Former JUI-F leader held in Khyber operation
2009-01-08
The Khyber Agency political administration arrested a former Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Landikotal chief here on Wednesday, as a military operation continued in the region to clear the supply route for NATO forces in Afghanistan.
The once and future amir...
The arrested former JUI-F official Gul Rehman told Daily Times from the lockups in Landikotal that he had come to meet the tribesmen who were detained during the military operation when he was arrested, "without any charge or warrants". The JUI-F had recently expelled Rehman from the party.

Arrests: The political administration has also issued warrants for the arrest of JUI-F Khyber Agency chief Mufti Ijaz Shinwari, and for some tribesmen and Taliban leaders and asked them to surrender before the administration.

So far around two dozen tribal elders have been apprehended in the operation. They include a six-member jirga that had given a surety bond worth Rs 7 million, saying that two local Taliban leaders -- Hazrat Nabi and Hazrat Ali -- would appear before the administration whenever summoned and would not indulge in any criminal activity. The six jirga members were arrested two days ago when the two Taliban refused to obey summons to appear before the authorities. Detained tribesmen told journalists they had been imprisoned without being charged with any wrongdoing. They said they had not done anything illegal and had been arrested for protesting against load shedding and excesses by the political administration.

Landikotal Assistant Political Agent Azam Khan had recently told Daily Times that the Khyber political agent was fully aware of the military operation and that anyone could be detained or released on his orders.

Dozen arrested in mosque raid in Landi Kotal
2008-09-13
More than a dozen people, including underage boys, were arrested from Quba mosque during a raid on Friday.
I have a mental image of underage boys squealing and attempting to get into their garments as they're herded into the paddy wagon. I'm trying to sternly suppress it, but it keeps coming back.
According to Assistant Political Agent (APA) Muhammad Tuhab Khan, Hazrat Nabi, a local patron of the Taliban, violated an undertaking he had made with the political administration a few days ago. The APA said the Khasadar Force, led
According to the undertaking, Nabi was bound to keep away from the mosque, and not to lead prayers or deliver speeches. Sources alleged Nabi aggressively criticised the political administration during the Friday sermon.
by Landi Kotal Tehsildar Javid Ullah Mehsud, and the Frontier Constabulary had jointly initiated the action against the local Taliban. According to the undertaking, Nabi was bound to keep away from the mosque, and not to lead prayers or deliver speeches. Sources alleged Nabi aggressively criticised the political administration during the Friday sermon.
You mean he broke his solemn word? Tusk tusk. No doubt he'll be dragged back to court and given a stern lecture before being sent home.
Sources said Nabi had criticised the administration for sealing the mosque located near the railway station in Landi Kotal Bazaar. The APA said Nabi would not be allowed to further violate the undertaking or to disturb peace. Sources said officials were considering releasing the underage boys.
"Into the judges chambers, laddy! After the judge has been in your chamber you can go home!"
They said after the undertaking, Nabi had disappeared and had not lead prayers or given sermons over the last few weeks. He then arrived unexpectedly at the mosque to deliver the Friday sermon.
"I'm here to deliver the Friday sermon!"
"The judge said you wuz supposed to stay away from here!"
"Mahmoud! Hit him!"
[Thump!]
"Ow!"

Sources said following the sermon, Khasadar and FC personnel took up positions in the surrounding mountains and blocked the main road at Charwazga, surrounding the Quba mosque. They said the Khasadars at Parangsam checkpost had also blocked the road to avoid clashes, or resistance from the Taliban. Officials, however, said that Nabi managed to escape from the mosque.
Ran away to sermonize another day, did he?
