activists in Bogra during the nationwide hartal
... a peculiarly Bangla combination of a general strike and a riot, used by both major political groups in lieu of actual governance ...
enforced by Hefajat-e-Islam
...a madrassa-based false nose and mustache of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, formed in 2010 to protest against secular education. In 2011 demonstrated violentyly against women's rights and in 2013 held large rallies demanding capital punishment of Shahbag Square protesters and banning women working outside the home...
.Police arrested two Chhatra Dal leaders — Nandigram upazila’s Jewel Hossain, 26, and Rabiul Islam, 27 — following the incident that took place at the district’s Majgram area on Sunday afternoon.

Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, Nandigram cop shoppe Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kamrul Islam, said: "A case will be filed soon over the attack on law enforcers."

According to police and witnesses, local leaders, activists of Jubo Dal, Swechchashebak Dal, and Chhatra Dal, brought out a procession in support of the hartal in Nandigram at around 4pm on Sunday.

They then gathered in front of the Majgram BNP party office and continued to demonstrate.

A clash erupted when Chhatra League men brought out a procession against the Hefezat hartal and chased those who were supporting it.

Nandigram police, after being informed, rushed to the spot, charged batons and dispersed the two sides, and brought the situation under control.

Nandigram cop shoppe OC Kamrul said: "Leaders and activists of Jubo Dal, Swachchasebak Dal, and Chhatra Dal wanted to continue demonstrating in support of the hartal after the Chhatra League men left the spot.

"They then attacked us when we refused to allow them to bring out a rally."

"Sub-Inspector (SI) Reza and Constable Faruq were maimed in the attack. They were taken to the local health complex for treatment," the police OC added.

Nandigram upazila Jubo Dal Convener Shafiul Alam Sumon, claimed: "Chhatra League leaders and activists attacked us during our rally. The police also did the same.

"We did not attack anyone."

Meanwhile,
...back at the barn, a little lightbulb figuratively appeared over Bossy's head...
upazila Chhatra League President Tuhin Ahmed claimed that it was the Jubo Dal leaders and activists who had attacked them first.

"We did not attack their [Chhatra dal] rally. It is them who attacked us," he added.

The RAB media wing director further added: "Nurul, who is from Bogra, passed his Dakhil examination in 2010, later took admission in Bogra Polytechnic Institute in 2015. He was radicalized by Shahriar."

Arrested IS suspects in Bangladesh claim training in Pakistan
2015-01-20
[DAWN] Bangladeshi police tossed in the clink
Please don't kill me!
four suspected members of Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
in the capital, Dhaka, on Monday, including a regional coordinator for the holy warrior group who told police they had been trained in Pakistain.

Reports of the growing influence of Islamic State, which controls territory in Syria and Iraq, have raised alarm bells across South Asia, though it remains unclear whether holy warriors organising under the Islamic State name in the region are acting on their own or as part of a centralised initiative coming out of the Middle East.

"We arrested them in the city early on Monday, carrying a huge number of leaflets related to militancy for training, a laptop and other materials," Sheikh Nazmul Alam, deputy police commissioner with Dhaka's detective and criminal intelligence division, told news hounds.

The suspected coordinator, whom police identified as Mohammad Sakhawatul Kabir, told police that he and the other three men had received training in Pakistain, Alam said.

The Pak authorities were not immediately available for comment.

Alam said Kabir told police while under interrogation that the cell he ran from Dhaka was planning to collect funds and weapons for attacks on Bangladesh government targets.

"The aim of the attacks was to establish a caliphate state in Bangladesh," Alam said.

Police in Bangladesh, which has been in the throes of a political crisis since controversial elections last January, have arrested eight people for suspected involvement with Islamic State in the past year.

"Of course this is a growing concern, particularly at a time when the country has been experiencing a politically unstable situation," said Sakhawat Hussain, a retired army brigadier and a security analyst in Dhaka.

Bangladesh's leading daily newspaper The Daily Star released a photo of the arrested holy warriors, stating that the group leaders have been put on a five-day remand after being arrested last night.

The report further mentioned that the suspects were identified before the media as Sakhawatul Kabir, regional commander of IS Bangladesh chapter, Nazrul Alam, a financier, Anwar Hossain, a convict of an kabooms case, and Rabiul Islam.

including its Bangladesh coordinator.

The court also denied the bail petition filed by the defence lawyer.

Chhatra League men vandalise MBSTU over Facebook status
2014-02-02
[Dhaka Tribune] Bangladesh Chhatra League
... the student wing of the Bangla Awami League ...
activists of Tangail's Maulana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU) locked the administrative building and all the classrooms yesterday, demanding the removal of a teacher of criminology and police science (CPS) department.

Md Rabiul Islam, security in-charge of the university, said the BCL activists, led by CPS students Suman Fakir, Soton and Zahir, locked the administrative building and the classrooms before vandalising the academic building and setting some classrooms on fire.

Assisted by outsiders, the BCL men then forced out all teachers and staffs from the campus, he added.

The agitated BCL members carried out the violence, reportedly protesting a Facebook post by CPS Assistant Professor Jahirul Islam who allegedly spoke ill about the university.

When contacted, Jahirul said he had repeatedly voiced protests against a group of students and outsiders who dominated and collected extortions from the campus by identifying themselves as BCL men.

"Finally I wrote on my Facebook that 'the dream campus of the MBSTU was in the grasps of devils, thugs and hooligans,'" the teacher added.

Tangail Sadar Model cop shoppe Officer-in-Charge Nazrul Islam said the situation has been contained, while additional police personnel have been deployed on the campus to prevent further violence. No case has been lodged in this connection so far.

Sumon Fakir, Soton and Zahir could not be reached for comments.

Nazmul Huda, president of the BCL's Tangail district unit, said no BCL activists had engaged in the violence, as there was no committee of the Chhatra League on the campus.

The university proctor, Khadimul Islam, said authorities were holding an emergency meeting over the matter.

Pro-VC of the university Prof Dr Muniruzzaman, however, said he was not concerned about the matter.

Earlier on July 2013, BCL activists led by Sumon Fakir allegedly attacked a human chain of MBSTU employees, injuring at least 10 people.

Two more killed in 'shootouts'
2014-01-29
[Bangla Daily Star] Two suspected criminals, including a leader of outlawed Purbo Banglar Communist Party
...the Proletarian Party of East Bengal, a Maoist party that has seen better days. It supported independence in 1971 and has periodic shootouts and fisticuffs with the Bangla Jamaat-e-Islami, but has fallen on hard times, with many of its leaders rubbed out by the RAB or indignant citizenry. It is also subject to factionalism, to the extent that it may have more factions than it has actual members...
(PBCP), were killed in "shootouts" between their cohorts and law enforcers in Khulna and Jessore yesterday.

Including them the number of extrajudicial killings comes to 17 in this month. At least eight were killed while they were in jug of law enforcers. Police versions of the "shootouts" were found more or less similar.

Extrajudicial killings should be stopped immediately, said Sultana Kamal, executive director of Ain o Salish Kendra, a rights body that provides legal aid.

"If they are really accused [of crimes], they should be punished through a proper judicial process," she said, adding such extrajudicial killings should not be allowed in any democratic country.

Meanwhile,

called for an independent investigation into the incidents.

Yesterday, Touhidul Islam Sabuj, 28, the second-in-command of PBCP, was killed in an exchange of shots between his party members and police in Phultala upazila of Khulna, according to police.

Sabuj and his associates were holding a meeting at Chatiantola in the upazila around 3:30am. On a tip-off,
"Hello? Is dis da cops? Lissen, dis is Mahmoud the Weasel..."
a police team led by the officer-in-charge of Phultala Police Station went to raid the area. A "shootout" ensued as they fired at the law enforcers, said the OC, Mohammad Elias Fakir.
"You may [BANG!] fire when ready, [BANG!] Sergeant Shafiq! [BANGETY BANG!]"
After the firing that lasted for nearly an hour, police found Sabuj lying in a pool of blood while his associates managed to flee.
"Cheaply made flip-flops, don't fail me now!"
He was taken to Phultala Upazila Health Complex where he departed this vale of tears nearly eight hours after the incident, the OC added.
"Dr. Quincy to the white courtesy phone! Dr. Quincy!"
However,
death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate...
Monjur Morshed, upazila health and family planning officer, said he had heard from the doctor, who was on duty at the hospital at the time, that Sabuj was brought in dead.
"He's dead, Jim!"
Sabuj was accused in nine murder cases and three others filed under the Arms Act.
He had the death sentence on twelve systems!
Police said they had recovered two firearms, 19 bullets, six handmade bombs and two machetes from the spot.

In Abhaynagar upazila of Jessore, Rabiul Islam, 28, a member of a local gang, Mesbah Bahini, was killed in a "shootout" with the joint force, police sources said.
"It is the joint force! Open fire, men!"
This is the gang that had hacked and then burnt alive Chaitanya Kumar Mondol, 48, the youth and sports secretary of Magura ward Awami League, on Sunday night.

Police tossed in the slammer
You have the right to remain silent...
Rabiul yesterday in connection with a mugging case.
"Stick 'em up!"
Acting on the information extracted from him,
"Ow! O-w-w-w-w! Make him stop! I confess! I killed Jon Benet!"
a team of the joint force conducted a drive at Ziadanga village in the upazila around 2:00am to recover arms, Syed Mostafa Kamal, assistant superintendent of police in Jessore, told The Daily Star.
"Yessir, that's what they done!"
As the law enforcers reached near a bamboo cluster of the village, cohorts of Mesbah-ur-Rahman, leader of the gang, opened fire on them, the ASP said.
"You'll never take me alive, coppers!"
The join force members fired back.
[BANG!] We knew that! [BANG!]
During the "shootout" Rabiul tried to run away
"I'm outta here!"
and got injured in the firing.
"Aaaaiiiieee! I am undone!"
He was rushed
"Is the ambulance here yet?"
"Patience! It's on its way! See the blinky light?"
"Ummm... That's a rickshaw!"

to Abhaynagar Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.
He's dead, Jim!

Rabiul was accused in several cases, including murder and mugging charges.
"Aye, sir. He wuz a bad un!"
Three police personnel also sustained minor injuries during the firing.
"Whoa! Rafiqul! That's gotta hurt!"
"You betcha it does. Loan me your nail clipper!"

A pistol and two bullets were recovered from the scene.

Jamaat, BNP pounce on AL's election rally
2013-12-20
[Bangla Daily Star] Jamaat-Shibir and BNP men allegedly attacked Awami League activists, who gathered for an election campaign, in Lalmonirhat yesterday afternoon injuring 30 people.

The injured -- 10 stabbed and the rest beaten up -- were admitted to Hatibandha and Patgram upazila health complexes. The condition of the stab injured was critical, doctors said.

The attackers also set fire to the stage, which had been erected at the Bawra High School playground in Lalmonirhat for the campaign, and at least 40 cycle of violences of the campaigners.

Local Awami League organised a programme at the high school as part of the campaign for former state minister for primary and mass education Motahar Hossain, who is going to contest the 10th parliamentary election from Lalmonirhat-1 constituency (Hatibandha and Patgram upazila).

Some 150 people, including Awami League supporters, gathered at the venue where Motahar was supposed to deliver a speech at 5:00pm.

But minutes before his arrival, a group of 200 Jamaat-Shibir and BNP men carrying sharp weapons swooped on the crowd at the venue, witnesses said.

Local people ran frantically towards safety. When Awami League men rushed to their cycle of violences they found at least 40 of those burnt, said Bawra union AL president Rabiul Islam Miron.

Tension brewed in the area after the incident.

Bawra union BNP president Shamsul Alam and Jamaat-e-Islami

The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
president Mawlana Zakir Hossain denied the allegation that their party activists or supporters were involved in the attack.

Local sources, however, said they could identify many of the attackers who used to participate in BNP-Jamaat rallies.

Motahar told The Daily Star that he had asked police to deploy more law enforcers in the area and demanded arrest of the attackers immediately.

Additional police and joint forces were deployed on the spot soon after the attack, said Officer-in-Charge of Patgram Police Station Sohrab Hossain.

Police were also trying to arrest the attackers, OC added.

Many Hindu families and Awami League men fled from Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat facing repeated threats by Jamaat-Shibir men.

On Monday, unidentified myrmidons vandalised a temple in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat, known as a den of Jamaat-Shibir activists. On the night of the day, Jamaat-Shibir activists also removed 100 fishplates at two points of Lalmonirhat-Burimari route in Patgram upazila to disrupt rail communications.
