India requests Pakistan to extradite Hafiz Saeed in 'so-called money laundering case'
2023-12-30
[GEO.TV] India has requested Pakistain to extradite Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, the chief of the banned Jamaat-ud-Dawa
...the front organization of Lashkar-e-Taiba...
(JuD), the Foreign Office confirmed Friday.

"Pakistain has received a request from the Indian authorities, seeking extradition of Hafiz Saeed
...founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba and its false-mustache offshoot Jamaat-ud-Dawa. The United Nations declared the JuD a terrorist organization in 2008 and Hafiz Saeed a terrorist as its leader. Hafiz, JuD and LeT are wholly-owned subsidiaries of the Pak intel apparatus, so that amounted to squat. He is periodically placed under house arrest so it looks like the govt is doing something. Once the heat is off they let him go....
in a so-called money laundering case," Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said in a statement.

However,
there's no worse danger than telling a mother her baby is ugly...
there might be no plans to follow up on India’s request, as according to the spokesperson, "no bilateral extradition treaty exists between Pakistain and India".

India blames Saeed for being involved in attacks across the borders, however, the chief of the banned outfit has denied all claims.

A Pak court had sentenced Hafiz Saeed, founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba
...the Army of the Pure, an Ahl-e-Hadith terror organization founded by Hafiz Saeed. LeT masquerades behind the Jamaat-ud-Dawa facade within Pakistain and periodically blows things up and kills people in India. Despite the fact that it is banned, always an interesting concept in Pakistain, the organization remains an blatant tool and perhaps an arm of the ISI...
(LeT), the gang blamed by the United States and India for the deadly 2008 Mumbai siege, to 31 years in prison in two cases of terrorism financing.

An anti-terrorism court in Lahore had found Saeed guilty of terrorism financing in April 2022 and sentenced him to 32 years in jail.

Hours before Zahra’s confirmation, India had also confirmed it had formally requested Pakistain to extradite Saeed, according to India's foreign ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi.

"We have conveyed a request along with relevant supporting documents to the Government of Pakistain," Bagchi told news hounds in a media briefing.

Saeed conviction in 2022 was not the only one. Arrested in 2019, he was already serving a 15-year sentence after being found guilty of terror financing in 2020.

Saeed, who was put behind bars many times before over the past decade, denies being involved with armed operations, including the 2008 attacks in Mumbai, which killed 166 people.

Gujranwala court extends Hafiz Saeed's judicial remand for 14 days
2019-07-25
The usual routine is to give them house arrest and then quietly spring them in six months or so.
[DAWN] A court in Gujranwala on Wednesday extended the judicial remand of Jamaat-ud-Dawa
...the front organization of Lashkar-e-Taiba...
(JuD) chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed for 14 days.

Special Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) judge Syed Ali Imran ordered the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) to complete its investigation and present a formal chalan in court on August 7. The court said that Saeed should also be presented in court on Aug 7.

Ahead of the JuD chief's appearance, strict security arrangements were made inside and outside the court premises with Anti-Riot Police, Dolphin Force and Elite Force personnel as well as police officials being deployed.

Following his arrest on July 17, Saeed had been sent to jail on seven-day judicial remand.

He had been arrested in connection with a terrorism financing case while on his way from Lahore to Gujranwala.

Six suspects ‐ Saeed, Mohammad Ali of Malikwal, Abdul Ghaffar of Okara, Hafiz Masood of Johar Town (Lahore), Ameer Hamza of Al Faisal Town and Malik Zafar Iqbal of Sheikhupura ‐ were nominated in the FIR registered against them on July 1 on a complaint of the CTD.

On July 3, the top 13 leaders of the banned JuD, including Saeed and Naib Emir Abdul Rehman Makki, were booked in nearly two dozen cases for terror financing and money laundering under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.

The CTD, which registered the cases in five cities of Punjab, declared that the JuD was financing terrorism from the massive funds collected through non-profit organizations and trusts, including al-Anfaal Trust, Dawatul Irshad Trust, Muaz Bin Jabal Trust, etc.

Pakistani police arrest Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed (again)
2019-07-17
[al jazeera] Pakistani police have arrested Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, the founder of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) armed group and head of its Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) humanitarian wing, intercepting him on his way to court in the central city of Gujranwala,
The pancake hat, a dead giveaway.
Saeed was arrested on Wednesday by a group of counterterrorism department police at the Kamoke toll plaza, about 50km north of Pakistan's second city Lahore, JuD spokesman Nadeem Awan told Al Jazeera.

"The cases against him are all related to fundraising," Awan said. "He is charged with terrorism financing."
and masterminding the Mumbai massacre, but that's not grounds for punishment in The Land of the Pure
The JuD said it would challenge the arrest in court and apply for bail for Saeed.

"We are going to the High Court, and we will continue to use legal means to fight the injustice against us, and we believe the courts will support us," Awan said.

Hafiz Saeed, aides move court against terror financing charges
2019-07-14
[DAWN] Jamatud Dawa chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed and his seven aides have approached the Lahore High Court challenging a case carrying charge of terror financing lodged by the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) by ’wrongly’ showing them as members of the proscribed Lashkar-e-Taiba
...the Army of the Pure, an Ahl-e-Hadith terror organization founded by Hafiz Saeed. LeT masquerades behind the Jamaat-ud-Dawa facade within Pakistain and periodically blows things up and kills people in India. Despite the fact that it is banned, always an interesting concept in Pakistain, the organization remains an blatant tool and perhaps an arm of the ISI...
(LeT).

In a joint petition filed through senior lawyer A.K Dogar, the JuD leaders submitted that the facts narrated in the impugned FIR lodged on July 1, 2019 illegally described them as members of the LeT and levelled unlawful allegation of terror financing.

The counsel referred to a 2009 judgment by a full bench of the LHC against the detention of Hafiz Saeed...founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba and its false-mustache offshoot Jamaat-ud-Dawa. The United Nations declared the JuD a terrorist organization in 2008 and Hafiz Saeed a terrorist as its leader. Hafiz, JuD and LeT are wholly-owned subsidiaries of the Pak intel apparatus, so that amounted to squat...
at that time and stated that the petitioners were not members of the LeT.

He stated that the LHC through another judgment issued in 2003 had held that Saeed had left the leadership of LeT on Dec 24, 2001 while the organization was banned on Jan 14, 2002.

The lawyer pleaded that the claim of the government that the petitioners were the members of the LeT stood disapproved in the light of the two judgments. Therefore, he asked the court to quash the impugned FIR lodged by the CTD for being unlawful and of no legal effect.

The other petitioners include Muhammad Ayub Sheikh, Zafar Iqbal, Syed Luqman Ali Shah, Hafiz Abdul Rehman Makki, Abdul Salam, Abdul Ghaffar and Abdul Qudoos Shahid.

Aasia Bibi case: JuD says it believes in legal recourse
2018-11-12
[DAWN] The Jamaat-ud-Dawa
...the front organization of Lashkar-e-Taiba...
(JuD) has some reservations over the Aasia Bibi issue but it also has respect for the national institutions including the judiciary and that’s why it did not join the recent protest.

Explaining the low profile of the JuD in the otherwise violent protests by religiopolitical parties, party front man Ahmed Nadeem told Dawn that the party issued protest call for Friday last two days after the court decision was announced. But as the protests started going violent, the JuD decided to restrict itself to Friday sermons instead of coming on the roads.

"The day the decision was announced, the party consultative body was already in meeting. It discussed the decision threadbare and consulted senior lawyers on the issue. After the consultation, the party thought that it was legal mistake and can only be rectified through legal process. After all, the trial court sentenced her to death after a long trial. Later, the Lahore High Court upheld the sentence. Now the Supreme Court has set her free, giving her the benefit of the doubt.

"The JuD was of the opinion that the quantum of the benefit of the doubt (whether it was reasonable or not) can only be judged by lawyers and only they could plead it before court. So, instead of taking to the street, the party decided to wait for exhaustion of the legal process. That is precisely why the JuD chief was the first to demand a review petition. Others (Mufti Munib, Sirajul Haq
...current head of the Pak Jamaat-e-Islami. Siraj was born in 1962 and entered politics shortly after that...
et al) followed him the next day," says Mr Nadeem.

Substantiating his claim of non-violence being party philosophy, Mr Nadeem said the party kept its cool even when the government took over its charity organizations. It only challenged the decision in court. It did not go violent when its leader Hafiz Muhammad Saeed was jugged
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
in January this year and the party chief himself had directed his men to stay peaceful and concentrate on Kashmire Day. "It only goes to prove that the party respects the legal process and will wait for its exhaustion," he said and added: "It was very much part of a day-long (Friday) peaceful protest but went quiet when protests turned violent."

Court allows lawful activities of JuD, FIF
2018-04-07
[DAWN] The Lahore High Court on Thursday restrained the government from extending harassment to the social welfare organizations of Hafiz Muhammad Saeed and also allowed lawful activities of Jamatud Dawa (JuD) and Falah-e-Insaniat Foundation (FIF).

Justice Aminuddin Khan was hearing a petition moved by Hafiz Saeed
...founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba and its false-mustache offshoot Jamaat-ud-Dawa. The United Nations declared the JuD a terrorist organization in 2008 and Hafiz Saeed a terrorist as its leader. Hafiz, JuD and LeT are wholly-owned subsidiaries of the Pak intel apparatus, so that amounted to squat...
challenging a notification of ministry of interior with regard to freezing bank accounts and taking over assets associated with both organizations- JuD and FIF‐under the Anti-Terrorism (amendment) Ordinance 2018.

The petitioner’s counsel, A.K Dogar, said the government of Pakistain acted against these organizations under the pressure of foreign powers, including United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
and India. He contended that Pakistain was a sovereign independent state and made its own laws to govern its citizens. He said if there was a conflict between the laws of the land and any provision of United Nations Security Council Act, 1948, the law of the land shall prevail, he added.

He pointed out that the FIF owned 369 ambulances, had helped 72,000 persons through its charity hospitals and treated 600,000 patients only in 2017. He said the JuD dug out 2,000 wells for supplying water in Tharparkar, Balochistan...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
and Baltistan.

The counsel asked the court to declare the impugned notification of the interior ministry null and void with regard to taking over the assets of the organizations.

The judge restrained the government from harassing the petitioner’s organizations and sought reply from the interior ministry by April 23.

Govt stopped from taking ‘illegal’ steps against Hafiz Saeed
2018-01-26
[DAWN] The Lahore High Court on Wednesday restrained the government from taking any illegal action against Jamaat-ud-Dawa
...the front organization of Lashkar-e-Taiba...
(JuD) chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, who had approached the court fearing possible arrest on account of a UN delegation arriving this week.

Justice Aminuddin Khan issued the stay order at the first hearing of Mr Saeed’s petition, challenging his possible arrest at the behest of United States and India.

Advocate A.K. Dogar appeared on behalf of Mr Saeed and argued that a delegation of the United Nations
...the Oyster Bay money pit...
was arriving in the country on Jan 26 and the government of Pakistain intended to take action against his client ’to please the American and Indian lobby’. The court directed the Ministry of Interior and Punjab

Material against Hafiz Saeed presented in camera
2017-11-03
[DAWN] Attorney-General for Pakistain Ashtar Ausaf Ali on Wednesday presented ’sensitive’ documents before a judge of the Lahore High Court in his chamber to defend detention of Jamatud Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed
...who would be wearing a canvas jacket with very long sleeves anyplace but Pakistain...
Earlier, the AGP told the judge that the documentary material relied upon by the federal government to detain Mr Saeed was sensitive in nature and would not be appropriate to present in open court. He sought permission from the court to produce the relevant material in chamber and also requested it not to place the same on record of the case.

After Justice Syed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi allowed the request the AGP shared the documents with the judge in his chamber where Advocate Dogar was also present.

Prior to the chamber’s proceedings, an officer of ministry of interior told the court that the JuD chief were tossed into the calaboose in the light of reports and recommendations by intelligence agencies. The judge would resume hearing today (Thursday).

Challenging the detention of Hafiz Saeed, Advocate Dogar had contended that the government detained his client on the basis of mere apprehensions and hearsay. He argued that an order of preventive detention had to satisfy the requirements laid down by the Supreme Court in its many judgments but in the instant case sheer violation of laws had been committed by the government.

He said imprisonment without trial and conviction was prima facie unlawful and unconstitutional.

A provincial review board had approved an application of the government seeking extension in the detention of Mr Saeed for another 30 days starting from Oct 25. However,
it's easy to be generous with someone else's money...
the board did not allow further detention of four other JuD leaders.

Hafiz Saeed sends Khawaja Asif Rs100m defamation notice

...founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba and its false-mustache offshoot Jamaat-ud-Dawa. The United Nations declared the JuD a terrorist organization in 2008 and Hafiz Saeed a terrorist as its leader. Hafiz, JuD and LeT are wholly-owned subsidiaries of the Pak intel apparatus, so that amounted to squat...
‐ on Friday sent a Rs100 million defamation notice to Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif for his remarks at the Asia Society forum in New York earlier this week.

Asif, who told the forum that Pakistain was not to blame for myrmidon outfits in the country, had said: "Don't blame us for the Haqqanis [the Haqqani Network] and don't blame us for the Hafiz Saeeds [referring to the head of banned Jamaat-ud-Dawa]. These people were your darlings just 20 to 30 years back. They were being dined and wined in the White House and now you say 'go to hell Paks because you are nurturing these people'."

Explore: Don't blame Pakistain, Haqqanis were your 'darlings' at one time: Asif tells US

The notice, served by Advocate AK Dogar under Section 8 of the Defamation Ordinance of 2002, claims that Saeed is "respected as a deeply religious and devout Moslem".

"I will be failing in my duty as a lawyer if I do not remind you of the Fundamental Right enshrined in Article 14 that [the] dignity of man is guaranteed by our Constitution," it continues.

The notice accuses Asif of "an absolute lie and falsehood that Hafiz Muhammad Saeed
...who would be wearing a canvas jacket with very long sleeves anyplace but Pakistain...
is one of those persons who had been the darlings of Americans and had been dining and wining in the White House."

"I have been advised by Hafiz Muhammad Saeed to tell you that he has never been near the White House, not to speak of wined and dined. It is shocking to know that the foreign minister of my country is accusing Hafiz Muhammad Saeed of taking wine. This is abusive language and can never be used about my client. He is [a] patriotic Islam loving Moslem following the dictates of [the] Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him). This is a defamatory statement punishable under Section 500 of the Pakistain Penal Code (PPC) to five years imprisonment and with [a] fine."
