U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement partnered with more than five other federal, state and local agencies in a weeklong immigration-enforcement operation in Southwest Florida that yielded 500 arrests.
Caught in the sweep, according to a statement from ICE, were: a Haitian charged with murder; a Honduran accused of molesting children; a suspected Mexican cartel member; a Guatemalan who allegedly tried to use a Taser on an officer during his arrest; and others with accusations or convictions of crimes such as battery, DUI, hit-and-run, domestic violence, possession of illegal drugs, driving without a license, resisting arrest and returning multiple times to the United States after deportation.
From Aug. 24 through Aug. 27, ICE agents teamed up with officers from local, state and federal agencies, including the Florida Highway Patrol, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the Florida National Guard, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Florida has more deputizations to assist in federal immigration enforcement than any other state, according to ICE. All 67 county sheriffs and their agencies partner with ICE, along with multiple state law enforcement agencies.
"Florida continues to demonstrate how to turn important policy into meaningful action," Gov. Ron DeSantis said after the operation results were announced.
Florida is the "most proactive and effective state in identifying, apprehending and deporting illegal immigrants who have intentionally avoided lawful immigration processes and committed horrific crimes within the United States," DeSantis said.
"We will not sit idly by and allow Floridians to be victimized. Rather, we are executing on a whole-of-government approach that engages federal, state, and local law enforcement to get the job done and keep Florida safe and free."
Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL) said some of President Donald Trump’s advisers “are compromising his legacy.”
Host Margaret Brennan said, “You have been speaking for months about your concerns regarding President Trump’s immigration policies but in this ad you put out, you’re more direct. You said, ‘the same Hispanics who helped Trump get to the White House in 2024, feel betrayed. His enforcement efforts have gone too far, and half of the 50,000 people detained in July had no criminal record.’ You spoke to the president after this. Did he take any of your advice?”
Salazar said, “It was a very good conversation. He was a gentleman, very courteous, very receptive, and I told him exactly what you just repeated. ‘Sir, you have this moment in history where you can keep the pot of gold that you brought to the GOP in 2024.’ No other president- and, you know, I covered for 35 years Spanish television. ‘No other president was able to convince the Hispanics to vote 55 points for a GOP president. [KhaamaPress] German police have arrested a 37-year-old Afghan man on suspicion of attempting to set fire to a synagogue in the western city of Wuppertal, in what authorities are investigating as a possible politically or ideologically motivated attack. No one was injured and the fire was extinguished within minutes, police said.
The suspect allegedly poured a flammable liquid onto the entrance steps of the Bergische Synagogue in Wuppertal-Barmen at about 2 p.m. local time on Thursday before setting it alight. Members of the synagogue quickly extinguished the flames, limiting damage to the entrance area, according to Wuppertal police.
Police officers arrested the suspect shortly after the incident near the synagogue. Authorities said the man, an Afghan national who was previously known to police, appears to have acted alone based on initial findings. Germany’s State Security (Staatsschutz) division has taken over the investigation.
Investigators have not announced a motive, saying inquiries remain ongoing. Police are also appealing for witnesses who were near the synagogue at the time of the attack to come forward as forensic Sherlocks continue examining the scene.
The Bergische Synagogue has been under round-the-clock police protection because of heightened security concerns surrounding Jewish institutions in Germany. Police increased their presence around the synagogue following the incident, while nearby public buildings were also secured.
The Central Council of Jews in Germany condemned the incident as an arson attack and warned that it reflects a growing normalization of antisemitic violence. Council President Josef Schuster noted that the attack occurred just days before Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, and called on authorities to ensure the safety of Jewish communities during upcoming religious observances.
Jewish community leaders in Wuppertal said the attack revived memories of previous assaults on the synagogue. The same synagogue was targeted in 2014, when three men threw Molotov cocktails at the building. Although no one was injured in that attack, it intensified concerns about the security of Jewish institutions in Germany.
The latest incident comes amid continued concern over antisemitic offenses in Germany, which authorities say have risen in recent years following tensions linked to conflicts in the Middle East. an Afghan national who was arrested in connection with the 2021 bombing at the entrance to Kabul airport, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison by a US court.
The US Department of Justice says Sharifullah was accused and convicted of providing intelligence support, relaying messages and transporting weapons for ISIS-K.
The US Justice Department said in a statement: “ISIS-K leadership tasked Sharifullah with surveilling a road to the Hamid Karzai International Airport to ensure it was clear of Taliban checkpoints. At about 2:00 pm, Sharifullah travelled his assigned route and communicated to ISIS-K leadership that the route was clear.”
According to reports, prosecutors sought to link Sharifullah, who was arrested in Pakistan in 2025 and transferred to the United States, to the attack at Kabul airport. However, the jury was unable to reach an agreement on the extent of his direct role in the bombing.
Ultimately, he was convicted of providing material and intelligence support to ISIS-K.
Aziz Maarij, a political analyst, said: “First, it has ultimately not been established why the explosion occurred. It appears more likely that the United States may have organized the explosion to disperse the crowds and secure its evacuation operation. Pakistan then arrested someone named Sharif. The incident itself first needs to be investigated before we address those responsible for it.”
The ISIS attack at Kabul International Airport on August 26, 2021, killed 13 US service members and nearly 160 Afghan civilians.

[Dawn] Gilgit-Baltistan police said on Sunday they had foiled a terrorist attack on a police checkpost situated between Diamer and Ghizer districts.
The attempted attack took place on Saturday, the GB police spokesperson said in a statement on Sunday. Around nine hard boyz opened fire on a police party at the Sargah Nallah seasonal checkpost, located within the jurisdiction of the Singalcop shoppe, adjacent to Ghizer and Diamer districts.

The Israel Defense Forces said Friday it was ramping up its forces on all fronts ahead of the fast day, with additional companies deployed in the Northern, Southern, and Central commands, and a senior officer on duty in each sector during the holiday.
A senior commander told Channel 13 that the situation in Gaza was "calm" but said the IDF "would not get complacent." The commander said the army did not discount the possibility that it may have to resume major ground operations in the Strip.

About three-quarters of Jewish Israelis fast on Yom Kippur, according to an August poll by the Israel Democracy Institute, including about half of those who identify as secular.
Among those who identify as Orthodox or ultra-Orthodox, overwhelming majorities (more than 97%) observe the full fast from sundown on Sunday to nightfall on Monday, while 90% of those who identify as traditional observe either the full fast or a partial fast.
Among secular Jews in Israel, 28% observe a full fast, and 19% a partial fast.
A majority (57%) of Jewish Israelis attend synagogue services on Yom Kippur — mostly Orthodox services, though 6% of Jewish Israelis pray at Reform or Conservative services.

Tens of thousands attended "selichot" services at the Western Wall in Jerusalem on Saturday night, with the Western Wall Heritage Foundation placing the number at some 150,000. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attended from a perch above the main event.
Driving on the Day of Atonement is considered taboo, and roads are generally empty of cars, save for occasional emergency vehicles. Many secular Israelis also treat the day as a cycling holiday, taking advantage of the car-free roads, including highways.
Yom Kippur is one of the busiest days of the year for emergency calls, with hundreds of extra medics, paramedics, ambulances and volunteers deployed across the country.

A strike on Saturday killed Yahya Hamdouna, identified by the IDF and Shin Bet as a member of Hamas who invaded Israel on October 7.
The military and security agency said a separate strike over the weekend killed Mohammad Rafa’i, a member of Hamas’s Daraj-Tuffah Battalion who invaded Israel on October 7, and Basir al-Barsh, a Nukhba commander.

After a building collapsed last week in Gaza City, killing more than 20 people, some in the Strip alleged that a lack of heavy machinery had hampered efforts to rescue people.

As I recall, only 5,000 or so participated, Penguin, and half were civilian volunteers joining in the fun. The rest were busy with other things at home, including preparation for holding the hostages, both living and dead, and final organization for the IDF invasion that was sure to come.

An Israeli man in his 30s was shot and killed Sunday late morning in a terror shooting at a natural spring near the West Bank settlement of Neve Tzuf, also known as Halamish.
The incident took place hours before the start of the Yom Kippur holiday; it is a traditional practice to immerse in a spring ahead of the Day of Atonement, which begins at sundown.
The shooter opened fire toward the spring from a vehicle, hitting the victim, father of six Netanel Shukrun, who was also inside his car. Neither was driving. According to the Israel Defense Forces’ initial probe, the terrorist then got out of the car and fled on foot, still armed.
Footage posted to social media showed the moment of the attack. In the clip, Israeli bathers at the spring can be seen ducking for cover as sounds of gunshots ring out in the area.
Shukrun was taken at death's door to Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva, where he later departed this vale of tears.
Shortly after the terror attack, the combat tracker for the military’s Binyamin Regional Brigade opened fire on the gunman as he fled, injuring him, according to the IDF.
The terrorist later got back into his car and drove to a hospital near Ramallah.
Some hours later, the army said commandos of the Duvdevan Unit, following information provided by the Shin Bet, had captured the terrorist at the hospital. The terrorist’s vehicle, parked outside the medical center, was also seized, the military said.
Shukrun lived in the settlement of Alei Zahav in the northern West Bank, the Samaria Regional Council said. He went to the natural spring with his eldest son to immerse in the water before Yom Kippur. Shukrun worked as a systems information analyst, while his wife Meirav is a lecturer at Ariel University.
"A man of kindness, humble and a lover of people, was murdered just after he finished immersing [in the spring] with his son ahead of Yom Kippur. These barbarians will never break us — we will build our land even more," said Samaria Regional Council head Yossi Dagan.
Dagan called on the security services to "increase the force of activities within [Paleostinian] villages, go house to house, collect illegal weapons, and dismantle the terror infrastructure."
Israel Ganz, the head of the Binyamin Regional Council, said: "This is a very difficult incident, but we are strong and we will get through it."
"God willing, this [upcoming] Sukkot will be full of tourists," he said, referring to the weeklong festival that starts later this week. "No one is going to run away from here."
"The State of Israel must go from defense to offense and restore deterrence and security for residents. The settlements will never be broken," added Dagan, who also serves as head of the Yesha Council, an umbrella organization for West Bank settlements.
IDF: PALESTINIAN DRIVER TRIED TO RAM TROOPS, SHOT DEAD
Separately, the IDF said a Paleostinian attempted to ram troops with his vehicle at the site of the formerly evacuated settlement of Ganim in the northern West Bank. Soldiers of the Paratroopers Brigade’s 890th Battalion stationed in the area opened fire on the car, killing the driver, according to the IDF.
A second Paleostinian in the car was apprehended by the soldiers.
The army said no soldiers were maimed in the incident.
Responding to the two attacks, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that "no terrorist is immune, nor are those who assisted them."

The premier said he instructed Israeli security forces to send reinforcements to the West Bank, and to impose closures and carry out arrests. Netanyahu also ordered that the home of "the terrorist" be demolished immediately. It was not clear which attacker Netanyahu was referring to, though at the time the statement went out, the perpetrator of the shooting had yet to be caught.

SHOTS FIRED, ALLEGED STONE-THROWING IN EAST JERUSALEM
Police said shots were also fired in East Jerusalem’s Silwan, after "a group of youths that passed through the area" was allegedly pelted with stones and one person "fired shots in the air to get the suspects away."
No one was injured, police said, adding that officers on the scene were carrying out "widespread scans to locate the suspects and other findings."
The statement did not specify the nationality of the youths or the suspects. Footage from the scene, in Silwan’s Wadi Hilweh neighborhood, showed Jewish youths admonishing officers for questioning them instead of going after people off camera who the youths claimed had hurled stones.
[Rudaw] Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence said Sunday that it had dismantled three operational cells linked to opposition groups in three provinces, as assassinations and clashes continue to mount in the country’s Kurdish and Baluchi regions.
In a statement carried by the state broadcaster IRIB News, the ministry reported that an operative from an opposition group had been planning to assassinate a security commander in Piranshahr, West Azerbaijan province. The operative was killed in an ambush during a clash with security forces before he could carry out the alleged attack.
The ministry also said it arrested a man identified as “Amirali_N” in Alborz province, accusing him of working with “the American-Zionist enemy,“ and intending “to commit acts of sabotage under the orders of a handler from a monarchist grouplet linked to the espionage service of the Zionist regime.”
In Kerman province, the ministry said it had arrested two members of another cell who were allegedly plotting to blow up a key infrastructure facility in Bam County and preparing to carry out further armed attacks.
The development comes amid heightened tensions and a series of recent assassinations and clashes in Iran. Islam Kak Darvishi, whom the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Piranshahr described as a veteran member of the force, was killed in the area last week, according to the IRGC-affiliated Tasnim news agency.
[North Press] Israeli forces blew up military sites used by the former Syrian regime near Qalaat Jandal on Mount Hermon, Syrian state TV reported Sunday.
The Israeli army continues daily incursions into areas of southern Syria in Quneitra, Daraa and Damascus countryside.
Local sources in Quneitra told North Press that an Israeli military force entered the Tal Abu Qubays area in the Quneitra countryside on Sunday.
The force comprised seven military vehicles and briefly stationed in the area before withdrawing via the Ain Zivan–Kudna road, the source said. No arrests of local residents were reported.
Israeli military activity has also been reported around Qalaat Jandal and Mount Hermon in recent months.
[North Press] Syria’s Internal Security Forces on Sunday announced the arrest of Zakaria Mohammad Sanoun, who held the rank of air force staff brigadier under al-Assad regime, in what they described as a “highly targeted security operation.”
According to a statement posted on its official channels, the Internal Security Forces said Sanoun served as head of the Operations Branch of the Division 22 from 2012 to 2020. The division oversaw air operations at three military air bases.
On Saturday evening, the Internal Security Forces announced the arrest of former Maj. Gen. Ahmad Mohammad Ismail, a senior military commander in the Republican Guard and the 14th Airborne Division UNDER al-Assad regime.
The statement said Sanoun was “one of the most prominent figures involved in planning and carrying out war crimes and air attacks against civilians during the years of the Syrian revolution,” adding that he directly supervised operations at three major military air bases: Hama Military Airport, Tiyas (T4) Military Airbase and Shayrat Airbase.
The Internal Security Forces said Sanoun had been referred to the relevant authorities to complete investigations ahead of his appearance before the competent court and “receive his just punishment.”
