Police Lines mosque in recent months.

Just half an hour after sunset in the port city, officials said, three gunnies parked an Indus Corolla car at the KPO entrance before hurling a hand grenade at the gate. Wearing shalwar kameez, the gunnies brought with them "three bags of food", indicating their preparation for a prolonged siege, DIG East-Zone Muquddas Haider, who was among the senior officers leading the operation, told Dawn on late Friday night.

While officials initially said exact number of gunnies could not be ascertained who attacked the metropolis police chief office at around 7:10pm, Adviser to Sindh Chief Minister Barrister Murtaza Wahab after midnight shared details of 23 casualties — four martyred and 19 injured — on Twitter.

He earlier had tweeted, "The latest information is that 4 people were martyred (2 coppers, 1 rangers & 1 civilian) while 14 people are injured, who are being treated. Out of the injured 1 person is critical while the condition of 13 injured persons is stable."

Multiple explosions were heard during the joint operation, which was completed at 10:48pm, by Pakistain Rangers, army and police personnel.

DIG Haider said there were three attackers, all clad in shalwar kameez. One of them went kaboom! on the fourth floor of the building during the operation, while two others were rubbed out on the rooftop, he said.

Footage shared on social media, though unverified, showed flames and smoke emitting from the top floor of the highrise, with the sound of a kaboom and a man uttering ’God is great’ while cautioning people to stay away and that another blast might occur.

Both tracks of the busy Sharea Faisal, which links the city centre with airport, remained shut for traffic for hours during the clearance operation.

According to Rangers’ spokesperson, an officer of brigadier rank led the anti-terrorist operation during which all five floors of the building were cleared at night.

In a statement, police spokesperson said this was a major operation, which was completed by DIGs of RRF, South and East, respectively, as well as Rangers and army personnel.

During the operation, according to the police, one terrorist blew up an explosive jacket while the police firing left his two accomplices others dead.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah also reached the Command and Control Centre at IGP office after receiving information about the attack and monitored the operation.

He directed the DIGs concerned and the Rangers officers to send personnel from their respective zones to the site.

Police surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed said that three bodies of law enforcers and a civilian were brought at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. She said the martyred officials were identified as police constable Ghulam Abbas and Rangers sub-inspector Taimur, while the identity of another police official could not be ascertained immediately.

A civilian, Ajmal Masih, was also among the dear departed, the police surgeon added.

The Rangers spokesperson later said the martyred SI Taimur originally hailed from Multan
...Home of the Multan Sultans...
, adding that their six personnel were also injured during the operation.

According Dr Syed, some of the injured were identified as Edhi worker Sajid, Rangers personnel Abdul Raheem, Imran, Tahir, Umair, Abdul Latif and Aftab, and coppers Latif, Abdul Khaliq, Rizwan, Haji Abdul Razzaq and Sarab.

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, meanwhile, told Geo News that the federal government was in touch with the Sindh police.

He said he had spoken to the chief secretary and IGP who confirmed that six to seven hard boyz entered the building by hurling a hand grenade after parking the vehicle. Since a general security threat existed following the Peshawar mosque attack, all the institutions were fully alert across the country, he said.

2 cops sentenced to death, six others to life in prison for killing teenager in Karachi
2021-10-26
[DAWN] An anti-terrorism court in Bloody Karachi

on Monday handed down death sentence
...the barbaric practice of sentencing a murderer to be punished for as long as his/her/its victim is dead...
to two police officials, who were serving as the guard and driver of the former chief of the police’s Anti-Car Lifting Cell (ACLC), for killing teenager Intizar Ahmed in a "planned encounter" in the city's Defence Housing Authority neighbourhood in 2018.The ATC judge found police constables Bilal Rasheed and Mohammad Daniyal, who were then posted as the gunman and driver of ex-ACLC chief (now DIG) Muqaddas Haider, guilty of shooting 19-year-old Intizar to death.

The court also awarded life imprisonment to six other ACLC officials, including then-station house officer Tariq Mehmood, former inspectors Tariq Raheem and Azhar Ahsan, then-head constable Shahid Usman and ex-constables Ghulam Abbas and Fawad Khan.

A seventh accused, Ghulam Abbas — another former head constable, was acquitted for want of evidence.

Intizar, who was studying in Malaysia, had returned to Pakistain for his holidays.

He was travelling in his car with a friend, Madiha Kayani
... four star general, Chief of Army Staff of the Mighty Pak Army. Kayani was the former Director General of ISI...
, on January 13, 2018, when coppers in plain clothes chased his car and shot him dead in DHA after he failed to stop the vehicle upon the cops' direction. Kayani had managed to escape the scene unscathed in a rickshaw.

"I am satisfied that the murderers of my son have been awarded the death sentence. It has been proved that both the accused rubbed out my son," Ishtiaq Ahmed, the victim's father, told Dawn.com after hearing the order pronounced by the ATC-VII judge, who conducted the trial at the judicial complex inside the central prison.

"But justice will be fully served when the sentences awarded to the accused are executed," Ahmed added.

A couple of months after Intizar's killing, Kayani in a video statement, which went viral on social media, had appealed to the Rangers and other law enforcement agencies to provide her security.

In July this year, the court had reserved its verdict after recording evidence and final arguments from the defence and prosecution sides.

All the undertrial coppers were indicted on May 15, 2018, for the student's murder. During the trial, the prosecution examined nearly 20 witnesses.

A ballistics expert had confirmed that official weapons of the ACLC personnel were used in the killing.

In their statements, recorded under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code, all the accused had denied the allegations.
No, no! Certainly not!
against them and claimed innocence.

Intizar’s killing was initially termed an act of assassination by police but after a few days, it transpired that ACLC officials were involved in it.

The investigation officer of the case had initially charge-sheeted nine officials.

The IO had later let off ex-head constable Ghulam Abbas, saying he was not present at the scene of the crime, but the court took cognisance of the matter and also initiated a trial against him.

The suspect had forcefully taken the second grade student to an empty building on August 15, Pind Dadan Khan Police Station SHO Ghulam Abbas Shah said quoting the victim's father. A case had also been registered on the same day, he added.

Police officials allegedly caught burying torture victim
2019-08-15
[DAWN] A man allegedly picked up by the police from his place of work two weeks ago was found murdered in the fields of Guliana on the second day of Eidul Azha, leading to the registration of a murder case against a sub-inspector and others on Tuesday.

The accused sub-inspector has been suspended following the registration of the case, but has yet to be arrested.

Saddar Division Superintendent of Police (SP) Rai Mazhar Iqbal told Dawn that no arrests have been made in connection with the murder so far. He claimed the investigation into the case will be carried out "purely on merit" and whoever is found guilty will be treated according to the law. He reiterated: "Investigation will be conducted on merit, merit and purely on merit."

The initial post-mortem report suggests that the victim was tortured.

In his FIR, the victim’s brother, Chehari resident Ghulam Abbas said that on July 27, four people in police uniforms led by a sub-inspector came to his home and the sub-inspector introduced himself as a station house officer.

He said the officials were travelling in four vehicles, one of which was a double-cabin police vehicle.

He said the police entered his home and took him and Sohail Gondal into custody and asked them about the whereabouts of his brother Mohammad Ilyas. Ilyas worked as a tractor driver for Shaukat Ali.

He said they accompanied the police to Shaukat Ali’s home in Mandra at dawn and found Ilyas before he started work. Ilyas was taken into custody by the sub-inspector and driven away in a private car.

Mr Abbas said that when he asked what crime his brother committed, the sub-inspector told him his brother was involved in a car deal. He said that despite their efforts they could not find any information on his brother because the police had taken him to Gujar Khan.

He said that on Tuesday, they were informed that the police had taken Ilyas’ body to the Gujar Khan Tehsil Headquarters Hospital and were preparing to bury him after declaring him an ’unclaimed body’.

He claimed that his brother’s tortured body was left in a deserted area on Guliana Road on Monday night, and Tuesday morning the sub-inspector and other police officials were preparing to bury the body as an unidentified individual.

He said he reached the site where they allegedly planned to bury his brother after he learned of the plan.

Mr Abbas said that when he saw his brother’s body, he found that he had been tortured. He then told police high-ups that his brother was illegally detained and tortured to death by police, after which a murder case was registered against the police officials.

Local residents and the victim’s relatives later blocked the G.T. Road to protest the police’s actions.

Station House Officer Chaudhry Ilyas said he was only posted to his office a couple of days ago, and the victim’s detention and custody was not in the notice of the cop shoppe.

He said the accused sub-inspector may have kept the victim at a personal location, adding that an FIR has been registered against him and unidentified accomplices.

He said the accused official beat feet from the graveyard and raids are being carried out to apprehend him.

Rawalpindi City Police Officer (CPO) Deputy Inspector General of Police Mohammad Faisal Rana took notice of the body found in the jurisdiction of the Gujar Khan cop shoppe whose heirs have claimed the victim died under police violence.

The CPO said that a case may be filed after obtaining a written application from the heirs of the dear departed.

A case was registered under section 302/34 with the Gujar Khan police.

DNA test shows suspect as serial rapist of children in Karachi
2019-05-16
[DAWN] Police on Tuesday informed an antiterrorism court that a detained suspect’s DNA sample had matched in at least four cases of alleged rape of minor girls in the metropolis.

Police claimed to have detained a suspect for allegedly trying to kidnap a minor girl with the intention to rape her within the remit of the Sukhan cop shoppe in 2018.

On Tuesday, the matter came up for hearing before the ATC-X judge, who is conducting trial in the judicial complex inside the central prison.

Assistant prosecutor general Ghulam Abbas Dalwani pointed out that separate reports had been filed by two investigating officers of five identical cases pertaining to alleged sexual assaults on minor girls.

In a report filed by DSP Ali Hassan Sheikh, the investigating officer of three identical cases stated that the suspect was caught while allegedly trying to kidnap a minor girl with the intention to commit rape of the child in the Sukhan area.

It further said that though the child was not subjected to any sexual assault, on "suspicion" the police obtained the suspect’s sample of the DNA and sent it to a laboratory for matching with those drawn from four minor girls, who had been subjected to sexual assault, but the cases had been pending trial since 2015.

The prosecutor disclosed that the medical report dramatically revealed that the suspect’s sample had matched with those of the five children, who were victims of sexual assault. Subsequently, the prosecution said the suspect’s involvement in other cases had been determined with medical evidence, thus he had been booked in those cases as well.

The prosecutor also submitted a report filed by DSP Khalid, the investigating officer of two of the five cases of sexual assaults on minor girls.

In the report, filed under Section 169 of the Criminal Procedure Code, IO Khalid recommended release of two suspects who were tossed into the calaboose in connection with the pending cases of child abuse.

Govt appoints administrator for JeM-linked seminary
2019-02-25
[DAWN] BAHAWALPUR: In pursuance of the federal government’s announcement following a decision made by the National Security Committee, the Bahawalpur district administration, after taking over the control of a seminary and a mosque said to be associated with the leadership of the proscribed organization Jaish-e-Mohammad
...literally Army of Mohammad, a Pak-based Deobandi terror group founded by Maulana Masood Azhar in 2000, after he split with the Harkat-ul-Mujaheddin. In 2002 the government of Pervez Musharraf banned the group, which changed its name to Khaddam ul-Islam and continued doing what it had been doing before without missing a beat...
(JeM), appointed administrators on Saturday to look after the two institutions.

According to the district administration, Mohammad Ali, district Auqaf administrator, and Ghulam Abbas, regional Auqaf administrator, have been assigned the duty to supervise the administrative affairs of Jamia Masjid Subhan Allah and Madressah al-Sabir, respectively.

Jamia Masjid Subhan Allah is located in the thickly populated area of the industrial area in Model Town-B of Bahawalpur while Madressah al-Sabir is situated on Bahawalpur-Ahmed East highway on the outskirts of the city.

Deputy Commissioner of Bahawalpur Shozeb Saeed, accompanied by other government officials, on Friday night visited the two institutions linked with Maulana Masood Azhar
...One of the major players in Pak terrorism. In early 1994, India incarcerated him for his terrorist activities. In 1995, foreign tourists were kidnapped in Jammu and Kashmir. The kidnappers included the release of Masood Azhar among their demands. One of the hostages managed to escape but the rest were eventually killed. In 1999, he was freed by the Indian government in exchange for passengers on hijacked Indian Airlines Flight 814 that had been diverted to Kandahar. The hijackers were led by Masood Azhar's brother, Ibrahim Athar. Once he was handed over to the hijackers, they fled to Pak territory despite the fact that Islamabad had earlier stated that any of the hijackers would be jugged at the border. The Pak government had also previously indicated that Azhar would be allowed to return home since he did not face any charges there. Shortly after his release, he made a public address to an estimated 10,000 people in Karachi, firing up the rubes against America and India...
, who led the JeM which was banned by the government in 2002.

Since then, special branch of police, Counter-Terrorism Department and other law enforcement agencies have regularly been monitoring the mosque and the madressah, particularly after introduction of the National Action Plan (NAP) against terrorism in 2015.

Maulana Azhar hit the headlines when he was released from an Indian jail in exchange of the passengers of a hijacked plane of the Indian Airlines in 1999.

The district administration on Saturday arranged a visit to Madressah al-Sabir by an electronic media team which found no evidence that the seminary was involved in terrorist activities, as claimed by Indian media. The media team was told that over 600 students were being imparted religious education by about 70 teachers at the seminary.

A contingent of personnel of law-enforcement agencies has been deployed at the seminary.

An interior ministry front man has said the takeover of the two institutions was aimed at expediting the implementation of the NAP. He denied Indian media reports that the seminary was involved in terrorist activities.

Cleric suffers burns in arson attack on mosque quarter
2015-12-08
[DAWN] SHIKARPUR: The Pesh Imam of a mosque belonging to the Shia community suffered burns when his Hujra (a residential quarter allotted to a prayer leader within a mosque) in Jamra village of Shikarpur was set on fire in the early hours of Sunday.

According to the victim, Maulvi Sabir Hussain Khoso, he was asleep in the Hujra at Majid Al-Mahdi when the arson attack took place. He said he woke up after feeling the heat of the fire and found himself surrounded by flames. He said he rushed out of the Hujra to save his life but suffered burns.

Maulvi Khoso claimed that he also smelt petrol fumes and saw three or four persons fleeing the mosque moments after he rushed out of his quarter.

Personnel from the Lakhi Ghulam Shah cop shoppe visited the mosque and also recorded the victim's statement.

Maulvi Khoso told them that the attackers allegedly belonged to a proscribed sectarian outfit and also identified one of them as Aurangzeb Khoso.

The victim was taken to the Shikarpur Civil Hospital where doctors referred him to the Sukkur Civil Hospital for treatment.

The incident and the victim's statement caused alarm in the local Shia community as leaders of various organizations including Quaid-e-Millat-e-Jafaria Allama Syed Sajid Ali Naqvi, Shia Ulema Council leader Maulana Zahooruddin Mekho, Azhar Hajano, Ghulam Abbas Bhayo, Sajjan Mahar, Nadir Hajano and Arz Mohammed Kharoos rushed to the village and visited the mosque. They condemned the attack and vowed to foil such conspiracies against the community. They urged the federal and Sindh governments to ensure safety and security of holy mans, leaders and members of the community and protection of its religious places.

However,
you can observe a lot just by watching...
Lakhi DSP Atta Mohammed Abbasi and Lakhi Ghulam Shah SHO Mumtaz Murawat quoting the chieftain and several members of the Khosa community in Shikarpur said that the attack might be the result of a dispute between Maulvi Sabir Khoso and certain Khoso community members. The coppers advised the Shia leaders not to give the incident a sectarian colour until they reached a conclusion over the actual motive.
