Mercenaries and professional military personnel. Who goes to Ukraine from the West to fight for the Ukrainian Armed Forces |
2024-06-01 |
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited. by Andrey Musalov [REGNUM] The authorities of Poland and the Baltic countries are ready to send their military to the territory of Ukraine if Russia achieves serious success at the front. The German publication Spiegel reported this on May 26, noting that Baltic politicians conveyed this to their German colleagues at the Lennart Meri conference in Tallinn. The very next day, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Alexander Syrsky said that he had spoken with French Defense Minister Sebastian Lecornu, after which he legalized visits to training centers in Ukraine by French instructors - they can “get acquainted with the infrastructure and personnel.” Syrsky said that he welcomes France’s desire to send instructors to Ukraine to train the Armed Forces of Ukraine and hopes that other countries will follow this example. LEGION FOR FOREIGNERS Since the beginning of hostilities in the Donbass, in the spring of 2014, “shooting enthusiasts” began to arrive there from almost all over the world. According to the Italian newspaper Il Giornale, as of mid-July 2014, out of 250 fighters of the Azov volunteer battalion (a terrorist organization whose activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation), 12 were foreigners - citizens of Finland, France, Norway, Great Britain and Italy. The recruitment of volunteers was carried out by a professional mercenary, the Frenchman Gaston Besson, who previously fought for the Karens in Myanmar and for the Croats in the former Yugoslavia. In the same year, the first American instructors appeared in Kyiv. On August 1, 2014, Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby said: “The White House notified Congress that the State and Defense Departments were going to spend $19 million from the Global Security Contingency Fund, created in 2012. These funds will be used to “train and equip four companies and the tactical headquarters of the Ukrainian National Guard.” But if during the so-called ATO the participation of foreigners in hostilities was not advertised, then after the start of the Northern Military District, Ukraine officially allowed everyone to do so. On February 27, 2022, on the initiative of the head of the Kiev regime, Vladimir Zelensky, the Foreign Legion for the Territorial Defense of Ukraine was created. Its staff number was about 20,000 people. The formation included several large units and units created on a national basis. Most of them came from post-Soviet republics. For example, the legion includes five Chechen battalions, the Georgian national legion, two Belarusian regiments - “Pagonya” and “Named by Kastus Kalinovsky”, the “Crimea” battalion, and the Karelian national battalion. But, despite the big names, the number of personnel in the formations usually does not reach the regular level. There is no official data on this matter. The formations “Russian Volunteer Corps” (an extremist organization whose activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation) and the “Legion “Freedom of Russia” (recognized as terrorist, prohibited in Russia) that are part of the Foreign Legion deserve special attention. During attempts to break through into the Bryansk and Belgorod regions, they tried to present the formations as “liberators of Russia.” But if the RDK consists of principled far-right nationalists who fled persecution in Russia, then the “Legion” mainly consists of Russian prisoners of war. However, the number of these units remains insignificant, so the “Russian” militants in them are constantly diluted with Ukrainian military personnel. They bear the brunt of the fighting, while media personalities from the RDK pose for the camera, portraying “Putin’s opponents.” FOR MONEY - YES With foreigners from far abroad the picture is different. They are not united into large formations. In particular, the American journalist Seth Harp was able to discover only one such unit - the Polish Volunteer Corps. As a rule, foreigners arriving in Ukraine from the West travel privately, after which the mercenaries are integrated into the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It is noteworthy that the Ukrainian authorities require the media not to call foreigners fighting for Ukraine “mercenaries.” At the same time, these people fighting for money are not at all like volunteers. During an investigation conducted by the Luxembourg television and radio company RTL, it turned out that mercenaries receive from 500 euros for their service when they are in the rear and up to 3,000 when they are on the front line. It is advisable to come with your own equipment, since the Ukrainian side provides only a meager basic kit. At the beginning of the SVO, most Western mercenaries, after being registered with the Foreign Legion, were sent to the Yavorovsky training ground, where the International Center for Peacekeeping and Security was located near the village of Starichi in the Lviv region. There, new arrivals underwent training and training. On March 13, 2022, the International Center was hit by at least six Russian cruise missiles. From 60 to 180 mercenaries died. In an interview with The New York Times, the head of the department of international technical assistance and international cooperation of the Lviv Regional State Administration, Roman Shepelyak, reported that in the first half of 2022, up to 1,000 militants of the Foreign Legion were stationed at the Yavoriv training ground. After completing training, the mercenaries were sent to various parts of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, where they fought as part of small groups of foreigners. Judging by videos from Telegram channels, they showed particular activity during the defense of the suburbs of Kyiv, in battles in the Kharkov region, Soledar and Krynki. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, in the first half of 2024, up to 13,500 mercenaries arrived in Ukraine to participate in hostilities on the side of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, including more than 8.5 thousand from Western European countries, 1.7 thousand from Asian countries, from North and South America - more than 2.7 thousand, from Africa - over 220 people. Of these, several thousand simply fled from the front line, and about 5,900 mercenaries were destroyed. "MOZART" VERSUS "WAGNER" Judging by Ukrainian sources, the majority of mercenaries are representatives of poor third world countries who come to earn money. We are mainly talking about people from Colombia, Peru, Bulgaria, Brazil, etc. But there are also military professionals - former military special forces of the USA, Great Britain, France, Germany and Sweden. The most striking example is the private military company Mozart Group. It was created in March 2022 by former American special forces officer Andrew Milburn and head of the Atlantic Group Limited fund Andrew Bain. The founders did not hide the fact that they named their brainchild in defiance of “Wagner”. In an interview with the Swiss newspaper Blick, they stated that the group’s main task was “to kill as many Russians as possible.” Initially, the PMC was positioned as a community of American instructors designed to teach the Ukrainian military the basics of tactics and mine explosives. But then the mercenaries from Mozart got involved in the fighting. The result was disastrous: heavy losses and mass desertion. In 2023, the founders quarreled over funding, and lawsuits began. By the end of the year the project was closed. THE STAKES ARE RISING If at the beginning of the Northern Military District they were talking about volunteer mercenaries, then in 2024 several Western countries spoke out about the possibility of officially sending military contingents to Ukraine. The reason is obvious - large supplies of Western weapons to Kyiv were unable to turn the tide of hostilities in favor of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, since there was simply not enough human resources for this. In addition, the use of complex weapons systems by Ukraine is impossible without a large staff of instructors, and possibly crews and crews. Therefore, active military armies of foreign countries are already present in the combat zone. There is one more important point. If Western countries begin to actively discuss the transfer of something to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, it means that it is already on the territory of the country and is being prepared for use. And the information hype only prepares the public for the fait accompli. Obviously, what is happening now is that Western leaders are actively discussing sending their soldiers to the conflict zone. On February 26, 2024, after a meeting with the leaders of the European Union countries, Emmanuel Macron announced that he would allow the transfer of European troops to the territory of Ukraine. This caused a flurry of indignation among a number of European politicians. For example, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Macron takes “too militant a position on the issue of assistance to Ukraine.” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, in an interview with The Economist, also hastened to emphasize that the alliance does not intend to send its forces to help Kiev. On March 7, Macron lowered the intensity of his belligerence and floridly clarified that “not ruling out something does not mean doing it.” However, on March 9, Politico reported that Paris was still gathering a group of countries ready to send their soldiers to Ukraine. The director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) Sergei Naryshkin spoke more specifically about the current situation. According to his data, announced on March 19, the French government is already preparing troops to be deployed to Ukraine. According to the head of the department, the contingent will consist of approximately 2 thousand French military personnel. The overall picture was complemented by Macron’s statement at a joint press conference with Scholz. Demonstrating a diagram of possible missile strikes deep into Russian territory, he, traditionally floridly, said: “We must allow Ukraine to destroy military targets on Russian territory, from where shelling is being carried out, but we should not allow other military or civilian targets on its territory to be hit.” Obviously, we were talking about French missiles, maintained by French personnel already in Ukraine. RUSSIA'S RESPONSE The Russian military is well aware that foreigners have been actively fighting as part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for a long time. This is confirmed both by numerous videos and by English, Spanish, and Polish speech on the radio in all directions of combat operations. Who these people are - mercenaries or regular military personnel of Western armies - is not known for certain. But this is not so important: in any case, they are a legitimate military target. To confirm the seriousness of the Russian side’s intentions to prevent foreign troops from staying in Ukraine, on May 29, 2024, Kinzhal hypersonic missiles were again struck at the Yavorovsky training ground. The day before, foreign military training was resumed there. According to Ukrainian sources, not only the Ukrainian military, but also instructors from NATO countries - Poland, France and the USA - became victims of the Daggers. It is noteworthy that the strike almost coincided with a statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin that the Polish military would never leave the territory of Ukraine if the Polish authorities sent their contingent there. |

Palestinian arrested on suspicion of trying to join ISIS, carry out attack |

[IsraelTimes] Suspect, 22, traveled to Turkey and unnamed states in Africa, hoping to receive training for terrorism A Paleostinian man is set to be charged with attempting to join the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allaharound with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not reallyMoslems.... terror group in hopes of carrying out an attack, the Israel Police and Shin Bet said in a joint statement on Thursday. The suspect, 22, was arrested at his home in Sawahera on May 6. He has been ordered to remain in jug until at least June 2. According to law enforcement, during the interrogation "it emerged that the suspect supports Islamic State [and] recently tried to join the terror group’s ranks." Authorities said the suspect was in contact with Islamic State representatives abroad, traveled to ...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund... and Africa, and hoped to receive training and guidance on carrying out an attack. An indictment is set to be filed in the coming days, the statement said. It was the latest in a number of announcements this year of ISIS-related arrests, most of which have involved young men from neighborhoods in East Jerusalem. In April, security forces said they had foiled a plot by three East Jerusalem men who had sworn allegiance to ISIS and planned to carry out attacks at Jerusalem’s Teddy Stadium and a local police office, two of whom intended to travel abroad to Syria or Iraq for training. Another East Jerusalem resident, also in his 20s, was later arrested on suspicion of being involved in that plot. In January, police announced that they’d arrested two suspects, aged 23 and 21, on suspicion of plans to carry out bombing attacks in Jerusalem, in support of ISIS. Then, later that month, police said they had arrested two more East Jerusalem residents, 19 and 20, who planned to carry out bombing attacks near the Knesset and had purchased chemicals to make explosives. Israel has seen a number of ISIS-connected terror attacks in recent years, prompting a crackdown in 2022 after a pair of attacks that killed six people. Leila Gatagazheva was again released under house arrest |
2024-05-25 |
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited. [KavkazUzel] Despite the fact that the decision to release Leila Gatagazheva, 23, a native of Ingushetia, under house arrest was made in her favor, it is still a violation of the law, since the investigation period has been completed and she could not have been given a preventive measure at all, said lawyer Alaudi Musaev. As the "Caucasian Knot" wrote, in February the investigation excluded the article on aiding terrorist activities from the charges against native Ingushetia Leila Gatagazheva; now she is accused only of participation in an illegal armed group. On April 27, the court decided to transfer her to house arrest, and Gatagazheva returned to Malgobek from the Pyatigorsk detention center, human rights activists reported. |

Zambia: Ex-President Lungu accuses President Hakainde Hichilema of plotting his arrest |
2024-05-24 |
[AFRICANEWS] Former Zambian President Edgar Lungu is accusing President Hakainde Hichilema and the Zambia Police Inspector General of plotting to arrest and detain him without justification. In a Facebook post on Wednesday, May 22, Lungu said the police are preparing to arrest him at night from his home in Lusaka. "...the police are under instructions to arrest me in the dark of the night any day by surprise!" the post read. This follows Lungu's controversial suggestion of a possible government change before the 2026 elections, seen by many as a threat. His statement has been condemned by political opponents and civil society groups. Police Chief Graphael Musamba stated that Lungu will be summoned to explain his "inciting" remarks. Local media report that the police are taking Lungu’s statement seriously and are investigating. Lungu's claims of house arrest and police harassment have raised concerns about democracy and human rights ...not to be confused with individual rights, mind you... in Zambia. Lungu, a vocal critic of President Hakainde Hichilema’s government, alleges persecution. The Patriotic Front, Lungu's party, accuses the government of silencing opponents and calls for the release of Lungu and detained party members. He had retired from politics after losing the presidency to Hakainde Hichilema in 2021. The former leader has been accusing the government of victimizing him and members of his Patriotic Front (PF) party to block his return to politics. [SUDANTRIBUNE] A group affiliated with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) carried out a second day of deadly attacks in the area of Takina, Kamleen locality, Al Jazirah state, killing at least 18 people and injuring many more. Residents of the central Sudan ...a Moslem country located in the Horn of Africa. It is noted for its affinity for rule by ex- or current generals, its holy men, and for the oppression of the native Afro population by its Arab conquerors. South Sudan, populated mostly by the natives, split off from Sudan proper, which left North and South Darfur to be oppressed by the guys with turbans... state regularly report widespread violations including killings, arrests, forced displacement, and looting. Further, the RSF, which has controlled the state since December 2023, has been accused of terrorizing local communities and exploiting communication blackouts to their advantage. Musab Takina, a resident of Takina, recounted the events to Sudan Tribune, stating that the violence began on Monday when RSF forces arrived searching for fuel. Unable to find any, they opened fire on civilians, killing 11. The following day, the RSF returned with reinforcements, using heavy weaponry against residential areas and killing an additional seven people. Musab denies the RSF’s claims that locals were armed with military-grade weapons, stating that any firearms used were personal and for self-defence. As a result of the violence, over 30,000 residents have been forced to flee. In a released audio recording, RSF commander in Al Jazirah state, Abu Aqla Keikel, claimed he was responding to reports of troublemakers but was met with heavy fire. However, there is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened... the RSF has consistently denied responsibility for the violence, blaming unidentified troublemakers, Islamist brigades, and security agencies for committing crimes in their name. |

An Islamist group used child soldiers in Mozambique attacks - HRW |
2024-05-17 |
[AFRICANEWS] An Islamist group operating in Mozambique's northern Cabo Delgado province used boys as young as 13 in attacks on a town last week and residents who were forced to flee the fighting recognized some of the child soldiers as their missing relatives, advocacy group Human Rights Watch said Wednesday. Al-Shabaab ... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda... , which is affiliated to the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allaharound with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not reallyMoslems.... group, has previously been accused by UN agencies of kidnapping children and using them as soldiers in its insurgency in the region, which began in 2017. A surge of attacks by turbans in March left at least 70 children missing, according to local authorities and a group of aid agencies. Witnesses told the rights group that dozens of child soldiers were used in the attacks and were seen carrying AK-style assault rifles and ammunition belts. Two people from the same family said they recognized their 13-year-old nephew among the children. "I saw him with my own eyes," Abu Rachide, a resident of the town, told Human Rights Watch. He said the boy waved at him but marched on. Rachide's sister said the boy, who went missing earlier in the year, appeared to be taking instructions from older fighters. "I kept wondering how he became a fighter like that in just four months," she told HRW. The latest attacks on the town of Macomia began Friday and continued until the next day. Islamist fighters looted shops and warehouses for food and exchanged fire with Mozambican and South African soldiers before retreating, HRW and Mozambican media reports said. At least 10 people, mostly soldiers, were reportedly killed in the latest fighting and about 700 residents fled to nearby forests to escape the attacks, according to the HRW report. Recruiting children under the age of 15 as soldiers is a war crime under international law. In February judges at the International Criminal Court granted reparations of more than 52 million euros ($56 million) to thousands of victims of a convicted commander of a Ugandan rebel group, which included former child soldiers. The attacks in Mozambique came days before the nonprofit Environmental Investigation Agency, which investigates environmental crimes, published a multi-year investigation alleging that millions of tons of timber had been exported illegally from Cabo Delgado to China since 2017 and the profits had been used to finance the insurgency. The EIA said Tuesday that its investigation found that Chinese traders purchase "conflict timber" from turbans in Cabo Delgado "and export it alongside other wood" in violation of Mozambique's log export ban. South Africa deployed soldiers to Cabo Delgado as part of a regional force to stem the insurgency, which began in 2017. In 2020, Islamist fighters beheaded dozens of people, many of them children, as the violence spiraled. After a period of relative inactivity, the turbans launched a new wave of attacks this year. The regional troops announced that they had begun withdrawing from their positions ahead of a July deadline, although soldiers from Rwanda are expected to remain under a separate bilateral deal with Mozambique. Aid agencies say the conflict forced more than a million people to flee their homes since it started in October 2017 and thousands have been killed. The insurgency also threatens a $20 billion natural gas project in Cabo Delgado. |

Top Iraqi commander killed in ‘terrorist’ attack: Defense ministry |
2024-05-15 |
[Rudaw] A top Iraqi army commander and several soldiers were killed in a "terrorist" attack in the Salahaddin province, the Iraqi defense ministry announced on Monday. The Iraqi defense ministry announced in a statement colonel Khalid Naji Wassak and several other soldiers were killed "as a result of their repelling of a terrorist attack within their operational area." Wassak was the commander of the second battalion of the 93rd Infantry Brigade of the Iraqi army that operated in the Salahaddin province, where Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. They fling Allaharound with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not reallyMoslems.... (ISIS) sleeper cells conduct hit-and-run attacks against the Iraqi armed forces. ISIS has yet to claim responsibility for the attack. ISIS seized control of swathes of Iraqi territory during a brazen offensive in 2014 but it was declared territorially defeated in 2017 when its so-called caliphate in the country fell as Iraqi and Kurdish fighters, supported by a US-led international coalition, claimed back lands lost to the jihadists. Despite its territorial defeat, the group has continued to pose a serious security threat to the country through hit-and-run attacks, bombings, and abductions in several provinces, particularly in areas disputed between the Iraqi government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), which stretch across several provinces including Diyala, Salahaddin, and Kirkuk. The Iraqi government has said that ISIS is no longer a public security threat as the group has been confined. Baghdad is now in talks with the United States to wind down the global mission against the terror group in Iraq. In its latest report on the anti-ISIS mission released in February, the Pentagon said the terror group has been contained but not eliminated in Iraq: "In Iraq, due to counterterrorism pressure, the ISIS threat was largely contained, though ISIS continued to exploit security gaps between federal Iraq and the Iraqi Kurdistan Region (IKR), and conducted sporadic attacks, mostly in Shia communities." I somehow managed to miss that last point until now, but I’m still only a very junior analyst-in-training |

Heavy clashes erupt in El Fasher as Sudanese army and RSF battle |
2024-05-01 |
[SUDANTRIBUNE] Heavy fighting ... as opposed to the more usual name-calling or slapsy... broke out in El Fasher, capital of North Darfur, on Tuesday morning when Sudan ...a Moslem country located in the Horn of Africa. It is noted for its affinity for rule by ex- or current generals, its holy men, and for the oppression of the native Afro population by its Arab conquerors. South Sudan, populated mostly by the natives, split off from Sudan proper, which left North and South Darfur to be oppressed by the guys with turbans. The country is currently enjoying a civil war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, which used to be part of the army but then they got another ambitious general and you can guess the rest... ese army warplanes launched ... KABOOM!... s on Rapid Support Forces (RSF) positions within the city. This escalation comes despite international calls for a ceasefire. A joint force comprised of armed movements in Darfur allied with the army claims to be closely monitoring RSF movements around El Fasher, the sole major city in Darfur not currently under the control of the paramilitary forces. The gangs have threatened a decisive defeat for the RSF. The RSF, however, continues to mobilize fighters, including Arab tribal militias, around El Fasher, defying international pressure. In response, the Sudanese army and allied forces have significantly bolstered their defences throughout the city. Witnesses reported a military aircraft belonging to the army bombing mobile and fixed RSF targets in the city’s eastern and northern districts. The RSF retaliated with ground-based missiles in an attempt to intercept the aircraft. The RSF released a video on platform "X" claiming to have repelled 22 Sudanese army attacks on El Fasher since the conflict began. They vowed to defend themselves and confirmed the arrival of reinforcements led by Major General al-Nur al-Qubba. Al-Qubba, leader of the "Peace Shield" faction within the RSF, had been rumoured to be siding with the rival Revolutionary Awakening Council of the tribal leader Musa Hilal. However, denial ain't just a river in Egypt... a recent video shows him on the outskirts of El Fasher, denying those claims and criticizing the council leader’s decision to support the army against the RSF. El Fasher is strategically important, being the only major city in Darfur that hasn’t fallen under RSF control. The RSF tightened its grip on the surrounding states of South, West, Central, and East Darfur last year. JOINT FORCE ACCUSES RSF OF TERRORIZING EL FASHER The Joint Force in Darfur issued a statement condemning the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for their actions in El Fasher. The statement accuses the RSF of spreading fear and terror among the city’s residents. According to the Joint Force’s official website, El Fasher is well-defended and will resist the RSF, which they refer to as a "militia" and its allies. In statement to Sudan Tribune, Ahmed Hussein Mustafa, spokesperson for the Joint Force, accused the RSF of obstructing humanitarian aid by preventing commercial and relief trucks from reaching El Fasher. He called these actions "unfair to civilians." Mustafa elaborated that the RSF has been blocking roads and rerouting trucks carrying vital supplies, including a UNICEF shipment of medicine and food for children originally intended for North and South Darfur. These supplies were diverted to El Daein in East Darfur. He further accused the RSF of destroying villages west of El Fasher, forcing residents, primarily of the Zaghawa ethnicity, to flee towards the city. The surrounding agricultural areas are considered a crucial food source for El Fasher. In mid-April, the RSF, reportedly aided by Arab tribal militias, attacked over 15 villages in the western countryside, displacing residents and escalating tensions in the region. |

Abu Huzeifa , known under the pseudonym Higgo , was a commander in the group known as the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara ...the succulent fruit of the union of splinter factions from Mokhtar Bekmokhtar's al-Mourabitunes and MUJAO. Once the dust had settled and the smell of gunsmoke had dissipated, they became the Islamic State in Mali, then adopted their present clever name. They are headed by Adnan Abu Walid Saharaoui. Huzeifa is suspected of helping lead a 2017 attack on U.S. and Nigerien forces in Tongo Tongo , Niger , that resulted in the deaths of four Americans and four Nigerien soldiers. Following this attack, the American army reduced its operations with its local partners in the Sahel. "The identification and evidence collected confirm the death of Abu Huzeifa known as Higgo, a renowned foreign terrorist ," the Malian army said in a statement late Monday. A photo of Huzeifa broadcast by state television ... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe? shows him in military fatigues, with a long black beard and a machine gun in his hand. Mali has experienced two coups since 2020 during a wave of political instability that has swept West and Central Africa. The country has been battling an increasingly serious insurgency led by jihadist groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group for more than a decade . The killing of the Islamic State group's commander over the weekend "could mean less violence against civilians in the region, but the threat remains high as there are certainly leaders with similar brutality ready to take control and to prove themselves," said Rida Lyammouri of the Policy Center for the New South, a Morocco-based think tank. Colonel Assimi Goita , who took power after the second coup of 2021, has promised to end the insurgency. The ruling junta cut military ties with La Belle France due to growing frustration at the lack of progress after a decade of assistance, and turned to Russian mercenaries from the Wagner Group for support in security matters.
