Bowe Bergdahl court-martial conviction for Army desertion thrown out by federal judge
2023-07-26
[FOX] A former U.S. Army soldier who pleaded guilty to desertion after leaving his post while deployed in Afghanistan and was subsequently captured and tortured by the Taliban had his court-martial conviction vacated Tuesday.

The ruling by U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton in Washington D.C. said that military judge Jeffrey Nance, who presided over the court-martial of Bowe Bergdahl,
...that’s former Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who deliberately left his base to meet up with the Taliban in 2009, for which he was charged with desertion and some other things before President Obama decided to trade him for some high value Talibs who were taking up space in Guantanamo. After five years as a Taliban prisoner he was traded for Mohammad Fazl, Khairullah Khairkhwa, Abdul Haq Wasiq, Norullah Noori, and Mohammad Nabi Omari. All five went on to high positions in the Taliban government...
failed to disclose that he had applied to the executive branch for a job as an immigration judge, creating a potential conflict of interest.

Daily Evacuation Brief December 4, 2022
2022-12-04
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • EXPLOSION IN JALALABAD – A blast was reported in Jalalabad’s fourth district on Saturday, near the Sikh Temple (Darmsal). 6 non-combatants were reportedly injured. The circumstances around the explosion are not currently known and no further information was available.

  • SUSPECT IN PAKISTAN EMBASSY ATTACK REPORTEDLY DETAINED – Sources in Pakistan have confirmed that a man who is thought to have participated in the attacks on the Pakistan Charge d’Affaires and its diplomatic facilities was arrested by Taliban authorities. The Taliban used a phone number to track the man’s location and raided a building adjacent to the Embassy. Upon entry, they discovered the man attempting to escape and quickly arrested him. The room was on the 8th floor of the building and was wired with three separate explosives and contained multiple weapons. In an unconfirmed report, Taliban Police are said to have arrested another co-conspirator but no details were provided. In both situations, the electronic devices of both men were said to be recovered intact and may lead to further arrests.

  • FORMER PRESIDENT KARZAI TRAVELS TO THE UAE AND GERMANY – This is Karzai’s first international trip since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan. There was some controversy over earlier trips that had reportedly been planned by the former President. In those instances, the Taliban reputedly denied his request to travel for unspecified reasons. Karzai is traveling to seek medical treatment in Germany and his purpose for visiting the UAE is not known.

  • BERGDAHL EXCHANGE SITE TO BE MADE INTO A MONUMENT – The Taliban held a ceremony and the Interior Minister, Sirajuddin Haqqani, laid the first stone of a proposed monument to freedom that is expected to be built on the site. The 5 prisoners the Obama administration exchanged for US Army Sergeant Bergdahl

are all currently serving in high positions in the nascent regime.
How proud former president Obama must feel. If any of our ghosts in the night happen to be in the area, perhaps they could pay them a visit.
  • CIVIL SOCIETY ACTIVISTS MAKE THEIR CASE FOR THE TALIBAN AND THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY – Conferences were held in Herat and Nimroz with hundreds of civil society activists and leaders in attendance. At least half of the attendees at both gatherings were women. The activists used the events to voice their concerns about several issues facing the civil population. The chief complaint focused on the Taliban’s stance with regard to women. The Taliban’s response to the events was muted and neutral. A series of similarly-themed nationwide gatherings have been planned.

NEXT 24 HOURS
  • SECURITY OPERATIONS IN KABUL TO CONTINUE – Interrogations of the two men the Taliban have taken into custody are expected to reveal others who may have been involved in the plot. As a result, additional clearing operations are expected to take place in and around Kabul.

  • WINTER SLOWS DOWN RESISTANCE ACTIVITIES – Sources close to the NRF and two other Resistance groups claim they will limit operations as winter descends on the country. While some operations are expected to continue, they will likely focus on limited objectives and serve as a means of harassing Taliban forces. The majority of these operations are expected to take place in mainly urban areas. A source in the Ministry of Defense has suggested the Taliban security forces in the North have focused on improving defensive positions around their garrisons in the North and do not anticipate launching major offensive operations over the course of the colder months. Poor weather will limit the ability to use air assets to support attacks and/or respond to Resistance incursions. Terrorism activity is expected to continue throughout the Winter months and is expected to focus on high-priority targets located in urban areas and power distribution networks.

  • CENTRAL BANK AUCTION – Da Afghanistan Bank has nearly doubled the frequency with which it is auctioning US dollars. On Sunday, it will auction approximately $15 million dollars.

Pakistan Invites Taliban, China to Discuss Afghanistan Peace
2020-08-25
[Bloomberg] Pakistan has invited Taliban and Chinese leaders for talks in Islamabad to smooth the way for intra-Afghan negotiations aimed at bringing an end the 19-year war that's ravaged Afghanistan.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood "Wormtongue" Qureshi said talks with a delegation of Taliban leaders would be held on Tuesday, to be followed by a visit by Chinese special envoy for Afghanistan, Liu Jian, to ensure a "coordinated and considered approach" toward peace. The dates for Liu's visit have yet to be announced.

"We can't impose our decisions," Qureshi told a news conference in Islamabad on Monday. "We acknowledge and respect Afghanistan's sovereignty and we are trying to make progress in these engagements." Qureshi didn't give further details of the Taliban's stay in Pakistan.

Other members of the delegation are Khairullah Khairkhwah, Mohammad Nabi Omari, Shahabuddin Delawar, Abdul Latif Mansour and Qari din Mohammad.

Pak Foreign Minister Shah Mahmoud Qureshi said the Taliban was invited by Islamabad for consultations on the grinding of the peace processor in Afghanistan.

"You remember that last time ahead of the Doha agreement, the Taliban came to our Foreign Ministry and we held a long and constructive meeting. You saw that after that, the Taliban came to the negotiations table," Qureshi told news hounds on Monday. "It was not an easy task."

Qureshi said the next step after the agreement should be the start of the intra-Afghan negotiations if the goal is to reach stability and reconciliation.

Taliban front man Shaheen said the grinding of the peace processor and the Afghan refugees’ issues in Pakistain, as well as creating facilities for trade relations between the two countries will be the topics of the delegation’s meeting with Pak officials.

Petraeus Cautions Trump Over Troop Withdrawal From Afghanistan
2019-08-11
Do we still care what General Petraeus, ret. has to say? I can’t remember.
[ToloNews] Mr. Petraeus says that withdrawing all the troops from Afghanistan will be a repeat of the past mistake.

A retired US Army general David Petraeus has suggested that the United States should not abandon Afghanistan as it did Iraq by withdrawing all its troops from the country.

In an article published in the Wall Street Journal and co-written by Vance Serchuk, an adjunct senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security,
...a Washington, D.C.-based bi-partisan think tank established in 2007 by Michèle Flournoy and Kurt M. Campbell, specializing in the American national security issues, terrorism, and the rise of China....
Mr. Petraeus says the history should not be repeated in Afghanistan and that leaders in Washington must proceed with caution.

Mr. Petraeus, who has served as commander of US Central Command and of coalition forces in Iraq and Afghanistan and as director of the Central Intelligence Agency, says that a complete military exit from Afghanistan today would be even more ill-advised and risky than the B.O. regime’s disengagement from Iraq in 2011.

His comments are expressed at a time that the US is negotiating a withdrawal of its troops from Afghanistan with the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
in Doha.

A senior member of the Taliban, Mullah Khairullah Khairkhwah, said on Friday that the US and the Taliban negotiators will likely sign the much-awaited peace agreement after at the end of this week.

Mr. Khairullah said the talks between the US and the group will continue after Eid al-Adha which ends on August 13.

He said that the peace deal between the US and the Taliban will be signed in the presence of representatives of the UN the Islamic Organization and regional countries after the return of the US Special Envoy Zalmay Khalilzad to Doha after Eid (August 14).

Mr. Khalilzad has said that the US is seeking a peace deal which will facilitate a conditions-based withdrawal of American forces from war-ravaged Afghanistan.

But, Mr. Petraeus describes Afghanistan’s situation as complicated due to the presence of "20 foreign terrorist organizations, including al Qaeda and ISIS", who "will not join a peace deal".

US President Donald Trump
...Oh, noze! Not him!...
in many occasions in the last few months has mentioned that he will withdraw his troops from Afghanistan as he has spent billions of dollars for the longest war in US history.

Mr. Petraeus says that "the idea that the US can leave if the Taliban promise to combat rather than conspire with these groups is wrongheaded".

He says that the Taliban have clearly indicated what they will try to do once US forces are gone: overthrow the Afghan government and reimpose medieval rule.

Their resistance to a formal cease-fire, continued barbaric attacks on civilians, and opposition to elections scheduled for this fall are all warning signs, he says.

As an alternative, Mr. Petraeus, suggests that it should be recognized that the US doesn’t need a plan for leaving but a strategy for staying‐one that carefully minimizes American, coalition and Afghan costs and casualties but accepts the necessity of a sustained and sustainable troop presence to safeguard vital US interests.

He says that the Trump administration should apply the lessons of that tragic experience ‐ during the B.O. regime ‐ to the present situation in South Asia.

He concludes that the kind of US withdrawal that was inadvisable in Iraq eight years ago would be indefensible for Afghanistan today.

Sources familiar with US-Taliban talks say that the intra-Afghan negotiation ‐ which will take place after a peace agreement is signed between the United States and the Taliban ‐ will be held in Oslo where the two sides will discuss a ceasefire among other relevant topics.

For now, the US Special Envoy Zalmay Khalilzad has said that the focus will be to reduce violence in Afghanistan.

Ambassador Khalilzad cautiously expressed optimisms regarding the reconciliation between the Afghan government and Taliban and said he expects a breakthrough until April of 2019.

In the meantime, informed sources have told Western media outlets that Ambassador Khalilzad met with the Taliban politicians in Qatar

during separate meetings which lasted for three days.

The meetings were reportedly attended by Taliban leaders Khairullah Khairkhwa and Mohammad Afzal.

According to the reports, the Talibs have demanded the suspension of presidential elections and formation of a transitional government.

Khalilzad arrived in Kabul last week to the meet with the Afghan leaders and officials ahead of his trip to Qatar.

The Office of the President, ARG Palace, said last week that Ambassador Khalilzad briefed President Ghani regarding the ongoing efforts for an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned grinding of the peace processor and his planned trips to certain countries.

Ambassador Khalilzad said he would provide further information once completing his trips to the countries which he had visited earlier.

He added that he has found that Pakistain has little control over the Taliban faction led by Mullah Rasoul. The group led by Mullah Rasoul is more interested to join the grinding of the peace processor -- compared to other factions of Taliban, he added.

In addition he said there are a number of key Taliban leaders in Qatar

According to him, the Qatar Taliban office has the responsibility of Taliban's foreign policy. This office takes orders from Quetta Shura, the report said.

According to the report, there are five key members of Taliban -- including Mullah Fazil Akhund, Mullah Khairullah Khairkhwah, Mullah Abdulhaq Wasiq, Mullah Noorullah Noori and Mullah Mohammad Nabi Omari.

Sharif said that the Taliban is not the only problem for Afghanistan; there are up to 5,000 foreign rebels, including Arab, Chechen and Uzbek fighters, fighting against security forces in Afghanistan.

It is believed that if the Taliban agrees to peace with the Afghan government, the groups will still pose a threat to the country's security.

Freed Taliban Militants Say Committed to Qatar Deal
2014-06-09
[AnNahar] Five leading Afghan Death Eaters freed from Guantanamo Bay in exchange for a U.S. soldier have pledged to honor an agreement between the Taliban and Qatar, which is hosting them.

The men, officials in the Taliban regime driven from power by the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, were released on May 31 and flown to Qatar in exchange for U.S. army sergeant Bowe Bergdahl.

Their release provoked criticism from some U.S. politicians, who said they could pose a threat to Americans abroad, and anger from Afghans opposed to the Taliban.

But in a statement posted on their Pashto-language website on Friday, the men said they would remain faithful to an agreement with Qatar, which mediated their release.

"We want to reassure all sides that we are still holding to the agreement which was reached between the Islamic Emirate (the Taliban) and the government of Qatar on our release," they said, urging the release of fellow Talibs held in Guantanamo.

The freed prisoners are Mohammad Fazl, Norullah Noori, Mohammed Nabi, Khairullah Khairkhwa and Abdul Haq Wasiq.

Little has been revealed about the deal, but Qatar has said it will impose a one-year travel ban on the men.

U.S. President Barack Obama

is facing intense scrutiny over the deal to secure Bergdahl's release after five years.

He said Qatar had set up a process to monitor the prisoners and the U.S. would also be "keeping eyes on them."

But Obama admitted it was possible some of them could return to activity "detrimental" to the United States.

Freed Afghan Taliban Want to 'Work for Peace'
2014-06-04
[AnNahar] One of the five senior Taliban figures released from Guantanamo Bay in exchange for a U.S. soldier wants to rejoin the Afghan Death Eater group but to work for peace, his relative told Agence La Belle France Presse Tuesday.

Norullah Noori is accused of taking part in the 1998 massacre of thousands of Shiites when he was governor of the northern province of Balkh.

He and the four others were released on Saturday and flown to the Gulf state of Qatar in exchange for U.S. Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl.

"After he was released we talked to him and he is very willing to return to Afghanistan," Noori's cousin Abdullah told AFP in a telephone interview.

"He says he wants to join the Taliban again and bring changes to Taliban. He says Afghanistan needs peace now and he will work for peace with the Taliban," Abdullah said, denying Noori's involvement in the 1998 massacre.

Khairullah Khairkhwa, also freed Saturday, has expressed a similar desire to push for talks to end Afghanistan's long conflict "but not under the (government's) so-called peace council programs", a close relative told AFP via a video call from Pakistain.

The relative did not wish to be identified.

But some moderate elements are believed to have broken ranks and engaged in dialogue, raising hopes for peace as Washington prepares to pull out the bulk of its troops from the country by the end of the year.

The allegations around Noori center on an August 1998 massacre of up to 8,000 Shiites at the hands of the Taliban, who were avenging the killing of 2,000 of their own men the year before.

the Afghanistan Analysts Network, a think-tank, said no clear evidence has been presented to back up the allegation.

Bergdahl -- the only U.S. soldier held by the Taliban after being captured in Afghanistan -- was freed under the dramatic deal brokered by Qatar.

Mohammad Fazl, Mohammad Nabi and Abdul Haq Wasiq were the other Taliban members to be freed.

All five were influential officials in the Taliban regime driven from power by the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan after the 9/11 attacks.

Their release has evoked sharp criticism from some U.S. politicians, who fear they could return to the battlefield and pose a threat to Americans abroad.

It has also provoked revulsion among Afghans in those parts of the country traditionally opposed to the Islamists.

Many Afghans Oppose Release of Taliban Officials
2014-06-03
[AnNahar] Many ordinary Afghans said Monday the five senior Taliban figures who were freed in exchange for a U.S. soldier had blood on their hands and their release would strengthen the bad boys.

The men are all former officials of the Taliban regime that ruled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001.

The turbans have been battling the Western-backed Afghan government since they were ousted from power in a U.S.-led invasion.

The Taliban had long demanded the release of the five, who are considered still influential within the movement.

They were freed from Guantanamo Bay and transferred to the Gulf state of Qatar, in exchange for army sergeant Bowe Bergdahl who had been captured by the Taliban five years ago.

Of the five, Norullah Noori, the ex-governor of the northern province of Balkh, was seen as the most controversial among the people AFP spoke to in the area, where he is accused of taking part in the 1998 massacre of thousands of Shiites.

The others include Khairullah Khairkhwa, the Taliban interior minister who is considered a relative moderate; Mohammad Fazl, a leading commander with a strong battlefield reputation; Abdul Haq Wasiq, deputy head of the Taliban intelligence service; and Mohammad Nabi.

Nabi, the least known, may have been held on suspicion of ties to the Al-Qaeda-linked Haqqani myrmidon network.

All the men are now in Qatar, which helped broker the deal, and are under a one-year travel ban under the conditions of their release.

Hussain Ali, a taxi driver in Balkh bustling provincial capital of Mazar-e-Sharif, said: "Our close relatives and loved ones and neighbors were killed during Noori's term as governor.

"We are very disappointed to hear about the release of these prisoners," he added.

Amir Mohammad Ziaye, a prominent Shiite leader, added: "These prisoners should not have been handed over to Qatar, they should have been handed over to the Afghan government and Noori should have been tried for war crimes."

The allegations around Noori center on an August 1998 massacre of up to 8,000 Shiites at the hands of the Taliban, who were bent on avenging the killing of 2,000 of their own men a year earlier.

Noori's Guantanamo Bay detention file notes he is "wanted by the United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
for possible war crimes including the murder of thousands of Shites". But the respected Afghanistan Analysts Network said no clear evidence has been presented to back up the allegation.

Bahara Bahar, a female activist in the western city of Herat
...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns...
, said the release had dealt a psychological blow to people after years of fighting the Taliban.

"It is almost election time and the release of these five senior members of the Taliban... will scare and dishearten people," she said.

In Pashtun-dominated areas of the country, however, many welcomed the release.

Khalid Zia, a lecturer at Nangarhar

University in the east, said: "We consider the release a positive move that will help pave the way for peace negotiations and strengthen morale."
