Abbasi, Sattar among former MNAs evicted from Parliament Lodges
2018-08-12
[DAWN] Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Islamabad police on Saturday launched an operation to free Parliament Lodges from former members of the parliament who were illegally dwelling in the government-owned facility, DawnNewsTV reported.

According to the authorities' list, 119 ex-politicians were illegally occupying the lodges, of which 30 have been evicted.

CDA today managed to free up the lodges allotted to former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, former MQM-P convener Farooq Sattar, former federal minister Sheikh Aftab Ahmed, Qaumi Watan Party Chairman Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao as well as Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai.

Malik Asad Sikandar, Bilal Virk, Raza Hayat Hiraj and Syed Ali Hasan Gilani's governmental residences have also been evicted.

However,
if you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning...
Tallal Chaudhry and Abid Sher Ali ‐ both PML-N politicians who lost their seats in last month's polls ‐ have not yet vacated the lodges that were allotted to them when they were still members of the parliament.

Former Pak interior minister survives suicide bomb attack
2015-05-01
[RFE/RL] A Pakistani policeman was killed and two others injured when a suicide bomber attacked the convoy of a senior politician in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Officials say Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao, the head of the Qaumi Watan Party and formerly Pakistan's interior minister, was the target of the attack. Reports say that Sherpao was not wounded.

The suicide bomber ran towards Sherpao's vehicle as it was traveling through the province's western district of Charsadda. Security officials say the attacker first shot at Sherpao's vehicle, then detonated his explosives when police began to return fire.

Sherpao said later that it was the fourth time he has survived an attempted assassination..

Pakistan court indicts Musharraf over Bugti's killing
2015-01-15
[ARABNEWS] A Pak court on Wednesday indicted Pervez Perv Musharraf
... former dictator of Pakistain, who was less dictatorial and corrupt than any Pak civilian government to date ...
over the 2006 killing of a separatist leader, the latest legal hurdle facing the former military ruler since his return from self-imposed exile two years ago.

The charges by the court in the southwestern city of Quetta are unlikely to cause any immediate problems for the 71-year-old, who has not attended a single hearing in the case since it began in 2013.

He was previously indicted for treason in March last year over his imposition of emergency rule in 2007, but proceedings have stalled since then as the countrys civil authorities and judiciary appear to lack the will to take on the powerful military.

The anti-terrorist court has indicted Musharraf along with former interior minister Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao and former home minister (of) Balochistan

Shah added the court would resume hearings in the case on Feb. 4.

Sherpao fears more cross-border attacks
2012-06-28
[Dawn] Chairman of his own faction of Pakistain People's Party Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao on Tuesday warned that cross border attacks from Afghanistan would frequently occur unless the two neighbouring countries sorted out a joint strategy to tackle militancy.

Addressing a public meeting in Shamozai here, he said it was high time to formulate an effective strategy for regional peace.

"The two countries should sense the sensitivity of the situation and join hands to bring militancy to its logical end once and for all," he said.

The PPP-S chief stressed the need for development of a comprehensive plan for the 2014 NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A collection of multinational and multilingual and multicultural armed forces, all of differing capabilities, working toward a common goal by pulling in different directions...
and US withdrawal from Afghanistan and said Pakistain must seriously and wisely act for chalking out a policy to protect the interest of the country that could also guard the interests of Pakhtuns on both sides of the border.

He condemned the cold-blooded murder of 17 Pak troops by hard boyz in Upper Dir.

He opposed military operation in North Wazoo Agency and such an offensive would have devastating consequences for the entire region.

Referring to the growing power crisis, Mr Sherpao said the government never took the issue seriously otherwise there would have been no power crisis in the country.

"The lingering power crisis shows the government's unconcerned and indifferent attitude towards one of most painful problems that the people of the country have been facing for the last five years," he said.

The PPP-S chief asked the government to announce fresh elections without delay so that people could elect new leadership to take the country out of the current political crisis.

He blamed anti-Pakhtun forces for a well-orchestrated genocide of innocent civilians in the country.

"The anti-Pakhtun elements are hell-bent on pushing innocent civilians to the Stone Age. Hundreds of schools have been destroyed in Malakand Agency and tribal areas, especially of girls," he said.

The PPP-S leader said billions of rupees had been given to the government for reconstruction of flood-hit areas in the province and for compensation to the people affected by militancy and floods, but it couldn't be spent on the people it was intended for.

He said PPP-S would continue raising voice for the rights of Pakhtuns on every platform.

"We had met the longstanding demand of the people of Malakand Agency by implementing Shariah law in the area," he said.

Suicide attack kills hero officer in Peshawar
2010-08-05
Safwat Ghayyur, the most decorated policeman in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, formerly NWFP, aka Terrorism Central, and who fought forces of Evil on the front lines as commandant of the paramilitary Frontier Constabulary (FC), was killed along with two gunnies in a suicide kaboom August 4. A total of four people were killed and nine injured in the attack that destroyed three vehicles.

Superintendent of police (SP) Cantt Peshawar, Shafiullah, was the first to confirm that Ghayyur was among those killed. He, however, said three gunnies and a driver were killed. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistain has took credit, according to Taliban sources.

Eyewitnesses told Central Asia Online that Ghayyur left his office at FC headquarters around 4.30 pm and his car had just halted at a traffic signal in FC Chowk when a boomer hit his vehicle. FC soldiers started firing immediately after the blast, sending bystanders fleeing for their lives. Hundreds of shopkeepers and shoppers ran inside the Deans Trade Centre for safety. FC soldiers shut the gates of their headquarters.

"The death of Safwat Ghayyur is a great tragedy. The Boskonians have struck at a time when the people of the province are already faced with devastating floods," said Bashir Ahmad Bilor, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, formerly NWFP, aka Terrorism Central's senior minister. Terrorists had targeted the officer for a long time, he said.
In fact, the last entry for him in the Rantburg seach engine was a hit list with his name on it.
He broke the network of Boskonians across Beautiful Downtown Peshawar and surrounding tribal areas while heading the Peshawar quiet city police force last year. He was the first officer who headed a civilian force to carry out operations in the tribal areas against the Boskonians.

Apart from heading the FC and the Beautiful Downtown Peshawar quiet city police, Ghayyur served as inspector general of the Gilgit -Baltistan (previously Northern Areas) police. He also served in the intelligence bureau. He was a close relative of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, formerly NWFP, aka Terrorism Central Governor Owais Ahmed Ghani and former federal interior minister Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao.

"We salute the martyrdom of Safwat Ghayyur. He was a brave officer who fought against Boskonians till his death," said Iftikhar. He added that Boskonians have grown frustrated and are targeting leaders like Ghayyur, "but they cannot deter us."

"Our jihad will continue until Boskonians are eliminated. If we are required to sacrifice our own lives, we will take pride in it," said Iftikhar, whose only son was killed in a terrorist attack last month.

Terrorist releases in high-profile cases: PHC orders police to produce stronger evidence
2008-09-09
The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Monday observed that terrorists charged in high profile cases manage to get their release on bail easily due to lack of evidence and weak investigation against them.

A PHC single bench headed by Justice Dost Mohammad Khan directed the provincial police to properly investigate high profile cases and produce strong evidences against terrorists so that they could not be able to get their release on bail from courts.

The PHC judge passed these remarks while hearing two bail petitions of accused in high profile cases.

The intelligence agencies had arrested two accused Mohim Bacha and Ameer Bacha in precincts of Kabal Police Station in Swat district one year back, recovered heavy weapons including rocket launchers, mortar shells, detonators and hand grenades from their houses and handed them over to police.

After investigation, the police stated that the accused had stolen the weapons from three police stations after militants' attacks on the police stations.

The state lawyer, however, failed to present strong proofs against the accused when the court asked him to produce solid evidences.

On this, the court directed the Station House Officer (SHO) Kabal to produce the record and complete investigation report against the accused within a week. The court asked the state lawyer to produce solid proofs against them in the next hearing of the case.

Bail plea dismissed: Another PHC bench headed by Justice Jehanzeb Rahim dismissed a bail petition of an accused charged in possessing explosives.

Muslim Shah, resident of Swat, was charged by Swat Police Station on September 12, 2006 for possessing explosives. The police also charged him under 7 Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) and Section 5 of Explosives Substance Act.

After detailed arguments, the court dismissed the bail petition of the accused.

Election petitions: Meanwhile, PHC Election Tribunals issued notices to two NWFP ministers and five provincial and national assembly members in writ petitions seeking their disqualification.

An election tribunal headed by Justice Raj Mohammad Khan issued notices to PPP-S chief and MNA-elect from NA-8 Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao, MPA-elect from PF-36 Swabi Sarfaraz Khan and NWFP Health Minister Syed Zahir Ali Shah in the writ petitions seeking their disqualification.

A former provincial minister and a losing candidate of ANP from NA-8 Charsadda Bashir Khan Umerzai had filed an election petition against former federal minister Aftab Ahmad Sherpao.

Umerzai had lost the election with a margin of 675 votes to Sherpao. He alleged that Sherpao had won the polls through rigging.

Another election tribunal headed by Justice Hamid Farooq Durrani issued notices to NWFP Minister for Sports and Tourism Syed Aqil Shah and Mufti Syed Janan, elected MPA from Hangu district, in election petitions filed for their disqualification.

PM vows to maintain government writ in Fata
2008-08-16
Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Friday vowed to maintain the writ of the government in the Federally Administrated Tribal Areas (Fata) and sought cooperation from the opposition and tribesmen to bring peace to the area.

"The government intends to eliminate terrorism and extremism that have disturbed peace in our society, and the government could not spare any one who is involved in these heinous crimes," he said while responding to a point of order in the National Assembly.

The point of order was raised by Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao, who pointed out that situation became very grave due to heavy shelling and bombardment in Bajaur, Mohmand agencies and Michni areas, and a huge number of people had been displaced who needed shelter.

The prime minister said the role of the state is to protect life and property of the people, and if the government fails to do so, it has no right to remain in the power. "We are here to protect the life and property of the people ... otherwise I have no right to be the prime minister. The government is actively engaged in bringing peace which is vital for economic progress as bomb attacks result in the flight of capital from the country," he added.

He said the NWFP government entered into agreements with local people to maintain peace but regretted that girl schools, CDs and barber shops were torched and FC people were targeted.

He said when the writ of the government was challenged and the FC and the Army were attacked, then it became imperative for the government to take action. The prime minister said that he had sought briefing from the Army chief on the prevailing situation.

He said the elements bent upon destroying the peace were unpatriotic as there were only a few of such persons and most of them were foreigners, including Chechens and Uzbeks. The PM said development of tribal areas is also a priority of the government as the foreign terrorists, who are one per cent of the total population of these areas, exploit poor people for their nefarious designs while use of power is the last option for the government to tackle the situation. "The excessive use of power erodes the authority of the state," he added.

Referring to the situation arising out from Bajaur and Mohmand agencies, the prime minister said he has sent his adviser on interior to ensure shelter for the displaced persons of these areas. He said the government would also welcome NGOs and philanthropists that want to cooperate with the government in this regard.

He said members of the National Assembly from Fata were taken into confidence before launching action in these agencies against the foreign terrorists who are there to destroy peace and are playing the lives and property of the local people are really patriotic.

He said that He informed the House that security forces have captured a number of terrorists from Rawalpindi. He assured the House that the government will take it into confidence and would welcome proposals of the members to mitigate the situation.

Earlier speaking on a point of order, PPP-S leader Aftab Ahmed Sherpao expressed his concern over the migration of people, escaping air strikes against terrorists, from Bajaur Agency. The former interior minister said that at least 200,000 people have left their homes fearing collateral damage in the action against terrorists. He said the government has so far not provided them any help in the form of shelter, food or medicine and these people have been left on their own. He said the government needs to play a pro-active role in the situation, which was getting very serious.

Sherpao called for an immediate end to the air strikes by gunship helicopters as it was also claiming innocent lives. Commenting on the Fata situation, Engineer Amir Muqam of the Q-League claimed that civilians also lost their lives in ground operation and air strikes. He reckoned the present loss 10 times more than the loss in operations by the previous government. He called for taking him and other members into confidence on the situation.

Chechens, Uzbeks want to destabilise country: PM
2008-08-16
The militants arriving from Chechnya and Uzbekistan want to destabilise Pakistan but the government would establish its writ at every cost, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Friday.

Speaking in the House in response to a point of order raised by former interior minister Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao, the prime minister said the government would not allow two parallel governments in the Tribal Areas, adding that action against the militants was essential.

Gilani said Pakistan was envisioned free of terrorism and extremism by the government, and a political dialogue with all the stakeholders would be initiated for the purpose.

Poverty: He termed poverty as the prime reason for instability in the Tribal Areas. "The terrorists exploit and use the poor people for their objectives," he added. Gilani said the army high command had held a briefing for the members of parliament belonging to the Federally Administrated Tribal Areas (FATA) for consulting them on possible operations against militants in the area.

He assured the House that the federal government would fully co-operate with the provincial administration to resolve the issues of displaced people in Bajaur and other Tribal Areas.

Editorial: Al Qaeda and suicide-bombing
2008-07-23
In an extraordinary TV interview, the third senior-most leader of Al Qaeda in Afghanistan, Mustafa Abu Yazid alias Sheikh Saeed, has said something that should stop Pakistan's numberless and mindless "conspiracy" theorists from spreading the word that 9/11 was done by the Jews. Speaking to a Pakistani TV channel, Sheikh Saeed stated that the 9/11 attack on the US was carried out by 19 men of Al Qaeda and that Pakistan did a dastardly thing by handing over the "courageous" Khalid Sheikh Muhammad, and many others, to America. He also said that suicide-bombing was allowed under Islam and declared those clerics who outlawed it as "lackeys of the government".

Sheikh Saeed, who heads Al Qaeda's operations in Afghanistan, is Egyptian in origin and spent three years in jail along with the second senior-most man of Al Qaeda, Ayman Al Zawahiri. The Pakistani journalist taken from Karachi to visit his stronghold was spotted by a Palestinian "studying" in Karachi but in fact devoted to jihad. The journalist was told that he was taken to the province of Khost in Afghanistan where he met the Al Qaeda operational chief. Curiously enough, the Pakistani reporter did not ask him about the assassination of Ms Benazir Bhutto, a "job" admitted by an Al Qaeda spokesman immediately after the killing.

Sheikh Saeed was aggressive about the validity of suicide-bombing but balked at accepting the attempt at the life of the ex-interior minister, Mr Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao, inside a mosque. He denied that Al Qaeda had tried to kill Mr Sherpao. Again, curiously enough, the reporter did not ask if it was involved in the second attempt that did not take place inside the mosque. Possibly because he doesn't want to incur Al Qaeda's wrath again, Mr Sherpao himself says the culprits behind those attacks were the intelligence agencies of India and the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan.
