Hefazat renews threat to besiege Dhaka
2017-03-11
[Dhaka Tribune] Radical Islamist platform Hefazat-e-Islam has renewed its threats to besiege Dhaka if the Greek “idol” was not removed from the Supreme Court premises immediately.

Leaders and supporters demonstrated over the issue in different districts including Dhaka, Chittagong and Narayanganj after the Jumma prayers Friday.

The Chittagong chapter of Hefazat organised a rally on the Anderkilla Shahi Mosque premises, protesting the installation of the Lady Justice statue. They also demanded withdrawal of the case in which a court recently issued arrest warrants against 25 leaders and activists of the platform.

The Qawmi madrasa-based group that eyes Sharia law in the country has been actively campaigning to remove the sculpture that represents justice, claiming it an idol and branding the installation anti-Islamic.

They also threatened to assemble thousands of people and hold another rally at Shapla Chattar in Dhaka’s Motijheel, if necessary, like they did in 2013.

Alleging that “atheists” were campaigning in favour of the idol, the leaders said that Prophet Muhammad (SM) had been sent by Allah to demolish idols and therefore the idol on the Supreme Court premises must be removed.

Jahangir first ‘New JMB leader’ arrested alive
2017-01-16
[Dhaka Tribune] Jahangir Alam, more commonly known as Rajib Gandhi among militants, is the first New JMB leader that police have arrested alive who has direct connection with Gulshan terror attack.

Officials of the Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crimes (CTTC) unit of police believe that this arrest is pivotal for terror investigations as Jahangir can provide information that could tie up many loose ends.

“Gandhi is the first New JMB leader arrested alive who was involved in the planning of Gulshan attack. This development will help us make significant progress in the case,” said Additional Commissioner Monirul Islam, chief of CTTC.

Furthermore, Jahangir’s arrest was essential for the law enforcers to stop further stray attacks, he told reporters yesterday morning.

Starting off as a cook for Abdul Awal, son-in-law of banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) chief Shayakh Abdur Rahman, Jahangir went on to join New JMB and become a trusted deputy of Tamim Ahmed Chowdhury, the group’s coordinator who also orchestrated Gulshan attack.

“So we expect him to provide crucial and brand new information on both factions as well,” said a CTTC source.

A CTTC team arrested Jahangir at Elenga bus stand in Tangail on late Friday night. Investigators believe he was one of the key planners of the terror attack on Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan, Dhaka on July 1 last year.

Twenty-three people, including 17 foreigners and two police officers, were killed in the attack. International terrorist group Islamic State later claimed responsibility for the attack.

Jhalakathi judge killer JMB man executed
2016-10-17
[Dhaka Tribune] JMB member Asadul Islam Arif, who was given death penalty in Jhalakathi judges Jagannath Pare and Sohel Ahmed killing case, has been hanged in Khulna district jail.

The sentence was executed at 10:30pm on Sunday amid tight security, said Khulna Jail Super Kamrul Islam confirmed the Dhaka Tribune.

Khulna Deputy Commissioner Nazmul Ahsan, DIG Prisons (Jessore) Tipu Sultan, Magistrate Md Nur-e-Alam Siddique, Civil Surgeon Dr Md Abdur Razzak and Jail Superintendent Kamrul Islam were present during the execution.

Arif and six other JMB leaders including its founder Shayakh Abdur Rahman and second-in-command Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai were sentenced to death on May 29, 2006. The six were executed on March 29, 2007 after the Appellate Division upheld their sentence and the president turned down their mercy petitions.

The four others executed were Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) Majlish-e-Sura members Ataur Rahman Sunny, Abdul Awal Molla alias Omar alias Shakil Ahmed and Amjad Hossain alias Khalid Saifullah, and jacket wallah Iftekhar Hassan Al Mamun.

Arif, who was absconding during the trial, was tossed in the clink

on July 10, 2007 and appealed against his sentence. Finally the Appellate Division rejected his appeal on August 28 this year.

He is the first death-row convict executed at the Khulna jail after a decade. On May 9, 2004, the jail authorities hanged top criminal Ershad Sikder.

Hailing from Bandorgachhia village of Barguna, Arif’s relatives were allowed to meet him at noon. He would be buried at his in-law’s village in Bagerhat’s Morelganj, family sources said.

Senior assistant judges of the Jhalakathi court Jagannath Pare and Sohel Ahmed were killed in a suicide kaboom at Purba Chadkati of the town when they were going to the court on a microbus on November 14, 2005 as part of the JMB’s all-out attacks on the courts and law enforcers across the country.

Sohel was struck down in his prime while Jagannath departed this vale of tears at a hospital. JMB member Mamun, who was injured in the attack, was arrested from the spot.

The JMB recently said that their members had conducted the suicide kabooms after the August 17, 2005 series blasts as the then "government did not respond to their call for establishing Islamic rule in the country positively."

After the execution of the six JMB leaders, its members rubbed out Jhalakathi public prosecutor Haider Hossain who represented the state in the case "as the first Dire Revenge."

A Jhalakathi court in February last year sentenced to death five members of the JMB for the murder of Haider.

Hefazat issues ultimatum for Shyamal’s punishment
2016-05-21
[Dhaka Tribune] Hefajat-e-Islam
...a madrassa-based false nose and mustache of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, formed in 2010 to protest against secular education. In 2011 demonstrated violentyly against women's rights and in 2013 held large rallies demanding capital punishment of Shahbag Square protesters and banning women working outside the home...
, a fundamentalist Islamic outfit in Bangladesh, has issued a 72-hour ultimatum demanding punishment for Shyamal Kanti Bhakta, a Hindu school teacher accused of disrespecting Islam.

At a rally in Narayanganj after the Jumma prayers yesterday, Hefazat’s local branch, alongside several other religious organizations, also demanded resignation of Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid within the given time for reappointing Shyamal as headmaster of Piyar Sattar Latif High School.

Rifat Hasan, the student who first raised the allegations against Shyamal, was brought to speak before a crowd of around a thousand people in front of the DIT Mosque in the city.

Although Rifat denied making the allegations in an interview with a private TV channel, he reiterated them when speaking to BBC Bangla.

At yesterday’s rally, Rifat accused his teacher of name-calling Allah as an angry crowd roared in response.

DIT Mosque’s Khatib Abdul Awal, who is also the head of the local Hefazat chapter, claimed his organization had carried out an investigation into the incident and found Shyamal to be guilty.

On May 8, Shyamal Kanti Bhakta was beaten up by a mob and publicly humiliated by local politician Salim Osman after allegations of defaming Islam were brought against him. The politician’s actions triggered countrywide protests, resulting in the Education Ministry dissolving the school committee. Shyamal has consistently denied the charges.

Troubled BNP faces leadership crunch
2013-12-02
[Bangla Daily Star] The BNP is in a leadership crisis as many of its big shots are behind bars, while those out are either on the run to avoid arrests or too old for active politics.

In addition, party sources say, the top brass of its Dhaka city unit remains inactive fearing police action.

All these have left BNP chief Khaleda Zia
Three-term PM of Bangla, widow of deceased dictator Ziaur Rahman, head of the Bangla Nationalist Party, an apparent magnet for corruption ...
struggling to pick a leader to guide the party through, particularly after acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has gone into hiding to escape arrest, the sources add.

Party's Joint Secretary General Rizvi Ahmed had been acting as the party spokesperson since Fakhrul went into hiding following the arrest of three standing committee members -- Moudud Ahmed, MK Anwar and Rafiqul Islam Mia -- on November 8.

Khaleda's adviser Abdul Awal Mintoo and her special assistant Shimul Biswas were also jugged

violence.

Things took a turn for the worse for the party after police arrested Rizvi from its Nayapaltan office early on Friday on similar charges.

To carry out the party's official activities and handle the press in Fakhrul's absence, Rizvi had been staying at the party office round the clock. To evade arrest, he never came out of the office since November 8.

Following Rizvi's arrest, the party asked Salahuddin Ahmed, another joint secretary general, to serve as acting spokesperson. But instead of appearing in public, he is making video speeches from an unknown location and sending those to various television channels. He has been doing this to avoid arrest, according to the sources.

Salahuddin is also keeping contacts with a section of media through his mobile phone, but he keeps his phone switched off most of the time so that police cannot track him, they added.

From their hideouts, Fakhrul and Salahuddin are issuing press statements and sending it to the media via email.

At the moment, five of the 18 BNP standing committee members are in jail. Khaleda's elder son Tarique Rahman
...the elder son of former President of Bangladesh Ziaur Rahman Bir Uttam, and Khaleda Zia, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh. , who is senior vice-chairman of the party, is also a standing committee member as ex officio. He went to London for treatment in 2008, and is living there since.

RA Ghani, 82, and ailing M Shamsul Islam, 81, cannot even take part in the standing committee meetings because of their advanced age.

Most of the other standing committee members that are out are accused in various cases filed over recent violence during opposition hartal and blockade. Of them, Mirza Abbas and Goyeshwar Chandra Roy face charges of instigating arson and vandalism.

A joint team of police, detectives, and immigration police picked up Mir Nasir around 9:00pm when the former Chittagong City Corporation mayor was about to board a flight to Dhaka. They took him to Kotwali Police Station.

Senior police officials preferring anonymity said Nasir was arrested in connection with two cases filed with Kotwali and Chawkbazar cop shoppes for arson and vandalism of two auto-rickshaws at Kazir Dewry and Chatteswary areas on Wednesday.

Meanwhile,
...back at the barn, a little lightbulb figuratively appeared over Bossy's head...
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Zahirul Haque denied the five BNP leaders bail after defence lawyers moved two separate petitions for the five, two weeks after their bail petitions were first rejected by a magistrate.

The three standing committee members of BNP along with BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's Adviser Abdul Awal Mintoo and her Special Assistant Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas are charged with "attempted murder of cops anad creating violence in the capital".

During yesterday's hearing, defence lawyers argued that their clients had been "implicated" in the cases to "politically harass them" and their names were not mentioned in the first information reports (FIRs) of the cases. And so, they should be granted bail.

Cops crowd outside Khaleda's residence
2013-11-10
[Bangla Daily Star] Most of the BNP leaders have gone into hiding after Friday night's arrest of five leaders, while the police have increased their presence around BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia
Three-term PM of Bangla, widow of deceased dictator Ziaur Rahman, head of the Bangla Nationalist Party, an apparent magnet for corruption ...
's residence and office.

Alongside a large number of plainclothes coppers, some female cops were also seen in front of the BNP chief's Gulshan-2 residence yesterday.

Explaining the deployment of additional law enforcers around the opposition leader's house since early Friday, a police official told The Daily Star that this was "for her security".

As of filing this report at 1:00am today, the BNP chairperson did not go out of her house. She usually goes to her Gulshan office in the evening.

None of the top and mid-level leaders were seen at Khaleda's Gulshan office or the party headquarters at Nayapaltan. Their mobile phones were also found switched off.

Talking to The Daily Star, some leaders said they were advised not to visit Khaleda's residence or office for now. Avoiding arrest is part of the party's strategy as the anti-government movement was nearing its peak, they added.

Early Saturday, police jugged
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
the BNP chairperson's adviser Abdul Awal Mintoo and her special assistant Shimul Biswas while the two were coming out of her residence. This followed the arrest of standing committee members Moudud Ahmed, MK Anwar and Rafiqul Islam Miah on Friday night.

Throughout the day, speculations were rife that Khaleda might be under house arrest and she might be arrested soon.

Amid this all, an eight-member delegation of university teachers led by Prof AFM Yusuf Haider, former pro-VC of Dhaka University, met Khaleda Zia at her residence around 9:00pm.

Besides, pro-BNP professionals including lawyers, engineers, doctors and journalists also visited her around 11:30pm.

Emerging from the meeting, Yusuf Haider told news hounds, "We came here to exchange pleasantries and inquire about her [Khaleda] health. We have also talked about the country's political situation and expressed concern
...meaning the brow was mildly wrinkled, the eyebrows drawn slightly together, and a thoughtful expression assumed, not that anything was actually done or indeed that any thought was actually expended...
over the prevailing situation."

Earlier, Kaniz Fatima, wife of Khaleda's younger brother Shamim Iskander, and Ruhul Alam Chowdhury, an adviser to the BNP chief, went there to visit her. Fatima and Ruhul Alam Chowdhury stayed for about an hour.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Alamo, Davy was counting their remaining cannon balls and not liking the results...
police on Friday and Saturday night raided the houses of a number of BNP standing committee members including Mirza Abbas and Goyeshwar Chandra Roy.

Besides, they raided the houses of Chief Whip of the Opposition Zainul Abdin Farroque, Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed and politician Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anne, among others.

Mufti Hannan goes to HC against magistrate's action
2013-03-11
[Bangla Daily Star] Huji leader Mufti Abdul Hannan yesterday challenged at the High Court the legality of a magistrate's action that recorded his confessional statement involving Tarique Rahman in connection with August 21 grenade attack.

The HC bench of Justice Abdul Awal and Justice Md Faruque adjourned the hearing of the petition of Hannan that challenged the legality of the magistrate's action until today.

Hannan also filed a petition with the HC on February 17 for expunging his statement recorded by AHM Habibur Rahman Bhuiyan, the then additional chief metropolitan magistrate, in 2011.

On February 3, Habibur told a Dhaka court that Hannan in his statement mentioned names of some intelligence and political bigwigs, including Khaleda Zia's son Tarique Rahman, as masterminds of the August 21 grenade assault.

Judge Shahed Nuruddin of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 of Dhaka recorded Habibur's statement on that day.

Hannan was in the dock while Habibur, now an additional metropolitan session judge in Dhaka, was giving his testimony on recording the confessional statement the same day.

Hannan's lawyer barrister Fakhrul Islam told The Daily Star yesterday that magistrate Habibur Rahman recorded the confessional statement of Hannan in a murder case filed under the penal code in connection with the grenade attack.

Habibur, however, placed the recorded statement before the Dhaka court on February 3 in connection with a case filed under Explosive Substance Act 1908, which was illegal, he said.

Although the two cases were filed in connection with the same incident, the magistrate cannot place the statement of one case of any accused in another case before a court, he added.
