3 killed in shootouts
2011-03-02
[Bangla Daily Star] Three criminals, including an outlaw, were killed in 'shootouts' with the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in Kushtia and Bagerhat early yesterday and Monday afternoon.
Efficiency, thy name is Rab.
Of the dead, one was identified as Raisuddin, 32, a regional leader of the outlawed 'Gono Bahini' while the other two could not be identified as of yesterday.
It seems to be the turn of the Bahinis, the Purba Banglars having taken the brunt for a while.
Raisuddin, who was accused in several cases, including five for murder,
Bahinis are badmen, loved only by their mothers... and sometimes not even them.
was killed in a 'shootout' between his cohorts and Rab at Modhupur early yesterday, our correspondent in Kushtia reports.
The Rab are so busy they don't have time to write their own reports anymore?
Acting on a tip-off,
"Yo! Mahmoud the Weasel! Got any hot ones?"
a team of Rab-12 raided an orchard
Suitably proletarian. We approve.
at Modhupur at about 12:15am where the gang was holding a meeting.
"Yar!"
"Yar, yar!"
"YARRRRRR!"
Sensing their presence,
My spider sense! It's tingling again! To arms! Aux barricades!
the gang opened fire on the elite force members, prompting them to retaliate.
[BANG! BANG! BANGETY BANG!]
Raisuddin was hit by several bullets and was struck down in his prime
"Rosebud"
while his accomplices managed to flee the scene.
... as though they had never been...

Rab recovered his body from the spot, along with two firearms, four bullets, and three sharp weapons.
Their correspondent clearly has read the Rab stylebook, so that's ok.
Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch...
our Bagerhat correspondent reports that two unidentified criminals were killed in another 'shootout' in the Sundarbans near Beki canal under Sharankhola upazila of Bagerhat, Monday afternoon.
Someone fetch... The Map!
A team of Rab conducting a drive
Beating the bush for game, were they?
in the Sundarbans, at about 11:45pm, came across an empty boat in the canal and recovered firearms from it, Assistant Commander of Rab-8 Major Sabbir told The Daily Star.

The criminals who were hiding in the forest opened fire on the elite force members, prompting them to fire back which triggered a battle.
Naturally. What else was to be done, after all.
After 20 minutes Rab members recovered two bullet-hit bodies from the spot and took them to Sharankhola Police Station.
What?!? Not to the overworked Dr. Quincy at the hospital, to decree that the dead bodies were indeed dead? Truly, these are degenerate times.
Rab also seized three firearms, eight bullets, 12 cartridges, three sharp weapons, and a cell phone from the boat.
Perhaps one of those firearms is the long-lost shuttergun. But with such a long list of seizures, some detail must be lost.

2 outlaws killed in shootout
2011-02-19
[Bangla Daily Star] Two bandidos were banged in a 'shootout' with law enforcers here early yesterday.

The dear departed are Dulal Bepari alias Jamai Dulal, 33, of Padma Nagar in Harinakundo upazila and Mashiur Rahman, 31, of Shantidanga in Shailakupa upazila. Locals identified them as cadres of banned Jashad Gono Bahini.

A joint team of Rapid Action Battalionand police started a drive at a banana orchard in Joyantinagar village under Shailakupa upazila around 3:45am on information that a group of outlaws gathered there, said Rezaul Karim, superintendent of Jhenaidah police.
Meanwhile, Mamoud the Weasel partied hard elsewhere with his blood soaked confidential informant's loot.
Sensing danger, the gang opened fire on the law enforcement team compelling them to retaliate. The 'shootout' continued for at least 20 minutes before the beturbanned goons retreated, added the SP.
...into the foggy night, as it were...
Police found the two bullet hit and rushed them to Shailakupa Health Complex where doctors declared them dead.
I'm getting older faster than he is, Doc. Just sign the damn form. It's 0400!
A member each from Rab and police suffered minor injuries during the clash.
But nothing a set of nail clippers and some Jergen's Lotion wouldn't fix...
Law enforcers recovered a 9mm pistol, a shot gun, a rifle, a shutter gun, nine bullets, three cleavers, four bottles of phensedyl, ten pairs of slippers and a cash amount of Tk 1,325 from the spot.
That's quite a haul, and cough syrup to boot.
They did honor the dear deceased by planting the shutter gun on him.
The dear departed are accused in several cases, including murder, noted police.

Rivals gun down Pabna outlaw

An outlaw of banned Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCB- Lal Pataka) was allegedly bumped off by activists of another faction of the outfit in Chandai of Atghoria upazila early yesterday over suspected party rivalry, reports our Pabna correspondent.
Singing the whole time: It's my party and you'll die if I want to...
The dear departed is Md Hazrat Ali, 35, of the same village. He is an accused in seven cases, including murder, police said.
Bad dude...
Criminals caught him at Chandai Bazar on Thursday night and shot him to death around 3:00am yesterday, said Md Enamul Karim, Officer in-Charge of Atghoria Police Station, quoting the victim's family sources.

Police recovered the body around 10:00am and sent it to Pabna General Hospital morgue for his appointment with Doctor Quincy. There were injury marks on his body, added the OC.

'Outlaw' killed in 'shootout'
2010-10-10
[Bangla Daily Star] A regional leader of outlawed Gono Bahini
Maoist communists, as I recall, although I could be wrong. I'm still not sure what Third Wayers are...
was killed in a 'shootout' between his cohorts and law enforcers at Bhedmari village of Mirpur upazila
It's on the map -- really. The 1:15 one, anyway... somewhere. You'll need to hone your map-reading skillz, though.
early hours yesterday.

The deseased, Amzad Hossain Mollik, 42,
A rich man. He had three names.
was working to regroup the party cadres in the area, police claimed. He was accused in five cases, including three murder charges.
What is it about Communist cadres and crime? Thoroughgoing badmen, all of them -- their mothers should be ashamed.
A joint team of Mirpur Police Station and Detective Branch (DB) of police raided a village field
Properly proletarian..
where Amzad and his associates were holding a secret meeting around 12:15am.
A bit early, but perhaps they were just getting started.
The gang threw two bombs
That seems a bit extreme. Most miscreants, even Communists, are content with shutter guns and such.
at them which prompted the police to retaliate with gunshots, added police.

"The law enforcers found Amzad's body on the field after the shootout," said Assistant Superintended of Police of Kushtia, Chokdar Abdul Halim. However,
The infamous However...
his accomplices managed to evaporate the scene.

Police recovered an LG, 16 rounds of bullet and four bombs from the spot.
Interesting that the police report only says that the first two bombs were thrown, not that they exploded. One wonders whether the AQAP master bomber came for a training seminar -- the Pakistani and Iraqi IED makers were so much more effective.
With this, a total of 12 'crossfire' incidents took place in Kushtia in last nine months since January 1, leaving 13 alleged offenders dead. The figure was 42 in 2009.

2 outlaws killed in shootouts
2010-05-16
[Bangla Daily Star] Two outlaws were killed in separate incidents of "shootouts" between their cohorts and Rapid Action Battalion personnel in Pabna and Kushtia early yesterday.

The deceased were identified as Saidul Haq Sayeed, 40, a regional commander of outlawed group "Gono Bahini" of Kushtia and Abdul Malek alias Kata Malek, 35, an operative of "Bahini" of Pabna.

In Kushtia, a team of Rab, acting on information, raided a brick field at Atigram in Mirpur upazila shortly after midnight when members of "Gono Bahini" were holding a clandestine meeting there.
Ah, the brick field. The Gono Bahini must be traditionalists. No schoolyards for them. They made an early night of it, too.
Sensing presence of the Rab personnel, the outlaws fired shots, prompting them to retaliate which triggered a gunfight, Major Zakir Hossain of Rab-12 told The Daily Star.

Sayeed got killed in the shootout while his accomplices managed to flee the scene. Later, the elite force members recovered two light guns, seven bullets, one explosive and a knife from the spot.

Sayeed was accused in at least eight cases, including two for murder and four for extortion, the Rab official said.

In Pabna, a team of Rab, acting on a tip-off, raided Faila village at about 2:30am where the operatives of the outlawed organisation, "Bahini" was holding a meeting, reports our correspondent.

Rab said the outlaws opened fire as they sensed their presence.
Again? The RAB really need to work on reducing that 'presence' thing.
Abdul Malek was caught in the line of fire of the resulting battle, while his cohorts managed to flee. His body was later recovered from the spot.

Malek, son of Habibur Rahman of Shibpur village in Atghoria upazila was accused in 10 cases, including six for murder, added Rab.

Rab also retrieved a rifle of foreign manufacture and a shutter gun from the scene.
So that's why there wasn't a shutter gun found at Mirpur upazila...

JMB finds friends in outlawed parties
2010-04-25
Where else would they look?
Banned Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh has approached a new strategy to regain its strength and is trying to develop ties with different groups including the outlawed parties.
Because when you're one of the uncool kids, hanging out with those even less cool will make you cooler.
Officials of Rapid Action Battalion fighting militancy say they have already marked and broke a link between JMB and outlawed Gono Bahini.
I'll bet the shutter gun got a real workout, too ...
"The JMB contacted an outlawed group for firearms but failed as we detected and dismantled the link," Rab Director (intelligence wing) Lt Col Ziaul Ahsan told The Daily Star.

Rab sources say JMB was left in ruins following the execution of its six top brass leaders in 2007 and constant arrest of other leaders and operatives. But now the outfit might try to establish a relation with other banned outfits like Harkatul Jihad al Islami, Hizb-ut Tahrir and even the war criminals to regain strength.
Birds of a feather ...
The sources add they have information that JMB Shura member Sohel Mahfuz, who hails from Charsreekal village in Kumarkhali upazila, Kushtia, sought firearms several times from top Gono Bahini leader Ashraful Islam alias Mandar about a month ago.

Mandar was eventually spotted and killed in a "shootout" with the Rab members in Kushtia on April 7.
RAB spotted him, grabbed him, cuffed him, put him in the back of a 2-1/2 ton truck, drove to the banana grove in Kushtia, put a round of bullet behind each ear, rolled him out the back of the truck, retrieved the cuffs, carefully planted the shutter gun, took pictures, retrieved said shutter gun, lit cigars, drove back home, wiped down shutter gun, put shutter gun in velvet case, finished cigars, returned shutter gun to Sergeant Chaudhray at the RAB lock-up, transmitted pics to RAB PR department, filed expenses, and went home to bed.
Whew! It's a good thing they're fit, with such a schedule.
Interestingly, JMB came to limelight for its so-called outlaw cleansing operation in 2003 under the banner Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB) in different northwestern districts.

Several ministers of the then ruling four-party alliance government and party leaders patronised JMJB in the vigilante operations that left several people dead.

Meanwhile, Rab officials say JMB is still running its invitational activities in limited scale in all district and divisional headquarters despite being almost in a fragile state. Its invitation wing members are targeting students of schools, colleges and madrasas for recruitment. The JMB members are however a bit more active in the districts of Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh, Kishoreganj and Comilla, they observe.

Some recently held JMB operatives revealed these to the crime busting force during interrogation, Rab officials say.

Lt Col Ziaul Ahsan said, "Some arrested JMB operatives admitted that their operatives hiding in district towns as rickshaw-pullers or hotel boys continue 'dawati' activities in mosques in limited scale posing as Tabligh Jamaat men."

He added JMB members first target simpleton students from madrasas, schools and colleges in guise of Tabligh men. When they think their targets have become infatuated with Islam, the militants invite them to join JMB.

He however said JMB is running this activity very secretly and in a very limited scale as the outfit is under constant surveillance of Rab. The elite force, however, could not give the exact number of active JMB leaders and operatives.

Former military wing commander of JMB "Boma" Mizan during interrogation said the outfit has around 100 Eshar (in-charge of a certain area) members, 500 Gayeri Ehsar (active members) and around 1,000 general members and 2,000 supporters across the country. Mizan was arrested on May 14 last year.

The Rab has so far arrested 558 JMB members. Of them, 13 are Majlish-e-Shura members, 112 Ehsar members and the rest are Gayeri Ehsar or general members or supporters.

With all those names to remember, a simple alias seems a good idea.

6. Fire madly into the night, frightening the local kiddies out of a year's growth. (That's why the locals are so much shorter than those who emigrated to saner countries.)
Rab retaliated it triggering the gunfight.

At one stage, Mandar's accomplices fled the scene.

WHO IS MANDAR
Mandar, son of Abzal Mondol of Khordobakhail village in Kushtia sadar upazila, got involved with Gono Bahini through his uncle Azibor in 1996.
Ah. A nice little family business.
He first killed Hobi and Kasem, cadres of his rival party Gono Mukti Fouz, at Lasmipur bus stand on June 18, 2000.

After that, he went on a killing spree in Kushtia, Chuadanga and Jhenidah. On August 1, 2000 he killed Khalil Mondol and Labu at his village. On October 22, he killed three of his opponents--Lalon, Kapil and Sariful--in the same village.

Police and Rab said Mandar and his accomplices also killed Raihan, chairman of Jhoudia Union Parishad Abdul Aziz, Nabis Uddin, Chhoto Hasem, Saheb Ali, Mojnu Kha, Hila Kha and Sarwar in between 2000 and 2001.

Mandar abducted Sawpan Kumar Saha, son of Harinaryanpur UP chairman Babu Jugol Kishor Saha in 2001. Sawpan still remains traceless. Mandar also abducted his father Jugol Kishore who is also still missing.

A police source said Mandar was involved in around 50 abductions for ransom during 1996-2008.

He abducted two sisters--Hasina and Shilpi--in 1999 and they went missing thereafter.
A dyed in the wool badman, who long deserved an encounter with the Rab.

Robber, Gono Bahini hard boy killed in shootouts
2010-03-09
[Bangla Daily Star] An alleged robber and an operative of outlawed Gono Bahini were killed in separate 'shootouts' with law enforcers in the capital and Kushtia yesterday.

The robber Monir Hossain was killed in an encounter with the members of Rapid Action Battalion in city's Jatrabari area at about 2:15am, said Rab officials.

Police said Monir was wanted in at least 20 criminal cases in Demra, Jatrabari and Siddhirganj police stations.

According to Rab official, a team of Rab-10 conducted the drive when Monir along with his accomplices was gathering beside local Uddipan School at Sutikhalpar for committing a robbery.

"Sensing presence of the Rab, the robbers opened fire on Rab members prompting them to fire back that triggered a gun-battle. At one stage of gunfight the robbers fled the scene leaving the bullet-hit body of Monir," Rab official said.

Talking to The Daily Star, Banu Begum, wife of Monir, said that Rab officials picked up her husband on Sunday midnight after he came back from Dubai.

In another incident, Monzurul Islam Monju, 32, a regional leader of outlawed Gono Bahini was killed in a 'shootout' between his cohorts and police at Pyiarpur village in Kushtia sadar upazila.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of Detective Branch of Kushtia and Islamic University police raided GK (Ganges-Kabadak) canal at the village where Monju and his men were holding a secret meeting at about 4:15am, police said.

Sensing their presence, the gang hurled a cocktail towards them and also fired gunshots, prompting them to retaliate. Monju was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot, police said.

Outlaw held at Islamic University
2010-01-31
Police arrested an operative of the outlawed Gono Bahini from the campus of Islamic University Friday evening and recovered three bullets and three bombs from his possession.
"Outlaw" and "Islamic University." The two concepts just seem made for each other.
The arrestee was identified as Billal Hossain, 30. He is a cousin of Gono Bahini top cadre Ali Ehsan Kalu who is now holing up in India, police said.
Those top cadres - making trouble in many systems.
The arrest was made two days after police had arrested his younger brother Ali Murtoza Khasru, a student of Islamic University and also Bangladesh Chhatra League convener of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall of the university.
Clearly a family of ill repute with unfortunate ties to malefactors.
Police said they arrested Billal from the dormitory area as he was organising other operatives of Gono Bahini to create anarchy on the campus following the arrest of Khasru.

As per his statement, police later recovered an Indian pistol, three bullets and three bombs from a bag kept in a bush near the main gate of the university.
Bush as bagman?
Police claimed that Billal went to the university campus Thursday morning, a day after Khasru was arrested and organised his men. They put up a blockade on the Kushtia-Khulna highway for about two hours and padlocked the university main gate and administration building.

Police produced Billal before the district judicial magistrate court and sought a five-day remand. The court sent him to jail.
Off to da slammer witcha!

Top outlaw 'killed' in India
2009-11-19
The Indian version of an Rab shoot-out?
General Secretary of outlawed Gono Bahini, Azibor Rahman alias Azibor Chairman was killed by his rivals in India Tuesday night, his family and local sources claimed.
It starts promisingly...
However, police could not confirm the incident. An assistant police super told the Daily Star that they have heard the incident and are crosschecking it.
Of course, since it is an intra-criminal shoot-out, the police would know nothing.
The incident took place at Dhankhola village in Dhankhola thana in Nadia district of West Bengal, unconfirmed sources said.

According to sources, armed men riding a microbus came to Haskhali bazar and swooped on Azibor while he was talking on his cellphone at about 9:30pm.
Awfully early. There are still good citizens about at that hour. Something to work on, guys.
The gang picked up Azibor, took him to Dhankhola and killed him.
"Howdy, Azibor! Fine evening, ain't it. Say, why don't youse come wit us?"
Family sources claimed that they have heard the same details of killing of Azibor.

Azibor's mobile is in the hand of his killers and when his family members tried to contact him, the receivers identified themselves as police, family sources said
A surprise ending! Somebody is lying. But who?

Top outlaw killed by rivals in India
2009-11-15
[Bangla Daily Star] One of the top leaders of outlawed Gono Bahini Obaidul Islam alias Obaidul Haq alias Lal Bhai was shot dead in India by his rival cadres Friday night.

Leader of the rival faction Azibor alias Azibor chairman claimed responsibility for the killing over telephone. Both Azibor and Obaidul were hiding in West Bengal.

The incident took place at Bagdi village of Karincha in 24 Parganas, West Bengal. Sources said a faction of the outfit led by Ahsanul Haq alias Mandar shot Obaidul on a street around 9:30pm while he was talking on his cellphone. He died on the spot.

The killers shot 5/6 rounds with a 9mm pistol, sources said.

On information, police of Karincha rushed to the spot and took the body to 24 Parganas Sadar Hospital.

Shahabuddin Khan, superintendent of police in Kushtia, yesterday told The Daily Star that they have informed the higher authorities in Dhaka about the matter.

According to the sources, the killing took place over rivalry between two factions of the outfit.

Different sources said Azibor and Obaidul recently came into conflict over the activities of the outfit.

One of Obaidul's family members said his wife was on her way to India to confirm the death.

Obaidul's rival Azibor, 58, is believed to be one of the founders of Gono Bahini. He was worried about Obaidul's recent activities including killing of his (Azibor's) cadres by decapitating.

In last several months, Obaidul oversaw a series of killings of his opponent Gono Mukti Fouz (GMF) cadres. His faction killed at least 11 GMF cadres -- five of them were decapitated -- between June 15 and August 19. Obaidul claimed responsibility for the killings by leaving notes in the name of "Lal Bhai" on the bodies. The group "Lal Bahini" evolved after his name.

The law and order in Kushtia deteriorated so much during June-August that it prompted the inspector general of police (IGP) and Rab director general (DG) to rush to the district on August 20. Rab and police jointly started a drive since then.

Out of 33 alleged cadres of different outlawed parties killed in "shootouts" with Rab and police, 18 were of Gono Bahini. As Azibor blamed Obaidul for such killing of men a conflict arose between them. They then fled to India.

According to sources, Azibor turned down Obaidul's proposal to bury the hatched rivalry between them and decided to kill him.

Another source said in a recent development, Azibor established a link with GMF chief Aminul Islam Mukul in India. This indicates that GMF cadres also took part in the killing mission.

They are Emdadul, 42, son Ibad Ali of Juripara in Sailkupa upazila of Jhenidah and Moinuddin, 30, son of Yusuf Mollah of Pyirapur in Sadar upazila of Kushtia district.

Acting on a tip-off, detective branch (DB) of police led by ASP Alamgir Hossain raided a banana field of the village at about 11:40pm when a group of the outlawed party cadres was holding a meeting.

They caught two of them while some other cadres managed to flee. Police recovered eight powerful bombs from the spot.

Police at a press briefing held at 1:30am at Police Lines said the arrestees have admitted their involvement in the outfit.

Meanwhile, Purbo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP-ML) Lal Pataka faction Suja Uddin alias Joy Babu, arrested on Saturday, was taken on a five-day remand yesterday while two journalists--Atiq and Mohsin Ali--were sent to jail in two extortion cases filed against them.

Suja's father and one brother, arrested in the case, were also sent to jail.

Chuadanga police on Saturday evening produced Suja and the two journalists before a judicial magistrate court in the extortion case filed by Ramjan Ali, a member of Karpasdanga Union Parishad of Chuadanga.

Suja Uddin and the two local journalists were arrested from Chuadanga and Meherpur districts on Saturday.

According to police, Suja using the name, Joy Babu, had been demanding extortion from people in Chuadanga and Meherpur for last several months.

Following Suja's confessional statement, police picked up Atiar Rahman Atiq and Mohsin Ali from their residences. Both are local correspondents of Chuadanga based daily Mathabhanga.

Quoting Suja, police said the two journalists were assisting him in collecting toll in their areas and sharing the booty with him.

Rab members recovered one LG and three bullets from there.

Moktar was accused in a number of cases, including three murders, Rab sources said.
