Pakistani forces kill, arrest dozens after IS shrine bombing
2017-02-18
[SCMP] Pak security forces killed dozens of suspected forces of Evil on Friday, a day after Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. claimed a suicide kaboom that killed more than 80 worshippers at a Sufi shrine in the latest of a series of attacks across the country.

The bombing at the famed Lal Shahbaz Qalandar shrine in southern Sindh province was Pakistain’s deadliest attack in two years, killing at least 83 people and underlining the threat of bully boy groups like the Pak Taliban and Islamic State.

With authorities facing angry criticism for failing to tighten security before the bomber struck, analysts warned that the wave of violence pointed to a major escalation in Islamist bully boys’ attempts to destabilise the region.

"This is a virtual declaration of war against the state of Pakistain," said Imtiaz Gul, head of the independent Centre for Research and Security Studies in Islamabad.

With pressure growing for action, Pakistain demanded that neighbouring Afghanistan hand over 76 "terrorists" it said were sheltering over the border.

The bombings over five days have hit all four of Pakistain’s provinces and two major cities, killing around 100 people and shaking a nascent sense that the worst of the country’s bully boy violence may be in the past.

A series of military operations against holy warrior groups operating in Pakistain had encouraged hopes that their leaders were scattered.

"But this has led to a degree of complacency within our civil-military leadership that perhaps they have completely destroyed these elements, or broken their back," Gul said.

If so, that impression has been shattered by the events of recent days.

At Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, the white marble floor was still marked by blood on Friday, and a pile of abandoned shoes and slippers was heaped in the courtyard, many of them belonging to victims.

Outside, protesters shouted slogans at police, who they said had failed to protect the shrine.

"I wish I could have been here and died in the blast last night," a devastated Ali Hussain told Rooters, sitting on the floor of the shrine.

He said that local Sufis had asked for better security after a separate bombing this week killed 13 people in the eastern city of Lahore, but added: "No one bothered to secure this place".

Anwer Ali, 25, rushed to the shrine after he heard the kaboom, and described seeing dead bodies and chaos as people expeditiously departed at a goodly pace.

"There were threats to the shrine. The Taliban had warned that they will attack here, but authorities didn’t take it seriously," Ali said.

Sindh police chief A.D. Khawaja said on Friday that the corpse count had reached 83 people with scores more maimed.

Bahrain arrests 2 men, seeks 1 in bombing that killed woman

two men and is seeking a third over a June highway bombing that killed a woman and maimed three of her children.

An Interior Ministry statement late on Tuesday accused the two men arrested -- 35-year-old Hassan Jassim Hassan al-Haiki and 26-year-old Hussain Ibrahim Ali Hussain Marzooq -- of receiving military training from Iran.

It says the third suspect, 27-year-old Hussain Ahmed Abdullah Ahmed Hussain, also received military training from Iran and had fled to the Islamic Theocratic Republic.
Another Ynet article adds:
Iran on Wednesday denied any involvement.

An Interior Ministry statement late Tuesday says al-Haiki was taught "in making and using weapons and explosives from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard," whom acts as the country's paramilitary force.

Police arrest Christian labourer for blasphemy in Kasur
2015-09-06
[DAWN] Police said Saturday they have tossed in the calaboose
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
and imprisoned a Christian man accused of blasphemy in Punjab's Kasur district.

Blasphemy is a hugely sensitive issue in Pakistain, with even unproven allegations often prompting mob violence, and acquittals in court are rare.

"A Christian labourer named Pervaiz Masih was arrested earlier this week and sent on judicial remand for passing derogatory remarks against the Prophet (PTUI!)," a local police official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Ali Hussain, a senior police official in the area, confirmed the incident.

He said the accused, a labourer, was working with several Moslem colleagues when the incident occurred.

"They were working on a small construction site, one Moslem fellow was listening to religious speech while the accused was working," he said, adding that when the accused told his colleague to get back to work they had an argument during which the Christian man made derogatory remarks about the prophet of Islam.

"We have started the paperwork but haven't done much else under section 295C against the accused. The alleged incident occurred in Kasur district, around 54 kilometres (34 miles) southeast of Lahore."

Under Pakistain's stringent blasphemy laws, insulting the Prophet (PTUI!) carries the death penalty, though the country has never executed anyone for the crime.

But anyone convicted, or even just accused, of insulting Islam, risks a violent and bloody death at the hands of vigilantes.

Bonded labourer Shehzad Masih and his pregnant wife Shama Bibi were beaten by a mob of 1,500 people then thrown into a furnace last year in a crazed reaction to rumours they had thrown pages of the Koran into the garbage.

Can Iraq become world's largest oil producer?
2010-09-29
We haven'tbeen able to go after Saudi Arabian support of jihadis -- and of the jihadi mindset through the financing of Wahhabi mosques and imams around the world -- because the impact on oil production would crash the world economy. Once Iraq and other sources are pumping enough oil to replace Saudi Arabian production, that hindrance evaporates.
[Al Arabiya] Iraq has been grabbing headlines lately, not only because of the uncertainty surrounding the formation of the new government, but also due to the great potential the country holds when it comes to foreign investments, particularly in the oil sector. Not even the delay in passing the hydrocarbon law nor the ongoing disputes with Kurdistan have deterred investments from flowing in.

Iraq has already signed 11 deals with foreign oil companies which will see its production quintuple to about 12 million barrels per day (mbpd) by 2017. Such a boost would threaten Saudi Arabia's status as the world's biggest oil producer, whose current production capacity is estimated at 11 mbpd.

However,
The infamous However...
Saudi Arabia has already announced plans to increase its production capacity to over 12 mbpd. Going back to Iraq, there has been lots of speculation regarding whether or not the country would be able to meet its ambitious goal in such a short time.

Those who argue that Iraq can increase its production to 12 mbpd base their argument on the fact that Iraq has huge oil reserves, many of which are still undiscovered, estimated at 350 billion barrels. Official figures on the other hand estimate Iraq's proven oil reserves at 115 billion barrels, valued at $9 trillion based on current oil prices.

On the sidelines of the Iraq Future Energy 2010 conference, Dr. Ali Hussain, an oil consultant, argued that another factor is the cost of production of Iraqi oil which is the lowest in the world; not to mention the fact that Iraq has the capabilities to export through a number of countries including Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait. Furthermore, Dr. Hussain stresses that Iraq will be able to market and sell its extra production as the International Energy Agency forecasts that demand for oil will grow 23% from current levels to reach 106 mbpd by 2030. In addition to this, Dr. Hussain says: "Iraq needs to make use of its oil wealth in order to rebuild its economy".

Abu Zandal on fresh remand
2010-09-24
[Bangla Daily Star] Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday in a fresh remand prayer told a Dhaka court that Harkatul Jihad al Islami (Huji) leader Abu Zandal collected grenades from BNP leader Abdus Salam Pintu's residence and threw those on an Awami League rally.

Third Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ali Hussain placed Zandal on a two-day remand after he was produced before it on completion of his five-day remand.

But CID Special Superintendent of Police Abdul Kahar Akond, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, prayed for a three-day remand for Zandal and also submitted a forwarding report where he said Zandal admitted his involvement with supplying grenades used on the rally.

The forwarding report also said, after consultation with Huji chief Mufti Abdul Hannan, Zandal brought grenades from Pintu, another accused in the case, and threw those on the rally on August 21, 2004 that AL Chief Sheikh Hasina was addressing.

Moreover, Zandal had given important information about the grenade attacks. So, he needs to be remanded to realise more clues, the IO said.

The case was filed for killing people during the grenade attack and another case was filed under the Explosive Substances Act.

Zandal, who was jugged from Gazipur on February 14, 2008, was earlier remanded for 14 days in the two cases.

At least 23 people, including Ivy Rahman, were killed and scores were injured in the grenade attacks on the Awami League rally at Bangabandhu Avenue in 2004.
