Hamas says latest cease-fire talks have ended. Israel vows military operation in 'very near future'
2024-05-06 | |||
[10News] Nike: "Just Do It" Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the key Hamas demands “extreme” — including the withdrawal of Israel forces from Gaza and an end to the war. The latest round of Gaza cease-fire talks ended in Cairo after “in-depth and serious discussions,” the Hamas militant group said Sunday, reiterating key demands that Israel again rejected. After signs of progress, the outlook appeared to dim. Israel closed its main crossing point for delivering badly needed humanitarian aid for Gaza after Hamas attacked it. The defense minister claimed Hamas wasn't serious about a deal and warned of “a powerful operation in the very near future in Rafah and other places across all of Gaza." Israel didn't send a delegation to the talks mediated by Egypt and Qatar, and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said that “we see signs that Hamas does not intend to go to any agreement." Egyptian state media reported that the Hamas delegation went for discussions in Qatar, where the group has a political office, and will return to Cairo for further negotiations on Tuesday. Another threat to talks came as Israel ordered the local offices of Qatar’s Al Jazeera satellite news network to close, accusing it of broadcasting anti-Israel incitement. The ban did not appear to affect the channel’s operations in Gaza or the West Bank. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, under pressure from hard-liners in his government, continued to lower expectations for a cease-fire deal, calling the key Hamas demands “extreme” — including the withdrawal of Israel forces from Gaza and an end to the war. That would equal surrender after the Hamas attack on Oct. 7 that triggered the fighting, Netanyahu said. Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in a statement earlier said the militant group was serious and positive about the negotiations and that stopping Israeli aggression in Gaza is the main priority. But Israel's government again vowed to press on with a military operation in Rafah, the southernmost Gaza city on the border with Egypt where more than half of Gaza's 2.3 million residents now seek shelter from Israeli attacks. Rafah is a key entry point for aid. Kerem Shalom, now closed, is another. The Israeli military reported 10 projectiles were launched at the crossing in southern Israel and said its fighter jets later struck the source. Hamas said it had been targeting Israeli soldiers in the area. Israel’s Channel 12 TV channel said 10 people were wounded, three seriously. It was unclear how long the crossing would be closed. The head of the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees, Philippe Lazzarini, called for an independent investigation and “accountability for the blatant disregard of humanitarian workers.” He also said Israel this week denied him entry to Gaza for a second time. The closing of Kerem Shalom came shortly after the head of the U.N. World Food Program asserted “full-blown famine” in devastated northern Gaza, one of the most prominent warnings yet of the toll of restrictions on food and other aid entering the territory. The comments were not a formal famine declaration. In expanded remarks as the full NBC interview was released Sunday, WFP chief Cindy McCain said famine was “moving its way south” in Gaza and that Israel's efforts to allow in more aid were not enough. “We need more ability to be able to get more trucks in,” she said. “We have right now a mass on the outside border, about enough trucks and enough food for 1.1 million people for about three months. We need to get that in." Gaza's vast humanitarian needs put further pressure on the pursuit of a cease-fire. The proposal that Egyptian mediators had put to Hamas sets out a three-stage process that would bring an immediate, six-week cease-fire and partial release of Israeli hostages taken in the Oct. 7 attack, and would include some sort of Israeli pullout. The initial stage would last for 40 days. Hamas would start by releasing female civilian hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. Netanyahu claimed that Israel has shown willingness to make concessions but said it "will continue fighting until all of its objectives are achieved.” That includes the stated aim of crushing Hamas. Israel says it must target Rafah to strike remaining fighters there despite warnings from the U.S. and others about the danger to civilians. An Israeli strike Sunday on the al-Attar family house in an urban refugee camp near Rafah killed four children, including a baby, and two adults, according to Abu Youssef al-Najjar Hospital. In later remarks for Israel’s annual Holocaust memorial day, Netanyahu added: "We will defend ourselves in every way. We will overcome our enemies and we will ensure our security — in the Gaza Strip, on the Lebanese border, everywhere.” The Hamas cross-border attack on Oct. 7 killed some 1,200 people and took 250 others hostage. Israel says militants still hold around 100 hostages and the remains of more than 30 others. Netanyahu is under growing pressure from some hostages' families to make a deal to end the war and get hostages freed. Israeli's air and ground offensive has killed over 34,500 people, according to Palestinian health officials, who don't differentiate between civilians and combatants but say women and children make up a majority of those killed. Israel blames Hamas for civilian deaths, accusing it of embedding in residential and public areas. The Israeli military says it has killed 13,000 militants, without providing evidence to back up the claim.
[NEWARAB] A Hamas ...a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth",... official said on Sunday that its delegation left Cairo after the second day of ceasefire negotiations with Egyptian officials concluded as the two warring parties accuse each other of sabotaging a deal, leaving hopes of an agreement fading. Israel has yet to send a delegation to Cairo and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that it would not agree to a deal which included the full military withdrawal from Gazoo Islamic Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. Then they bitched and moaned about genocide when their butts handed to them in the entirely justified retaliation. , as demanded by Hamas. Also on Sunday, Israel's cabinet voted unanimously to shutdown Al Jazeera network on Sunday taking its website and TV channel off air. In an unprecedented move, Israeli police raided the outlet's premises in east Jerusalem and confiscated equipment. Meanwhile, ...back at the Senate, Tremulus continued with his speech against Varius and his cohorts, watching as his colleagues dropped off to sleep one by one... Israel launched attacks on neighbourhoods east of Rafah which killed and injured several civilians, while jets struck areas near Gaza City and in central Gaza, Paleostinian news agency Wafa reported. Hamas fired rockets at a military base near Karam Abu Salem crossing which injured several Israeli soldiers and prompted Israel to shut the aid border. Hamas 'needs guarantees from US' that Israeli forces will not invade Rafah

Hamas bans West Bank dairy products from entering Gaza
2020-11-30 | |
[JP] Hamas has banned Palestinian dairy companies in the West Bank from selling their products in the Gaza Strip. The unprecedented decision drew strong condemnation from the Palestinian Authority and many Palestinians, who said Hamas continues to allow various Israeli products to enter the coastal enclave. The move was a "despicable crime," PA officials in Ramallah said, adding that it would deepen the split between the West Bank and Gaza. Trade and Crossings director-general Rami Abu Rish announced the ban in a letter to Karem Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom) crossing director Ahmed Musalam. The Kerem Shalom crossing is on the border between Israel and the Gaza Strip. Products from Al-Juneidi Company for Dairy Products and Food Products and Al-Jebrini Dairy & Food Industry Co. were banned, said the letter, dated November 22. The two companies are based in the West Bank.
Many Palestinians criticized the Hamas ban, especially since the decision does not include Israeli dairy products.

[ELUNIVERSAL] The Islamist movement Hamas, the braying voice of Islamic Resistance®, took control on Sunday, from the Paleostinian side of the only border crossing of goods between the Gazoo Strip and Israel , announced the Interior Ministry of the enclave and the Paleostinian press agency Wafa. According to Wafa, the Paleostinian Authority announced that Hamas "has expelled employees of the Paleostinian Authority in Kerem Abu Salem and has prohibited them from entering the crossing point," AFP quoted. Hamas confirmed that the employees of the Paleostinian Authority had left the crossing point. "The security forces at the Kerem Abu Salem crossing point have implemented procedures dictated by security imperatives," Interior Ministry front man Iyad al Bozum said in a statement. "The employees of the Paleostinian Authority at the crossing have refused to cooperate in these proceedings for a few days and today we were surprised by their departure," he said. Since expelling Fatah from the Gazoo Strip in 2007, Hamas has been controlling this enclave without opposition and, in 2017, in an attempt to reconcile the Islamist group agreed to hand over control of crossing points to the Paleostinian Authority. |

Six found guilty of involvement in Mumbai blasts of 1993 |
2017-06-18 |
[DAWN] MUMBAI: An Indian court on Friday found six men guilty of involvement in a series of blasts in Mumbai in 1993 that killed 257 people and maimed 800, the latest in convictions related to India’s most deadly bombings. The special antiterrorism court said the six had transported weapons and planted bombs, which targeted landmark buildings in the financial hub, including the main stock exchange. A seventh man was acquitted on lack of evidence. Investigators had said the bombs were ordered by India’s most-wanted man, Dawood Ibrahim, to avenge the demolition of the historic Babri mosque in north India by Hindu hardliners in 1992, during a period of religious conflict. All of the seven men are Moslem and were jugged Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please! between 2003 and 2010. Arguments to decide on the sentences would begin on Monday, said Deepak Salvi, special prosecutor for the Central Bureau of Investigation, India’s federal police, who said he would seek the maximum penalties available for each of the convicted men. The maximum penalty is death. "It’s a victory for the CBI, Mumbai police and the people of India who trust in justice," Salvi said. The six convicted men were Abu Salem, Mustafa Dossa, Feroz Abdul Rashid Khan, Taher Merchant, Riyaz Siddiqui and Karimullah Khan. Lawyers for the men were not immediately reachable. Legal proceedings against those accused of being involved in the bombings have resulted in more than 100 convictions, most of which are still winding their way through the legal system because of appeals and commutations of sentences. |

Syrian forces encircle Wadi Barada |
2017-01-20 |
[al-Manar] Syrian forces have reportedly encircled a militant-held area on the Damascus outskirts, where the capital’s water supplies are located. The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said that the route between Wadi Barada, and the adjacent militant-controlled Qalamoun region, was cut on Thursday. SOHR Head Rami Abdel Rahman said the government forces and allied fighters “besieged Wadi Barada” following “an advance from the north” the previous day. Home to the key Ain al-Fijeh spring, Wadi Barada has been rocked by fierce clashes since December 2016. The government forces have been fighting in the area against Takfiri militants, who have damaged the water processing facilities there and cut water flow to some 5.5 million people in Damascus and its suburbs. Last week, locals struck a truce deal with the Syrian authorities to allow the water pipes to be repaired. However, the agreement was called off after terrorists in Wadi Barada killed Ahmad al-Ghadban, a representative of the Syrian government, who would coordinate reconciliation talks between Damascus and militant groups. Meanwhile, an unnamed Syrian military source confirmed that the government troops had encircled Wadi Barada and that fighting was ongoing. “Ain al-Fijeh has practically fallen militarily. The armed groups are surrounded… and have no choice but to accept the settlement or the continuation of the military operation,” the source said. Hezbullies weigh in with their own load of bullsh*t [al-Manar] Syrian army managed on Thursday to seize control over Wadi Tamama and Abu Salem crossing in Wadi Barada area in rural Damascus, Hezbollah Military Media Bureau reported. The seizure tightens the grip against terrorists and totally isolates the barrens and Ifra village from Wadi Barada region. It also blocks the supply to armed groups from the barrens in subject. Syrian rebels advance in eastern Ghouta [AAWSAT] The Syrian regime has increased the pace of its military operations in the area of Wadi Barada which is situated in the north-western countryside of the capital Damascus. It has launched violent attacks, in coordination with Hezbollah fighters and militants loyal to it, on locations occupied by opposition factions in Ain Al-Fijah and the town of Ifrah in an attempt to crack down on the region and regain control of towns in Wadi Barada. Meanwhile, the opposition continue to advance, albeit slowly, in eastern Ghouta and they managed to kill a number of Syrian soldiers after tunnels used by Assad’s forces near the city of Harasta were bombed. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that the clashes that took place yesterday were concentrated in the vicinity of Ain Al-Fijah and on the Kafeer Al-Zayt and Wadi Allouz fronts. It added that the clashes occurred at the same time as “strikes carried out by warplanes and helicopters on the village of Ain Al-Fijah and the area surrounding it”. The observatory also said that the regime’s forces “targeted the area where the clashes were taking place with ground- to-ground missiles that it launched from its positions overlooking Wadi Barada”. An activist in Damascus named Diaa Husseini said that “attacks carried out by the regime and its allies focused, in the last few hours, on the towns of Ain Al-Fijah, Deir Muqrin, Ifrah and Kafeer Al-Zayt”. He told Asharq Al-Awsat that the regime is giving the factions two options; either they lay down their arms and become displaced or they will continue to be bombed and the dire humanitarian situation will deteriorate. |

ISIS arrests 3 on corruption charges Raqqa – The Islamic State (ISIS) radical group on Wednesday arrested three of its own jihadists on corruption charges, local sources in Syria’s Raqqa reported. Three members of the ISIS-led Department of Public Services, known as Diwan al-Khadamat, were arrested by the Islamic Police in Raqqa city. The group claimed that the arrestees have been involved in stealing thousands of dollars from the Diwan al-Khadamat and haven’t performed their duties “as assigned to them by the Caliphate leadership”. “Abu Hassan Kahreba, Abu Mahmoud and Abu Salem Awejan were taken into ISIS custody in Raqqa for stealing and refusing to follow the Caliphate’s rules,” media activist Khaled al-Omar told ARA News, citing an official from the ISIS-led Sharia Court. The city of Raqqa in northeastern Syria is a de facto capital for the ISIS self-proclaimed Caliphate. “ISIS is trying to show the people of Raqqa that anyone who violates the group’s rules will be punished, even if the perpetrator is one of their own jihadists,” al-Omar said. This is not the first time that ISIS punishes its own members on corruption charges. In March 2016, the group executed three of its own militants in Deir ez-Zor Governorate in eastern Syria on similar charges. A Tunisian and two Algerian members of the extremist group were publicly shot dead on charges of corruption in the city of al-Mayadeen in Deir ez-Zor. “The dead bodies of the three jihadis were crucified near the al-Baloum square in central al-Mayadeen on Monday evening,” rights activist Anass Jabir told ARA News. Jabir, who witnessed the execution, said that an ISIS Sharia official read a statement before the execution was carried out, accusing the three foreign jihadis of “robbery”. “The Sharia Court convicted the three militants of corruption for receiving bribes from local people in al-Mayadeen,” the source said. “The ISIS-linked Sharia Court insisted that the bodies of the three militants will remain crucified for three days, in a bid to terrorize its members,” the source reported. The three jihadis were members of the ISIS-led Islamic Police in al-Mayadeen city. The group found them guilty of exploiting their official position for personal interests. |
