the Pacific Coast.

Temperatures are expected to skyrocket into the 90s in Los Angeles and San Diego, with AccuWeather warning that the strongest winds will potentially reach 90mph.

The National Weather Service (NWS) is already urging residents throughout the region to brace for possible blackouts through midnight on Saturday.

NWS officials warned in a statement: 'Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.'

Santa Ana winds have also been nicknamed 'devil winds' because they dramatically increase the risk of spreading sparks that ignite deadly wildfires throughout California.

The Santa Ana winds are named after the Santa Ana Canyon in Orange County, California, where the strong, high-pressure air rushes through as it blasts down from the inland deserts toward the coast

The phenomenon was blamed for multiple wildfires in Southern California in 2025 and has already been connected to one blaze this month.

In January 2025, Santa Ana conditions, including winds between 60 and 100mph, very low humidity and local droughts, were connected to the Eaton, Hughes and Palisades Fires.

Those disasters destroyed nearly 50,000 acres across Los Angeles County and reportedly killed at least 30 people.

The power outages have been directly tied to the risk of new wildfires starting over the next three days.

AccuWeather noted in a statement: 'Utilities may temporarily shut off electricity in areas facing dangerous fire weather to reduce the risk of power equipment sparking wildfires.'

At the same time, a mid-October heat wave is set to break out in Southern California, with temperatures jumping into the 90s in downtown Los Angeles, marking the second heat wave of the month in the area.

The devil winds are expected to be slightly less intense within the Los Angeles metro areas, however, nearby communities will be quickly dried out by the hot and arid winds, raising the risk of fires around the city.

NWS warned that if a fire does ignite, conditions will be 'favorable for extreme fire behavior which would threaten life and property.'

China-Japan-Koreas
North Korea Tests Two Types of Submarine-Launched Strategic Cruise Missiles
[KhaamaPress] North Korea
...hereditary Communist monarchy distinguished by its truculence and periodic acts of violence. Distinguishing features include Songun (Army First) policy, which involves feeding the army before anyone but the Dear Leadership, and Juche, which is Kim Jong Il's personal interpretation of Marxism-Leninism, which he told everybody was brilliant. In 1950 the industrialized North invaded agrarian South Korea. Twenty-one countries of the United Nations eventually contributed to the UN force opposing the invasion, with the United States providing around 90% of the military personnel. Seventy years later the economic results are in and it doesn't look good for Juche...
said Thursday it had test-fired two types of submarine-launched strategic cruise missiles off its east coast, describing the tests as part of efforts to strengthen naval capabilities and improve the reliability of its military deterrent.

The launches took place on Wednesday in waters off North Korea’s eastern coast, according to the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). The agency said the tests were intended to assess the readiness of underwater combat systems and improve the navy’s ability to carry out strategic missions. Senior military officials observed the launches, Rooters reported.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said its military had monitored and tracked the launches using multiple surveillance assets, from before launch through the missiles’ cruise and terminal flight phases. A South Korean military spokesperson said one missile was launched from a vertical launch system, while the other was fired through a torpedo tube.

KCNA claimed the tests had no adverse impact on the security of neighbouring countries. However,
by candlelight every wench is handsome...
the North Korean report provided few technical details about the missiles or the tests. South Korean analysts said photographs released by North Korea suggested the launches may have involved the modified diesel-powered submarine Kim Kun Ok Hero, which Pyongyang unveiled in 2023.

The tests highlight North Korea’s continued efforts to develop submarine-based weapons and strengthen its ability to launch strikes from the sea. Such systems could complicate regional defence planning by making missile launches more difficult to detect and respond to.

However,
by candlelight every wench is handsome...
analysts have cautioned that North Korea has yet to demonstrate the full operational capabilities of a modern missile submarine, including sustained submerged operations and long-range patrols. The extent to which the latest tests bring Pyongyang closer to deploying a reliable sea-based nuclear deterrent remains unclear.

The launches also follow a series of recent North Korean weapons tests, including tactical ballistic missile launches earlier this week. Pyongyang has continued to expand its missile programmes amid stalled diplomatic efforts and persistent tensions with South Korea and the United States.

North Korea’s missile and nuclear programmes remain a major security concern for South Korea, Japan and Washington, which have repeatedly criticised the country’s weapons development. Pyongyang, in turn, says its military deterrent is necessary to protect the country against external threats.

Hackers leaked data from a French Masonic lodge online
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited
[Regnum] Hackers have leaked data from the French Masonic organization "Grand Orient de France," including internal and financial documents, as well as personal information, online. This was reported on October 15 by the portal FrenchBreaches.

According to the portal, the LunarisSec group took responsibility for publishing the materials. The analyzed dataset included 737 files, including 727 PDF documents totaling 9,069 pages.

The documents primarily relate to the period from 2017 to 2026. Among them were meeting minutes, budgets, annual financial statements, circulars, activity reports, and materials from individual Masonic lodges.

One document, dated September 2024, contains the names, email addresses, and phone numbers of individuals associated with one of the lodges. Some of the materials included in the collection may have previously been publicly available. FrenchBreaches notes that the presence of files in the published collection does not necessarily mean that all of them were confidential or hacked.

Previously, hackers in France managed to remotely trigger forced defrosting of supermarket refrigerators and set the temperature to 50 degrees Celsius. As a result, tons of food spoiled. In total, approximately 150 Intermarché stores, several Metro stores, a number of independent businesses, including butchers, and some Coopérative U and Leclerc stores were affected.

Nineteen hurt after train and bus crash at the Channel Tunnel [FR] entrance
[DM] At least 19 people have been injured after a freight train and a minibus crashed at the entrance to the Channel Tunnel in France.

The collision unfolded at around 8pm last night near the tunnel entrance in Pas-de-Calais, sparking a major emergency response, with two people being airlifted to hospital.

An investigation has now been launched into what happened, authorities announced, saying that it was 'the first time an incident of this type has occurred' on an Eurotunnel loading platform.

Fifty-five firefighters, 25 teams from the mobile emergency and intensive care service, about 20 border police officers and approximately 100 Eurotunnel staff scrambled to help those caught up in the crash alongside ambulances and a helicopter.

Those hurt were all on the bus, which was carrying HGV drivers towards a Eurotunnel loading platform.

French authorities have since confirmed that 19 men, including the minibus driver, of different nationalities were injured, with five of them reported to be serious but not life-threatening.

The two people with the most serious injuries were airlifted to University Hospital in Lille, where they remained in 'intensive care' by midnight.

The 17 other injured were taken to hospitals in Helfaut, Calais, Boulogne, Montreuil-sur-Mer and Dunkirk, with nine being treated by paramedics at the scene of the incident.

Sources have also now confirmed that the train was stationary at the time of the incident, and the bus had driven into it.

A spokesman for the Pas de Calais prefecture said: 'An initial report indicates 19 people involved, including the driver. No deaths are to be reported at this stage and no lives are in danger.'

According to the sub-prefect of Calais, the drivers were of different nationalities and were all male.

The collision happened on the French side of the Channel Tunnel, which connects Folkestone in Kent with Coquelles, near Calais, in northern France.

Agathe Cury, the subprefect for the Pas-de-Calais region, attended the scene last night.

She told reporters two of the injured were taken to the Hospital Centre University De Lille to get 'appropriate care', while the others were taken to hospitals in Boulogne, Dunkirk, and Rang-Du-Fliers for 'check-ups'.

She said: 'Two trains were on either side of the platform.

'One was being loaded by heavy goods vehicles ahead of a cross-Channel journey, and another train that had previously been loaded was departing.

'For a reason that currently remains unknown, the minibus collided with the departing train.

'The bus did not overturn, it is still upright – but the shock and the collision caused injuries to the people involved.'

She confirmed the minibus was carrying the HGV drivers to their dedicated passenger space inside the LeShuttle train which was still being loaded on the platform.

'There were various nationalities and the relevant consulates have been informed,' she added.

It is currently unclear whether any British nationals are among the injured.

'It is the first time an accident on a loading platform of this type has occurred,' Ms Cury added.

'This is why we immediately deployed the resources necessary to respond to this incident as quickly as possible.'

Ms Cury indicated medical helicopters were deployed to transport the injured, leading to a delay in Eurotunnel traffic for passengers.

'The freight train traffic was not interrupted, the Eurostar traffic was not interrupted.

'The passenger traffic was suspended for an hour and a half while helicopters dealt with the injured.'

A judicial investigation has been launched into the circumstances of the incident, Ms Cury added.

A photograph published by local news outlet La Voix du Nord showed a badly damaged minibus on the platform, with police officers and staff in high-visibility jackets present at the scene.

Injured people who have been pixelated also appear to be receiving treatment on the platform.

Eurostar said the incident is not expected to impact their service.

It said in a status update: 'An incident occurred several kilometres away from the Channel Tunnel.

'This incident does not involve or impact Eurostar trains running from and to London.

'All of Eurostar trains will run as expected.'

A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said: 'We are following reports of a collision on the French side of the Eurotunnel.

'Our thoughts are with all those impacted.

Israeli settlers burn olive trees, injure journalist in West Bank attack
[Reuters] ABU FALAH, West Bank, Oct 16 (Reuters) - Clad in black and their faces masked, dozens of militant Israeli settlers burned olive trees and threw rocks at Palestinians in a coordinated attack on Friday on a West Bank village's annual harvest that injured at least two people including a journalist.
"journolist"
Some 80 settlers, some of them carrying gas ‌canisters, descended from a hill above a terraced olive grove where villagers from Abu Falah had gathered to pick ripe fruit, a cherished annual tradition in Palestinian life, Reuters witnesses said.

The settlers took positions in front of the terraced lanes of olive trees. Some of them used slings to launch rocks towards Palestinian villagers, who descended towards the bottom of the hill before picking up and throwing stones to defend themselves.

"The settlers want to attack us and force us from our homes," said Moutaz Abdelhadi, 42, a farmer who witnessed the attack in Abu Falah.

Partway through the attack, at least two Israeli military jeeps sped through the area, kicking up dust as villagers ran out of their way.

The attack continued after the military's arrival, with Israeli soldiers firing tear gas in the direction of the Palestinians who had dodged the jeeps. The sound of live gunfire could be heard in the area, and a Reuters photographer saw at least one armed settler fire a gun.

The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Palestinian medics said two people were injured and taken to hospitals in the area of Ramallah. One of them was Heidi Levine, a photojournalist with the Washington Post. The newspaper did not immediately respond to a request for ‌comment.

Israeli settler violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank has surged, with at least 170 attacks since September 27, around the start of the annual olive harvest, according to Yesh Din, an Israeli settlements monitoring group.

The settlers have been emboldened by the right-wing government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has overseen a rapid expansion of settlements and smaller outposts across the West Bank.

Netanyahu has criticized the violence but has taken few steps to crack down on incidents that have drawn international condemnation and sanction plans by longtime Israeli allies, including Britain.

The West Bank is home to some 500,000 settlers and at least 3 million Palestinians. UN bodies and most countries deem the settlements illegal under international law regarding military occupations. Israel rejects this, viewing the territory as disputed rather than occupied.

The Abu Falah attack followed a similar attack on Friday morning in the area of Turmus Ayya village, where settlers burned three cars after attacking a group of farmers harvesting olives. The military did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Salah Abu Niswa, who witnessed the attack in Turmus Ayya, said the settlers "snuck up like thieves, they caught someone by himself and began to beat him."

Elon Musk's three-word reaction after unveiling Tesla Roadster flying car that hits 60 mph in under a second
[NYP] Elon Musk couldn’t hide his delight after unveiling his new Tesla supercar “The Roadster” that could fly and hit 60 mph in under a second.

The SpaceX founder, 55, told guests at an event held at a SpaceX site in McGregor, Texas, on Thursday that the next-generation all-electric vehicle “can basically fly like a rocket”, can do “rolls”, and “crazy gymnastics” while it was being showcased.

“Well it worked,” Musk quipped alongside Tesla’s Vice President of Vehicle Engineering Lars Moravy and Tesla’s Chief Designer Franz von Wolzhausen after the demonstration passed without any accident.

US Army urges adoption of Israeli battlefield medicine as IDF cuts casualty deaths by half - report
[Jpost] According to data presented to Fox News, the mortality rate among combat casualties stood at approximately 15% during the Second Lebanon War in 2006.

In its 78-page report, titled "Israeli Defense Force Medical Lessons Learned," the US Army warned that Israel had been forced to make painful adjustments during active combat, but that the American military now has an opportunity to learn from that experience in advance.

"The time to prepare is now," the report stated, emphasizing that clinical and tactical knowledge alone is insufficient.

The authors recommended studying Israel's medical evacuation systems, medical data collection, preventive medicine practices, and ability to continue providing advanced medical treatment under high-intensity combat conditions.

#3  Israeli Defense Force Medical Lessons Learned

Since the morning of October 7th, 2023, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Israel National Police, and other security forces have been involved in a wide spectrum of active combat operations that have spanned the range from Large Scale Combat Operations (LSCO) to internal security and stability. Prior to the war the Israeli medical services had some significant differences to their U.S. counter parts but shared many of the same assumptions and approaches. The attacks on October 7th provided a shock to the system and forced transformation in contact. Since then, the process of transformation has continued. Although there are some differences between the operational environment in which Israel has fought and the future fight envisioned by the U.S. Army, Israel’s wars continue to provide a critical real world battle lab from which there is as much to learn now as when observations of the 1973 War transformed U.S. Army Doctrine. This is as true for military medicine as for other arms.

#4  The Army did a 'big' lesson learned from the 73 October War. Up till then they were basing loss calculation estimates on WW2 numbers. What the 73 war showed was that the lethality of the battlefield had increased logarithmically with contemporary weapon systems. It would spend the rest of the 70s revising its entire doctrine and planning. We sometimes pay attention.

Kurdistan Region cave yields 75,000-year-old Neanderthal remains with spear wound
[Rudaw] Archaeologists have identified a possible fatal spear wound in 75,000-year-old Neanderthal remains discovered at Shanidar Cave in the Kurdistan Region's Soran administration, potentially providing the earliest evidence of lethal violence involving a wooden weapon.

Emma Pomeroy, who led the research, said in a study published Thursday, titled “Evidence for funerary behaviour and lethal trauma in a new Neanderthal individual from Shanidar Cave,” that the findings offer rare insight into prehistoric weapon use.

“The nature of the perimortem penetrating traumatic injury adds to a small corpus of such injuries in the hominin fossil record,” the report stated, adding that “the morphology of this scapula perforation is consistent with injury from a wooden spear, providing valuable (albeit indirect) evidence for the use of wooden implements in the Middle Palaeolithic.”

Abdulwahab Sulaiman Hassan, director of the Soran Directorate of Antiquities and Heritage, told reporters Thursday that the discovery is highly significant for the Kurdistan Region and is expected to boost tourism.
