Two killed, one injured in 'gunfights' with lawmen |
2015-02-18 |
[Dhaka Tribune] At least two men have been killed and another injured in separate incidents of alleged gunfights between law enforcers and miscreants in Gaibandha, Jhenaidah and Satkhira. Our correspondent in Gaibandha reports that a Shibir activist was shot and killed during what the local RAB claimed as a gunfight in the early hours of the day near Burirghar in Palashbari upazila. The deceased was Mostafa Manzil, 32, who local police confirmed as an active Shibir member. Ashraf Hossain Siddique, assistant director of RAB-13 Gaibandha camp, said a patrolling team of RAB was attacked with crude bombs on the Gaibandha-Palashbari Road at around 5am yesterday. A group of miscreants also opened fire at the RAB team, and the ensuing gunfight left Mostafa dead. Gaibandha police station OC Raziur Rahman said Mostafa was the primary accused in the case filed in connection with the recent arson attack on a bus that killed eight and injured 23 others in Gaibandha's Tulsighat. In Jhenaidah, 40-year-old Rafik Uddin alias Choto Tarek ‐ who the RAB claimed was a regional leader of the Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP-Janajuddah) ‐ was killed in an alleged gunfight in the sadar upazila. Squadron Leader of Jhenaidah RAB 6, Foysal Ahmed, said a RAB team carried out a raid in the early hours of yesterday following a tip-off that a PBCP group was holding a meeting near the Chutlia intersection. A gunfight ensued when the PBCP men sensed the presence of law enforcers. After the exchange of bullets, the body of Rafik ‐ who was reportedly an accused in eight cases including four for murder ‐ was found at the scene. However, the victim's mother Nabirun Nessa told our Jhenaidah correspondent that her son was earlier picked up by RAB men and was later gunned down. Her claims were also corroborated by two other locals -Sujan Hossain and Sarwar Hossain - who said Rafik was chatting with them beside the Dhaka-Khulna Highway at around 11am on Monday when a RAB van picked up Rafik. Local Awami League sources however claimed that Rafik was the vice-president of the Mahrajpur union union's Juba League unit. Elsewhere in Satkhira, an alleged robber - Shahidul Islam, 32 - was injured in a gunfight between his cohorts and police in Ramchandra area early yesterday. Police said acting on a tip-off, a police team raided a gang of robbers at around 2:30am. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the robbers hurled two crude bombs and opened fire on them, triggering a gunfight that left Shahidul injured. Shahidul's father Akbar Ali however claimed that the police had arrested Shahidul from the Judge Court area earlier on Monday and later shot him at night. |

Our Pabna correspondent reports, Paban was scrubbed in a 'shootout' between Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and his cohorts in Ishwardi upazila early Wednesday. Is that closer to Kushtia or Bagerhat? Hailing from Baraichara village of the upazila Paban was accused in several cases including murder most foul and robbery charges, claimed Rab. Rab-12 Pabna Camp Commander Lt Commander TAH Mahmud said acting on a tip off from the always reliable Mahmoud the Weasel that Paban was holding a secret meeting in the dead of night with his accomplices at a field in his village, they conducted a raid in the area. "Sergeant Rafiq! Load up the men!" Spider senses tingling at the proximity of the elite force, Paban and his associates opened fire on them, prompting them to retaliate with fire, Mahmud added. After nearly a 20-minute 'shootout', Rab found Paban lying in a pool of blood, he added. "Whose blood was it, Captain?" The accomplices of Paban, according to Rab, who opened fire on them, managed to flee the scene ... as though they had never been leaving three guns and eight bullets on the spot. On March 25, 2007
Siddique Pramanik, a Janajuddha operative, succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning hours after a bomb attack on him in Ataikula upazila of Pabna. Unknown assailants chopped Bishu Pramanik to death Wednesday afternoon at Halbaria Boalia bazaar in Santhia. Outlaw killed in 'shootout' with Rab |
2010-08-26 |
[Bangla Daily Star] A leader of Purbo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP) was killed in a 'shootout' between Rapid Action Battalion and his cohorts in Bagmara upazila early Wednesday. We have no idea where that is. The deceased Elahi Baksh Mithu, 40, of Baje Goalkandi village was the regional commander of Purba Banglar Communist Party (ML-Lal Potaka) unit in Chapainawabganj. I guess he won't be telling the grandkids what he did when he turned 40. 40 is a ripe old age for a Purba Banglar ... A Rab member, Havildar M Abdul Wahab, was also injured in the incident, says a press release. An ace bandage for the sprain and he'll be right as rain. Tipped off a tip o' the hat to Mahmoud the Weasel ... that PBCP cadres, who were behind police killing and arms looting incident of Dhalar Char in Pabna, were planning similar attack on Bagmara police, Gonna attack the police? No wonder Elahi didn't live to see 41 ... a team led by ASP Shahjahan of Rab-5 Bagmara camp raided Bagicha Goalkandi area at about 3:00am The best time of the night to where the group was holding a clandestine meeting. I'm disappointed: where were they meeting? Orange grove? Banana plantation? Palm forest? These details are important, you know ... Sensing presence of the elite force, "Hark! My spider-sense is tingling!" the gang opened fire forcing them to fire back that triggered a ten-minute 'gunfight'. Alas, only one body was hit in the 'gunfight' ... Later, Rab men found Mithu's bullet hit body lying on the ground. One behind each ear ... His cohorts, however, managed to flee the scene. As if they were never there in the first place ... A 7.65mm USA-made pistol, three bullets, one magazine, three sharp weapons and two leaflets were recovered from the spot. No shutter gun? Mithu was accused in three cases including one for Taherpur police murder, said the Rab. So his mother didn't love him ... |

2 'outlaws' held for cop killing |
2010-07-23 |
Police yesterday detained two outlaws in connection with the killing of three unarmed lawmen as they launched an intensive hunt in Pabna and adjoining districts to capture the assassins. After the arrests of Nader Pramanik and Wajed Ali, activists of Red-Flag faction of Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP), police grilled them intensively to get information. Nader was picked up from Najirganj of Sujanagar upazila and Wajed from Masumdia of Bera upazila around 3:00am. The law enforcers claimed to have identified some people involved in Tuesday's fatal incident at Dhalarchar of Bera upazila. "We've already detected the identities of some attackers," Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Rajshahi Range Mokhlesur Rahman said The Daily Star yesterday. A band of 10 to 12 outlaws directly took part in the killings. Police is almost certain that it was a planned assault, added the DIG. Police suspects a number of reasons behind the incident. Mokhlesur said the criminals might have attacked the policemen sensing trouble due to the lawmen's presence. Police officer Kafil Uddin served the Special Branch in the region for a long period and the outlaws might have personal enmity with him. There is a plan to build a large embankment at Dhalarchar involving huge amount of money. The criminals might have thought that if there were no police, it would be easy for them to extort the contractors, added Mokhlesur. Sub-Inspector Mojaffar Hossain of Pabna Police Station, who was in charge of Dhalarchar camp few months ago, said it is very difficult to distinguish the outlaws from the innocents here. Criminals from different districts use to take shelter here, as it is a remote place surrounded by rivers, added the SI. Chairman of Masumdia Union Parishad Samsur Rahman Shomej said outlaws often disturb local people, but they never dare to protest. Despite being an elected representative, Samsur even does not live at his village home. |

When Purbo Banglar commies attack | |||||||||||||||
2010-07-22 | |||||||||||||||
[Bangla Daily Star] Police are certain that banned Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP) gunned down three policemen in Pabna but could not detect why the outlaws attacked the unarmed lawmen.
The bodies of the slain policemen -- Sub-inspector Kafil Uddin, Nayek Abdul Wahed and constable Shafique -- were taken to their village home yesterday.
Inspector General of Police Nur Mohammed, Director General of Rapid Action Battalion Hassan Mahmood Khandker and other high officials accompanied the state minister. Police and Rab have planned a massive crackdown combining forces from different adjoining districts to arrest the attackers.
During a visit to Dhalarchar it was found that most of the houses in the village where the policemen were killed were empty. No male or female was found for a talk despite visiting around 25 houses.
The 32-square-kilometre shoal (char) near the conjunction of the Jamuna and Padma is home to around 25,000 people, mostly fishermen. The remote char has for long been used as a safe haven and hideout for different outlawed groups.
One of the three slain policemen walking behind the wood-laden cart identified themselves as police, but the gunmen continued to ask them to halt and raise their hands, he added. "Kafil Uddin sir argued with them and asked why they would raise their hands and who they were. The gang then grabbed them, dragged them away to Maldar Bazar and gunned them down with a slogan," Gani continued. "Another policeman luckily escaped as he was a little away to answer a call of nature. The gunmen did not bother about the cart driver as he passed the place a little earlier," Gani added. The cop with the weak bladder was either very lucky or.....something else. During his visit to the area, the state minister also vowed that everyone involved in the killings will be arrested and brought to justice. He sought help from people of the locality to help the law enforcers by providing information about the killers. Which explains why the people are no where to be found Later, the state minister along with the high officials of police and Rab took part in the namaj-e-janaza of the three policemen at Pabna police lines mosque around 2:00pm. Earlier, autopsy of the bodies were carried out at Pabna General Hospital morgue.
