Bangladesh police say top Islamic extremist shot dead

[DAWN] Bangladesh police on Tuesday said they had killed the chief of Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), an holy warrior group accused of murdering secular activists and inspiring a cafe siege that killed 22 people. Khorshed Alam, described as the "emir" of Bangladesh's deadliest Islamist outfit, was bumped off early on Tuesday morning in the northern town of Shibganj, police front man Sonaton Chokraborty said. "He died before we could bring him to hospital," Chokraborty told AFP of the 38-year-old myrmidon. Police say Alam emerged after JMB's old guard was weakened by the execution of its former commander Sheikh Abdur Rahman, and five other top chiefs, in March 2007. He is accused of criminal masterminding a number of attacks across Moslem-majority Bangladesh, including most recently the murder of atheist writer and publisher Shahzahan Bachchu in the central district of Munshiganj in June. He also spearheaded a daring ambush on a prison van in 2014 that allowed two senior JMB foot soldiers to escape, police said. In recent years, a splinter faction inspired by JMB's earlier leadership ...known cleverly as “New Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB)”... grabbed headlines after five of its young members stormed an upmarket Dhaka cafe in July 2016 and murdered 22 people, including 18 foreigners. Four-year-old shot as rival gangs trade bullets

[Dhaka Tribune] A four-year-old boy has been shot and injured in Comilla city after being caught in the middle of a shoot-out between two rival criminal gangs. The victim named Hridoy, the son of a local rickshaw-van puller, was just an innocent bystander during the shoot-out, which took place less than a month after infighting between political rivals led to an unborn child being shot in her mother's womb in Magura. Hridoy, the son of a rickshaw-puller, suffered gunshot wounds to his arm and abdomen and is currently receiving medical attention, said Dulal Chandra Sutradhar, ward master of the emergency department at Comilla Medical College Hospital. Another person named Hasib has been released by doctors after he was given primary treatment, Dulal added. Dr Kazi Tahmina Farhana, a doctor at the hospital's surgery department, told the Dhaka Tribune that the child was out of danger. A bullet grazed the skin of his abdomen, while an operation would be performed on him on Monday to treat the bullet wound on the left arm, she said. Police and local sources said yesterday's shootout was the result of a long-running feud between small-time Mister Big gangs led by Nazim Hossain and Anwar Hossain respectively. Nazim, who had just been released on bail five days ago, suspected Anwar for being behind his arrest last December. To take Dire Revenge, he and his cohorts attacked Anwar around 6am yesterday in the city's Shubhopur area. As the clash intensified, around 10-12 rounds of bullet were fired. Arsonists burn 14,000 chickens

[Dhaka Tribune] Miscreants have burnt some 14,000 chickens setting fire to a covered van with petrol at Ramchandrapur in Muktagachha of Mymensingh district. The covered van was completely damaged and all the chickens it was carrying were also killed in the fire, police said. The driver of the covered van Abdur Rahman and the locals said a group of 7-8 miscreants with sticks barred the van of Kazi Farm Ltd carrying the chicken felling logs on the road in the area on the way to Madhupur from Gazipur. They poured petrol and set fire to the van in the early hours of Monday. They also attempted to burn the van’s driver and the helper with petrol, but they managed to escape the spot by running away, van helper Khorshed Alam said. The arsonists left the place in motorcycles, before the locals arrive, the driver and helper of the van said. Confirming the incident, Muktagachha OC Kamal Hossain said police were trying to identify and arrest the miscreants who had burnt the van and the chickens.

The gang led by Sohel Ibne Mohiuddin was claimed to have taken away Tk31 lakh from Huangjun Yu, managing director of Yagotex Fabrics in Comilla EPZ area. Late on Wednesday night, the Taiwanese national lodged a case with Kotwali cop shoppe, stating that five to six men led by Sohel entered his rented flat in section 3 of the housing estate area around 1:30pm and held him at gunpoint. They forced him into a car, took him to an unknown location in Suagazi area of Comilla Sadar (south) upazila where they assaulted him and demanded that he give them two billion US dollars. Sohel, son of AHM Mohiuddin of Tomchhom Bridge area and a leader of Chhatra League's Comilla Victoria Government College unit, served in prison a year earlier on charges of embezzling Tk38 lakh from a Dhaka-based businessman named Azad. Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Model cop shoppe Khorshed Alam said the lawsuit was transferred to the Detective Branch of police in compliance with an order of the district police super. DB identifies militant leader behind sleeper cells

[Dhaka Tribune] The Detective Branch of police has claimed that the prime suspect of blogger Ahmed Rajib Haider's murder was also one of the Death Eater leaders who recently directed three JMB sleeper cells to kill two teachers in the capital. Investigators said Ansarullah Bangla Team leader Redwanul Azad Rana, who hailed from Feni's Daganbhuiyan upazila and was a charge sheet enlisted accused in blogger Rajib's murder case, was one of the "big shots" who criminal masterminded the plan on attacking the Monipur High School teachers. "Rana, who instructed to kill blogger Rajib and attack blogger Asif Mohiuddin, also made the plan to attack two teachers of Monipur School", Monirul Islam, joint commissioner of DB police, told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday. He added that two other killings were criminal masterminded by Rana, who was inspired to become a Death Eater after listening to Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) chief Mufti Jasimuddin Rahmani's instructions during his stay in the capital's Mohammadpur area. The information was extracted from Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh The JMB is said to be the youth front of Al Mujahideen, the parent organization that began working toward establishing Bangladesh as an Islamic state in the mid 1990s which remains obscure even today. Other organizations, such as Jama'atul Jihad, JMB, Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB), Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HUJI), Hizbut Tawhid, Tawhidi Janata, Islami Jubo Shangha, Islami Shangha, Al Falah A'am Unnayan Shanstha and Shahadat-e al Hiqma are believed to be part of the Al Mujahideen network. The JMB at its peak was reported to contain at least 100,000 members, and an alleged 2,000-man suicide brigade, few of whom actually exploded. JMB allegedly received financial assistance from individual donors in Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Libya. Reports have claimed that funding of JMB by international NGOs like Kuwait based Society of the Revival of Islamic Heritage (RIHS) and Doulatul Kuwait, Saudi Arabia based Al Haramaine Islamic Institute and Rabita Al Alam Al Islami, Qatar Charitable Society and UAE-based Al Fuzaira and Khairul Ansar Al Khairia. [Dhaka Tribune] A Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal ...student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)... leader who was accused in a case filed over the attack on the convoy of Asaduzzaman Noor was found dead in Syedpur upazila of Nilphamari yesterday morning. Victim Atiqur Rahman Atiq, 30, was the general secretary of Chhatra Dal Tupamari union unit. The body bore a deep injury on the back side of the left ear, our correspondent reported. He is the second person accused in the case to have been found dead. On Sunday local BNP leader Golam Rabbani, the prime accused in the motorcade attack case, was found dead in Nilphamari. Five people including four local Awami League men were killed when activists of Jamaat-e-Islami ...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. Chowdhury is one of the five victims killed during the motorcade attack on the day. A case has been filed with the police in this regard. Noor's motorcade came under attack while he was returning to Nilphamari town from visiting Laxmichap, Shishatoli and Palash Bari villages where Jamaat men two days back had torched some 80 shops and residences belonging to Hindus and Awami League activists.

Four 'robbers' beaten to death

[Bangla Daily Star] Angry villagers yesterday beat four alleged robbers to death at different places of Hatiya upazila in Noakhali. Locals caught the robbers while they were trying to flee from their hideouts as police have launched a special drive against criminals in the coastal area. The dead are Ashraf, 35, chief of the infamous "Ashraf Bahini", his accomplice Kefayet Ullah, and two others, Osman and Sarwar, police said. On Friday, two alleged robbers were lynched in the upazila. One was beaten to death while the other was killed in a "shootout" with police. On information, locals besieged the house around 4:00am, said Anisur, quoting villagers. Sensing trouble, Ashraf tried to flee the scene, but locals caught him after a good chase, the police officer said. They then gave Ashraf a good beating, killing him on the spot, he added. Ashraf was accused in at least 10 cases, including abduction, robbery and extortion, filed with different cop shoppes, said Khorshed Alam, officer-in-charge of Hatiya Police Station. Kefayet Ullah, an accomplice of Ashraf, was killed in a mass beating in Kadira Sluice Gate area around 12:00 noon. Two other alleged robbers -- Osman and Sarwar -- were lynched in Mohammadpur area around 2:30pm. Police recovered the bodies and sent them to Noakhali Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsies. Anisur said the drive against the robbers would continue until the area is free of criminals. In 2003, more than 60 alleged robbers were reportedly killed in a similar pattern at Subarnachar upazila in the district.

Qataris to invest $500m in Turkish 'dry' hotels

A hospitality company based in Qatar is set to invest at least $500 million in Turkish hotels operating under Islamic customs, with no alcohol or smoking allowed. Semi state-owned Retaj Marketing and Project Management is looking to build multiple hotels to attract hidebound conservative Muslim holidaymakers in Turkey. Spokesman Ahmed Khorshed said demand for 'dry' hotels in Qatar was booming. He said, "In the beginning it was very hard to predict if there would be demand for creating such a hotel in Doha. But we have found that the demand for 'Islamic' hotels is more than at regular hotels. For example the year-to-date occupancy in Doha hotels is 63 percent, whereas the occupancy at our hotels is 87 percent." The company has just signed a deal to take over a five-star hotel in front of the Islamic Museum in Doha. Plans are in the works to expand the brand across the region, beginning with the UAE and Kuwait in 2012. "Our plan for the next five years is to reach 20 hotels in the Middle East. We want to open in Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the UAE -- Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah; as well as Egypt, Malaysia, Turkey and Indonesia -- any country that can accept the Islamic way of running a hotel."

He got even by referring to the " 'so called' encounter", instead of playing it straight, though. Rab members later recovered a foreign made revolver, four local guns, three rounds of bullet and sharp weapons from the spot. Funny how the bad guys manage to leave their weapons at the scene. Very sloppy. That's ok. The new trainee gets to polish them up and put them back in their velvet lined cases in the evidence room. A case was lodged in this connection.

Jamaat men clash with cops: 15 hurt

[Bangla Daily Star] A clash between police and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir left at least 15 including four policemen injured when police halted their attempt to bring out a procession at Andarkillah in Chittagong yesterday. Police arrested 11 suspected Jamaat-Shibir activists after they took shelter inside nearby buildings and a mosque. Eyewitnesses said the Jamaat activists brandishing sticks came out on to the streets and started pelting brickbats at police at the busy intersection creating panic among pedestrians and commuters. More than 200 activists tried to bring out a procession from Andarkillah Shahi Jame Mosque immediately after Asar prayers around 5:15pm, police said. When on-duty policemen at the mosque gate tried to prevent the Jamaat-Shibir men from bringing out the procession a scuffle broke out resulting in a clash with the law enforcers, said witnesses. Eyewitnesses said the Jamaat activists brandishing sticks came out on to the streets and started pelting brickbats at police at the busy intersection creating panic among pedestrians and commuters. They damaged four vehicles and broke furniture of two bookshops on the ground floor of Shahi Jame Mosque Market. Helal Uddin, assistant commissioner of Chittagong Police Station, rushed to the spot and resorted to truncheon charging to disperse the activists. The Jamaat-Shibir men retreated towards Terri Bazar area and Najir Ahmad Chowdhury Road from where they kept on pelting brickbats at police. Md Mohiuddin, officer-in-charge of the police station, said the agitators pelted stones, potted plants, hand-made bombs and even fired bullets. The law enforcers lobbed at least 15 teargas shells and 30 rubber bullets in return. At least four policemen and 15 others were injured during this battle. Injured policemen Kader, Rafik, Mainuddin and Khorshed were rushed to the police hospital at Dampara Police Lines.

Task force to grill two JMB operatives

Two operatives of the banned Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh, arrested along with 28 homemade grenades in Chittagong last week, will be sent to Dhaka today for interrogation, police officials said. They're not going to feel so good ... The two militants, Masum and Khorshed, were arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion on December 30 at their hideout at Teribazar in the port city. Trapped like rats at their secret lair ... They were remanded in the custody of Kotwali police for questioning on a court order. That is going to be so-o-o-o-o not fun ... A senior police official said that they were looking for six other JMB militants active in Chittagong following some leads after interrogation of the two. Which they provided through broken teeth and jaws ... 'The JMB activists are regrouping here and may be plotting to strike again', he said. He also said that the police had raided Halishahar residential area on Friday night to hunt down an activist of the JMB, but he managed to run away flee. 'A private university in the city and two madrassahs at Hathazari and Patiya are also under surveillance', he said adding that special measures had been taken here to thwart any attempts at subversion.

A special team of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) recovered 28 improvised grenades in the port city last evening and held two operatives of JMB who tried to kill BNP chief Khaleda Zia in Comilla on December 23. The arrestees of the banned Islamist outfit Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) are Masum Bin Abdul Hye alias Abu Saleh, 30, and Khorshed>Khorshed, 40. "I'm still a young man! Masum claimed to be a member of the JMB killing squad that attempted to kill former prime minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at a four-party rally in Chandina, Comilla, on December 23. "They made me do it, though! I din't really wanna!" According to sources, the Rab team around 6:00pm raided a multi-story market at Terry Bazar—a wholesale cloth market in a densely populated area near Anderkilla—and recovered the grenades in two rooms on the third floor of Jahan Bhaban. The members of the elite force also recovered a good number of books and cassettes of the militant organisation. "Great Success Stories of the JMB" wasn't among them. On December 23, Rab recovered three improvised hand grenades from Nabiabad village in Devidwar upazila of Comilla, around an hour after BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia addressed an election rally four km away in Chandina upazila headquarters. Rab arrested two operatives of JMB, and seized a 10kg bomb from a JMB den at Nabiabad village. That your 10kg bomb, JMB guys? It says "JMB" on it. Damn. Looks like they got us cold.
