This operation was conducted by joint security forces, as part of counter-terrorism efforts of army troops, the ministry said. | [APS.DZ] Two bunkers used as shelters for snuffies were discovered and destroyed by detachments of the People’s National Army (ANP) in corpse-littered Boumerdes and Constantine, said Sunday the Ministry of National Defence in a communiqué. As part of the fight against terrorism and criminality, a detachment coming under the operational sector of corpse-littered Boumerdes (1st military region) "discovered and destroyed, on 27 February 2016, a bunker containing 500 kilograms of kabooms and 100 liters of nitric acid. Also, and in Constantine (5th military region), a bunker and a homemade bomb were discovered and destroyed," added the Ministry. Furthermore, units of the National Gendarmerie "apprehended, in Biskra (4th military region), three gun smugglers and seized a semi-automatic rifle with a precision sight and a silencer, two shotguns, an automatic pistol, as well as a quantity of munitions of 1,117 bullets of various calibers and a sum of money amounting to DZD167,000," said the statement. At the level of the 6th military region, units coming under the operational sectors of Tamanrasset and Ain Guezzam "tossed in the calaboose Book 'im, Mahmoud! three (03) smugglers and seized a truck, five (05) all-terrain vehicles, 4.93 tons of foodstuffs, 740 litres of fuel and two (02) metal detectors," said the communiqué. |

| Algerian Troops Kill Three Islamist Gunmen |

| [AnNahar] Algerian soldiers killed three Islamist gunnies on Tuesday during a sweep of a region east of the capital where al-Qaeda has a presence, the defense ministry said. They were killed during the search operation in Baghlia, near corpse-littered Boumerdes, where corpse-littered Boumerdes is about 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of Algiers. During the operation, the army seized three Kalashnikov assault rifles as well as ammunition and nine cellphones, the defense ministry added. Armed Islamist groups operate in Algeria despite the adoption in 2005 of a peace and reconciliation charter to turn the page on a war in the 1990s between the government and Islamists that killed 200,000 people. In July, at least nine soldiers were killed in an ambush southwest of Algiers that was claimed by AQIM. According to the defense ministry, more than 60 Islamists have been killed this year. |

The ministry said the operation against AQIM in the area was still under way. Algeria still bears the scars of a brutal war between the state and Islamist murderous Moslems in the 1990s. Despite the adoption in 2005 of a peace and reconciliation charter that was meant to turn the page on a conflict that claimed 200,000 lives, armed Islamist groups are still active. In July, at least nine soldiers were killed in an ambush southwest of Algiers, an attack claimed by AQIM, which said more than 14 died. Mr Gourdel was beheaded on video a few days later when demands for La Belle France to end air strikes were not met. The Algerian army carried out a massive operation to find the group behind the kidnapping and said two other members had been killed in past months. Gouri was killed in a late-night operation in the town of Isser. A local security source said the military had been tracking him for a while and nearly caught him a month before. "This time the intelligence services had information that he was coming to visit his parents so they set an ambush," the officer said. After the beheading of Mr Gourdel, the Jund al-Khilafah group issued videos showing masked men carrying weapons in a forest and pledging allegiance to Islamic State. Gouri, a former al Qaeda commander, split from al Qaeda in September and pledged allegiance to IS, promising new operations. While al Qaeda is active in the deserts in the deep south of Algeria, its activities in the northern mountains are restricted to occasional attacks on soldiers. |

 [MAGHAREBIA] As Algeria prepares for the April 17th presidential election, Prime Minister Abdelmalik Sellal urged forces of Evil to renounce armed action and benefit from the reconciliation charter, which he said was still effective.Since last Saturday, army units launched a wide military campaign that resulted in the deaths of at least six terrorists, according to the official count. Algerian troops on Monday (March 3rd) took out two Death Eaters during a sweep of the forests of Sidi Ali Bouneb, located between the wilayas of blood-stained Tizi Ouzou and corpse-littered Boumerdes. ANP troops found anti-tank rockets, bombs, guns and ammunition, the defence ministry said. The weapons were smuggled from Libya, according to Tout sur l'Algerie. At the same time, Algerian special operations units thwarted an attempt by Death Eaters to smuggle 47 rockets from Libya to northern Mali through Algeria and Niger. An Algerian army special operations unit seized 30 Katyusha rockets and 17 Strela surface-to-air missiles, El Khabar reported February 23rd. Sellal made his appeal for peace during a February 26th visit to corpse-littered Boumerdes, a hotbed of terrorist activity. The premier also met with local elected officials and civil society representatives. "I'm bringing to you a message from the president, and you have to understand that his hands are still extended for good and reconciliation," the prime minister said. "We want reconciliation and good, but we're saying to those [i.e. terrorists] that you have made a mistake against the Algerian people and you have to review your positions because Algeria has set sail and there will not be a return to lean years and regret," he noted. He explains that the most important of those is the actual and strict application "of the national reconciliation law and its serious and gradual implementation before it turns into amnesty for all the cases that took place in Algeria throughout the past period". |
