Continuing its crackdown on terror elements, the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) Awantipora conducted raid at Wopalwan Awantipora in connection with case FIR No. 01/2023 of GRP Awantipora, officials said today.

The raid was conducted in the residential house of accused namely Sheikh Sayurl Nisar son of Nisar Ahmed Sheikh resident of Wopalwan Awantipora and proper SOPs were followed, said an official.

"During the search, relevant information was gathered besides, Bank Pass books, Islamic Books of Jahad & other incriminating materials were recovered by the SIU Awantipora," he said, in a statement.

The official said that searches were conducted to collect more evidences of his involvement in other terror crimes.

The SIU conducted a raid in the Metroville area near SITE and arrested Jehanzeb and Mohsin on a lead provided by two already held suspects —Mohammed Kamal Khan and Abdul Qadir.

"Suspect Jehanzeb is a nephew of TTP commander Syed Wali, who is based in Afghanistan," said SIU SSP Junaid Ahmed Sheikh.

Al-Shabaab said in a broadcast on its own radio frequency Sunday that said its fighters attacked the hotel Villa Rose, which has a restaurant popular with government and security officials.

Scores of people were rescued from the hotel and security forces have launched an operation to remove the assailants, police front man Sadik Dodishe told state media.

Abdi Hassan, a government worker who lives near the hotel, told the News Agency that Dare Not be Named that he believes several government officials were inside the hotel when the attack started. Some were seen jumping the perimeter wall to safety while others were rescued, he said.

The hotel isn't far from the presidential palace in central Mogadishu, where a blast was heard, followed by gunfire.

Such holy warrior attacks are common in Mogadishu and other parts of the Horn of Africa nation.

The latest attack comes amid a new, high-profile offensive by the Somali government against al-Shabaab, which still controls large parts of central and southern Somalia.

Extremist fighters loyal to the group have responded by killing prominent clan leaders in an apparent effort to dissuade support for the government offensive, and attacks on public places frequented by government officials and others persist.

Hotels and restaurants are frequently targeted, as are military bases for government troops and foreign peacekeepers.

Last month at least 120 people were killed in two boom-mobileings at a busy junction in Mogadishu. al-Shabaab, which doesn't usually claim responsibility when its assaults result in a high civilian corpse count, carried out that attack, the deadliest since a similar attack at the same spot killed more than 500 five years ago.

Somalia: Parliament session cancelled over Al-Shabaab attack

The Senate and House of Representatives in Somalia have cancelled a joint session scheduled for today [Monday] following the Al-Shabaab raid in Villa Rosa Hotel, a popular eatery in Mogadishu which is frequented by government officials and other VIP guests.

The hotel under the Al-Shabaab attack is situated not far away from Villa Somalia, the official office and residence of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

Al-Shabaab militants are still holed up in the hotel with preliminary reports indicating that over 10 people have been killed and several others critically injured. The elite Danab Special Forces are on the scene and are trying to get hold of the militants who are firing from one of the floors.

Monday's session was meant to discuss the 2023 budget, which was approved by the cabinet last week after thorough scrutiny. The $967.7 million budget is set to expand the country's development activities besides helping with recurrent expenses including payment of salaries and operations.

Among those injured in the attack were Somalia's federal Minister of Security Mohamed Ahmed Doodishe, Abdullahi Bashir, a former official at the Ministry of Finance and the State Minister for environment Aw Hirsi, a common figure in the recently concluded climate change summit in Egypt.

The government has also announced plans to invest more in the security sector to enable the Somalia National Army to expand its territory by flushing out the Al-Shabaab militants. The government is also partnering with the international community to help in curbing sources of revenue for the group.

Judge irked by absence of witnesses in Naqeeb murder case

[DAWN] KARACHI: Expressing its annoyance over the absence of prosecution witnesses, an antiterrorism court on Tuesday directed the investigating officer to produce them on Aug 19 for recording their testimonies in a case pertaining to killing of Naqeebullah Mehsud and three others in an alleged ’staged’ encounter.

On Tuesday, the ATC-III judge was set to record the testimonies of the prosecution witnesses, including the complainant. However the witnesses failed to turn up before the court.

Advocate Salahuddin Panhwar informed that complainant Mohammad Khan, the father of deceased Naqeebullah, could not appear before the court to record his statement since he was ill.

The judge directed the investigating officer, SSP Dr Rizwan Ahmed, to ensure the presence of the complainant and other witnesses on the next date for recording their testimonies and fixed the matter on Aug 19.

The judge also directed the state prosecutor and complainant’s counsel Salahuddin Panhwar to argue on the bail applications moved by two former police officials ‐ assistant sub-inspector Ali Akbar and police constable Raees ‐ on the next date.

Khan Mohammad had lodged a case against the then SSP Rao Anwar and his subordinates under Sections 365-A (kidnapping for ransom), 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement), 344 (wrongful confinement for 10 or more days), 302 (premeditated murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender), 202 (intentional omission to give information of offence by person bound to inform), 114 (abettor present when offence is committed) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistain Penal Code read with Section 7 (acts of terrorism) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.

A second case was also lodged against Rao Anwar and others by the former IO for allegedly foisting false recoveries of illicit arms, ammunition and explosives on the victims under relevant sections of the law.

His counsel Salahuddin Ahmed moved an application in court stating that his client was not able to appear before the court to record his statement due to serious threats and mental torture by the companions/sources of accused persons, who had been continuously pressurising the complainant from different sources to not record his testimony in court.

It was stated in the application that the complainant had disclosed his grievances before the court in previous hearings that he, witnesses and his counsel were under serious threat due to influence of the accused persons.

The counsel further stated that earlier the complainant had filed an application under Section 21 (protection to judges, counsel, public prosecutor, witnesses and persons concerned with court proceedings) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997 and the court had issued directions several times to the inspector general of police for ensuring security to the complainant, his witnesses and the counsel.

Police lodge FIR as medical report of 15-year-old confirms rape

police chief Dr Amir Ahmed Sheikh ordered an inquiry into a video statement of the mother of the rape victim that went viral on social media two days ago.

The Gulistan-e-Jauhar police booked a 60-year-old woman on the complaint of the girl’s mother as she accused her of being "responsible for the rape of her daughter".

On Friday night at around 11.30pm, the police brought the 15-year-old girl for a medical examination at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.

Medico-Legal Officer Dr Zakia Khurshid carried out her medical examination, which confirmed that she was subjected to a sexual assault, said Police Surgeon Qarar Ahmed Abbasi.

SSP East (Investigation) Dr Mohammad Farooq told Dawn that the woman claimed that her daughter was gang-raped around one week ago.

The police detained five persons for questioning, he said, adding that since the complainant claimed that two of the suspects were unknown, the police would hold an identification parade before the family.

According to the FIR, the complainant woman said that she was living in Gulistan-e-Jauhar along with her five children and her husband worked in Islamabad.

She stated that since the last few days, her daughter remained silent and was not telling any reason about it. Two days ago, the woman said another daughter told her that in her absence, four persons and one woman came to their flat. The woman had acid with her.

The complainant said that the four suspects subjected her daughter to gang-rape and threatened her to stay silent otherwise they would throw acid on her.

The police registered the FIR against the four men and the woman under Sections 376 (punishment for rape) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistain Penal Code (PPC).

DIG East Amir Farooqi said that the complainant had earlier lodged a case against one of the suspects under section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the PPC on March 19.

The police had registered the case as she claimed at that time that she had relations with the suspect and he used to visit her apartment. Subsequently, the police presented charge sheet against the suspect in court.

Later, the woman had submitted an affidavit stating that on account of "some misunderstanding" she got the FIR registered against the suspect and asked the court to quash the case.

In the new FIR, the woman nominated a 60-year-old woman, who also lived in the same building.

The DIG said when the police contacted the elderly woman, she brought 25 other women of the same building to the cop shoppe stating that they were against the complainant and asked her to leave the place.

One of the suspects was an office-bearer of the apartment’s union.

SSP Farooq said that the union had asked the complainant woman to leave the flat on May 7. A few days ago, a huge fire broke out at a supermarket and some news hounds covering the fire incident recorded the woman’s statement which went viral on social media, he said.

The judge dismissed the bail application of all the suspects and ordered the arrest of the six applicants who had sought pre-arrest bail. Moreover, the main murder case has been fixed for hearing on January 30.

"They transported weapons in a boat engine from Quetta to Karachi through train service," he said, adding that the weapons and other material were dumped at a house in Baldia Town area of Karachi.

"The forces of Evil used fake computerised national identity cards," he said. "We are writing to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and Pakistain Railways to upgrade their security mechanism so that the facilities of the railways and the National Database & Registration Authority (Nadra) are not abused by terrorists."

He shared several photographs "recovered from the cell phones of the terrorists". One of the controllers was a cousin of Aslam alias Acho ‐ the alleged criminal mastermind of the attack ‐ while another was the brother-in-law of another high-profile terrorist, who is considered to be the second to Acho, said Sheikh.

Sheikh added that there were reports that Acho and some other high-profile forces of Evil had been killed in an attack in Afghanistan but he refused to believe the news until and unless he "sees the bodies or any solid proof".

It is an old tactic of forces of Evil to get themselves declared 'killed' to divert the attention of law enforcement agencies, he added.
