Online recruitment of Muslims: Why the radicalisation scenario in Bengal is worrisome
2021-11-06
[OneIndia] The National Investigation Agency earlier this week arrested a suspected terrorist of the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh
The JMB is said to be the youth front of Al Mujahideen, the parent organization that began working toward establishing Bangladesh as an Islamic state in the mid 1990s, which remains obscure and probably defunct today. Other organizations, such as Jama'atul Jihad, JMB, Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB), Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HUJI), Hizbut Tawhid, Tawhidi Janata, Islami Jubo Shangha, Islami Shangha, Al Falah A'am Unnayan Shanstha and Shahadat-e al Hiqma are believed to be part of the Al Mujahideen network. The JMB at its peak was reported to contain at least 100,000 members, and an alleged 2,000-man suicide brigade, few of whom actually exploded. JMB allegedly received financial assistance from individual donors in Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Libya. Reports have claimed that funding of JMB by international NGOs like Kuwait based Society of the Revival of Islamic Heritage (RIHS) and Doulatul Kuwait, Saudi Arabia based Al Haramaine Islamic Institute and Rabita Al Alam Al Islami, Qatar Charitable Society and UAE-based Al Fuzaira and Khairul Ansar Al Khairia. The top leadership of JMB was captured in 2005 and hung in 2007, which pretty much shot their bolt.
from West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district.

The NIA personnel conducted a search operation while acting on a tip-off. The search was conducted in the Subhasgram area following which the JMB terrorist hailing from Bangladesh was arrested. The arrested persons has been identified as Abdul Mannan Bachu.

This group of the Taliban is led by Mullah Rasul, the incident reportedly happened at around 10 pm local time in the Guzara district of Herat province.

Conflicts Displace Thousands of Families in Kunduz
2020-08-24
[ToloNews] At least 5,000 families have been displaced in the northern province of Kunduz following heavy festivities on the outskirts of Kunduz city and some districts of the province.

Earlier this week, four bases of Afghan forces fell to the Taliban

along the road that connects Kunduz city with Khan Abad district to the north of the province.

According to officials, the government forces manning the Kunduz city gates were on alert on Saturday evening following the fall of the four army bases.

"At least 5,000 families have been displaced in Khan Abad and Imam Sahib districts and the center and the outskirts of Kunduz city," said Yusuf Ayubi, head of the Kunduz Provincial Council.

Some of the displaced persons said they want more attention from the government to the Kunduz situation.

"The festivities have been ongoing in our village for the last 15 days. Our village and seven mosques are under threat. You will hear the sound of mortars, rockets and Kalashnikov guns every day," said Abdul Fatah, a displaced person in Kunduz.

"We neither oppose the Taliban nor the government forces. We have been stuck between the two and are burning like wood," said a displaced person.

On Saturday, a large number of Kunduz residents held a protest in Kunduz city, criticizing what they called the government institutions’ inattention to the threats the province faces. The protesters said the inattention has increased the influence of the Taliban in the province.

"I visited all security belts of the city. The situation is fully under our control," Kunduz governor Abdul Sattar Mirzakwal said.

Kunduz residents said the performance of the security forces in the province is questionable.

"There is no more than 1,500 Taliban fighters in Kunduz, but on this side, there are army corps, police headquarters, the National Directorate of Security
...the Afghan national intel agency...
, vehicles and equipment, but they carry bricks on these vehicles" said Abdul Mannan Zafarzoi, a Kunduz resident, blaming security agencies for lack of action against the Taliban.

"We travel through agricultural lands instead of roads due to fear from mines," said Ghani, a Kunduz resident.

This comes as violence has increased around the country amid peace efforts by the Afghan government. At least 10 civilians, including women and kiddies, were killed in two explosions in Ghazni and Jawzjan provinces on Sunday, according to local officials.

since the drives began a month ago.

In Thakurgaon, suspected drug peddler Shamim Hossain, 42, was killed in a "shootout" with police in the Nekmord area of Ranisankail Upazila. Shamim was the son of late Abdul Sattar.

Two coppers were also injured in the incident, which took place around 1:30am.

a patrol team conducted a raid in the Bhadreshwari area."

"Sensing police presence, a gang of drug peddlers started shooting, forcing law enforcement to retaliate. Shamim was killed on the spot in the ensuing shootout."

Police later sent the body to Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital morgue.

The OC said 300 pieces of Yaba tablets were seized from the scene. Shamim was accused in a number of cases in the Ranisankail cop shoppe.

In Dinajpur, a suspected drug peddler was killed in a "shootout" between two groups of drug pushers in the Kharipara area of Uthrail Union in the early hours of Friday.

Militants using secured messaging apps to dodge cops
2017-10-02
[Dhaka Tribune] Members of different Lion of Islam outfits have apparently smartened up and become tech-savvy as they are now using encrypted communications applications or apps more and more to maintain communications online, making it harder for the law enforcement agencies to trace them.

Encrypting the messages while chatting via these or other social media app is also making it tougher for police to recover the conversations most of the time from electronic devices seized from enjugged
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
Lion of Islams.

Police’s Anti-Terrorism Unit officials said the gunnies initially had used popular apps like Facebook and its Messenger, and Google Hangouts to communicate. But recently they have started using instant, but encrypted messaging apps such as Threema, Telegram and Wickr to keep their chats more secret.

At present, officials said, gunnies also use WhatsApp, Viber, Tango, Hike and several other similar apps as most of them have the encryption facilities, but they rapidly switch platforms to avoid detection.

Monirul Islam, chief of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit, in several earlier instances claimed that they had succeeded in weakening the existing Lion of Islam outfits in Bangladesh after the Gulshan cafe attack in July last year.

"We have broken most of the Lion of Islam networks. But they are trying to remain active on the internet. We are tracking their online activities through regular monitoring and working on preventing them by conducting raids," he said.

CTTC’s Additional Deputy Commissioner Abdul Mannan told the Dhaka Tribune: "The Lion of Islam groups have started giving technology-related training to their new recruits so that they can avoid our online traps."

"Militants now also prefer students with a science or IT background while recruiting as their network and communications are now fully internet-based. Every Lion of Islam group now has its own IT wing and they prefer online chats than talking over mobile phones."

Making their case, Sherlocks also said that the Federal Bureau of Investigation of the United States had examined 30 phones seized from Holey Artisan Bakery after the July 1, 2016, attack, and found that the attackers had used encrypted messaging app Threema to communicate with the gunnies outside.

A police inspector of the CTTC, requesting anonymity, somewhat confessed to the Dhaka Tribune: "It’s becoming harder for us to infiltrate their secret online network as the gunnies are now using updated apps.

"They may also use Silent Circle, Signal, Chat Secure, OS Tel or Red Phone, which are highly advanced and more privacy-conscious messaging apps, in the future. If they do that, it will become more challenging to trace their secret and online networks."

Bangladesh sentences 10 to death for plot to kill PM Hasina
2017-08-21
[DAWN] A Bangladesh court sentenced 10 bully boyz to death on Sunday over a failed plot to assassinate Prime Minister the loathesome Sheikh Hasina
...Bangla dynastic politician and current Prime Minister of Bangladesh. She has been the President of the Bangla Awami League since the Lower Paleolithic. She is the eldest of five children of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangla. Her party defeated the BNP-led Four-Party Alliance in the 2008 parliamentary elections. She has once before held the office, from 1996 to 2001, when she was defeated in a landslide. She and the head of the BNP, Khaleda Zia show such blind animosity toward each other that they are known as the Battling Begums..
by detonating a huge bomb at one of her rallies in 2000.

"The men were sentenced to death by a firing squad for planting a huge explosive near where Hasina was scheduled to speak during her first term as prime minister in 2000," prosecutor Shamsul Haq Badol told AFP.

"The bomb was planted in an attempt to kill Sheikh Hasina, high-ranking leaders of the (ruling) Awami League party and dignitaries," Badol said.

The 76-kilogram explosive was detected and defused, sparking a manhunt for those responsible for the liquidation attempt on Hasina, who is now in her third term as leader of Bangladesh's government.

Police allege the operation was led by Mufti Abdul Hannan, the late leader of murderous Moslem group Harakat ul Jihad Al Islami, which perpetrated a string of attacks across Bangladesh in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Hannan, the main accused in the failed bomb plot, was hanged in April for orchestrating a grenade attack on Britannia's envoy to Bangladesh in 2004.

The accused in this latest case wanted to kill Hasina because "they said she was not a Moslem, and an agent of India, and Islam can be established (in Bangladesh) only by killing her," Badol claimed.

He said another large explosive was found three days later at a helipad where Hasina was scheduled to land.

A separate prosecutor, Khandaker Abdul Mannan, said those sentenced to death were also implicated in other assaults, including a deadly bombing at a church and a secular festival.

Defence lawyer Faruque Ahmed said the defendants would lodge an appeal through the jail authorities.

"There are a lot of questions about this case. The defendants said they did not get justice," he told AFP. Hannan tried to kill Hasina in a separate grenade attack at a rally in the capital Dhaka in August 2004, in which 22 people were killed, Badol said.

Police, including the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit, Detective Branch and regular members in riot gear, are present in numbers along with Rapid Action Battalion and fire service.

2017-08-04
Resident in six villages in Kandahar’s Shah Wali Kot district, who have now moved to Kandahar, the provincial capital, claim the Taliban has “forcibly expelled” them from their villages for “cooperating with government”.

The residents also claimed that Taliban had kidnapped at least 70 people living in the district while they were traveling along the Kandahar-Zabul highway three weeks ago.

According to the residents, seven of the abducted victims have been killed, 20 were released and 32 of them are still being held by the Taliban.

“Taliban asked me to share information (about government) with them. I told them that I am not an agent. And then they threatened to kill me and told me to leave my village,” said Abdul Mannan, a resident of the district.

The women said the Taliban had taken their sons by force.

“Taliban has forcibly taken my son and the sons of others. We came here to the (Kandahar) city by foot. Some of our houses have been taken by the Taliban. We were threatened with death so we came here out of fear,” said Zarghona, another resident of the district.

The Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) has confirmed that the Taliban has kidnapped more than 70 residents of Shah Wali Kot district – killing seven of them. The incident happened on Kandahar-Zabul road at least three weeks ago.

“According to our initial information, at least 70 people have been kidnapped and all of them are civilians. This has been done by anti-government armed militants,” said AIHRC acting director in the south, Fakhruddin Fayiz.

“They (kidnappers) have killed seven people and have released some of them. We have some information that a number of the hostages have been freed,” he added.

Local officials in Kandahar have not commented on the report.

Taliban has claimed that they were not involved in the kidnapping.

Cow falls from sky; Indian man injured
2017-05-02
[Dhaka Tribune] A cow plummeted 70ft from a terrace and crushed a man in Kolkata, injuring the unfortunate man but losing his own bovine life in the process.

Forty three-year-old Abdul Mannan from Kolkata, West Bengal started Sunday morning like every other day. He walked to the local market at Masjid Bari Lane in Tiljala to buy fresh vegetables and other essentials for his family.

At around 8am, as he was checking out cucumbers at a roadside shop, however, his day took a turn for the worse. From the skies above, something heavy fell on him, causing him to collapse on the road.

Injured and fast losing consciousness, Mannan still managed to catch a glimpse of what hit him: an 85kg calf.

Locals and bystanders quickly whisked him off to a private nursing home, from where he was later shifted to a public hospital.

The cow, a six-month-old, which had dropped some 70ft, unfortunately was struck down in his prime. Though Mannan survived, he now has a fracture on his left leg, cracks in a rib and wounds on the back of his head, as well as multiple injuries all over his body that required as many as 18 stitches.

Much as it looked like it was raining cows, the reality was simple enough to explain. For the past week, the calf had been kept captive on the terrace of a nearby four-storey building by one of the building’s tenants.
That's one way to ensure a steady supply of dried dung for the cook stove.
