in 12 different May 9 riots' cases registered against them.

The two politicians were granted bail by Judge Malik Ijaz Asif.

Earlier today, the court also granted bail and ordered the release of Awami Mulsim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rashid Ahmed in the same case.

Shiraz Ahmed Ranjha, a PTI lawyer was representing Khan and Qureshi in the court, while the judge rejected the prosecution's request to hold the hearing on another day.

The decision was issued after a hearing in the case was held on February 6. The court had summoned Khan, Qureshi and AML chief to appear earlier this week, the orders for which it gave during a hearing held on February 3.

On December 27, Qureshi was initially arrested in a General Headquarters (GHQ) attack case from Adiala jail, but later he was booked in 12 other cases related to violent mostly peaceful May 9 protests, while Khan was arrested in the GHQ attack case on January 9.

The May 9 riots were triggered almost across the country after the deposed prime minister's arrest in the £190 million settlement case. Hundreds of PTI workers and big shots were put behind bars for their involvement in violence and attacks on military installations.

During the protests, the miscreants targeted the civil and military installations including — Jinnah House and the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi. The military termed May 9 "Black Day" and decided to try the protesters under the Army Act.

The approval of petitions by both politicians comes two days after the country witnessed the conduct of its 10th general elections on February 8.

Resurfacing after a month-long disappearance on October 20, the close aide Khan, however, sought pardon for "commoners" involved in the May 9 incidents.

At the outset of today’s hearing, Rashid appeared before the court accompanied by his lawyer Sardar Abdul Razzaq Khan. During the court of proceedings, Rashid’s counsel argued that his client had nothing to do with the events of May 9, adding that there was no evidence showing his client’s involvement in the violent mostly peaceful protests.

At this, the court approved his interim bail and ordered him to submit surety bonds worth Rs50,000.

, was arrested in Rawalpindi on Sunday, his counsel Sardar Abdul Razaq claimed.

"Rashid was taken into custody by men in plain clothes from a housing society in Rawalpindi," the lawyer added.

While sharing the details, the lawyer said that Rashid was taken into custody from a rented house in the housing society.

"His [Rashid] nephew was also arrested," he added.

No case was registered against the AML chief in the limits of Punjab, his counsel also claimed, adding that Rashid was nominated in a case lodged at Kohsar cop shoppe in connection with a protest rally held on May 10 by the PTI against the detention of Imran Khan — the former prime minister.

"We do not know the whereabouts of Rashid so far. Efforts are being made to trace him," his lawyer went on to say.

’PUNJAB POLICE ARREST RASHID’
In a video statement shared on the official X handle — formerly known as Twitter — of Sheikh Rashid, his nephew and former MNA Sheikh Rashid Shafique confirmed that the AML chief along with his brother, Sheikh Shakir, and a domestic help were taken into custody after Maghrib prayer by officials of Punjab

police and plain-clothes men.

In their written statements in Lahore and Islamabad high courts, the police had already admitted that Sheikh Rashid was not wanted by them in any case, Shafique added.

"Sheikh Rashid condemned the May 9 incidents from day one and I did so," he added.

After being arrested, the trio were shifted to an undisclosed location, the nephew said, adding, "We do not know the whereabouts of Rashid, my brother and the domestic help"

He urged the Supreme Court and high courts to inform them whereabouts of Rashid and his brother so that they could provide them the legal assistance.

The AML chief's nephew further said that they did not know in which case Rashid and his brother were taken into custody.

Shafique also urged the authorities that the trio should be produced before the court. He vowed to fight the legal battle for their right.

NAB summons Sheikh Rashid in 190 million settlement case
2023-05-30
[GEO.TV] The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Monday summoned former federal minister and Awami Moslem League (AML) chief Sheikh Rashid Ahmed in the al-Qadir Trust case related to the settlement of 190 million pounds.

Rashid, who is a close confidant of Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf

, has been directed to appear before the anti-corruption watchdog in person tomorrow (Tuesday) at 11am.

As per the NAB notice, the former federal minister was also asked to bring along all documents related to the case.

Khan — along with his wife Bushra Bibi and other PTI leaders — is facing a NAB inquiry related to a settlement between the PTI government and a property tycoon, which reportedly caused a loss of £190 million to the national exchequer.

As per the charges, the former prime minister and other accused allegedly adjusted Rs50 billion — £190 million at the time — sent by Britannia’s National Crime Agency (NCA) to the Pak government as part of the agreement with the property tycoon.

They are also accused of getting undue benefit in the form of over 458 kanals of land at Mouza Bakrala, Sohawa, to establish al-Qadir University.

During the PTI government, the NCA seized assets worth 190 million pounds from the property tycoon in Britannia.

The agency said the assets would be passed to the government of Pakistain and the settlement with the Pak property tycoon was "a civil matter, and does not represent a finding of guilt".

This is related to Imran Khan supporters inciting violence. Twitter is full of reports of his party's people being arrested all over Pakistan

Update at 8:45 a.m.: Dawn has the most recent announcements by province here, including that there is a list of 400 more to be arrested if necessary.

Pakistan’s police suddenly arrest dozens of supporters of ex-PM Khan
There was nothing in Dawn last night on this story, despite a flurry of tweets coming out of the country, so I held the Ay Pee article — which was all I could find — until this morning, when I awoke to find Dawn flooded with articles. Here is a selection, in reverse chronological order.

Khan took to Twitter, condemning the arrests of his supporters.

No government official was immediately available for comment.

The development came two days after Khan urged his supporters to gather in Islamabad on Wednesday for a demonstration that he said would continuuntil the government announced a date for snap elections.

, in which he pilloried the government and described its recent moves as "akin to what dictators do".

His speech came a day after a police crackdown on his party workers, in which a number of workers were allegedly rounded up. A policeman was also martyred the same night in an operation in Lahore. The government and the PTI blame each other for the killing.

conducted late-night raids on the homes of several party leaders, drawing condemnations from politicians and journalists alike.

In videos being circulated on social media, coppers could be seen purportedly raiding the houses of Punjab-based PTI leaders including Hammad Azhar, Usman Dar, Fayyazul Hasan Chohan, Malik Waqar Ahmed, Engineer Kashif Kharal, Mazhar Iqbal Gujjar and others.

PTI Chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan, in a tweet early on Tuesday morning, called the "brutal" crackdown the "fascist
...anybody you disagree with, damn them...
nature of PML-N when in power". Peaceful protest was the right of the citizens, he said, adding that the crackdown raised serious questions about the "handlers".

The former premier recalled that during his tenure PPP, PML-N and JUI-F's anti-government marches were never stopped nor did the PTI government carry out any crackdown on their workers.

PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry claimed that the Punjab police raided nearly 1,100 houses last night, while over 400 PTI leaders, both men and women, had been arrested.

In a video message, former Sindh governor Imran Ismail claimed that PTI workers in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
were "harassed" and taken into custody as well.

Columnist Huma Yusuf posted a video of retired Justice Nasira Iqbal, mother of PTI senator Walid Iqbal, who was woken up at 2am after the Punjab police "roughed up the night staff and left".

Barrister Asad Rahim Khan, meanwhile, noted that raiding Hammad Azhar's house without a single charge two days after former human rights

minister Shireen Mazari's arrest showed the "lawless, countrywide sweep against innocent political opponents".

Govt, PTI trade blame after policeman gunned down during raid in Lahore last night
Note that originally — at the bottom of the article — there was the promise to allow the march, then suddenly the decision was made to arrest everyone.
[Dawn] Federal ministers and PTI leaders blamed each other on Tuesday in the aftermath of the killing of a policeman who was shot full of holes during a raid in Lahore against people "taking the law into their own hands" last night.

Kamal Ahmad, a police constable, was killed during an operation in Lahore's Model Town locality last night after an unidentified person opened fire on him, Lahore DIG Operations Sohail Chaudhry told news hounds outside a hospital.

The raid coincided with the post-midnight police crackdown on PTI leaders' residences, ahead of the party's planned long march to Islamabad on May 25 (tomorrow).

DIG Chaudhry, without naming any political party, said the police was cracking down on activists who were "taking the law into their own hands and doing hooliganism".

When the police party reached the home of an activist — Sajid Hussain, against whom the police filed an FIR afterwards — an unidentified person opened fire from its rooftop, the DIG said.

"A bullet hit the upper part of the constable's chest, which is a very critical area. A lot of effort was made [to save him] but when we reached here (the hospital), he had become frail."

The policeman later succumbed to his wounds, DIG Chaudhry said. He vowed that the person responsible for the firing would not be able to escape and raids were being conducted to arrest him.

FIR FILED
A first information report (FIR) filed later notably does not mention the police operation was linked to the raids on PTI leaders, but does identify the alleged shooter.

The FIR stated that a police party, during a search operation in Model Town, rang the doorbell of Hussain's house at 1:40am. Shortly afterwards, two "armed people", identified as Sajid Hussain and Akrama Bukhari, appeared on the terrace and Hussain asked in a "threatening tone" why they (police) had come to his house late at night, it said.

The police party responded that they were conducting a search operation regarding tenancy, according to the FIR. However Hussain and his son became angry and started "threatening the officials with dire consequences".

"Hussain asked his son Bukhari to fire straight at the police party. Bukhari, with the intention of killing, fired straight at the police party. A bullet struck the chest of Constable Kamal Ahmad, who was standing outside the house."

Hussain also fired at the police party and a bullet hit the government vehicle, the FIR stated. The constable went titzup, it added.

The FIR was registered under Sections 302 (murder), 34 (common intention), 324 (attempt to murder), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 427 (causing damage) of the Pakistain Penal Code, and Section 7 of Anti-Terrorism Act.

Both Hussain and his son Bukhari were arrested later, police said.

There were reports of late-night police action at the homes of former federal minister Hammad Azhar in Lahore, while the Lal Haveli residence of Sheikh Rashid Ahmed as well as the homes of Fayyazul Hasan Chohan and Ijaz Khan Jazi in Rawalpindi were also purportedly raided.

In addition, former information minister Fawad Chaudhry also claimed in a tweet that his home in Islamabad was under observation, which was why he had left for Jhelum.

Videos circulating on social media purportedly showed police raiding the homes of other Punjab-based PTI leaders, including Usman Dar, Malik Waqar Ahmed, Engineer Kashif Kharal, Mazhar Iqbal Gujjar and others.

GOVT, PTI TRADE BLAME
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah termed the policeman's killing "proof that [former prime minister and PTI Chairman] Imran Khan is a terrorist".

"Kamal Ahmad's killers are Imran Khan, Sheikh Rashid and their followers," he claimed and vowed to hold the planners of the "khooni (bloody) march" accountable.

The interior minister also claimed that Imran wanted to start a civil war in the country in the guise of the long march.

"We will prevent civil war, chaos and disorder in the country through the law," he stressed.

Meanwhile,
...back at the revival hall, the SWAT team had finally arrived...
former information minister and PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry claimed that police officials had "misbehaved" with women and kiddies and "tortured" people. Over 450 workers, including women, were taken into custody, he claimed.

"Ex-servicemen and people who are retired from civil institutions were also targeted. According to the reports, the family of a retired major shot up forced entry into their home after midnight believing they were robbers."

As a result, the policeman lost his life, he added and claimed that Sanaullah and Hamza were responsible for the incident.

Fawad said the police had conducted raids on 1,100 homes last night and entered people's houses without any warrants.

SECTION 144 IMPOSED IN PUNJAB
Later in the day, PML-N Deputy Secretary General Attaullah Tarar told a presser in Lahore that Section 144 was being imposed in the province, adding that the government had taken the decision after consulting with its allies.

He came down hard on the PTI, saying that they wanted to disrupt peace and spread anarchy in the province. "What was Constable Kamal Ahmad's fault? [...] What answer will you give to the five children he has left behind? Have you lost all of your humanity?" he asked.

The PML-N leader maintained that the official was merely performing his duty when PTI workers opened fire on him from the roof. He also called out the PTI chairman for "hiding" in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and alleged that he had directed party workers to collect weapons in an effort to disrupt peace in the province.

LATE-NIGHT CRACKDOWN
The opposition party's fears were realised late on Monday night, when despite assurances that their leaders will not be targeted or arrested ahead of the planned march on the capital, police raided the residences of several key PTI figures.

PTI chairman Imran had, on Sunday, announced the PTI's plans to hold an 'Azadi March' on Islamabad on May 25 (tomorrow), reportedly after talks with the establishment over early polls fell flat.

The police action was in stark contrast to the resolve expressed by PM Shehbaz’s spokesperson, who had claimed earlier in the day it had been decided not to arrest any PTI worker ahead of the long march.

Even Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal had made the same commitment when he said that the "coalition government believes in democracy and respects the right to protest". He claimed that as long as whatever Imran Khan does is within the boundaries of the law and Constitution, it would be accepted while the government will deal with protesters if there is any violation.

However,
Caliphornia hasn't yet slid into the ocean, no matter how hard it's tried...
Hammad Azhar tweeted just before midnight that police had raided his house to arrest him, but that he managed to evade capture. Talking to news hounds, his mother claimed that a heavy police contingent had first knocked at their door before entering to search for her son.

After the incident, former Punjab health minister Yasmeen Rashid reached Azhar's residence and started a sit-in to protest the police action. Footage circulating on social media showed the former Punjab health minister, a cancer survivor, seated on the pavement as police vehicles were visible in the background.

‘Terror outfits’ regrouping in Balochistan, NA told
2022-03-30
[Dawn] The interior ministry on Monday confirmed that anti-Pakistain terror outfits are regrouping in Balochistan

via the Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchestan.

This was revealed in a written reply submitted to the National Assembly during the question hour in response to a query posed by PPP MNA Dr Shazia Sobia Aslam Soomro. She asked if it was true that "anti-Pakistain terror outfits are regrouping in Balochistan via Sistan, and if yes, details thereof along with action plan thereof, if any".

In its response, the interior ministry stated: "Yes, anti-Pakistain terror outfits are regrouping in Balochistan via Sistan."

The response, attributed to Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, also mentioned the measures being taken by the government to mitigate this trend.

According to the response placed before the National Assembly on Monday, the National Intelligence Coordination Committee (NICC) has been institutionalised to integrate all federal and provincial intelligence grids for effective and timely countermeasures. Effective border management and fencing along the western border would also stem this tide, the response added.

"Persistent intelligence-based operations are being undertaken to neutralise terror organizations," the response stated, adding that operational capabilities of the counterterrorism apparatus were being enhanced.

The response also recalled recent government initiatives to engage disgruntle Baloch rustics for reconciliation, including special socio-economic development packages for mitigating murderous Moslem threats in Balochistan and KP, and addressing the most marginalised segment of society through the "Ehsaas Programme" along with engaging the youth in constructive activities.

Cold Kills 22 Stuck in Cars in Heavy Snow at Pakistan Resort
2022-01-08
[US News] ISLAMABAD (AP) — At least 22 people, including 10 children, died in a popular mountain resort town in Pakistan after being stuck in their vehicles overnight during a heavy snowstorm as temperatures plummeted, officials said Saturday.

Most of the victims died of hypothermia, officials said. Among them was an Islamabad police officer and seven other members of his family, fellow police officer Atiq Ahmed said.

More than 4 feet (1 meter) of snow fell in the area of the Murree Hills resort overnight Friday and early Saturday, trapping thousands of cars on roadways, said Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed. The snow was so severe that heavy equipment brought in to clear it initially got stuck during the night, said Umar Maqbool, assistant commissioner for the town of Murree. Temperatures fell to minus 8 degrees Celsius (17.6 degrees Fahrenheit).

Officials called in paramilitary troops and a special military mountain unit to help. By late Saturday, thousands of vehicles had been pulled from the snow but more than a thousand were still stuck, Ahmed said.

Government yields to TLP, frees 350 activists
2021-10-25
[DAWN] In what appears to be another total surrender before the violent mostly peaceful protesters marching towards the capital via G.T. Road, the federal government on Sunday released more than 350 activists of the banned Tehrik-e-Labbaik Pakistain (TLP), besides announcing that the cases against others would be withdrawn by Wednesday (Oct 27).The government also assured the TLP leaders of reviewing the Fourth Schedule list containing their names and working on a plan to release their locked away

chief Saad Rizvi, announced Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed while speaking at a news conference.

The interior minister, who addressed the presser after leading a government team in negotiations with representatives of the TLP, including its detained chief, in Islamabad, later tweeted: "We have released 350 TLP workers up to now and we are still waiting to open both sides of road of Muridke as per the decision with the TLP."

Another round of talks with the TLP will be held at the Ministry of Interior in Islamabad on Monday morning (today), according to Mr Rashid who said the protesters had agreed not to march towards the capital and stay at Muridke, some 33 kilometres from Lahore, till Wednesday.

However,

"Perhaps the people will say that the state has surrendered. But it is not the job of the state to use the stick (force)," the minister said, explaining the duty of the state was to find a path of reconciliation. "This is my viewpoint as the interior minister," he quickly added.

A member of the TLP Shura said they had agreed to the government’s proposal to stay and wait at Muridke for two days, because the government had assured them that it would release all those arrested, including the TLP chief and other Shura members, and would review the Fourth Schedule.

He further claimed that the government had promised that it would act on the agreement signed with the group in November 2020.

According to the TLP Shura member, their leadership and workers after being released would join the marchers at Muridke and announce their next plan, possibly the termination of the long march.

Pakistan radical party suspends march following agreement with govt
2021-10-25
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A radical party agreed on Sunday to suspend for three days its march of thousands toward the capital Islamabad after Pakistain agreed to drop pending charges against the party’s leader.

Party supporters on Saturday departed the eastern city of Lahore, clashing for a second straight day with police who lobbed tear gas into the crowd.

The group began its journey a day earlier with the goal of reaching Islamabad to pressure the government to release Saad Rizvi, head of the Islamist Tehrik-e-Labiak Pakistain party. Rizvi was arrested last year amid demonstrations against La Belle France over the publication of caricatures of Prophet Muhammad.

Raja Basharat, provincial law minister, told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named that under the agreement Punjab

will withdraw charges against Rizvi and release all those detained during the protest march by Tuesday.

Rizvi were tossed into the calaboose pre-emptively on a charge of inciting people to assemble unlawfully. It was unclear when he would be released.

Basharat also said the agreement stipulates that the federal government will honor a previous agreement with the TLP to address diplomatic ties with La Belle France over the publication of the caricatures.

Sajid Saifi, front man for Rizvi’s party, confirmed the minister’s account and said thousands of party supporters will stay in the town of Mureedke waiting for the release of party leaders and members who have been detained.

Pakistain Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed told news hounds that the TLP’s demand that the French ambassador to Pakistain be expelled over the caricatures would be taken to a parliamentary committee in the coming days.

Basharat, Ahmed and Religious Affairs Minister Noorul Haq Qadri took part in the talks with the TLP executive council.

Violent festivities erupted between security forces and the Islamists in Lahore killing at least two police and injuring about a dozen, police said. Saifi claimed four party supporters were killed by police fire and "many" others were maimed. Police said the demonstrators torched several police vehicles there.

control in the last 24 hours; however, Afghan forces also made advances in Kunduz and Takhar, officials and other sources said.

The centers of Khwaja Omari, Muqor and Waghaz districts in Ghazni and Khoshamand district in Paktika
...which coincidentally borders South Wazoo...
fell to the Taliban in the last 24 hours, according to sources.

"From 18 districts in Ghazni, I think seven districts have fallen to the Taliban. In three districts, only the center is under government control and three are somehow good," said Khoddad Irfani, an MP from Ghazni.

"Some bases and districts have already fallen (to the Taliban). Two more districts fell to the holy warriors in the last 24 hours," said Hamidullah Noori, member of the Ghazni provincial council.

After two weeks of festivities in different parts of Kunduz, particularly on the outskirts of Kunduz city, some stability has been restored since Sunday night.

"The situation in the city is good, it is improving. All shops have been reopened," Kunduz resident said.

"Security should be ensured. How long should this war continue? We are not calm during the day and night," said a Kunduz resident.

The security forces said they will continue their efforts to strengthen their posts on the outskirts of Kunduz city.

"All the security forces who have come to the center of Kunduz from other districts have been deployed to different parts of the city," said Shah Mahmood Fazli, acting commander of the first regiment of 217 Pamir Corps.

Amid fierce battles in the last two months, Pakistain's interior minister, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, during an interview with Geo News said that families of Afghan Taliban reside in his country, including in the capital city of Islamabad.

He also said the Taliban receive medical treatment in Pak hospitals.

"Taliban families live here--in Pakistain, in Rawat, Loi Ber, Bara Kahuh and Tarnol," Rashid told the Urdu-language network citing the names of Islamabad suburbs.

"Sometimes their dead bodies arrive and sometimes they come here in hospitals to get medical treatment," he said.

Afghans responded to the remarks by the Pak minister, including National Security Adviser Hamdullah Mohib, who welcomed the disclosure. However,
those who apply themselves too closely to little things often become incapable of great things...
the Taliban rejected the remarks by the Pak minister and said their leaders and their families are living in Afghanistan.
