Chelsea Manning Attempted Suicide in Jail, Is Recovering, Lawyers Say

Attention whores gotta attention whore. Let HIM rot
[Gizmodo] Imprisoned activist and former Army intelligence analyst Bradley Chelsea Manning
...formerly Bradley Manning before he decided to become a girl. He, or she or whatever it was, was a misfit Army intel analyst who decided to leak all the secrets he could lay hands on. Sentenced to 35 years in Leavenworth, he was sprung on an Obamapardon in 2017....
attempted suicide on Wednesday in the Alexandria, Virginia, jail where she's been held for a year following her refusal to testify before a federal grand jury investigating WikiLeaks.

Manning's legal team confirmed the incident in an statement to Gizmodo. She is currently in the hospital and is recovering, they said. Manning was scheduled to appear before a judge on Friday regarding a motion to terminate the sanctions she's faced for refusing to testify.

U.S. prosecutors are attempting to "coerce" Manning into testifying about her past association with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange by keeping her in jail. Assange, who has been detained in London for nearly a year, is currently battling extradition to the U.S. where he faces an 18-count indictment, including alleged violations of the Espionage Act, for publishing documents leaked by Manning in 2010.

Manning, who previously served seven years in a military prison for the leak, has stated her ongoing defiance stems from her contempt for the grand jury process itself. In a letter to Judge Anthony Trenga last year, Manning said she objected to the grand jury "as an effort to frighten journalists and publishers who serve a crucial public good."

"I have had these values since I was a child, and I've had years of confinement to reflect on them," she said. "For much of that time, I depended for survival on my values, my decisions, and my conscience. I will not abandon them now."

A judge ordered financial sanctions against Manning last summer in addition to her confinement. The fines she's accrued now total more than a quarter-million dollars.
Fry this fucker up
Sorry to hear it. The recovery I mean.

US charges WikiLeaks founder with publishing classified info
2019-05-24
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The US filed new charges on Thursday against Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, accusing him of placing the United States at risk of "serious harm" by publishing thousands of secret and classified documents, including the names of confidential sources for American armed forces.

In an 18-count, superseding indictment, Justice Department prosecutors allege that Assange directed former Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning

in one of the largest compromises of classified information in US history.

The case presents immediate questions about media freedom, including whether the Justice Department is charging Assange for actions - such as soliciting and publishing classified information - that ordinarily journalists do as a matter of course. Department officials said on Thursday they believe Assange strayed far outside First Amendment protections.

The new Espionage Act charges go far beyond an initial indictment against Assange made public last month that accused him of conspiring with Manning to crack a defense computer password.

Wikileaks caused particular harm by publishing the names of people who helped American forces in Iraq and Afghanistan and US diplomats around the world.

The new indictment says Assange conspired with Manning to obtain and disclose classified national defense documents, including State Department cables and reports on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Prosecutors say his actions "risked serious harm" to the United States.

Assange, 47, is in jug in London after being evicted from the Ecuadorian Embassy in April. The US is seeking his extradition.

Wikileaks source Chelsea Manning fights grand jury subpoena

for a massive leak of US secrets to Wikileaks, has been ordered to appear before a grand jury, her lawyer said on Friday.

Moira Meltzer-Cohen said she had not been told what the grand jury was investigating, but US media have speculated that it might involve the criminal case against WikiLeaks being developed by federal prosecutors in Virginia.

Meltzer-Cohen said Manning had filed a motion to challenge the subpoena, which was immediately put under seal in the mysterious case.

"I object strenuously to this subpoena, and to the grand jury process in general," Manning, 31, said in a statement.

Grand juries, only used in the US and Liberia, are groups of citizens operating separately from courts who investigate whether to bring criminal charges. They can compel witnesses and suspects to testify.

"We’ve seen this power abused countless times to target political speech," added Manning.

"I have nothing to contribute to this case and I resent being forced to endanger myself by participating in this predatory practice." Manning, a former army intelligence analyst, was placed in durance vile

for 35 years in 2013 for giving WikiLeaks more than 700,000 classified documents related to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The revelations by Manning, who is transgender and was then known as Bradley Manning, exposed covered-up misdeeds and possible crimes by US troops and allies.

Her actions made her a hero to anti-war and anti-secrecy activists, but US establishment figures branded her a traitor. They also made WikiLeaks a force in the global anti-secrecy movement.

commuted her sentence, leading to her release in May 2017. Manning is scheduled to appear in front of the grand jury on Tuesday.

Rachel Dolezal Booked for Fraud Because the System Is Racist
2018-07-04
h/t Instapundit
First things first: I'm not going to pretend to know what it's like to be a black woman. Hell, unlike Bruce Jenner, Bradley Manning, and many other dudes in 2018, I don't pretend to know what it's like to be any woman. But I do know that in America, black women have to put up with a lot more crap than most other people. They have to deal with both racism and sexism, which apparently is a phenomenon called "intersectionality." (I've tried and tried to figure out what that word actually means, but I guess I'm not smart enough to figure out modern feminism.) Black women have to work even harder and smarter than white women and black men do, just to make the same societal gains. For that reason, among others, I hope the Democrats nominate Kamala Harris for president in 2020.*

But as tough as it is to be a black woman, it must be even tougher when you know in your heart that you really are one, but your DNA disagrees. Imagine waking up and knowing exactly who you are inside, but then being confronted with the wrong face in the mirror. What a nightmare.

That's why I sympathize with Rachel Dolezal. I think she's been unfairly maligned by #woke America. But I'm not going to make excuses for her when she runs afoul of both social justice and actual justice.

...I don't know what's next for Rachel, or Nkechi, or whatever she wants to call herself. It's just too bad that while every other trans identity group is being celebrated these days -- transgender, transsexual, even transspecies -- Dolezal's transracial identity is mocked and excoriated. The same liberal scolds who are still yelling at me for typing "Bruce Jenner" in the first paragraph can't handle Dolezal's transition.

People only hate her because they think she's invading their territory. Racial identity is so precious to them that they can't think of anything else. In 2018 America, you can be anything you want to be, unless you want to be a black woman.

Chelsea Manning loses Senate bid
2018-06-27
[Washington Examiner] Activist Chelsea Manning was defeated in a bid to deny Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md., renomination on Tuesday.

Manning always faced an uphill battle against the incumbent Cardin. She lagged badly in fundraising and faced questions about how active she really was on the campaign trail. But the Manning campaign did attract national attention and some enthusiasm from liberal activists both in and outside of Maryland.

Then known as Bradley Manning, the Army intelligence analyst was convicted of leaking classified documents. Manning was hailed as a whistleblower by supporters and condemned as a threat to national security by critics.

President Barack Obama commuted Manning’s sentence. Manning transitioned into a woman, took the name Chelsea, and became an advocate for LGBT rights as well as enhanced privacy protections.

Bradley Manning to the Rescue....of Maryland Republicans?
2018-01-24
[American Thinker] Bradley Manning, who goes by "Chelsea" because he thinks he is a woman, could end up as the unlikeliest hero in history for Republicans. The soldier-traitor-"transgender" activist recently announced a bid for Senate in the deep blue state of Maryland, securing a place on the ballot in the Democratic primary. Manning is challenging incumbent Senator Ben Cardin, the highest ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Wonder of wonders, Manning could end up handing a safe Senate seat for Democrats to the GOP, balancing out the loss in Alabama for the Grand Old Party.

Chelsea Manning files to run for U.S. Senate in Maryland

, the transgender former Army private who was convicted of passing sensitive government documents to Wikileaks, has filed to run for the U.S. Senate in Maryland, according to federal election filings.

Manning, who did not immediately respond to a request for comment, would be challenging Democrat Ben Cardin, who has served two terms in the Senate and is up for re-election in November. Cardin is Maryland’s senior senator and is considered an overwhelming favorite to win a third term.

Manning, 30, who is formerly known as Bradley Manning, was convicted in 2013 of the largest leak of classified documents in U.S. history and was sentenced to 35 years in prison. Last year, then President Obama commuted Manning’s sentence to time served and she was released from a military prison in Kansas.

says Central Intelligence Agency Director Mike Pompeo cannot "intimidate" her from speaking out on political issues.

The transgender activist made the comments in an interview with The Daily Beast on Tuesday, accusing the intelligence community of attempts to "stifle dissent" after she was banned from lecturing at Harvard University.

"What’s important here is that the Central Intelligence Agency and associated people in the intelligence community, they think they can stifle dissent, all forms of dissent, all across America and use academic institutions as a battleground," Manning said. "I’m not going to be afraid and I’m not going to be intimidated."

Harvard Disinvites Chelsea Manning, and the Feeling Is Mutual

has declined an offer to speak at Harvard after a dean at the university revoked his invitation for her to be a visiting fellow there.

Douglas W. Elmendorf, the dean of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, told Ms. Manning in a phone call at about 12:30 a.m. on Friday that the school was no longer offering her the fellowship, according to a source familiar with the conversation. The decision was made public shortly afterward.

Harvard had faced harsh criticism for including Ms. Manning, a former Army private convicted of leaking classified information, in the visiting fellows program at the school’s Institute of Politics. Ms. Manning was named to the group on Wednesday, joining Sean Spicer, the former White House press secretary, and Corey Lewandowski, a former campaign manager for President Trump, among others. Fellows travel to Harvard to meet with students and discuss politics and other topics.

Mr. Elmendorf told Ms. Manning, who was sentenced to 35 years in prison for providing classified information to WikiLeaks, that she was still invited to speak at Harvard. But he said that the school could no longer give her the title of visiting fellow. The school was concerned that the title implied an endorsement and did not want to come across as endorsing Ms. Manning and her views, he said.

Donald Trump: Chelsea Manning an ‘Ungrateful Traitor’

"Ungrateful TRAITOR Chelsea Manning, who should never have been released from prison, is now calling President B.O. a weak leader," Trump wrote on Twitter Thursday morning. "Terrible!"

Manning wrote that Obama should have been an unapologetic liberal, complaining that when he served in the military he heard people criticize the former president.

"The one simple lesson to draw from President B.O.’s legacy: do not start off with a compromise," Manning wrote. "They won’t meet you in the middle. Instead, what we need is an unapologetic progressive leader."

Obama Commutes Bulk of Chelsea Manning’s Sentence
2017-01-18
[NYTIMES] President B.O. on Tuesday largely commuted the remaining prison sentence of Chelsea Manning

, the army intelligence analyst convicted of an enormous 2010 leak that revealed American military and diplomatic activities across the world, disrupted the administration and made WikiLeaks, the recipient of those disclosures, famous.
First president we've ever had who was demonstrably on the other side.
The decision by Mr. Obama rescued Ms. Manning, who twice tried to kill herself last year, from an uncertain future as a transgender woman incarcerated at the men’s military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. She has been tossed in the slammer

for nearly seven years, and her 35-year sentence was by far the longest punishment ever imposed in the United States for a leak conviction.

The act of clemency could be seen as a reversal, at least in part, of the B.O. regime’s unprecedented criminal crackdown on leaking: The administration has brought charges in about nine cases, about twice as many as under all previous presidents combined.

At the same time that Mr. Obama commuted the sentence of Ms. Manning, a low-ranking enlisted soldier at the time of her leaks, he also granted a pardon to Gen. James E. Cartwright, the former vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and one of the highest-ranking officials ensnared in the leak crackdown.
