33 killed, dozens injured in terrorist attacks across Iraq
2014-04-22
[Iran Press TV] At least 33 people, including security forces, have been killed and dozens more injured in separate terrorist attacks across Iraq, security and medical officials say.

Monday's deadliest attack took place in the town of Suwayrah, south of south of the capital Storied Baghdad, where a bomber rammed a boom-mobile into a police checkpoint, killing 12 people -- five coppers and seven civilians, The News Agency that Dare Not be Named reported.

At least 19 people were maimed in the attack.

Another boom-mobile kaboom hit an army checkpoint in the nearby town of Madain, about 20 kilometers (14 miles) southeast of Storied Baghdad, leaving three soldiers and two civilians dead. Twelve other people were maimed in the attack.

An Iraqi soldier was killed and three were maimed when a roadside kaboom struck their patrol in the northern town of Mishahda, 30 kilometers (20 miles) north of Storied Baghdad.

Elsewhere, gunnies rubbed out one civilian and injured two others in Latifiyah, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) south of Storied Baghdad.

Monday evening, four more bombs struck various parts of Storied Baghdad, killing at least 14 people and wounding 40.

The deadly assaults occurred a day after 18 people were killed and nearly 50 injured in violence across Iraq.

Iraq Attacks Kill 10 with Elections due in Weeks
2014-04-07
[AnNahar] Attacks killed 10 people in Iraq on Sunday while six gunnies also died as the country grapples with its worst bloodshed in years just weeks before parliamentary elections.

Among those killed were six who died in a mass liquidation south of Storied Baghdad, in scenes reminiscent of the worst of Iraq's 2006-07 sectarian conflict in which tens of thousands were killed.

The surge in violence has left more than 2,400 people dead so far this year.

It is principally driven by anger in the Sunni Arab minority over alleged mistreatment at the hands of the Shiite-led authorities, as well as spillover from the war in neighboring Syria.

The deadliest of the bloodshed on Sunday struck in Latifiyah, south of Storied Baghdad within the confessionally mixed Triangle of Death, so called because of the brutal violence which plagued the area during the peak of Iraq's confessional war.

Six Sunni Arabs were killed by myrmidons, security and medical officials said, but accounts differed as to how they died.

Two officials reported a family of six were stabbed to death, while others said six Sunni men were taken from various houses in the town and rubbed out.

Attacks also struck in the restive northern provinces of Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...
Nineveh and Salaheddin, leaving four people dead, while six gunnies were also killed.

Diplomats and analysts have urged the authorities to reach out to the Sunni community to undermine support for militancy.

But with parliamentary elections looming at the end of this month, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki
... Prime Minister of Iraq and the secretary-general of the Islamic Dawa Party....
and other Shiite leaders have been loath to be seen to compromise.

Near-daily bloodshed is part of a long list of voter concerns that also include lengthy power cuts, poor waste water treatment, rampant corruption and high unemployment.

17 Dead in Iraq Violence as Elections Loom
2014-04-05
[AnNahar] Violence across Iraq killed 17 people Friday while security forces killed another 15 forces of Evil in festivities south of Storied Baghdad, the latest in a surge of bloodshed ahead of parliamentary elections.

The shootings and bombings, which also maimed dozens more, came with campaigning in full swing for the April 30 election and with violence at its highest level since 2008.

The unrest has been principally driven by anger in the Sunni Arab community over alleged mistreatment at the hands of the Shiite-led government and security forces, as well as a spillover from the civil war in neighboring Syria.

Apart from the capital, Friday's violence struck in predominantly Sunni areas of Nineveh, Salaheddin and Kirkuk provinces to the north, and in Anbar to the west, while security forces engaged in a firefight with gunnies south of Storied Baghdad, security and medical officials said.

The festivities, which broke out during attempted raids of turban strongholds in Yusifiyah, Latifiyah and Jurf al-Sakhr, left 15 forces of Evil dead, while three members of the security forces were also killed.

Elsewhere, a jacket wallah killed an army captain and his son when he went kaboom! on the doorstep of the officer's home in Baiji, while bombings in Storied Baghdad and in the northern provinces killed six others.

Gunmen also rubbed out two anti-al-Qaeda forces of Evil in Salaheddin's capital Tikrit.

In conflict-hit Anbar, army shelling of the turban-held town of Fallujah killed two people, while festivities between security forces and anti-government fighters in lovely provincial capital Ramadi left two coppers dead.

Insurgents overran Fallujah and parts of Ramadi earlier this year.

While security forces have managed to wrest back control of most of Ramadi, Fallujah has been out of government control for about three months.

Militants also destroyed a bridge just north of the capital by setting off several bombs along it.

More than 2,300 people have been killed in Iraq so far this year, according to an Agence La Belle France Presse tally.

Diplomats have urged the government to reach out to the disaffected Sunni minority to undercut support for militancy.

But with the election looming, Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and other Shiite leaders have been loath to be seen to make concessions.

Near-daily bloodshed is part of a long list of voter concerns that also include lengthy power cuts, poor wastewater treatment, rampant corruption and high unemployment.

Suicide Bombers Hit Shiites as Iraq Unrest Kills 41
2013-12-20
[An Nahar] Three jacket wallahs detonated explosives belts among Shiite pilgrims in Iraq on Thursday, killing at least 36 people, while bully boyz rubbed out a family of five, officials said.

The deadliest attack hit the Dura area of south Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
, where a bomber targeted pilgrims at a tent where they are served food and drinks on their way to the shrine city of Karbala, killing at least 20 people and wounding at least 40.

Among those killed in the blast was Muhanad Mohammed, a journalist who had worked for both foreign and Iraqi media, one of his sons told AFP.

He was the seventh journalist to be killed in the country in less than three months.

Two more bombers targeted pilgrims in areas south of Storied Baghdad -- one in Yusifiyah, killing eight people and wounding at least 32, and another in Latifiyah, killing at least eight people and wounding at least 18.

At Yarmuk Hospital in Storied Baghdad, maimed people were rushed in on gurneys for treatment. Those injured included children and an old woman whose face was covered in blood.

One distraught man in the lobby of the surgery department repeatedly struck himself in the face with both hands, overcome with grief.

In the street outside, empty wooden coffins sat on vehicles, while people cried and screamed over the loss of loved ones.

Hundreds of thousands of people make pilgrimages to the city of Karbala, many of them on foot, during the 40 days after the annual commemoration marking the death of the Prophet Mohammed's grandson, known to Shiites as Imam Hussein.

The 40th day, known as Arbaeen, falls on December 23 this year.

Sunni bully boys, including those linked to Al-Qaeda, frequently target members of Iraq's Shiite majority, whom they consider to be apostates.

The throngs of pilgrims on the roads make for an easy target, and they have been hit by a series of attacks in the past few days.

On Wednesday, a suicide bomber targeted Shiite pilgrims in Khales, north of Storied Baghdad, killing five people and wounding 10.

The toll would likely have been higher were it not for the selfless actions of a policeman who embraced the bomber just before the attack, in an effort to shield others from the blast.

On Tuesday, two attacks against pilgrims in and near Storied Baghdad killed at least eight people, and on Monday two boom-mobiles targeting pilgrims south of the capital killed at least 24.

Also on Thursday, bully boyz dressed in army uniforms attacked the house of an anti-Al-Qaeda militiaman in the Abu Ghraib area, west of Storied Baghdad, killing him, his wife and their three children.

The Sahwa militia are made up of Sunni Arabs who joined forces with the United States from late 2006, helping to bring about a significant reduction in violence.

They are often targeted by Sunni bully boys, who consider them traitors.

Violence in Iraq has surged this year to levels not seen since 2008, when the country was just emerging from a brutal sectarian conflict.

More people were killed in the first eight days of this month than in all of December last year.

And more than 6,550 people have been killed since the beginning of 2013, according to AFP figures based on security and medical sources.

Iraq Violence Kills 11, Police Kidnapped
2013-05-19
[Naharnet] Violence in Iraq killed 11 people on Saturday including a police officer, his wife and two children, while gunnies kidnapped up to 10 people, among them police, officials said.

The attacks are the latest in a wave of violence that has killed more than 270 people since the beginning of May, as tensions simmer between Iraq's Sunni minority and Shiite majority.

Gunmen broke into the home of the administrator for the Rashid area, south of Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
, killing one of his guards, an interior ministry official said.

They then moved to the nearby house of Captain Adnan al-Obaidi, a member of a police anti-terrorism unit, and killed him, his wife and their two children, the official said.

In Latifiyah, also south of Storied Baghdad, a boom-mobile went kaboom! in a popular market, killing at least one person and wounding at least 15, medical officials said.

Gunmen also killed a policeman in djinn-infested Mosul in north Iraq and rubbed out a local administrative official to the west of the city, while others killed the imam of a Sunni mosque near the main southern port city of Basra.

Near Ramadi, west of Storied Baghdad, security forces tried to arrest Mohammed Khamis Abu Risha, who is wanted in connection with the killing of five soldiers, police said. That sparked festivities with armed rustics in which two of them were killed.

Abu Risha is the nephew of powerful tribal sheikh Ahmed Abu Risha, a key supporter of Sunni anti-government protesters in Anbar province who led the fight against al-Qaeda in the province from 2007.

The nephew confirmed to Agence La Belle France Presse that two members of his tribe were killed.

Hundreds of gunnies then gathered in the area of the Anbar Operations Command headquarters near Ramadi, but later withdrew, police said.

Meanwhile,
...back at the pie fight, Bella opened her mouth at precisely the wrong moment...
up to 10 people were kidnapped in Anbar province, where Ramadi is located, though security officers gave varying numbers.

The head of the Anbar Operations Command said five police were kidnapped, a figure confirmed by a police officer who said the five were highway police.

A police lieutenant colonel said 10 security forces members had been kidnapped.

Defense ministry front man Mohammed al-Askari gave the same number, telling Al-Hurra TV they were four police, four border guards and two civilians.

The Ramadi area is one of the main centers of the Sunni protest movement in Iraq, which began almost five months ago.

Tensions are festering between Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, a Shiite, and Sunnis who accuse the authorities of marginalizing and targeting their community, including through wrongful detentions and accusations of involvement in terrorism.

While the government has made some concessions, such as freeing prisoners and raising the salaries of Sunni anti-Al-Qaeda gunnies, underlying issues have not been addressed.

Accidental weapons truck explosion kills 18 in Baghdad, wounds 75
2008-06-04
AoS at 1510 CDT: title corrected.
A tractor-trailer loaded with Shiite militia rockets accidentally exploded Wednesday in a densely populated area of northeast Baghdad, killing 18 people and wounding 75, the U.S. military said. It was the deadliest explosion in Baghdad in more than two months.

Iraqi police said the blast was a suicide truck bomb that struck near the home of an Iraqi police general, killing his nephew and wounding his elderly parents.

But the U.S. military said Shiite extremists were positioning a large truck of loaded with rockets and mortars, aiming the weapons at a U.S. combat outpost 700 yards away, when it mistakenly exploded. The explosion crumbled several two-story buildings, buried cars under rubble and sheared off a corrugated steel roof.
From next to the police general's house. How clever.
"They were trying to attack us at that FOB (forwarding operating base), and it went off (accidentally). They wouldn't waste rockets like that," said Lt. Col. Steve Stover, a U.S. military spokesman.

Stover said the militants responsible for the truck had likely fled recent fighting in Sadr City.

Also Wednesday, three U.S. soldiers were shot dead in northern Iraq, and the decaying bodies of at least 23 Iraqis were discovered in a shallow grave and a sewer shaft at separate sites near Baghdad.

The Americans were killed when gunmen opened fire on them in the northern Iraqi village of Hawija, according to a brief military statement. The area, once a hub for Sunni militants and disaffected allies of Saddam Hussein, is thought to have been pacified in recent months. Last year it hosted one of the largest sign-on ceremonies for tribal sheiks partnering with U.S. forces to fight al-Qaida in Iraq.

The latest U.S. deaths brought to at least 4,090 the number of U.S. military personnel who have died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

South of Baghdad, Iraqi villagers and soldiers unearthed at least 13 bodies from a shallow, dusty grave in farmland on the outskirts of Latifiyah, a mostly Sunni town that also has some Shiite residents. The bodies were first discovered Tuesday, but digging continued a day later. Associated Press Television News footage showed Iraqi troops and civilians clawing through dusty soil with shovels. At least three severely decomposed bodies could be seen in side-by-side graves.

The U.S. military could not confirm the discovery, but said its soldiers, acting on a tip from a local citizen, found at least 10 decomposed bodies Tuesday in a separate location, in the sewer shaft of a building in east Baghdad. Those victims appeared to have died more than two years ago, Stover said, adding that Iraqi police have taken over the investigation.

Latifiyah, which lies about 20 miles south of Baghdad, was taken over by al-Qaida-linked militants a few years ago, and became a hotbed of Sunni militant activity before U.S. and Iraqi forces regained control late last year, said Iraqi Maj. Faisal Ali Hussein, who supervised that digging Tuesday.

Only now are villagers — feeling safer without the militants there — beginning to point out possible sites of mass graves in the area, he said.

Most of the bodies were too decomposed to identify and they were reburied next to where they were discovered, said another Iraqi army officer at the scene, who refused to give his name because of safety concerns.
Or did he just refuse to give his name for employment concerns?
Meanwhile, the U.S. military said it detained nine suspects and destroyed two "terrorist safe houses" Wednesday in raids targeting al-Qaida in Iraq across central and northern parts of the country. One of the men had been wanted for alleged involvement in weapons distribution and car bombings in Baghdad, the military said in a statement. Another suspect was responsible for organizing suicide bombings and helping foreign militants enter Iraq, the statement said.

Information from other detainees already in U.S. custody led American troops on Wednesday to two facilities that housed foreign militants west of Mosul, it said. The buildings were safely destroyed.

In a separate operation Wednesday, Iraqi police said they uncovered a large weapons cache near Samarra, 60 miles north of Baghdad. Among the load were hundreds of explosive belts, three assembled car bombs and several different types of rockets, an officer said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the information. One suspect also was arrested in the raid.
Hundreds of explosive belts? Do they really need that many?
