Drug trade in south Syria used for Assad gov’t extortion, financial gain
[NPASyria] Located on the southern and southeastern Syrian borders and adjoining the Kingdom of Jordan, Suwayda’s location is the reason behind attempts to control it and turn it into a lawless zone fit for exporting narcotics to neighboring countries in the past years.

Drug smuggling operations topped news recently when the village of al-Shaab, in the far southeast of Suwayda Governorate, was shelled on May 8. News agencies speculated that it was a Jordanian Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
that resulted in the death of Marei Ramthan, one of the men in charge of the narcotic trade and smuggling in the Governorate.

This was followed by a change in public sentiment, which rejected the export of instability — namely, the smuggling of drugs and weapons from the southern border to neighboring countries.

An eyewitness near the border in south Suwayda told North Press that he recently saw Jordanian border guards positioned along the border remove the defensive earthwork, starting from the southern border near the city of ar-Ramtha, in Jordan, all the way to Gharabi region, in the far southeast on the border.

The source believes the reason for the removal of the earthwork is to "pursue smugglers inside Syrian territories, too."
Uh oh. Somebody’s gonna be in trouble!
An informed source told North Press that the list of names of all those who still work in drug dealing in Suwayda "is now in possession of Jordanian border guards."
If it were Mossad, they’d already be waking up dead in their beds, but Jordan is a different story.
DECLINE IN DRUG DEALING
An activist from Suwayda, who preferred to remain anonymous, said that they observed a "visible decline in the drug trade after the death of Marie Ramthan;" he believes it is due to the "fear and regression of the remaining smugglers."

The activist does not think that the focus would shift to internal promotion among the youth and adolescents in Suwayda despite its prevalence, but that the large quantities previously smuggled "cannot be disposed of internally." He said, "We are talking about billions of captagon pills and tons of Hashish."
With that volume flowing through, all those locals inclined to become users would already have succumbed.
EXTORTION CARD
For his part, Hafez Qarqut, a journalist, says that smuggling operations in southern Syria have "declined," but "they are not over...and captagon pills will continue to be used as a form of extortion against neighboring countries."
Extortion? I wonder what the word was in the original Arabic.
He noted that the clear decrease in smuggling operations "came after the Assad regime pledged to control narcotic smuggling operations from Syria to Jordan."

"The [Syrian] regime is behind smuggling operations through gangs and militias linked to the regime and Hezbollah. Hence it will be a gesture of goodwill by the regime," he noted.

"The regime and its allies will continue to blackmail the international community and neighboring countries to stop drug smuggling operations in return for money. In either case it is winning, whether by selling drugs or accepting to stop the trade and smuggling," he added.

Qarqut ruled out there being any "seriousness" from international community actors to eliminate the drug trade."

The international community knows that the "al-Assad regime" takes advantage of the dangerous drug issue that aims to disintegrate societies and the youth," he said.

Drug trade is overwhelming southern Syria, as the price of a kilogram of hashish varies between 50,000-75,000 Syrian Pounds (SYP, equals $7-10), and a captagon pill costs only 500 SYP ($0.068).

The Gulf countries, topped by Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, are the main destination for these narcotics materials, according to data issued by the Jordanian authorities.

Several international reports, headed by the US Department of the Treasury, accused the Syrian government and the Lebanese Hezbollah militia of running large drug trafficking networks in this border area, as well as other Syrian regions.
