PIA on verge of collapse, says airline director
2023-09-14
[GEO.TV] Pakistain International Airlines (PIA) is on the verge of collapse as a top official of the national flag carrier has warned that flight operations are feared to be suspended by September 15 if emergency funds are not provided, Geo News has learnt.

Speaking to Geo News on Wednesday, a senior director of the national flag carrier said the number of operational planes had been reduced to 16 from 23 which led to the cancellation of several flights.

The official said aircraft manufacturers — Boeing and Airbus — have also suspended spare parts supplies to the PIA over non-payment and the national airline was incurring losses worth millions of rupees daily due to limited flight operations.

The official also revealed that a PIA plane was stopped at Dammam airport while another four at Dubai airport over failure to pay for fuel.
"Mo didn't have to pay for jet fuel!"
The planes were allowed to leave on written assurance of the PIA, the official said, adding that the International Air Transport Association (IATA) restored PIA services after an emergency payment of $3.5 million was made.

The official warned that flight operations may be suspended by September 15 if Rs23 billion were not provided in emergency funds.

Meanwhile,
...back at the buffalo wallow, Yellow Wolf clutched at his chest and fell from his horse...
a PIA spokesperson said in a statement that all-out efforts were being made to save the flight operations from suspension.

A day earlier, sources told Geo News the PIA flight operations were severely affected due to a shortage of funds with a number of domestic and international flights being cancelled.

Saudi Executes Man for Attempt to Kill Security Forces

on Monday executed a man convicted of trying to shoot dead security forces and weapons charges, with alleged links to figures accused of terrorist activities, state media reported.

He was executed in Dammam in the Eastern Province, which has seen bouts of unrest since 2011 when mostly Moslem Shiite protesters emboldened by the Arab Spring uprisings erupted into the streets.

The demonstrators demanded an end to what they called discrimination by the Sunni-dominated government, a charge Riyadh denies.

The Saudi man who was executed "took part in two shooting operations against security forces with an intent to kill" and "in dealing and possessing weapons," the interior ministry said.

He was "linked to people wanted for terrorism-related activities", the ministry added in its statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency.

Human rights group Amnesia Amnesty International said in August that at least 40 people were executed between January and July in Saudi Arabia, more than for the whole of 2020.

More than 60 people have been executed this year in the kingdom, according to an AFP tally based on official statements.

Saudi Arabia put 184 people to death in 2019, according to Amnesty, which has said it was the highest number recorded in a single year in the country.

Earlier this year, Saudi Arabia's state-run Human Rights Commission said it had documented 27 executions in 2020, a decrease over the previous year due in part to a moratorium on the death penalty
for drug offences.

Lashkar's plot to kill Hindu leaders, journalists: 3 operatives sentenced to 10 years in jail
2021-06-18
[ONEINDIA] A special court of the National Investigation Agency has convicted and sentenced three Lashkar-e-Tayiba operatives to 10 years rigorous imprisonment in connection with the Nanded Lashkar case.

Those convicted are Mohammad Muzammil, Mohammad Sadiq and Mohammad Akram.
The first Moe is named for a powerful emetic.
The case was first registered at the ATS Kalachowki, Mumbai following the recovery of firearms and subsequent arrest of the accused.

The probe found that the accused are members of the Lashkar-e-Tayiba and Harkat-ul-Jihad-i-Islami.

The case was then handed over to the NIA.

The probe revealed that Akram went to Saudi Arabia

under the guise of seeking employment as a driver with the help of another accused, Mohammad Abdul Majeed, a native of Hyderabad.

He settled in Riyadh and during his stay he was introduced to many members of the outfit including Abdul Hanzala, who is absconding.

Investigations also revealed that Akram and the other accused persons had held conspiracy meetings at Riyadh and Dammam to carry out assassination of Hindu leaders, journalists, politicians and coppers in various parts of India.

Akram was then sent back to India to execute the plan in cities such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Nanded.

He was assigned the job to identify suitable targets.

In June 2021, they had travelled to Hyderabad to meet one Obaid-ur-Rehman for the identification of suitable targets and plan the attack, the NIA said.

Examination of Israeli-owned ship indicates Gulf blast was caused by mines — TV
2021-03-01
[IsraelTimes] An examination of damage to an Israeli-owned fat merchantman currently docked in Dubai indicates a kaboom that hit it in the Gulf of Oman was caused by mines covertly attached to the ship, according to a Sunday TV report.

Channel 13 news did not cite sources for the report, which contradicted earlier reported assessments in Israel that that blast was caused by missiles. An Israeli team is believed to be in Dubai to examine the ship following the suspected attack. The ship is undergoing repairs in Dubai.

Limpet mines are a type of naval explosive that attach to targets using magnets. The report speculated that the mines could have been attached to the ship’s hull during a stop at a port and later set off.

The network said that Israel increasingly believes a naval force from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was behind the attack. Channel 12 news raised the possibility that the earth-shattering kaboom was the work of a commando team in a fast boat that attached explosives to the ship.

As a result of the earth-shattering kaboom, Israeli ships were instructed to increase alertness and change their typical conduct in an attempt to evade potential problems, Channel 12 said. The exact instructions were not revealed for security reasons.

The MV Helios Ray, a vehicle carrier, was traveling from the Saudi port of Dammam to Singapore when the blast occurred on Thursday.

The crew was unharmed in the blast, but the vessel sustained two holes on its port side and two on its starboard side just above the waterline, according to American defense officials.

and the United States, or because the ship’s ownership is Israeli."

The site quoted a U.S. intelligence expert as asserting that "the ship did not hit a marine mine, but was hit from the surface of the water."

The British Maritime Trade Operations Authority and a maritime security company, said that a ship was exposed to a kaboom in the Gulf of Oman on Thursday.

The London-based Dryad Global Group said, "The ship in question is the MV Helios Ray, a vehicle transport vessel owned by Helios Ray Ltd., an Israeli company registered in the Isle of Man."

The ship was said to be traveling from Singapore to Dammam in Soddy Arabia

Defense officials believe explosion on Israeli cargo ship in Gulf cause by missile attack

[IsraelTimes] Channel 13 news reports that Israeli defense officials estimate that a kaboom on an Israeli ship in the Gulf of Oman yesterday was caused by two Iranian missiles.

The estimates are consistent with what a senior US official told Rooters last night, saying it was not an incident below sea level, meaning a mine, but above it, likely meaning a missile attack.

Such a strike would be a major escalation, as it would signal an Iranian military attack against a completely civilian target, without military or security affiliation with the State of Israel.

An Nahar adds:
An explosion struck an Israeli-owned fat merchantman sailing out of the Middle East on Friday, an unexplained blast renewing concerns about ship security in the region amid escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran.

The crew and vessel were safe, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, which is run by the British navy. The explosion in the Gulf of Oman forced the vessel to head to the nearest port.

Dryad Global, a maritime intelligence firm, identified the stricken vessel as the MV Helios Ray, a Bahamian-flagged roll-on, roll-off vehicle cargo ship. Another private security official, who spoke to The News Agency that Dare Not be Named on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters, similarly identified the ship as the Helios Ray.

Satellite-tracking data from website MarineTraffic.com showed the Helios Ray had been nearly entering the Arabian Sea around 0600 GMT Friday before it suddenly turned around and began heading back toward the Strait of Hormuz. It was coming from Dammam, Soddy Arabia

, and still listed Singapore as its destination on its tracker.

Israel's Channel 13, in an unsourced report, said the assessment in Israel is that Iran

was behind the blast. Israeli officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Capt. Ranjith Raja of the data firm Refinitiv told the AP that the Israeli-owned vessel had left the Persian Gulf Thursday bound for Singapore. On Friday at 0230 GMT, the vessel stopped for at least 9 hours east of a main Omani port before making a 360-degree turn and sailing toward Dubai, likely for damage assessment and repairs, he said.

The vessel came loaded with cargo from Europe. It discharged vehicles at several ports in the region, Raja added, including in Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, with its last port of call at Dammam.

While details of the earth-shattering kaboom remained unclear, two American defense officials told the AP that the ship had sustained two holes on its port side and two holes on its starboard side just above the waterline in the blast. The officials said it remained unclear what caused the holes. They spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity to discuss unreleased information on the incidents.

A United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
ship database identified the vessel's owners as a Tel Aviv-based firm called Ray Shipping Ltd. Calls to Ray Shipping rang unanswered Friday.

Abraham Ungar, 74, who goes by "Rami," is the founder of Ray Shipping Ltd., and is known as one of the richest men in Israel. He made his fortune in shipping and construction. According to the Nikola Y. Vaptsarov Naval Academy, where Ungar provides support and maritime training, he owns dozens of car-carrying ships and employs thousands of engineers.

The U.S. Navy's Bahrain-based 5th Fleet said it was "aware and monitoring" the situation.

While the circumstances of the earth-shattering kaboom remain unclear, Dryad Global said it was very possible the blast stemmed from "asymmetric activity by Iranian military."

In the tense summer of 2019, the U.S. military blamed Iran for explosions on two oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most strategic shipping lanes. The U.S. also had attributed a series of other suspected attacks to Iran, including the use of limpet mines -- designed to be attached magnetically to a ship's hull -- to cripple four oil tankers off the nearby Emirati port of Fujairah.

Saudi Arabia says 2 Shiite men killed by police were planning terror attack

More on this story from yesterday.

says two men who were shot and killed last week in the eastern city of Dammam had been planning an attack and were in possession of explosives that could have been used to deploy a boom-mobile.

The Presidency of State Security, which deals with counter-terrorism and domestic intelligence, says in a statement to the state-run Saudi Press Agency that the two Saudi men had been wanted by police. They were identified as Ahmed Abdullah Saeed Suwaid and Abdullah Hussain Saeed al-Nimr.

Saudi security said the two were killed on Wednesday in a shootout with police after refusing to surrender. The statement said investigations and the arrest of a third person showed the group had been planning an "imminent terrorist operation," and were in possession of 5 kilograms (11 pounds) of a highly explosive substance, a machine gun, two pistols and live ammunition.

Saudi Shiites, who are a minority in the mostly Sunni Moslem kingdom, make up the bulk of the population in Saudi Arabia’s oil-rich eastern region, including the city of Dammam where the incident took place.

Dammam, like other cities in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, was roiled by Shiite-led anti-government protests in 2011 and 2012. As the Saudi government cracked down on the protests, some protesters took up arms against police and were branded as "wanted" by state security. Some have since been killed in shootouts with security officers. Others have been detained, tried and executed.
