School headteacher assaulted over student caning
2015-03-29
[Dhaka Tribune] Angry guardians and locals in Bagha upazila beat up the head teacher of a school and broke two of his teeth after a teacher caned 42 eighth-graders for refusing to pay picnic fees yesterday.

Nazrul Islam, headmaster of Chandipur High School, was assaulted when he came out of his office and tried to calm the guardians aggrieved at the beating of the students by assistant teacher Md Ali, police said.

The picnic was scheduled to be held today.

Several students of the eighth grade said Ali began caning them when many of the 106 students refused to pay the picnic fee of Tk100, terming it too high.

Ruma Yasmin, a student of the class, was maimed in the beating and the news quickly spread among locals.

Hafizur Rahman, father of a student, rushed to the school but Ali blasted him and forced him to leave school premises, said a student.

"The father came back shortly with several other guardians and locals, and demonstrated on the school compound demanding removal of the headmaster and Ali," said Bagha cop shoppe Officer-in-Charge Aminur Rahman.

Bagha Upazila Nirbahi Officer Badal Chandra Haldar arrived on the scene along with police around 11am and took Nazrul to the upazila health complex.

But the guardians confined Ali to the school building till midday.

OC Aminur said police later rescued Ali and took him to the cop shoppe.

The headmaster told news hounds that the beating of the students was an unexpected and sorrowful incident.

Ali meanwhile said he lightly caned the students as he could not easily accept the refusal to pay the fee.

But some guardians claimed that Ali had previous records of beating students over trivial issues and demanded that he be disciplined.

The upazila nirbahi officer told the Dhaka Tribune that Ali had submitted his resignation in the face of protest by the guardians.

Four found dead in three districts
2014-08-18
[Dhaka Tribune] In separate incidents, four people were found dead in Narayanganj, Khulna and Rajshahi districts yesterday.

In Narayanganj, the body of an unidentified young man, aged around 30, was found inside a sack by a road at Kashipur in Fatullah of Sadr upazila in the morning.

Akbar Hossain, sub-inspector of Fatullah Model cop shoppe, said being informed by locals, police recovered the body and sent it to Narayanganj 100-bedded General Hospital for an appointment with Dr. Quincy.

However,
nothing needs reforming like other people's bad habits...
the hands and legs of the youth were not found in the sack.

Police suspected that miscreants killed the youth sometime at night and dumped the body there.

In another incident, the floating body of a Class IV student of Joygobinda School, Adar Chowdhury, 12, was recovered from the Buriganga River at Alirtek in Narayanganj city at noon.

Some fishermen recovered the body from the river.

In Khulna, the body of a housewife, Dipali Odhikari, 35, wife of Kalidash Odhikari, was recovered from her house at Boyra Sardarpara in the city in the morning.

Police recovered the slaughtered body of Dipali from the house after being informed by locals that bad odour was coming out from the locked house, said Maruf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sonadanga cop shoppe.

Police suspected that Dipali's husband Kalidash slaughtered her two or three days back and then fled to India.

In Rajshahi, police recovered the body of an unidentified young man from a mango orchard at Harina village in Bagha upazila in the morning.

Aminur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bagha Police Station, said locals spotted the body of the youth, aged around 30, with his hands and legs tied with ropes in the orchard beside Tentulia-Harina road at about 11:30 am and informed police.

Later, police recovered the body and sent it to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital morgue for an appointment with Dr. Quincy.

Police suspected that the young man might have been strangled sometime on Saturday night.

Jihadi books, police uniforms seized from city house
2010-09-25
[Bangla Daily Star] Police seized a huge number of jihadi publications, several pairs of police uniform and replica shotguns and handguns from a two-storey building in the capital's Elephant Road yesterday.

New Market police early in the morning raided the place based on a complaint that some youths had been trying to break into the building. When police reached the spot the myrmidons were gone and the residents were not home.

Yesterday's recovery also includes books and booklets of Bangladesh Jamaat-e Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir, national flags, cassettes and CDs.

Syed Nurul Islam, additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of Ramna zone, said, "Earlier in April, police recovered a huge number of jihadi books and documents from the same house."

The building belongs to Prof Aminur Rahman Majumder, a teacher of Soil, Water and Environment Department of Dhaka University and joint convener of BNP-Jamaat backed White Panel of DU teachers. Locals said the building was left abandoned for the next few months till the new tenants moved in.

Police jugged Prof Majumder's nephew Mostafizur Rahman, who is also a DU employee, and his caretaker Siddique Ullah in connection with yesterday's recovery. The arrestees live in the next building, which also belongs to Prof Majumder. The professor lives in a DU teachers' quarter.

Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch...
Prof Majumder told journalists that he did not know that the tenants of the building were Shibir muscle.

ADC Nurul Islam said the recovered items indicate unlawful activities. Police are investigating the matter and actions will be taken against those who are involved in this, he added.

Police said they suspect Shibir activities mainly of DU and Dhaka College units used to be operated from here.

Locals, however, alleged that the building has been a Shibir den for the last several years.

Banglabanks asked to freeze corruption suspects' accounts
2007-03-03
Bangladesh authorities waging a corruption crackdown have asked banks to freeze the accounts of 53 prominent politicians and business tycoons suspected of massive tax evasion. “The National Board of Revenue has ordered all the banks to freeze the accounts of 53 persons against whom there are allegations of corruption,” said SM Aminur Rahman, managing director of the state-owned Sonali Bank. “We have already asked our branches to freeze the transactions of these people until further notice,” he added.

The 53 included 50 politicians, bureaucrats and businessmen the Anti-Corruption Commission named earlier this month in a list of graft suspects. The new military-backed interim government has already detained 37 high-profile figures with links to both the main political parties on corruption charges. The government’s anti-graft drive is aimed at cleaning up politics and holding credible elections after polls scheduled for January 22 were cancelled amid rigging allegations. President Iajuddin Ahmed scrapped the polls amid escalating violence on January 11. He also imposed emergency rule and stepped down as head of the previous caretaker government.
