Israel intends to assassinate Palestinian officials in Lebanon
2023-12-24
[An Nahar] Lebanon has been warned that the Israeli Mossad intends to assassinate Palestinian officials in Lebanon, topped by Hamas senior leaders Saleh al-Arouri and Osama Hamdan and Islamic Jihad chief Ziad al-Nakhalah, diplomatic sources said.

“The threats are high and require extraordinary measures,” the sources told ad-Diyar newspaper in remarks published Friday, saying that French intelligence chief Bernard Emie had warned -- without mentioning names -- of such a scenario during his latest visit to Beirut.

“French President Emmanuel Macron relieved Emie of his duties and replaced him with Nicolas Lerner hours ago, which is a suspicious timing that indicates that Emie might have paid the price of these leaks,” ad-Diyar added.

UNRWA Head Alarmed by Incidents at Two Lebanon Palestinian Camps
2021-09-22
[AnNahar] Phillipe Lazzarini, the head of the U.N. Paleostinian refugee agency UNRWA, has said that he is "very alarmed" by two "major" security developments that happened at two Paleostinian refugees camps in Leb
...an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozeen flavors of Christians. It is the home of Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers, a practice dating back to the heady human sacrifice days of Baal Moloch. In 2020 Hezbollahblew up a considerable portion of Beirut and many of its inhabitants when its ammonium nitrate faci8lity exploded. They blamed it on... somebody else. It wasn't them though. Trust them on that...
over the weekend.

On the morning of September 19, protesters from the temporary housing units near the Nahr al-Bared refugee camp broke into the UNRWA construction site office, causing severe damage to the premises and to seven Agency vehicles. No one was injured.

"This incident came in the aftermath of a series of thefts in our installations in the camp over the last few weeks. Paleostinian faction leaders condemned the incident and the thefts and pledged their support to ensure these incidents would not occur again," Lazzarini said in a statement.

On the same day, in the Ain al-Hilweh camp, in the south of Lebanon, fighting between the Fatah and Jund al-Sham armed factions erupted, and fighters "entered four UNRWA schools," Lazzarini added.

Seven people were maimed because of the fighting there, including two civilians in Sidon. Lazzarini said Paleostinian faction leaders have condemned the incident and have committed to investigate it.

"I strongly condemn these incidents, which severely undermine the neutrality and inviolability of our premises and put at serious risk the protection and security of Paleostine refugees, UNRWA personnel and property. UNRWA is requesting that all parties commit to respect the Agency’s neutrality and the inviolability of its installations at all times and to take all measures necessary to ensure that incidents to the contrary are not repeated," he added.

Lazzarini also said that he continues to be "extremely concerned" about the deteriorating situation in Lebanon as a whole and its "significant impact on Paleostine refugees who were already among the most vulnerable communities."

"UNRWA is a front-row witness to the immense needs and the high level of poverty among Paleostine refugees in Lebanon. The Agency is sparing no effort to advocate for additional support to the Paleostine refugee community in Lebanon," he said.

"In order to continue to deliver critical services, UNRWA needs both additional financial support and full respect for the safety of its personnel as well as for the inviolability of its installations at all times," he added.

Palestinians Warned that IS, Nusra May be Plotting to Take Over Ain el-Hilweh
2016-07-15
[AnNahar] Paleostinian factions and the residents of the Ein el-Hellhole Paleostinian refugee camp have reportedly received warnings from Lebanese sides that some gunnies are seeking to enable jihadist groups to seize control of the camp, which is the largest in Leb.

"There are terrorist preparations to overrun some areas in the Ein el-Hellhole camp and the pro-Islamic State

groups are being led by Imad Yassine while the pro-Nusra Front groups are being led by Haitham al-Shaabi, al-Joumhouria newspaper reported on Thursday.

It quoted security sources as saying that the Paleostinian factions and residents have been cautioned that "the snuffies are trying to turn the camp into a time bomb that might explode any moment."

"Should the situation deteriorate and explode, it will lead to severe repercussions for the camp's residents, who will be the first casualty of the plots of these groups," the sources warned, calling on Paleostinians to "protect the camp and expel the malicious terrorist elements from it."

The sources also called for "avoiding another Nahr al-Bared experience," referring to the devastating 2007 conflict between the Lebanese army and the Death Eater Fatah al-Islam

group, which razed the Nahr al-Bared refugee camp to the ground.

"The factions and the residents must prevent these groups from achieving the objective of turning the camp into an emirate for them and a launching pad for creating conflict between the camp and its neighbors," the sources added.

The sources, however, reassured that "the army is thoroughly monitoring what is happening in the Ein el-Hellhole camp and is still counting on the rational parties to defuse the unrest plots and eliminate its reasons through a series of measures."

"The army will not allow terrorism to find a safe haven in the camp or in any area in Leb," the sources stressed.

"It is totally unacceptable to turn the Ein el-Hellhole camp into a hub for terrorism that might spread to blow up entire Leb and any attempt will be confronted with all due force and resolve," they added.

Report: Islamist Inmates Reject to be Swapped with Arsal Hostages
2014-09-12
[AnNahar] Islamist gunnies held at Roumieh prison, whose names were mentioned by Islamist gunnies to be released from the facility, reject to be exchanged with the kidnapped Lebanese soldiers and coppers.

Sources told al-Akhbar newspaper, published on Thursday, that Syrian prisoners "expressed surprise that their names were on Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original...
's (ISIL) list of demands."

The newspaper said that the inmates reportedly disagree with the mentality of the group.

The sources told the daily that five inmates so far reject to be swapped with the remaining Arsal hostages, fearing that they might be forced to head to the Syrian al-Qalamoun.

Jihadists who are holding several Lebanese soldiers and coppers hostage after withdrawing from the northeastern border town of Arsal have called on the Lebanese government to release Islamist inmates from the country's largest prison in Roumieh in exchange for the captive security personnel.

The jihadists beheaded two of their captives and have threatened to kill more.

The cabinet has totally rejected such a measure as the March 14 camp's ministers have called for the speedy trial of the Islamists.

There are hundreds of Islamist inmates in Roumieh prison awaiting their trials. They were reportedly involved in terrorist acts, including planning suicide kabooms, belonging to terrorist groups and other charges.

Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, ISIS and Hezbollah
2014-08-09
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The additional $1 billion which Soddy Arabia

The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
offered to the Lebanese army this week is not a gift but a political act that comes within the remit of curbing the current strife in Leb and its surroundings.

Saudi Arabia could have offered this financial aid to build up a Lebanese Sunni militia and would have had many reasons for doing so, from fighting the Sunni Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) to deterring the Shiite Hezbollah and Bashir al-Assad's intelligence forces.

Instead, Saudi Arabia chose to support the army in Leb - a country full of Christian, Druze and Shiite militias. So why does Saudi Arabia support the army and not Ahmad al-Assir, Khaled al-Daher or Adnan Imama and other Sunnis looking for a funder? It's not in Saudi Arabia's interest for Leb to turn into an arena for sectarian militias fighting each other on behalf of the region's countries. It's also not in the interest of Leb's Sunnis and Shiites to support taking up arms and rebelling against the state. Despite liquidations and political mobilization, Lebanese public opinion remains mostly against resorting to arms, particularly following the destructive civil war that erupted in the 1970s. Therefore, the choice was made to support the Lebanese state and arm its military institution so the army can carry out its duties of protecting the Sunnis and the rest of the country's factions. Let us recall that although Hezbollah has better arms and has had a fighting force for more than 30 years, it has failed to gain legitimacy despite its claim that it's a resistance group and the guardian of Leb's borders.

Strengthening the Lebanese army means weakening Hezbollah's scheme to dominate Leb

It's expected that supporting the army and strengthening it will anger groups such as Hezbollah. Hezbollah prefers the creation of Sunni militias so it can justify its existence as an armed Shiite militia. It prefers this scenario over strengthening the Lebanese army — something that can legitimately and militarily threaten it raison d'etre.

Standing against militias

Saudi Arabia has taken a decision against supporting the concept of militias, whether Sunni or Shiite, in Leb and other countries. It considers strengthening the state to be the correct option, not just for the Lebanese people, but for all the region's countries which are concerned with establishing security. To respond to Saudi Arabia's decision not to stand against legitimacy, Assad and the Iranian regime have since the 1980s invented religious Sunni leaders that compete with the civil Sunni leadership in order to hijack authority from leaders such as Karami, Solh and Hariri. Even Leb's Sunni mufti, Mohammad Rashid Qabbani is rejected by Leb's Sunnis because they consider him as an employee of the Assad regime! The Lebanese situation is similar to the Paleostinian one as Fatah al-Islam
A Syrian-incubated al-Qaeda work-alike that they think can be turned off if no longer needed to keep the Lebanon pot stirred.
, Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, and the Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
are linked to the Iranian and Syrian regimes.

Strengthening the Lebanese army means weakening Hezbollah's scheme to dominate Leb and turn it into an Iranian emirate. It will enable the Lebanese to confront Sunni terrorist organizations which came running behind Hezbollah from Syria into Leb in this cat and mouse chase. The events in Arsal have proven the importance of having a strong army that stops the meddling of Hezbollah which sought to clash with Syrian groups under the Lebanese army's flag. Military challenges at state level, from the events in Nahr al-Bared refugee camp to the recent events in Arsal, have proven that it's not possible to trust Hezbollah and that the Lebanese people will not accept that any party besides the army defends their security.

However,
some men learn by reading. A few learn by observation. The rest have to pee on the electric fence for themselves...
strengthening the Lebanese army does not promise salvation from Hezbollah and other militias as this aim is impossible to achieve in the near future. The aim is to halt Hezbollah's progress towards its goal of playing the role of the Syrian army, which was expelled from Leb after a UNSC decision following Syria's involvement in the liquidation of Hariri nine years ago. A strong Lebanese army will either weaken the militia's justification that they should have a presence in the country or restrict their activity. In this case, Hezbollah will become a Shiite problem, and resolving it will be left to Leb's Shiites.

Jihadist 'Caliph' Vows to Free Roumieh 'Captives,' Attack Judges
2014-07-09
[AnNahar] Self-proclaimed caliph Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has vowed to release Mohammedan "hostages" from jails in Arab countries, including Leb, and promised to "liquidate their butchers."

According to a video posted on YouTube on Sunday, the shadowy jihadist said the "butchers" include judges, security forces and guards.

Al-Baghdadi heads the Islamic State (IS) group, which led a lighting offensive in Iraq that has overrun swathes of five provinces north and west of Baghdad.

A text appeared in the video, accusing the Lebanese state of being a U.S. and Israeli ally.

It also showed Mohammed Zwawi, a Paleostinian-Syrian, who claimed that he is an inmate in Roumieh, Leb's largest prison.

The video was allegedly shot at Roumieh's bloc B.

Abou Malek al-Shami described the inmates as "Mohammedan captives and jihadist brethren."

The threats come amid strong measures taken by security forces and the army around Roumieh over an alleged plot to carry out a truck bombing and a plan by prisoners to escape from the facility.

Report: Roumieh Prisoners Running Terrorist Cells
2014-07-04
[AnNahar] Security forces and the army have taken strong measures around the country's largest prison over terrorist networks run by inmates and a plan to escape from the facility, al-Akhbar newspaper reported on Thursday.

The daily quoted security officials as saying that the ISF temporarily prevented the passage of vehicles on the road leading to Roumieh prison after suspects told Sherlocks that bully boyz were plotting an attack using a bomb-laden truck and inmates were planning a massive escape.

The ISF cited "security reasons" for the heavy measures, which went into effect on Tuesday night, but the officials said police had information that two of the prison's Islamist inmates were managing cells outside the facility.

"A terrorist network that has been recently busted is directly linked to the two prisoners," they told al-Akhbar.

[An Nahar] Military Tribunal Judge Imad al-Zein demanded on Tuesday the death penalty for a Paleostinian national for belonging to a "terrorist group," the state-run National News Agency reported.

According to NNA, al-Zein demanded the death penalty for the suspect, who was identified by his initials B. H., for belonging to Fatah al-Islam

and monitoring the movement of Fatah Movement official Talal al-Balaghi to assassinate him.

Balaghi is also known as Talal al-Ordoni.

The judge also issued an arrest warrant against him and referred him to the permanent military court.

Other investigation and research warrants were issued against seven suspects, who weren't identified.

The Nahr al-Bared Paleostinian refugee camp in northern Leb was almost totally destroyed in 2007 during a months-long conflict between the Lebanese army and the al-Qaeda-inspired Fatah al-Islam.

The fighting killed some 400 people, including 168 soldiers.

Later, Government commissioner to the military court Judge Saq Saqr charged a detained Syrian and four other runaways with belonging to Ziad al Jarrah Battalion.

The five men were charged with attempts to carry out terrorist acts, establish a factory to develop arms and explosives.

Suleiman Urges Arabs to Share Number of Syrian Refugees, Support Lebanon's Neutrality
2014-03-26
A futile request if ever there was one.
[AnNahar] President Michel Suleiman
...before assuming office as President, he held the position of commander of the Leb Armed Forces. That was after the previous commander, the loathesome Emile Lahoud, took office as president in November of 1998. Likely the next president of Leb will be whoever's commander of the armed forces, too...
demanded Arab nations on Tuesday to share the burden of hosting Syrian refugees, urging also encouraging factions to neutralize the country from the ongoing turmoil in Syria.

"We urge convincing the largest number of Arab countries to share the burden and the number of Syrian refugees," Suleiman said in a speech he gave at the Arab Summit in the Kuwaiti capital.

Suleiman emphasized on the necessity of hosting refugees in safe regions inside Syria, stressing that Leb cannot bear the refugees' crisis on its territories.

"The long-term negative consequences on Leb's economy require many years of care and follow-up," he noted.

The influx of nearly one million Syrian refugees, according to U.N. figures, has swollen Leb's population by 25 percent since the war broke out across the border in March 2011.

The United Nations
...aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society...
forecasts that registered refugees in Leb could reach 1.5 million by the end of the year.

The president also called on Arab nations to continue supporting Leb in all fields, particularly urging them to "encourage the different factions to commit to neutralizing Leb, control the border with Syria, and draw an end to Israeli violations."

"Amid the current challenges, an international support committee was formed to help Leb and we have reached several conclusions that enable us to face the refugees' crisis," Suleiman said.

He continued: "The committee also called for disassociating Leb from regional turmoil and implementing the Baabda Declaration."

"We also agreed on new policies to support the army and we welcome the exceptional Saudi donation to the military institution."

Suleiman described the situation in Syria as the "worst misery since World War II."

"Leb is concerned with the developments in Syria and we are keen on supporting dialogue and communication to reach a political solution in the country," he said.

"We want a solution that ends the worst misery since WWII, that helps in releasing the kidnapped, on top of them the two kidnapped bishops, and a solution that preserves the rights of all Syrians without any foreign meddling," he added.

Suleiman also demanded increasing the financial support given to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), to strengthen its support to the Paleostinian refugees in the country.

"We also call for financial aid to continue rebuilding the (northern) Nahr al-Bared refugee camp," he said.

Separately, Suleiman pledged "to work on holding the presidential elections according to Leb's democratic traditions."
