Zardari gets 'immunity' in Toshakhana vehicle case
2024-05-08
[GEO.TV] In view of the constitutional immunity of the head of the state, an accountability court in Islamabad on Tuesday halted its proceedings against incumbent President Asif Ali Ten Percent Zardari
...former president of Pakistain, husband of the late Benazir Bhutto, who has been singularly lacking in curiosity about who done her in...
in the Toshakhana vehicle reference.

At the outset of today’s hearing, PPP's lawyer Farooq H Naik — counsel of President Zardari — appeared before the accountability court and filed a plea seeking to halt the court’s proceedings against his client.

"As per the law, Asif Ali Zardari has presidential immunity. The case against Zardari cannot proceed as long as he remains in office," argued the lawyer.

Approving his request, accountability court judge Justice Javed Rana halted the proceedings against the president in the Toshakhana case.

The development came a month after the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), in a written reply submitted to the accountability court in the Toshakhana vehicle reference, requested to end the criminal proceedings against President Zardari, saying that he enjoys constitutional immunity.

It is pertinent to mention here that the NAB last month exonerated Pakistain Moslem League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif
...served two three non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf, then by the courts...

, dacoits in the Katcha area, and narcos throughout the province in close coordination with other provinces.

President issued number of directives including taking action against the drug mafia, curbing stolen goods trade, completing much-delayed Karachi Safe City project and others to restore law and order in Sindh particularly bucolic provincial capital amid rising violent mostly peaceful street crimes.

The development came during a special meeting chaired by President Zardari to review the law and order situation in the province at the CM House on Wednesday which was attended by the high-ups of the federal and provincial governments, as well as representatives of the security institutions.

Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Federal Minister for Science and Technology Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, provincial ministers Sharjeel Memon, Nasir Hussain Shah, Ziaul Hassan Lanjar, chief secretary, inspector general police (IGP), Director General (DG) Rangers Sindh and other bigwigs were present in the meeting.

The meeting was held to review overall law and order situation in the province, specifically the longstanding issues of Karachi street crimes, katcha bandidos, menace of narcotics, land grabbing, security of foreign nationals, as well as acquirement of facilities and resources.

The statement posted on president’s official account on X, formerly Twitter, said that Sanaullah will have the status of a federal minister.

"The president approved the appointment of Rana Sanaullah Khan on prime minister’s advice under Article 93-1 of the Constitution," the post read.

It is pertinent to mention that the PML-N stalwart served as the interior minister during the previous government, but lost in general election 2024 on the National Assembly seat (NA-100) in Faisalabad

Today, the lower house of parliament adopted a motion introduced by the NA speaker regarding suspending the two members.

The motion, which was read by Speaker Sadiq, stated that both MNAs used "abusive language" and approached the dais of the speaker in a "threatening manner", which was an "unacceptable" action.

PTI-led opposition alliance 'conspiring' against country: Baby Bhutto
2024-04-15
[GEO.TV] Firing a fresh salvo at the PTI-led “grand opposition alliance”, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has said that they are hatching a conspiracy against the country under the garb of poll rigging claims.

Bilawal made the remarks while addressing a public gathering at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh in Larkana on Sunday in connection with 45th death anniversary of former prime minister Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

“Many forces did not believe in democracy. They used to hatch conspiracies but President Asif Ali Zardari foiled their designs.”

Taking a veiled jab at the six-party opposition alliance, the former foreign minister said that some politician wanted to launch PNA-II even today.

The Pakistan National Alliance (PNA), a nine-party alliance, was launched in 1977 against the Bhutto-led government.

Without naming Imran Khan, Bilawal said that some politicians play with the fate of the country and people for the sake of “personal ego”.
Is any ego other than personal?
“Now they are hatching conspiracy against the country and its economy by beating the drums of [electoral] rigging,” he added.

His remarks came a day after the PTI-led opposition alliance — including Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP), Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) and Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) — launched its protest movement with a power show in Balochistan’s Pishin district.

The six-party alliance launched the movement against the alleged massive rigging in the February 8 general elections.

Stressing the need for “national reconciliation” to steer the country out of the crisis, the PPP leader said that the country would not progress if they do the “politics of abuses”.

He urged the politicians to stay in their ambit prescribed in the Constitution.

If the democracy is derailed, masses would be the first who suffer loss, warned the PPP leader. “Politicians utmost priority should be steering the country out of crisis.”

Addressing a joint presser along with Shujaat Hussain’s sister, Sumaira Elahi, in Gujrat, Qaisera Qaisera said: "Parvez Elahi still sincerely stands with Imran Khan."

At the same time, she blamed incumbent Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi for creating rift between her husband and PML-Q chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain.

Differences emerged within the Chaudhry clan — an influential political family in Punjab’s Gujrat — last year after Elahi announced supporting PTI founder Imran Khan while his cousin Shujaat was standing with his old friends, PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Ten Percent Zardari

and the Sharif family.

Referring to the upcoming by-election in PP-32 Gujrat constituency, she said: "I am surprised that 25-year-old milk-drinking baby Musa Elahi is contesting elections against 78-year-old Parvez Elahi."

Musa Elahi is the son of Chaudhary Wajahat Hussain, the younger brother of the PML-Q chief.

"Parvez Elahi, at the age of 78, is still brave enough to bear hardships," she added.

It is pertinent to mention here that Elahi has been lingering in prison since June 1 last year in connection with multiple cases registered against him.

Elahi was taken into custody by anti-corruption officials from near his residence in Lahore on June 1 in the Rs70 million corruption case related to the embezzlement of development funds allocated for the Gujrat district. Since then, the former Punjab chief minister was re-arrested multiple times after being released on the orders of the relevant courts.

'Zardari to take care of you as he does of me', Bilawal assures Punjab lawmakers
2024-03-09
[GEO.TV] In a bid to woo Pakistain Moslem League-Nawaz (PML-N) parliamentarians ahead of the presidential poll, Pakistain Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has assured that his father Asif Ali Ten Percent Zardari
...former president of Pakistain, husband of the late Benazir Bhutto, who has been singularly lacking in curiosity about who done her in...
, who is poised to become the next president of Pakistain, will take care of Punjab’s politicians as he does of him.

With the ruling coalition on the same page regarding Zardari as the joint candidate, the presidential election is set to take place in the assemblies tomorrow (Saturday).

Speaking to the members of the PML-N-dominated Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

Assembly, Bilawal said that he was there to ask the parliamentarians to vote for his father in the March 9 presidential election.

"Asif Ali Zardari will take care of you as he takes care of me," he said while heaping praise on the seasoned politician, who will serve the president’s post for the second time if he wins.

Bilawal, the former foreign minister, said that Zardari "meets everyone like he meets his own party's representatives".

The young politician said that the position of the president is a representative of the Centre — the federal government.

Speaking on the occasion, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz thanked Bilawal, saying that her party politicians would have voted for Zardari, who is the jointly agreed candidate of coalition partners, even if the PPP chairman hadn’t asked for it.

Maryam, the first woman chief executive of the province, also said that the PML-N and the PPP were competitors in the general elections but serious parties put aside their differences for the betterment and interest of the country.

"Asif Ali Zardari is our presidential candidate. All of us will vote [for him] tomorrow," she added.

Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was not given a fair trial: Supreme Court
2024-03-07
[GEO.TV] The Supreme Court of Pakistain on Wednesday issued its reserved opinion on the trial, sentence, and execution of the late prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto
...9th PM of Pakistain from 1973 to 1977, and 4th President of Pakistain from 1971 to 1973. He was the founder of the Pakistain Peoples Party (PPP). His eldest daughter, Benazir Bhutto, would also serve as hereditary PM. In a coup led by General Zia-ul-Haq, Bhutto was removed from office and was executed in 1979 for authorizing the murder of a political opponent...
, saying that he did not get a chance to a "fair trial".

A nine-member bench of the top court, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistain (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa, reserved its opinion on the 2011 presidential reference seeking to revisit the sentence, and execution of the Pakistain Peoples Party (PPP) founder and former premier Bhutto on Monday.

The bench also comprises Justice Sardar Tariq Masood, Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Yahya Afridi, Justice Amin-ud-Din Khan, Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhel, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Justice Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi and Justice Musarrat Hilali.

"Zulfikar Ali Bhutto did not get a fair trial and it was not in accordance with the Constitutional requirement of due process," said CJP Isa while announcing the short order.

The court’s decision comes after nearly 12 years after a presidential reference seeking to revisit the sentence, and execution of the PPP founder and former premier was filed by former president and PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Ten Percent Zardari
...former president of Pakistain, husband of the late Benazir Bhutto, who has been singularly lacking in curiosity about who done her in...
Bhutto was executed on April 4, 1979, following a verdict of the Supreme Court in a murder case that his party termed as "judicial murder".

The reference — filed by Zardari on April 2, 2011, under Article 186 of the Constitution — was taken up by the Supreme Court’s 11-member larger bench headed by former chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry which held five hearings of the reference.

On December 12, 2023, the reference hearing resumed under a nine-member bench headed by CJP Isa following a decision to fix an instant case under the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Act, 2023.

The SC had appointed amicus curies with expertise on the criminal and constitutional sides, seeking their assistance, particularly on the matter of maintainability of the instant reference, pending with the court for 11 years.

Apart from CJP, the other members of the bench include Justice Sardar Tariq Masood, Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Yahya Afridi, Justice Aminuddin Khan, Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Justice Hassan Azhar Rizvi and Justice Musarat Hillai.

The bench had reserved its opinion earlier this week after hearing all sides.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman to become Pakistan's next president, claims JUI-F
2023-12-04
[GEO.TV] JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman
...Deobandi holy man, known as Mullah Diesel during the war against the Soviets, his sympathies for the Taliban have never been tempered by honesty. Fazl seldom misses a meal and is now so large he has his own gravitational pull...
will become Pakistain’s next president no matter whether Pakistain Moslem League-Nawaz (PML-N) or Pakistain Pakistain Peoples Party (PPP) secures a majority in parliament following general elections scheduled for February next year, claimed a JUI-F spokesperson on Sunday.

Incumbent President Arif Alvi's five-year term ended on September 8 this year. However,
it was a brave man who first ate an oyster...
he is currently continuing as the country's head of state under Article 44 of the Constitution which allows the president to continue holding the office in the absence of the provincial and national assemblies — which were dissolved in January and August earlier this year, respectively.

The President of Pakistain is elected in a special session of the parliament, senate and all four provincial assemblies in accordance with Article 41 (3) of the constitution.

Alvi is the fourth head of state to complete his full term. The previous three presidents who completed their five-year terms were the fifth president Fazal Ilahi Chaudhry (1973 to 1978), the 11th president Asif Ali Ten Percent Zardari
...former president of Pakistain, husband of the late Benazir Bhutto, who has been singularly lacking in curiosity about who done her in...
(2008 to 2013), and the 12th president Mamnoon Hussain (2013 to 2018).

In an interview with a local TV channel, JUI-F leader Hafiz Hamdullah said if Fazl can be made the head of the Pakistain Democratic Movement (PDM), a multiparty alliance, then he can also be made the country's president, Geo News reported.

The little prince

[DAWN] FINALLY, there is a twist in the tale and we have some new political stuff to discuss. And for this, one has to thank Asif Ali Zardari (AAZ), whose candidness will allow us to spend a few days away from the usual conjecture over the PTI’s fate and PML-N’s honeymooning and what it will bring for different members of the Sharif family.

In a surprise interview to Hamid Mir on Geo, which stretched on for two hours, the former president spoke about all things politics, which ranged from the coming election to economic miracles that sugar and agriculture policies can bring.

But as I know very little about the latter, all I could focus on was the political stuff, especially his remarks about his heir and co-chairman, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari (BBZ). The 30-something, who has been heading this party for 15 years and has travelled the world as foreign minister, needs more training said the father.

The party can try and spin it as much as it wants, but this is a snub, BBZ will not find easy to recover from.

Indeed, in those remarks lay the basic dilemma of both Maryam Nawaz and BBZ, struggling to grow in the shadow of their respective parents. And it appears the growth simply means being sunflower-like and to keep turning their gaze in the direction of their fathers.

So Maryam blows hot when her father is in trouble and is silent when he is basking in the glory of a fourth victory. That politics and public opinion do not allow for periods of fiery leadership followed by dutiful shadowing, is lost on all political parties.

It was a snub that Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari will not find easy to recover from.

BBZ has been through similar phases of ‘now you see him now you don’t’, so much so that it has been hard for people to view him as an independent player, even when he gave up his part-timing for full-time politicking. And this image refuses to change because the party continues to treat him like a poster boy rather than the man in charge.

And I say this not because of his father’s assertion during the interview that he (AAZ) was the one who would decide the party tickets including the one given to Bilawal but also the manner in which the vote of no confidence played out in 2022.

Bilawal led a long march to Islamabad from Sindh, which was to culminate in the overthrow of Imran Khan
...aka The Great Khan, who isn't your heaviest-duty thinker, maybe not even among the top five...
. However, once he reached Islamabad, the big three (Shehbaz Sharif, AAZ and Maulana Fazlur Rehman) held a press conference and announced filing the no-confidence motion. And once that was done, few were interested in the speech BBZ gave as his rally reached the capital.

The attention and focus had shifted; if BBZ was really the man around whom the party revolved, this would not have happened.

The more public and direct snub by the father in the Geo interview is simply more of the same, in a way. And as South Asia happens to be a place where the children rarely ever break away from their parents, chances are BBZ will not defy this tradition (the Mughals proved an exception).

But there is a second aspect to the notion that the father and son are not always on the same page. Indeed, it is not a new phenomenon. Back in 2013, it was reported that BBZ had stormed off to Dubai because he didn’t see eye to eye with his father and his aunt, Feryal Talpur on ticket distribution.

This time around, it appears AAZ’s comments about his son needing more training were partially due to the latter being aggressive and vocal about the facilitation being provided to the PML-N and Nawaz Sharif. While the jury is still out on whether this is a serious rift or simply a good cop bad cop routine (which Hamid Mir brought up), this has to be seen in the larger political context.

The PPP has two distinct views within; while most of those from Sindh are satisfied with the party’s focus on palace intrigues, those who were part of the party in Punjab — and the few who continue to still be around — felt it needed to be more aggressive, especially in confronting the PML-N, the dominant power in the province.

However, this never became party policy and as a result, the entire anti-PML-N space was captured by the PTI, as Imran Khan proved indefatigable in taking them on. Be it voters or politicians who are not in the PML-N camp, they flocked to the former sportsman and his party.

This lack of aggression is a major reason the PPP stopped being a contender in the province.

However, the voices within the party which wanted BBZ to play a role closer to Khan’s were never completely silenced; especially as the party also saw the utility of using this opposition to PML-N whenever needed.

What we witnessed in recent days was perhaps a mix of both the subdued voices within the party plus the cynicism the party has become known for. And for reasons only he is aware of, AAZ decided it was a good moment to send a message to the right quarters by pooh-poohing his own party’s stand, embarrassing his son in the process.

That this snub will simply add to the struggles of Bilawal in the eyes of the voters, perhaps does not bother those who think palace intrigues and jorr-torr are easier ways of doing politics.

Politics is a ruthless game but who would know this better than the Bhutto family, which has paid a very high price for this.

If the past is any guide, the rift will be addressed and the family will soon be crooning ‘hum saath saath hain’. The picture Bakhtawar Bhutto tweeted of herself along with the father and son was a step in this direction — it is to be noted, however, that the picture included the former president’s sister and not the former prime minister’s sibling, who is also in Dubai if reports are to be believed.

Blood is not thicker than power. And who knows this better than the dynastic families of Pakistan.

Despite Zardari's trust, Bilawal remains wary of election fixing
2023-11-21
[GEO.TV] Pakistain Peoples Party's (PPP) top leaders' statements about the credibility of the upcoming polls apparently indicate contrast in the party’s policy as Asif Ali Ten Percent Zardari
...former president of Pakistain, husband of the late Benazir Bhutto, who has been singularly lacking in curiosity about who done her in...
is hopeful of transparent polls while his son Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari raises concerns about manipulation of the results and rigging.

A day after PPP Co-chairman Zardari said the country was moving towards transparent polls, PPP Chairman Bilawal hinted that the results of the poll might have been pre-decided.

"The country is moving towards transparent elections," Zardari had said in a recent statement amid PPP's calls for a "level-playing field", saying that the caretakers — appointed to oversee the country's affairs till an elected government takes charge — were favouring the Pakistain Moslem League-Nawaz (PML-N).

In his address to a rally in Nowshera on Monday, Bilawal warned that his party would not accept the elections if anyone interfered with the results, reiterating his demand for transparent polls.

"Parties with a 2/3 majority say they have reached an agreement [regarding upcoming set up]," Bilawal said, without elaborating further about who had made a deal with whom.

"There’s no use of an election if the results are pre-decided," Bilawal warned, noting that if anyone becomes the prime minister, then others will protest and hold sit-ins against the newly formed government.

Pakistain has a history of parties not accepting results and alleging outside interference after the announcement of results, with the winning candidates saying that the polls were transparent.

"We will only accept the choice of the people, not anyone else’s," Bilawal stated, noting that the only solution out of the quagmire for the country is "transparent polls".

The Election Commission of Pakistain has announced February 8, 2024, as the date for general polls across the country, with the PML-N also holding meetings with politicos to strengthen its position ahead of the polls.

In a similar stance, the Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf
...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations....
(PTI) has also called for a level-playing field, saying that authorities were not permitting the party to carry out electioneering as its chairman, Imran Khan
...aka The Great Khan, who ain't the sharpest bulb on the national tree...
, remains incarcerated.
