Projectiles described by Lebanese Hezbollah as kamikaze drones were launched into northern Israel on Wednesday, wounding at least seven people including one who was at death's door, medics said.

on Wednesday and was maimed in an exchange of fire with troops, the Lebanese army said.

The army said the attacker, a Syrian national, was detained and taken to hospital for treatment and soldiers were searching through the area for other button men.

The US Embassy said small arms fire was reported near its entrance in the morning.

The facility and staff were safe, it added.

US Ambassador Lisa Johnson is currently traveling outside Lebanon, according to diplomatic sources.

A Lebanese security source told Rooters that Lebanese troops maimed the gunman in the stomach.

The security source also said a member of the embassy’s security team was lightly maimed.

An embassy spokesperson did not respond to a Rooters question on any injuries among the embassy guards.

Rooters verified pictures of the suspected attacker circulating online and geolocated them to near the embassy.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

A Rooters cameraman saw Lebanese security forces setting up checkpoints around the embassy as a US-made helicopter provided to the Lebanese army circled above.

Lebanon’s caretaker prime minister Najib Mikati said he was following up on the incident with the defense minister and security forces.

Iraqi court tells Christian woman to convert to Islam
2024-06-03
Alinsky said make them live up to their own ideals. Not that this was an ideal so much as a lie to placate the oppressed.
[Rudaw] A Christian woman whose mother converted to Islam when she was 15 was told by Iraqi authorities that she and her children should also convert.

Iraq’s Personal Status Law, passed in 1959, stipulates that if a parent converts to Islam, their children who are under 18 should also adopt the new faith.

Evlin Joseph, a Christian woman who lives in Duhok, said she was not aware of the regulation until recently.

"I am Christian. I am married to a Christian man. I have three Christian kids. My education was in our language. All my official documents are Christian. Our marriage is registered by the Church," she said.

Joseph’s parents divorced when she was 15. Her mother later married a Moslem man and converted to Islam.

"When I wanted to obtain my national ID card. They told me that my mother is Moslem and therefore I have to go to court," she said.

Sami Patros, Joseph’s husband, said the regulation affects their entire family.

At the national ID card office, "they said your mother-in-law had converted to Islam and therefore they said your wife should become Moslem, too. This also applies to my children, their religion should be changed from Christianity to Islam," he said.

Akram Mikhail, a lawyer who has represented many Christian cases in the courts, said he has seen many cases similar to Joseph’s and he believes the law contradicts the tenets of Islam.

"This forces someone to convert to Islam, with force. I am not an expert in Islam, but it is in Islam that one cannot force the religion onto others," he said.

The law also stipulates that if one spouse converts to Islam, then Sharia law is applicable. This means that Joseph does not have the right to marry a Christian man. The law also is applied to inheritance and custody.

Last week, the Catholic University in Erbil held a conference on the Personal Status Law. Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani attended and offered his support to the rights of the Christians in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

Christians from across the wider Middle East region also attended.

Khaldun Saelayte, who came from Jordan, said Christians in Iraq are not given their full religious rights and he called on the authorities to enact a personal status law for Chistians.

The conference concluded with several recommendations, including calling on Christian leaders to draft reforms to the Personal Status Law.

’s Iran-backed Hezbollah terror group on Saturday, Lebanese media and a war monitor said.

The Beirut-based al-Mayadeen TV didn’t say if there were casualties, but the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor said two Hezbollah members were killed and several others maimed in the dronezap.

"An Israeli drone fired two missiles at a Hezbollah car and truck near the town of Qusayr in Homs province, as they were on their way to al-Dabaa military airport, killing at least two Hezbollah fighters and wounding others," said the Observatory.

It was the third strike against Hezbollah targets in Syria in about a week.

On Monday, Israeli strikes in the Qusayr area, which is close to the Lebanese border, killed eight pro-Iranian fighters, said the Observatory, a Britannia-based monitor with a network of sources in Syria. At least one Hezbollah fighter was among those killed, a source from Hezbollah told AFP at the time.

Another strike, on May 18, targeted "a Hezbollah commander and his lover companion," the Observatory said. It did not report any casualties.

Separately on Saturday, a bomb attached to a car went kaboom! early Saturday in the western part of the Syrian capital that is home to several diplomatic missions, killing one person and causing material damage, state media reported.

Security incidents, including blasts targeting military and civilian vehicles, occur intermittently in the capital of war-ravaged Syria.

Quoting a police official, SANA said "one person was killed when an bomb went kaboom! in their car in the Mazzeh district."

The neighborhood houses the Iranian consulate, destroyed last month in a strike blamed on Israel. The attack at the time killed seven people including two Iranian generals and a member of Hezbollah, and triggered a direct Iranian military assault on Israel for the first time, sparking fears of a regionwide war.

Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said the man killed in the earth-shattering kaboom was a Mazzeh resident who carried a card identifying him as a Syrian army officer. Abdurrahman said the dead man had close ties to the Iranians.

Last month, an bomb went off in a car in Mazzeh, an upscale neighborhood of Damascus, without causing any casualties, SANA reported at the time.

Tehran has been sending advisers to Syria since the country’s conflict, which later turned into civil war, began in March 2011 and has killed half a million people. Iran-backed fighters have helped tip the balance of power in favor of Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

There was no comment from the IDF on either incident.

Since October 8, Hezbollah-led forces have attacked Israeli communities and military posts along the border on a near-daily basis, with the group saying it is doing so to support Gaza amid the war there.

So far, the skirmishes on the border have resulted in 10 civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of 14 IDF soldiers and reservists.

There have also been several attacks from Syria, without any injuries.

Hezbollah has named 313 members who have been killed by Israel during the ongoing skirmishes, mostly in Lebanon, but some also in Syria. In Lebanon, another 61 operatives from other terror groups, a Lebanese soldier, and dozens of civilians have been killed.

Bassil criticizes Hezbollah as ties hang by 'fine thread'
2024-05-25
[NAHARNET] Free Patriotic Movement
Despite its name a Christian party allied with Hizbullah, neither free nor particularly patriotic...
chief Jebran Bassil has criticized anew old FPM ally Hezbollah for opening a war on the southern border with Israel.

Bassil told Kuwaiti newspaper al-Rai that Leb

has enough problems, from a refugee crisis to an economic collapse and a presidential void.

"I don't see that these festivities have done any good to Lebanon," Bassil said. "If others accept this war as a fait accompli, we will not accept it."

Bassil wondered if this costly war would return the Israeli occupied Shebaa Farms to Lebanon, the Paleostinian refugees to their land, or the Syrian refugees to Syria. "If it did or if it secured oil investments, I wouldn't have any problem."

"The problem is that Lebanon alone, of course in addition to Paleostine, is bearing this hefty cost, with no benefits in return," he added.

Bassil blamed Hezbollah for opening fire without consulting with other Lebanese forces, and called for keeping Lebanon away from the region's problems, but said that he would nevertheless live with Hezbollah and share with the group the same land, tragedies and achievements. "I do not want Hezbollah to lose this war," he said.

The FPM chief also criticized Hezbollah and Amal for trying to impose a candidate on Christians who does not represent them. "We support holding consultations, and we are in fact in constant communication with all parties, sometimes away from the spotlight and other times publicly," he said. "We are in consultation with everyone."

Bassil said that the FPM-Hezbollah understanding is hanging by "a fine thread". "It doesn't mean it is fragile but the points of agreements are that little," he explained. "When it comes to protecting Lebanon, the relation with Hezbollah is very strong," he said.

On a separate note, Bassil said he does not support opening the seas for migrant boats to reach Europe, an idea floated by Hezbollah chief Sayyed His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah

The Iran-backed group has launched thousands of rockets, mortar rounds, anti-tank missiles and attack drones at northern Israel.

, mostly holy warriors but also including at least 82 civilians, according to an AFP tally.

- ASSESSING THE DAMAGE -
The barrages have dealt a heavy blow to Israeli towns and villages near the border which have been evacuated for more than six months. They have also served as a warning of the far greater destruction that would be wrought by a full-blown war.

The Israeli defense ministry body responsible for rebuilding northern communities said it had received 930 reports of damage -- around a third of them categorized as moderate to critical -- the vast majority of it inflicted on residential buildings.

Hundreds more cases remain unassessed in towns like Arab al-Aramsheh, Menara and Metula because it is considered too hazardous for inspectors to enter.

The report did not cite an estimated cost, but a senior defense official who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity said reconstruction in the hardest hit locations could take months to a year.

In Kibbutz Menara, around 30 percent of buildings have suffered substantial damage, the official said.

At least 26 percent of the reported damage was caused by Israeli troops who have entrenched themselves in evacuated towns and villages along the 120-kilometer (75-mile) border, according to the Northern Horizon Directorate report.

The Israeli military said it "regrets any damage to the residents' property" and is working to minimize damage as much as possible.

French police arrest protesters who allegedly assaulted security at Jewish event
2024-05-22
[IsraelTimes] No one is hurt in incident at aliyah fair in Lyon, which saw a similar disruption in December

Police in Lyon, La Belle France arrested several people who assaulted security personnel guarding an event organized by the Jewish Agency for Israel, the organization said.

The incident Tuesday evening ended without serious injury, the La Belle France office of the Jewish Agency wrote in a statement.

The altercation followed a pro-Paleostinian demonstration that took place earlier Tuesday near the Perrache train and bus station in the second district at the center of the eastern city.

Several hours after that demonstration ended, the Jewish Agency for Israel held an aliyah fair — an event to encourage immigration by Jews to Israel — at a venue in the same district.

About 90 minutes into that event, several pro-Paleostinian activists arrived and began assaulting the security guards, leading police to intervene, the French-language statement said.

"At no point did the assailants enter the venue and none of the participants was in any danger," the statement said. No protesters were present on the street when the fair ended and participants left the venue "in total safety," the statement said.

More than 3,000 people have attended a series of aliyah fairs in Gay Paree, Marseille and Lyon this week, Sofer said. The Jewish Agency expects some 3,200 new immigrants colonists, or olim, to move to Israel this year, more than three times last year’s tally, Jewish Agency representative Shay Felver said Monday at a Knesset committee discussion about aliyah.

Ariel Kandel, the head of the Qualita nonprofit for encouraging aliyah from La Belle France, told The Times of Israel that a similar incident happened in Lyon during an aliyah fair in December. "Unfortunately, this is the current reality in La Belle France," he said.

In 2023, La Belle France registered the highest increase in recorded antisemitic incidents of any country with reliable statistics, according to a report published earlier this month by Tel Aviv University and the Anti-Defamation League. The report showed a near-quadrupling of incidents in La Belle France, from 436 in 2022 to 1,676 last year.

On May 17, a synagogue was torched in Rouen, La Belle France, in what police suspect was an antisemitic hate crime.

The 2023 tally showed that 74 percent of the incidents happened after October 7, when invading Hamas
