Paris knife attack suspect wanted to avenge Prophet cartoons, identity in question

and says he came from Mandi Bahauddin in Punjab province

French police are studying a video in which the man suspected of attacking people with a meat cleaver on Friday says he will commit an act of "resistance" after the republication of cartoons mocking the Prophet Mohammad in a satirical magazine.

The suspect, who is from Pakistain, was arrested soon after two people were maimed in front of the old offices of the Charlie Hebdo

magazine. Officials said his clothes were spattered in blood.

The video was found on the suspect's mobile phone, French media reported. Rooters could not independently authenticate the video recording. A police source confirmed a video was being examined.

In the video, the suspect identifies himself as Zeheer Hassan Mehmood and says he came from Mandi Bahauddin in Punjab

province. Starting to sob, he then recites poetry praising the Prophet Mohammad.

"If I'm sounding emotional, let me explain: here, in La Belle France, the caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad were made," he says in Urdu. "I am going to do (an act of) resistance today, Sept. 25."

Mehmood's father praised his son.

"My heart is filled with happiness," Arshad Mehmood told the online news site Naya Pakistain from the family home. "I can sacrifice all my five sons to protect the Prophet's honour."
Your terms are acceptable.
"He called us ... and said that the God's Prophet had chosen him, and assigned him to kill the blasphemers."
Mohammed’s judgement is questionable given that, despite all the blood and screaming, both of the chosen blasphemers are recovering. And the Prophet’s instrument will be out of circulation for quite some time
The cartoons were first published by Charlie Hebdo in 2006 and spurred Islamist murderous Moslems to target the magazine's office in 2015 in an attack that left 12 people dead and was claimed by al Qaeda.

The weekly, which moved to a secret location after the attack, republished the cartoons earlier this month to mark the beginning of the trial of 14 people with alleged links to the Charlie Hebdo killers.

Wearing a long tunic, the suspect said he was spiritually guided by Ilyas Qadri. Qadri is a Sunni holy man and the founder of Dawat-e-Islami,
... Barelvi Islam education outreach society based in Karachi, Pakistan linked to the Jamaat Ulema-e-Pakistain political party. They have a website and a television station, Madani Channel, and madrassahs in Britain, Greece, Spain, and Bangladesh...
a non-violent mostly peaceful organization spread across the globe.

Qadri says a person who commits blasphemy
...the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence to a deity, or sacred objects, or toward something considered sacred or inviolable. Some religions consider it to be a crime. In Pakistain you can commit blasphemy by looking cross-eyed at a Koran...
should be handed in to police, but if another individual were driven by their emotions to kill the blasphemer, the law should not apply.

Dawat-e-Islami did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Confusion surrounds identity of Paris meat cleaver attacker
Oh? How very interesting.
[IsraelTimes] Investigators say assailant identified himself as Hassan A.,
...would that be where the Ali came from? Hassan Ali?
an 18-year-old born in Pakistain, but he gave a different name in video in which he said he was targeting Charlie Hebdo
...A lefty French satirical magazine, home of what may well be the majority if the active testicles left in Europe...
There was confusion Monday over the identity of the man who injured two people in a meat cleaver attack in Gay Paree last week, which was condemned by the French government as an act of "Islamist terrorism."

Investigators said the assailant had identified himself as Hassan A., an 18-year-old born in Pakistain.

But in a video in which he said he was targeting the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo — the scene of a massacre by Islamist button men in January 2015 — the man said his name was Zaheer Hassan Mehmood.

Investigators found a photo of an identity document on the attacker’s cellphone of a man by the same name, aged 25, a source close to the investigation told AFP.

The authorities said the claimed identity of Hassan A. belongs to a young man born in the Pak town of Mandi Bahauddin.

It appears he entered La Belle France three years ago, and was not known to police and not known to have ever displayed signs of supporting radical Islam.

However a man claiming to be the suspect’s father, Arshad Mehmood, told AFP by telephone from Mandi Bahauddin that he was "very happy with what my son has done."

"My son Zaheer Hassan went to La Belle France two years ago," he said

"He protected the honor of the prophet, peace be upon him, by attacking those who have printed things about our prophet," he said. "The entire village has come to congratulate me."

"I hope the government can help in getting my son home. He should not be harmed in any way," he added.
Presumably Papa Dearest meant the Pakistani government. I can’t imagine the French would be amenable to returning him to the bosom of his village. Especially unharmed.
‘I WILL CONDEMN’
In a two-minute video recorded under the name of Zaheer Hassan Mehmood, the attacker announced that: "Today, Friday September 25, I will condemn" Charlie Hebdo, though he did not claim to act on behalf of any organization.

The attacker remained in jug Monday, along with five others who Sherlocks said were being held to learn more about the suspect’s "environment," though police believe he acted alone.

The five include three former roommates of the attacker, his younger brother, and an acquaintance.

Five more people have been released from custody, including a man identified as Youssef, 22, who claimed he was arrested while trying to stop the attack.
That would be the unnamed Algerian, 33, who apparently is neither of those things or they’d have said.
"I wanted to be a hero, I ended up behind bars," he told TF1 television Sunday.

The attack came three weeks into a trial of suspected accomplices of the authors of the January 2015 attacks on Charlie Hebdo and a Jewish supermarket, which also saw a policewoman bumped off in the street.

"Of course we, Charlie Hebdo, are on the front line again," Richard Malka, a lawyer for the satirical weekly, said on the margins of the trial.

French President Emmanuel Macron meanwhile told Monday’s cabinet meeting that "the terrorist threat still persists in our country," said government front man Gabriel Attal.

Macron said it was time to "re-examine, if necessary, a certain number of measures taken" in the light of the latest attack.

The head of the presidency’s anti-terror task force, Laurent Nunez, told AFP on Sunday that detection techniques had improved, but acknowledged that "we still need to tighten the net."

Mother of death row convict files petition
2014-12-30
[DAWN] The mother of a death row convict filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the dismissal of her son's petition appealing his death sentence ordered by a military court.

Sajida Parveen's son, Ihsan Azim, has been charged with murdering seven armymen on the banks of Chenab river near Gujrat district on July 2012 along with four other men Asif Idrees, Amir Yousaf, Kamran Aslam and Umar Nadeem.

LHC Judge Arshad Mehmood Tabassum on December 24 rejected Ms Parveen's petition.

The appeal was filed by advocate Laeeq Khan Swati in the Supreme Court.

Advocate Swati contended before the court that the military authorities did not provide the convict trial proceedings before filing the appeal in the military appellate court.

He requested the court to restrain the concerned authorities from executing the death sentence to his client. The appeal cited secretaries ministries of defence and interior as respondents.

Pak court suspends conviction of five attackers on Gujrat army camp
2014-12-23
[DAWN] The Lahore High Court's (LHC) Rawalpindi bench on Monday stayed the convictions of five prisoners who were handed the death penalty for involvement in an attack on an army camp in Gujrat in 2012.

The stay came over a petition filed by the counsel of one of the convicted men.

Justice Arshad Mahmood Tabassum of the LHC heard the petition filed by Advocate Laiq Khan Swati, who told the court that his client Ahsan Azim was not provided with any information pertaining to the case including the charge sheet as well as the summary of evidence and trial proceedings despite requests submitted earlier.

He added that his client's family members were suddenly told to hold a last meeting with the Azim as he was going to be hanged soon.

Ahsan Azim, hailing from Wah Cantt, is currently held at the Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore.

Kamran, Umar Nadeem, Ahsan Azim, Amir Yousuf and Asif Idrees were handed down death sentences by a military court for their involvement in an attack on an army camp in Gujrat in 2012. The attack had claimed the lives of at least seven security personnel.

Earlier on Friday, two former military men were executed in the Faisalabad

district jail.

Usman, a former soldier of the military's medical corps, was executed in relation to an attack on the headquarters of the Pakistain Army in 2009 in Rawalpindi. Moreover, Arshad Mehmood, who was a trooper and also hanged, was among the five people convicted for their role in an Al Qaeda-inspired liquidation attempt on Musharraf's life in late 2003.

The hangings on Friday were the first death sentences carried out after the government ended a six-year moratorium on executions, a move that appears to have come in response to the Beautiful Downtown Peshawar

tragedy that claimed the lives of over 140 people, most of them children.

On Sunday, four more convicts were executed at a district jail in Faisalabad.

In response, Taliban groups released messages vowing Dire Revenge for the deaths of their associates. Security has been tightened in and around jails and all major cities of the country have been put on high security alert to avoid any untoward incident.

Dr Usman, Arshad Mehmood executed in Faisalabad
2014-12-19
[DAWN] Aqeel alias Dr Usman and Arshad Mehmood have been executed in Faisalabad on Friday night, in the first capital punishment carried out in the country since Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif lifted the moratorium on the death penalty, sources said.

Usman a former soldier of the army’s medical corps, was executed in relation to an attack on the headquarters of the Pakistan Army in 2009 in Rawalpindi. Arshad Mehmood, was executed for an assassination attempt on former military ruler, General (retd.) Pervez Musharraf.

Security had been tightened at Faisalabad's central and district prisons ahead of the executions.

The black warrant for Dr Usman was signed by Army Chief General Raheel Sharif late on Thursday night.

The prime minister had lifted the moratorium a day after terrorists attacked Peshawar's Army Public School, killing 141 people, most of them children.

Eleven soldiers had lost their lives in the Oct 10, 2009 attack when 10 heavily armed militants wearing suicide vests stormed the army's General Headquarter (GHQ) holding off commandos for hours.

Dr Usman, who was caught injured during the Oct 10 raid on the army headquarters by militants, was sentenced to death in 2011 by a military court which had awarded prison terms to others in the GHQ attack case.

A retired soldier, Imran Siddiq, was awarded life imprisonment in the case at the time whereas three civilians — Khaliqur Rehman, Mohammad Usman and Wajid Mehmood — were given life terms while two others, Mohammad Adnan and Tahir Shafiq (both civilians), were given eight and seven years jail sentence respectively.

Apart from Dr Usman, who was caught during the attack, other serviceman and five civilians were found guilty of abetment.

Their trial by the military court, which was headed by a brigadier, had lasted over five months and had taken place at an undisclosed location.

Mehmood, who was a trooper, was among the five sentenced to be hanged for their role in an Al Qaeda-inspired assassination attempt on Musharraf’s life in late 2003.

Musharraf, who was in power at the time, narrowly escaped the bid when two suicide car bombers rammed his motorcade on Dec 25, 2003, in Rawalpindi. Fifteen people were killed in that attack.

It was the second attempt on Musharraf’s life that month, and several soldiers, air force personnel and militants were arrested after the two attacks.

Mehmood and civilians Zubair Ahmed, Rashid Bhatti, Rashid Qureshi, Ghulam Sarwar and Akhlaque Ahmed were convicted in the case.

Attack on police station leaves head constable dead
2013-01-31
[Dawn] A policeman was killed and two others were maimed in a brazen attack launched by suspected snuffies on the Sohrab Goth cop shoppe on Tuesday evening, police said.

The attack on the Sohrab Goth cop shoppe, situated in a thickly populated area, was a grim reminder of a last month terror attack on a Rangers picket near Al-Asif Square within the jurisdiction of the same cop shoppe in which two Rangers personnel had been killed and three coppers maimed.

DIG-East Abdul Aleem Jafferi said that the attack was carried out at the main gate of the cop shoppe when coppers deputed at pickets in the area returned to the cop shoppe after completing their duty to deposit their weapons.

The police said that initially a man came close to a policeman guarding the main gate and shook his hand in a bid to distract his attention. A police mobile van was at the main gate and the policeman was lifting the barrier to let it in when four men on two cycle of violences raked the cop shoppe building with submachine-gun fire.

"They used an AK-47 assault rifle to carry out the shooting," the DIG said, adding that the police also returned fire but the attackers managed to escape.

Three coppers, one of whom was inside the cop shoppe, were maimed in the attack. They were immediately rushed to the nearby Patel Hospital and were later taken to the Aga Khan University Hospital for treatment.

However,
ars longa, vita brevis...
Head Constable Zulfiqar Naqvi died on his way to hospital. Constables Ghulam Nazuk and Arshad Mehmood were admitted for treatment.

Before the attack, the police had rounded up several suspects from the adjoining localities in the Sohrab Goth area. Although it was not clear whether any of the placed in durance vile
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
suspects were kept in the Sohrab Goth cop shoppe, the police claimed that the suspects were kept at different cop shoppes.

"No suspect was present in the lock-up of the Sohrab Goth cop shoppe at the time of the attack...the detained suspects had been transferred to different cop shoppes," the DIG claimed.

He said that it could be an attack to demoralise the police or it could be a reaction to the recent arrests in the Sohrab Goth area.

Another police officer told Dawn that the attack was carried out by snuffies active in the neighbourhood and it was possibly connected with the arrest of the suspects.

Following the attack, a heavy contingent of the police was sent to the cop shoppe.

The police collected around over a dozen spent bullet casings of AK-47 assault rifle from the crime-scene.

The attack took place within the remit of the Zaman Town cop shoppe in the early hours of the day when Sub-inspector Abdul Hameed, 45, son of Maula Bux Chachar, came out of his home in Sector 50-E of Korangi.

The police said that the assailants had an altercation with the Rangers man before they shot him. The victim received a single shot to his head and was struck down in his prime, they said.

The body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for legal formalities and, later, handed over to his heirs.

SHO Dilawar Jokhio of the Zaman Town cop shoppe said that Abdul Hameed was currently posted in the Sindh Rangers' nursing wing in Sanghar district and had been in Bloody Karachi

for 12 days to spend his one-month leave.

Father of six, the dear departed had two wives who lived together with him.

The police quoting the victim's family said that on Thursday morning, Hameed left home after receiving a phone call. The police, however, could not find his cellphone till late in the night, and assumed that it might have been taken away by the assailants.

Paperwork was started but nothing else was done against unidentified persons on the complaint of the victim's brother, Imdad Chachar.

Meanwhile,
...back at the cheese factory, all the pieces finally fell together in Fluffy's mind...
a handout issued by the Pakistain Rangers, Sindh, regarding Hameed's murder said that he was in civil clothes when attacked.

In Noorani Basti, falling within the remit of the same cop shoppe, a factory worker was killed by unknown assailants.

The SHO said that Asad Husain, 32, was shot by two attackers riding a cycle of violence while he was sitting outside his home in Korangi.

The victim suffered six bullet wounds and was struck down in his prime, he added.

The police officer claimed that a narcotics-related case was registered against him but the motive for his murder was not immediately clear.

Body, maimed man found dumped

Unidentified gunnies shot two persons and dumped them at a place near the Spencer's Eye Hospital near Lea Market on Thursday. One of the victims succumbed to his wounds when police reached the scene early in the morning.

He said that both men might have been kidnapped somewhere and shot before being dumped near the Spencer's Hospital.

Clad in white shalwar-kameez, the dear departed, who had sustained three bullet wounds to the head and chest, remained unidentified and his body had since been removed to the Edhi morgue.

An FIR (98/2012) was registered at the Napier cop shoppe against unknown persons on behalf of the state.

Two bodies found

The perforated carcass of a teenaged boy was found at a place on Mauripur Road on Thursday morning.

According to the police, the body was found in front of Dua Hotel near Crown Cinema within the remit of the Kalri cop shoppe.

Area SHO Safdar Mashwani said the victim had received three bullets to the head, neck and chest, and assumed that he might have been a Lyari

resident.

The body was first shifted to the Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination and then to the Edhi morgue for identification.

An FIR (136/2012) was registered against unknown killer on behalf of the state.

2012-01-07
[Dawn] Three persons, including a father and his son, were rubbed out in a family feud outside their home near Punjab House here on Thursday, police said.
"Do you have a theory on this case, Officer Friendly?"
"I think they're dead."

Mohammad Ashraf, his son Ghulam Mustafa and their relative Habib Khan were heading towards Marrir Chowk when their rivals blocked their way and opened fire on them.
"Yew jest stop right where yew air, Mohammad, Ghulam and Habib!"
The three were struck down in their prime, said the police.
[BANG! BANG! BANGETY BANG!]
"Aaaiiieee! I am undone!"
"Aaaiiieee! Rosebud!"
"Aaaiiieee! Pain! Brief pain! [THUD!] Rattle...

Panic and fear gripped the surrounding areas as the gunshots rang out.
"Remain calm! All is well...!"
[TRAMPLE!]

The younger son of the victim called the police for help;
"Operator! Get me the police!"
however, the attackers numbering six beat feet before the police arrived.
"Curly-toed slippers, don't fail us now!"
Azeem Khan, the elder brother of Habib Khan, in his statement recorded with the Civil Lines police stated that he along with Arshad Mehmood was sitting at the corner of a street in the katchi abadi near Punjab House
"Yeah. We wuz just sittin' on the corner, mindin' our own bidnid..."
when he saw Ashraf, Ghulam Mustaf and Habib Khan coming towards their home.
"... when we seen dese guyz comin' toward our house!"
He said as the three reached at the corner of a narrow street, Jehanzeb, his brother Khan Vaiz and some other persons carrying pistols blocked their way.
"Yeah. Dey was heeled an' da dear departed wudn't..."
He said Jehanzeb and his brother were nephews of deceased Ashraf.
"So dey wuz like relatives, y'know?"
Azeem Khan said Jehanzeb shouted at Ashraf that he would teach him a lesson and then opened fire on him.
"Son of a diseased camel! I'll show you! [BANG!]
In the meanwhile, Dilawar targeted Ghulam Mustafa and Miskeen shot Habib Khan.
[BANG! BANGETY BANG!]
Fearing that the attackers might kill them, Azeem Khan and Arshad Mehmood did not try to intercept the attackers, who beat feet after firing into the air.
"Don't nobody try to follow us! [BANG!]... [QUACK!]"
The complainant said in his statement that all the attackers were carrying 30-bore pistols.
"How d'you hit anything with a 30-bore? They're kiddy guns! Now this is a gun!"
"Holy spit! How d'you lift that thing?"

According to the police, the motive behind the triple murder was an old enmity between the two groups who belonged to the same family.
"Yeah, Great Uncle Mahmoud spilled soup on Cousin Chaudry, seven times removed, at Cousin Fatima's wedding to Cousin Adullah. There wuz a minor altercation at the time, only seven dead and a couple dozen wounded. Nobody thought much of it at the time."
There had been a minor brawl between the groups some one-and-a-half years back but the issue was settled and a patch-up made between them.
"Now youse guyz shake hands and make up!"
"[grumble]"

Murky world of dealing with militants
2011-04-26
[Dawn] Last week the capital police incarcerated a jihad boy affiliated with Tehrik-i-Taliban Punjab chapter for his alleged involvement in the kidnapping of an inspector and a patwari.

The jihad boy -- Sibghatullah Mavia -- was incarcerated from Vehari. He is the brother of Asmatullah Mavia, head of the TTP Punjab chapter, and is reported to have studied at Bahauddin Zakariya University Multan.

Sibghatullah has allegedly led a gang that has carried out a number of kidnappings for ransom. During interrogation he confessed to his involvement in kidnappings, adding that a jihad boy from Khanewal was also involved.

Sibghatullah is in policy custody for the moment.

However,
The contradictory However...
his capture is not just being celebrated because he can be held accountable for the crimes he has committed but for what his release can lead the Taliban to do.For the past few months, the police have been focusing on the case of the
kidnapping of Inspector Rana Pervez and Patwari Arshad Mehmood. Both went missing from Tarnol on December 3; later it was said that they were kidnapped by the TTP.

Investigations revealed that the TTP wanted to kidnap a property dealer -- Rana Sadique -- for ransom. The kidnappers set up an appointment with him on the pretext of wanting to buy property.

However,
The contradictory However...
Sadique could not make it to the appointed meeting and instead sent his 'brother', Rana Pervez. The latter, who is an inspector in the police force, is a business partner of Sadique and close enough for the property dealer to consider him a brother.

The inspector asked the 'prospective buyers' to meet him at his house in sector G-8/4 from where they all left together to see the property in Tarnol. En route they also picked up the patwari.

No one has since seen the inspector or the patwari. Oddly enough, the kidnappers have not contacted the inspector's family or the police for ransom money or made any other kind of a demand in exchange for his release. However,

the patwari's family has been hit by a ransom demand.

On December 20, three suspects were picked up when they arrived at Chungi No 26 to get the ransom the patwari's family had agreed to pay -- one of them was a homeopathic doctor.

all the accused were released on bail after a behind the scene agreement with the Taliban that in exchange the two hostages would be freed. Three month later, the families of Rana Pervez and Arshad Mehmood continue to wait.

This delay has worried the police, as in their experience, the TTP finalises a deal (financial or otherwise) in 20 days to a month and sets the victim free after getting the amount. A four-month period is rare, to say the least. However,

mediators, which include tribal jirgas that have been organised to secure their release, assure the police that the two hostages are still alive.

In the meantime, the Sherlocks have rounded up around a dozen people, including cut-throats as well as the secretary of a slain leader of banned Sunni bad turban group. These people have been picked up not to provide leads but to serve as 'bait' to get the kidnappers to agree to free the hostages in exchange for these people in the custody of the state.

Sibghatullah is also seen as part of this 'bait'.

the questions that no one seems to be asking is why the police are legitimising a kidnapping by getting involved in negotiations with the kidnappers and even carrying them out. Just because the police are not handing over money and are offering hostages in exchange does not make their action any better.

The world over, the police tend to discourage distraught families from handing over the ransom in exchange for kidnapped hostages. But in Pakistain, the police, instead of stopping the families, are carrying out the exchange themselves; more serious still, they are picking up people and holding them in jug till they can be exchanged for the hostages. Surely, this is unethical and far from legal.

Agreed that kidnapping is emerging as a serious crime in Pakistain and the law enforcement personnel have to make every effort possible to ensure the release of the innocent citizens. However,

carrying out exchanges may serve to encourage the kidnappers. We need a long term solution, not a short term firefighting.
