Schoolgirl gang-raped in Bogra
2020-07-09
[Dhaka Tribune] A fourth-grade schoolgirl has been gang-raped allegedly by a neighbouring youth and his brother in Dhunot upazila of Bogra.

The rape suspects were identified as Fajal Sheikh Babu, 24, and his 16-year-old brother.

Police arrested Fajal's younger brother on Tuesday night after the victim's grandfather filed a rape case against the siblings with Dhunot cop shoppe, said Kripa Sindhubala, officer-in-charge of Dhunot cop shoppe.

The 11-year-old girl is receiving treatment at the One-Stop Crisis Centre of the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, added the OC.

According to the case statement, the girl lived with her grandparents in Rudrabari under Choukibari union as her parents were RMG workers in Dhaka.

On Monday night, the girl’s grandparents left her home alone to go to the union council office to enlist their names on the government aid list.

At that time, neighbours Fajal and his brother went to the girl's house to watch television. Soon after, Fajal and his brother raped the girl in turns and expeditiously departed at a goodly pace as she fell severely ill.

When her grandparents returned, they found the girl unclothed and at death's door.

They rescued her to the Dhunot Upazila Health Complex, where the doctors initially found signs of rape, said Monira Akter, a physician of the hospital. "The girl has been transferred to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital for better treatment."

Dhunot cop shoppe OC Kripa Sindhubala said: "We have made an arrest acting on the rape accusation. The arrestee was produced before a court and he has confessed to his crime. We are trying to arrest his brother. Meanwhile,

BNP announces countrywide demo for Sunday
2019-12-13
[Dhaka Tribune] Expressing its grievances over the Appellate Division order rejecting BNP Chairperson the loathesome Khaleda Zia
...Three-term PM of Bangla, widow of deceased dictator Ziaur Rahman, Pak foil, head of the Bangla Nationalist Party, an apparent magnet for corruption ...
's bail in Zia Charitable Trust graft case, the party has announced a countrywide demonstration program for Sunday demanding her release.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir declared the program at a presser after a meeting of the party Standing Committee members at its chairperson's Gulshan office in Dhaka on Thursday, reports UNB.

"We are aggrieved and disappointed over the court order. The nation is not only got stunned, but also angry over it," he said.

The BNP leader said people had an expectation that Khaleda Zia would get justice from the apex court, but unfortunately she was deprived of that.

Under the circumstances, Fakhrul said: "We have taken a decision at the meeting of our Standing Committee that we will stage demonstrations and take out processions across the country on Sunday, demanding Khaleda Zia's release."

In the capital, he said BNP's all thana units will hold rallies and stage demonstrations the same day to push for the same demand.

He said they will also announce other programs after Sunday to mount pressure on the government to free Khaleda from jail.

Fakhrul said they believe that people will wage a strong movement with their active participation to force the current "usurper" government to hold a fresh election under a neutral government annulling the results of the 11th parliamentary election.

Earlier in the day, the Appellate Division rejected the bail petition of the BNP chief in the graft case.

Khaleda Zia has been in jail since February 8, 2018 after she was sentenced to five years' imprisonment in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

She is currently being treated at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).

Her party has been accusing the government of not providing adequate treatment facilities to Khaleda.

Quader: Zia betrayed Bangabandhu
2019-08-26
[Dhaka Tribune] Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and his family betrayed the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and the country as well.

“We know the assassins of the 1975 carnage. We also know those who patronized the killers and helped them to go abroad: Ziaur Rahman and his family betrayed Bangabandhu and the country,” he said, addressing a discussion in the capital on Sunday.

North South University organized the meeting on its campus, marking the 44th martyrdom anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and National Mourning Day.

Speaking as chief guest, Quader said that after betraying Bangabandhu and the country, Zia himself became a victim of treachery.

Obaidul Quader said if Zia had not patronized the killers of Bangabandhu, another killing would not have taken place in 1981 and he would not have been killed.

Quader, also Awami League General Secretary, said: “Awami League men did not kill Zia. He was killed by his close ones.”

The 15 August carnage and the 21 August killings are interlinked, he said, adding that the Harkat-ul-Jihad leader confessed that as per the instruction of Hawa Bhaban, the outlaw group carried out the grenade attack on an Awami League rally on Bangabandhu Avenue on August 21 in 2004, with a primary target of killing, then opposition leader, Sheikh Hasina.

Former Bangladesh military dictator Ershad beyond all cares and woe at 89
2019-07-15
[DAWN] Former Bangladesh military dictator Hussain Muhammad Ershad died on Sunday aged 89, after weeks in a Dhaka hospital, officials said.

General Ershad ruled Bangladesh for nearly a decade before being ousted from power in a pro-democracy upsurge in 1990 and was tossed in the slammer

for years on corruption charges.

He passed away due to complications from old age, Kazi Firoz Rashid, a longtime colleague and politician from his Jatiya Party

, told AFP. Armed forces front man Abdullah bin Zaid confirmed the death.

Ershad, who was also a prolific poet, was the head of the country's armed forces in 1982 when he took power in a bloodless coup after removing an elected government from power.

His rule was marked by a controversial decision to make Islam the state religion of the officially secular Moslem-majority nation.

In comments made to local news hounds from jail in 1996, he said that his "greatest failure [...] was running the country softly with a heart of a poet".

Despite the slew of cases against him, Ershad emerged as one of Bangladesh's major power brokers in the 1990s after his Jatiya Party became the country's third biggest political outfit.

The murder of history
2019-05-30
[Dhaka Tribune] The rule of General Ziaur Rahman came to a violent end at the Chittagong Circuit House on May 30, 1981.

A decade earlier, Major Zia’s moment of glory came on the evening of March 27, 1971.

In the name of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, he proclaimed to the world that the people of Bangladesh were a free nation, that to dub the majority population of Pakistain as secessionists was "a cruel joke" which ought to "befool none," that indeed the world’s powerful nations should be according recognition to a nation struggling to be born out of calamitous darkness.

's health has massively deteriorated over the last week due to unhealthy environment in the jail.

"Khaleda Zia is trapped between life and death. Keeping Khaleda in jail, depriving her of bail, is contrary to the constitution and human rights
One man's rights are another man's existential threat.
, since her conviction in any of the case had not been finally disposed off by the Supreme Court," said the senior BNP leader.

Speaking at a presser, he also said: "Due to loneliness and lack of proper treatment, she is suffering from various ailments including heart disease."
"We checked. She doesn't have a heart"
BNP standing committee members arranged the presser at its Nayapaltan central office, demanding Khaleda Zia's release from jail, and her proper medical treatment.

She is at serious risk of sudden cardiac arrest, said Sircar, also a former Speaker of parliament.

"The government had assured it would make proper arrangement for Khaleda Zia’s treatment, but not enough initiatives were taken yet," he said.

Jamiruddin added: "It is a bad sign that they are not letting Khaleda Zia out for treatment, even in this worsening condition."

BNP Vice Chairman‐and one of Khaleda's personal physicians‐AZM Zahid Hossain, said: "Khaleda Zia is suffering from high blood sugar, measuring from 14 to 18 mmol/L, and always needs to be on insulin. She has a sore tongue, which is not healing due to the high blood sugar.

"Moreover, her left shoulder, and elbow joint have become insensitive," he added.

Zahid Hossain said: "According to her doctors, Khaleda Zia is a special care patient. It is important to ensure all the facilities needed for her personal care."

AL: BNP, Jamaat, Oikya Front working against army under ISI prescription
2018-12-26
[Dhaka Tribune] BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
, and Jatiya Oikya Front are spreading propaganda against the army based on the "prescription" provided by Pak intelligence agency ISI, Awami League Joint General Secretary Abdur Rahman has claimed.

He made the accusations at a presser held at the party president's Dhanmondi political office in Dhaka on Tuesday afternoon.

"The lies and deception spread by BNP, Jamaat, and Oikya Front have become profound," he said. "But acting on ISI's prescription, they have now targeted their twisted propaganda towards our symbol of pride and esteem‐our army."

Commenting on Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder and Oikya Front leader Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury's remarks against incumbent army Chief of Staff Abdul Aziz on a TV talk show on October 9, Abdur Rahman said: "Everyone saw how Zafrullah made ill-motivated and false statements against the Bangladesh Army, and its chief, to tarnish the army's image.

"Now these parties are opening fake Facebook IDs and websites in the army's name and trying to confuse the public," he said.

Abdur Rahman also said conspiracies against the army are nothing new for BNP-Jamaat. "After ascending to power with a false coup, BNP Founder Ziaur Rahman killed thousands of innocent army officials and freedom fighters through the so-called tribunal."

BNP and Jamaat have always worked to implicate the army in controversies, he said at the presser.

He added: "Yesterday [Monday], Jatiya Oikya Front chief Dr Kamal Hossain mentioned Yahya Khan's‐the man responsible for 1971's genocide‐name at a presser. If Kamal Hossain stands in front of a mirror, he will only see Yahya's reflection."

The joint general secretary accused Dr Kamal Hossain of harbouring anti-liberation war sentiments. "He has started adopting a Pak mentality."

Accusing BNP, Jamaat, and Oikya Front leaders of causing violence and disruption in different parts of the country before the December 30 polls, Abdur said: "BNP, Jamaat, and Oikya Front are using their own people to vandalize the election offices of Awami League and their allied parties, to sabotage their campaign activities."

RAB DG: Crores of taka coming from Dubai to influence election
2018-12-26
[Dhaka Tribune] Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Director General (DG) Benazir Ahmed has said that huge amount of cash is being sent from Dubai to Bangladesh to influence the 11th general election.

His remarks came at a press briefing in Dhaka on Tuesday afternoon, after a drive that ended with the arrest of three men and seizure of Tk8 crore in cash and Tk10 crore in cheque.

He claimed that the trio was involved in "instigating violence by distributing illegal money" ahead of the polls, scheduled to be held across the country on Sunday.

Conducted based on a tip-off, the elite force’s raid had started on Monday afternoon and ended on Tuesday morning ‐ during which Rab swept through the office of export-import and contractor firm United Corporation on the 27th floor of City Centre, situated in the capital’s Motijheel, and Amena Enterprise at Gulshan.

Benazir added that they also recovered a number of vouchers, several types of receipts, slips and cash books which showed where the money went and who received them.

At the press briefing held at United Corporation, he said the documents they have recovered during the raid showed that some Tk150 crore have already been disbursed from that office.

RAB identified the arrestees as Amena Enterprise General Manager JoynalAbedin and office assistant Alamgir Hossain, and Ali Haider, managing director of United Corporation.

One of them also used to work at HawaBhaban, the former political office of BNP Chairperson the loathesome Khaleda Zia

The owner of United Corporation, Mahmudul Hasan, is an expatriate living in Dubai, and BNP’s candidate in Shariatpur 3 constituency Miah Nuruddin Ahmed Apu is the owner of Amena Enterprise.

RAB 3 Operation Officer Additional Superintendent of Police ABM Faizullah also told the Dhaka Tribune on Tuesday evening that a case was filed against the trio ‐ under the Money Laundering Prevention Act and Anti-terrorism Act ‐ at Motijheel cop shoppe.

, is already behind bars after being handed a five-year term in February on separate embezzlement charges.

That verdict triggered festivities between police and thousands of loyalists from the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which Zia still leads from prison.

In her latest trial, Judge Mohammad Akhtaruzzman found the 73-year-old guilty of abuse of power and embezzling 31.5 million taka destined for a charitable fund.

The verdict was handed down in a temporary courtroom inside Dhaka Central Jail where Zia ‐ who has been hospitalised for poor health ‐ is the only inmate.

Her lawyers, who were also absent during the verdict, have consistently described the trial as "political vengeance" by Hasina, who has been accused of stifling her opponents.
