'Violent' Columbia protester is heir to ad empire, has mansion, model babymama — and long rap sheet
2024-05-05
[NYPOST] One of the most violent mostly peaceful leaders of the Columbia University riots is allegedly a professional agitator and limousine liberal — the scion of millionaire ad execs who lives in a $3.4 million Brooklyn brownstone, has a model babymama and a stepmom dating John Cougar Mellencamp.

James Carlson
, aka Cody Carlson, aka Cody Tarlow, is "a longtime anarchist," a high-ranking police source said.

He bought his 2,893-square-foot, three-story brownstone with four wood-burning fireplaces and a carriage house in Park Slope in 2019 for $2.3 million, according to property records and online listings.

The provocateur, who has arrests dating back to 2005, is one of three children of prominent advertising execs Richard "Dick" Tarlow and his wife, Sandy Carlson Tarlow.

Dick Tarlow, died in 2022 at age 81 with an estate worth at least $20 million, court papers show.

The Shelter Island resident was known for his work with Revlon, Ralph Lauren, Cuisinart and Pottery Barn.

He was a loyal supporter of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and helped underwrite the school’s John Jay Justice Awards.

Sandy Carlson Tarlow, who died in 2003 at age 59, was known for defining the "public face of Ralph Lauren," according to her obituary.

By the time she and her husband sold her namesake firm, Carlson & Partners, to DDB in 2001 for an undisclosed amount, the company had more than 100 employees and was doing $165 million in business.

Dick Tarlow and his second wife — Carlson’s stepmom, Kristin Kehrberg — lived together in a $15 million Fifth Avenue mansion.

The widow is now dating John Cougar Mellencamp, Page Six reported last summer.

Carlson, 40, appears to have two children, including one with a model, blonde bombshell Kim Heyrman.

The four-bedroom, four-bath townhouse Carlson owns is currently being renovated, workers told The Post Friday. The property boasts a large garden with a deck and skylights.

Estranged relatives of Carlson refused to discuss him.

"We don’t talk to him. Leave us alone. He is out of our lives for so many years," a woman who answered the phone at his sister’s home said Friday.

Sheriff's office IDs 16-year-old kid accused of shooting 10 at event venue in Seminole County
2024-04-29
[CLICKORLANDO] A 16-year-old boy is accused of shooting 10 people at an event venue near Sanford early Sunday, according to the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to Cabana Live — an event venue and restaurant located at 4380 Carraway Place — to conduct an area patrol due to a large crowd at the venue, the sheriff’s office said in a statement. Shortly after midnight, the deputies heard gunshots coming from the rear of the establishment, causing the crowd to disperse, the statement reads.

It was soon apparent that several patrons had been shot, as well as that a security officer working for the business had successfully apprehended the shooter, the sheriff’s office said. According to Sherlocks, the incident began as a verbal altercation that escalated and resulted in a total of 10 people suffering non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, primarily to their lower extremities.

The shooter, identified Sunday afternoon as Christopher Bouie Jr., was booked into a juvenile detention center, the sheriff’s office said.
Aspiring rapper? Turning his life around?
Bouie faces charges of possession of a firearm by a minor, use and display of a firearm during a felony, firing a weapon in public property and attempted homicide, according to his arrest report.

News 6 is naming and showing Bouie due to the severity of the charges he faces.

Bouie’s arrest report describes the fight in greater detail, stating it was a fist fight that he was uninvolved in at the time he "turned around and pulled out a black and silver handgun (9mm) and began shooting towards a crowd of people." The security guard who stopped Bouie was able to tackle the teen and disarm him "almost immediately" after he began shooting, according to the report.

Of the ten victims who arrived at the hospital with gunshot wounds from the incident, several have indicated they wish to prosecute, the report states.
Street gang initiation participant.
A social media post made by Cabana Live states it had reserved the venue for a private event and that the shooting happened outside of the establishment, adding its employees were safe and the business was back open for normal working hours as it cooperates with the investigation.

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi: notorious terrorist or American agent?
2024-04-09

[Cradle] Ranked second only to Osama bin Laden, the US's most notorious declared enemy during the so-called War on Terror was Jordanian jihadist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the founder of Al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI).

But a closer examination of Zarqawi's life and his impact on events in Iraq shows that he was likely a product and tool of US intelligence.
If I was really, really smart I'd get fiftyother former intelligence professionals together and we'd all write a leter (I could help with the spelig) to state that this is utter bull droppings.
Neoconservative strategists within the administration of George W. Bush utilized Zarqawi as a pawn to justify the illegal US invasion of Iraq in 2003 to the American public.
Wasn't the sequence first invasion then Zark?
Moreover, he was instrumental in fomenting internal discord within Iraqi resistance groups opposing the US occupation, ultimately instigating a sectarian civil war between Iraq's Sunni and Shia communities.

Skipping down a bit.

Then, in January 2004, the key pillar of the Bush administration's justification for war unraveled. David Kay, the weapons inspector tasked with finding Iraq's WMDs, publicly declared, "I don't think they exist," after nine months of searching.
See? It wasn't that hard to prove a negative, was it?
That would be the late David Kay.

Video shows teen gunman lean out car window and open fire in shooting that killed Vegas mother
2024-03-29

[NY Post] Newly unveiled footage shows the moment a passenger fired a gun as he leaned out a car window during a drive-by shooting that killed a 43-year-old mother on a Las Vegas street.

Kevin Perez-Stubbs, 16, allegedly shot and killed innocent bystander and mother of one Shawna McCowan in April 2023 after she and a friend got caught in the gunfire.

She was walking with the friend and dogs on the same sidewalk as two teens toward whom Perez-Stubbs was allegedly shooting when she was shot, police documents reportedly stated, according to KLAS.

Two teens had gotten into a fight earlier at an apartment complex close by before the shooting erupted on the street.

New grainy surveillance footage obtained by KLAS this week showed McCowan and her companion walking up the street on the night of April 23 before a car with its headlights off drove toward the camera and two people were seen fleeing down the street.

A passenger then fired a gun while hanging out the window as the vehicle went down the empty street, according to the footage.

McCowan, who split time between Colorado and Las Vegas, was hit in the back and neck after multiple rounds were fired, according to police docs the station reported on.

The teacher, who also worked as a flight attendant, was rushed to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead, leaving behind a husband and son.

Four teenagers were charged with murder following the incident.

Accused gunman Perez-Stubbs, 16, his brother Johnathan Perez-Stubbs, 19, and Mezarius Finch, 17, were arrested last year, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

Earlier this year, Tyshean Tillman, 19, was arrested and charged with open murder with a deadly weapon and conspiracy to commit murder, the Las Vegas Metro Police Department said.

Tillman was the alleged driver while Jonathan Perez-Stubbs and Finch were passengers in the car, police have said.

Tillman, Finch and Johnathan Perez-Stubbs all took plea deals, though more information was not revealed because the records were sealed, KLAS reported.

Kevin Perez-Stubbs’ trial on murder and conspiracy to commit murder charges is reportedly set for June.

Curfew extended in Haiti's capital as gang violence continues to escalate
2024-03-22
[AFRICANEWS] The curfew in Ouest, one of Haiti's ten departments has been extended until March 23, authorities said Wednesday (Mar. 20).

Gang violence continues to escalate in the south-central department which hosts the jurisdictional seat of the capital city.

The escalating violence and unrest have severely disrupted daily life in Port-au-Prince.

The turmoil has left at least dozens dead, displacing thousands who seek refuge wherever they can find it.

"Some people who have no choice but to flee their home, some of them go into the school, the public school, to use them for shelter. And some hospitals, the main hospital in Port-au-Prince, is not really operational from our visit. The hospital is like empty. There are no nurses, there are no doctors to take care of patients and the patients don't go to the main hospital of Port-au-Prince to look for care," China Global Television Network (CGTN) news hound Wilner Bossou said.

The violence has deepened Haiti's political crisis and prompted the Prime Minister to pledge that he will resign, a key demand of the gangs.

Since late February, armed gangs have attacked public institutions including the capital's cop shoppes and the international airport which remains closed.

During the curfew and state of emergency imposed in early March, "the police are ordered to use all legal means at their disposal" to enforce order.

Armed groups have disrupted fuel supplies, preventing fuel trucks from entering the strategic Varreux fuel terminal in Haiti's capital and leaving gas stations deserted.

"As for the gas station, for the past two weeks, there was a gas shortage, which led multiple people, the population to bring cans, so they can find gas to stock in order to cope with the gas shortage. This is the situation today in Port-au-Prince, the capital, which is under attack every day. There is no day passed without listening or hearing some heavy, heavy, heavy attack and heavy guns shootings," Bossou reported.

Since the liquidation of President Jovenel Moise in July 2021, the grip of gangs and criminal groups has tightened. Haiti Prime minister had pledged to pass on the baton on February 7 this year but elections failed to materialize, leading to social unrest.

Henry announced on March 12 that he would resign once a transitional presidential council is created.

‘We Should Salute Them': Hezbollah Leader Expresses Gratitude for American Anti-Israel Activists
2024-03-16
[Algemeiner] Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on Wednesday praised Americans who are putting pressure on US President Joe Biden to limit support for Israel because they are helping the Lebanese terrorist group’s cause.

“Today, what many people demonstrating in America are doing … Of course, we should salute them and be grateful to them,” Nasrallah said in remarks translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).

In his speech, the terrorist leader highlighted the importance in his view of anti-Israel activism in the US.

Nasrallah went on to praise Democrats in America who are threatening not to vote for Biden in this year’s US presidential election due to his support for Israel in its war against the Hamas terrorist group in Gaza.

“The Arabs, the Muslims, and the non-Muslims, from among the other free Americans — Christians and others — in the Democratic Party who wrote to Biden: ‘We are uncommitted to vote for you.’ These people are very influential at this stage,” Nasrallah said.

These Americans are so important, Nasrallah explained, because Biden “is not afraid of the world, the international community, God, history, or anything. Biden now is afraid of one thing only — that his policy and actions in Gaza will lead him to lose the presidential elections. This is why he keeps debating, denying, and playing games.”

More than that, Nasrallah seemed to see an opening to help his cause, saying, “If the pressure and opposition [to Biden] in America continues, this may also open a door for hope.”

Both Hamas and Hezbollah are backed by Iran, which provides the Islamist terrorist groups with arms, funds, and training.

In its 1985 manifesto, Hezbollah wrote, “Our struggle will end only when this entity [Israel] is obliterated. We recognize no treaty with it, no cease fire, and no peace agreements, whether separate or consolidated.”

The terror group’s praise for American anti-Israel activists comes amid rising pressure in the US from segments of the Muslim community, the far left, and increasingly the mainstream left on Biden to lessen his support for Israel.

Nasrallah has not been the only voice calling for pro-Hamas and anti-Israel voices in the US to oppose Biden politically.

The day before the Democratic Party’s presidential primary in Michigan last month, Nihad Awad, the executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) delivered an address in which he called on voters to cast their ballots against the incumbent president.

“Our message [to Biden] is as follows: ‘Allah willing, our votes will make you lose the presidency,'” Awad said in remakrs flagged by MEMRI. “It is [also] a message to [the Democratic] Party: ‘You went too far, you listened to him, and did not draw the line, so you will lose the presidency.'”

US Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) supported the “uncommitted” campaign against Biden in Michigan and, when asked in late February, she refused to say whether she would vote for Biden in November. Tlaib has accused Biden of supporting a “genocide” against Palestinians by supporting Israel’s right to defend itself by targeting Hamas in Gaza following the terror group’s Oct. 7 massacre across southern Israel.

Recent letters from Democratic lawmakers to Biden include demands to cut off aid to Israel if it proceeds with its operation in Rafah — which is Hamas’ last stronghold in Gaza. Recent polls also show that a majority of young Americans think the Hamas atrocities of Oct. 7 were justified and believe Israel should “be ended and given to Hamas and the Palestinians.”

Ramadan in Gaza begins with hunger worsening
2024-03-13
They weren’t starving last October 6th.
[AFRICANEWS] Palestinians began fasting for Ramadan on Monday as the Muslim holy month arrived with cease-fire talks at a standstill, hunger worsening across the Gaza Strip and no end in sight to the five-month-old Israel's war on Gaza.

"This month of Ramadan is different from all previous Ramadans," said Ramallah resident Bilal abed Rabbo.

There was little to celebrate after five months of war that has killed over 30,000 Palestinians and left much of Gaza in ruins.

Families would ordinarily break the daily fast with holiday feasts, but even where food is available, there is little beyond canned goods, and the prices are too high for many.

In the weekly cabinet meeting, Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh said: "The month of Ramadan comes this year, while our people in the Gaza Strip are starving and bleeding due to the genocide crimes that continue unabated. We look forward to the intervention of the International Court of Justice to stop these horrific crimes, and we ask god to make the days of the holy month days in which these crimes stop and the blood flow stops bleeding, and to be suitable for saving the hungry and sick from the danger that kills them."

Some Palestinians believe that there will be an escalation against the Israelis during the month of Ramadan.

"I believe that martyrdom operations will increase and resistance will increase, especially with regard to the issue of Al-Aqsa and preventing worshipers, especially young people, from entering and reaching Al-Aqsa Mosque for the sake of prayer," said Ramallah resident Jamal al- Siuri.

Don Surber: The military-industrial complex changes subjects after Biden's speech
2024-03-13
[DONSURBER.SUBSTACK] The internal polling on Dark Brandon’s state-of-the-union speech must be horrible because Democrats and their deep-state go-fers in the media quickly changed the subject. First, they tried to make the story about Republican Katie Britt’s Karen-in-the-kitchen response to Biden’s speech, but no one outside DC cares about these responses.
I have multiple granddaughters, eight of them in fact. Maybe it's nine. Sometimes I lose track. Two or three of them are certifiable geniuses. Two have trendy but stupid ideas about sex. One of the eight is a twit. Katie's voice sounded just like the twit's (I do love her, but still.) I'm not sure if I turned Katie off, or Katie just turned me off.
Then Biden said he threatened Netanyahu with a come-to-Jesus moment.
Phrasing even dumber than Katie's.
Bibi did not take Biden serious and no one else did.
Who does? Has anyone ever, except in Delaware, which consists of beaches, farms, and Wilmington.
They did in Ukraine, back when he was VP…
I mean, what was Biden going to do? Make Bibi eat a ham sandwich?
Joe needs to have a come-to-Moses moment, but he's rapidly running out of time and the Red Sea is grumbling.
With the Ukraine war wearing out its welcome, the only diversion left was the uncivil war in Haiti. Suddenly riots in its capital became the most important story in the world!
Ukraina is a match between two pugs who used to be Great (Powers) and should both be looking closely at their pension plans. Da Russian pug longs for the days when he could have been Leonid Brezhnev without the stroke or the vodka, at least not too much of it.
We are sending troops to Port-au-Prince, something we failed to do to Minneapolis, Seattle and Portland four years ago. Apparently it is OK to give rioters in Baltimore space, but not in Haiti.
Dey're tawkin' about da pug dat's makes really good military hardware much of da time, but nobody can afford, to include us.
Haiti has replaced Ukraine as the 51st state, just like Dick Sargent replaced Dick York as Darrin on Bewitched. There was no discussion and no explanation. How important is Haiti now? The New York Times pulled down its paywall to report the story.
Haiti is in our sphere of influence, according to President Monroe and his Doctrine. He was born in 1758, which would make him 266 come April 28th. Joe's not quite that old, but he's pushing it for a guy who's still using up oxygen, no doubt contributing heavily to global warming or climate change or nuclear winter, whatever it is this week.
NYT said, “Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken
The guitar player who secretaries our state when not playing gigs at the VFW or the roller rink.
announced Monday that the United States would provide an additional $100 million in aid toward a United Nations-backed multinational security mission planned to deploy to Haiti, which has been overrun by gang violence.
We citizens should all get together and eat somebody. Maybe they'd give the Burg a hundred mil and we wouldn't have to have another bleg until I'm James Monroe's age.
“He also pledged an additional $33 million in humanitarian aid, bringing the U.S. commitments to $333 million.”
Wade-a-minnit! Great boils of fire! Blinken or possibly Nod musta calculated that on his guitar. My watch tells me that $110m + $33m comes out to $133m $143m, not $333m. I double checked that on my electric heater and it looks like good math, if not higher.
That’s awful nice of him to dig in his wallet and give Haiti all that money. I am being sarcastic. Don’t fact-check me, bro.
Pish! Take your shoes off and do the math again.
The money for Haiti is in millions not billions because to Democrats Haitians are just black people while Ukrainians are white. I believe in racial equality and say no money for either country.
I'm in favor of spending money on both. If the Soviet pug wins in Ukraina, then his next step will be to take someplace nobody's heard of to let the hackles relax before going for Bulgaria or Poland. Say goodbye to Moldova. Betcha Orban'll be surprised when that happens. Not that we didn't keep telling the Ukes the post-mortem Soviets were gonna invade, come a couple springs ago. Remember? The Ukes kept telling us to mind our own damned business.
Just who the money goes to is unclear. Haiti’s prime minister, Ariel Henry, fled to Kenya and is now in Puerto Rico to escape the violence.
How Haiti must be longing for the relative stability they had with Papa Doc and Baby Doc! There was a lot to be said for the Tontons Macoutes.
NYT said, “Leaders from Caribbean nations are leading a push to create a transitional council, meant to pave the way for the election of a new president and help restore stability to Haiti.
Papa Doc was Haiti's stability. There's nothing else to restore.
“Jamaican officials said that a proposal for Haiti was still coming together and discussions were continuing, but no plan had been finalized as of Monday.
"Pass de ganja, mon! I tryin' to think, but nuthin's happ'nin'!"
“With the government on the verge of collapse,
Actually the verge is in the rear view mirror and looking smaller.
the United States and Caribbean nations are working to come up with a resolution that would restore some order to the troubled nation.”
Nice one! Catch the difference between a "resolution" and "solution?"
Why is this our problem?
It's a shithole created by colored guys who don't speak English for colored people who don't speak English.
Hillary raised a lot of money for Haiti. Surely, she did not use the money to fund her 2016 presidential campaign.
Certainary not! A politician? An American politician? Do that? Oh, nevair ma frien', as they would say in Port-au-Prince.
Maybe she did. Trump said in 2016, “I was at a Little Haiti the other day in Florida. And I want to tell you, they hate the Clintons, because what’s happened in Haiti with the Clinton Foundation is a disgrace.”
Contribute to the Rantburg Foundation. I promise to piss it away on beer and ardent spirits!
I never understood why Haitian politics — as fiery as they are — are any of our concern. Ever since Haitians overthrew France 220 years ago, Haiti has been a shithole. Why pretend it magically is worth saving now?
It's very simple, really. Two little words: Miami welfare.
Well, we must change the subject to save FJB. Plus there may be some cannibalism involved. Or it may be propaganda. The Hindustan Times tried to tackle the issue.
They said it actually happened a coupla years ago.
The paper said, “Amid escalating gang violence in Haiti, a disturbing video has surfaced on social media, showing an alleged gang member engaging in cannibalism. ‘Disturbing footage of the Haitian cannibal gang eating body parts of one of their victims as he cooks in the fire,’ an Instagram post reads. The same video has been shared across other social media platforms, including X.
Biting someone else's nails?
“The video shows a man chewing on something that looks like a human finger. He then proceeds to tear flesh out of the leg of a person seen burning.
Which was the greater atrocity? Setting fire to him in the first place? Or gnawing his leg?
“The video has not been independently verified by any news agency. However, according to Times Now, agencies on social media have revealed that the video is two years old and has nothing to do with the current unrest.”
Cheeze! Two years ago? Howzat relevant? Except for the fact that they're still doing it!
You know you are in a shithole if you have to figure out when the cannibalistic act depicted in a video occurred. Was it the 2022 shindig or the one in 2024?
"Hey, mon! You seen mon oncle lately?"
"Last I saw, him and a couple tontons macoutes wuz lookin' for some Sweet Baby Ray's!"

The story may be propaganda, but from which side? Gang leader Jimmy Cherizier calls himself Barbecue. That gains him respect among this allies and fear among his adversaries.
You betcha. He gained lots respect when he started filing his teeth!
Then again, this may be anti-Cherizier propaganda. Who knows and who cares? This is none of our business. Unlike Cuba, no one has ever used Haiti as a missile base to threaten America.
But still, President Monroe woulda come down on them with both neatly stockinged feet.
Brian Concannon of the lefty Common Dreams outlet, agrees and wrote, “Haiti’s deepening crisis — armed groups launching an assault on the government, and the de facto prime minister on indefinite layover in the San Juan, Puerto Rico, airport — is a predictable consequence of 14 years of U.S. support for undemocratic regimes connected to Haiti’s PHTK party as it has dismantled Haiti’s democracy.
"Hey, Marcel! You spell 'democracy' widda 'o' or a 'au?'"
"Jean-Pierre, you know I can't spell! Dey don't teach dat at Hillary Clintaun Elementary!"

“Haiti has a chance at reversing this descent and returning to a more stable, democratic path, but only if the Biden administration will let it.”
Haiti got no chance at all, mon! But the Dominican Republic does, if we actually do something.
However, this does have the markings of deep-state interference.
"Actually doing something" would involve two battalions of Marines and an order to "Please form a line so you can be executed in an orderly manner!"
Concannon wrote, “Prime Minister Henry has not yet resigned,
Does it matter if he wasn't elected in the first place?
and the State Department denied reports that it demanded his resignation. But Henry has clearly lost the support of the United States, which for two years had allowed him to resist Haitians demands for fair elections. Absent Washington’s support, Henry has little chance of regaining power.”
On the other hand, he has a real good chance of getting barbecued.
“This dire situation is not only predictable, it was predicted.
I predicted this in 1942, and I hadn't even been born yet. I hadn't been thought of. Simple enough even for my pre-embryonic mind.
Haitian-American officials, Haitian civil society, members of the U.S. Congress, and other experts had been warning for years that the U.S. propping up Henry would lead to increasing tragedy for Haitians. The United States, which installed Henry in power in the first place, ignored these pleas and stood resolutely by its friend. With U.S. support, Henry’s unconstitutional term as prime minister exceeded any other prime minister’s term under Haiti’s 1987 Constitution. Levels of gang violence, kidnapping, hunger, and misery also reached unprecedented levels.”
Ah! Sentences! I like sentences. They describe things. Not reality in this case. but things.
The State Department’s official line on Haiti seems to back Concannon’s conclusion that we butted in.
"Marines! Ready! Aim! Kill everybody you see!"
It said, “When Haiti is more prosperous, secure, and firmly rooted in democracy, Haitians and Americans benefit. U.S. policy toward this close neighbor is designed to foster the institutions and infrastructure necessary to achieve strong democratic foundations and meaningful poverty reduction through sustainable development.
When I'm two inches taller, and my hair's grown back blond, and I'm irresistible to women, I'm gonna move to Port-au-Prince. They're both gonna happen at the same time.
“The United States provides substantial humanitarian assistance so the most vulnerable Haitians can better meet their basic needs in health and nutrition. Assistance for long-term development and institution building is another pillar of U.S.-Haiti bilateral cooperation.
Long term development and institution building have somehow avoided happening for the past 220 years. What are the chances they'll start now?
“Priority areas include support for economic growth and poverty reduction, improved healthcare and food security, promoting respect for human rights, building stronger democratic institutions, and strengthening the Haitian National Police (tonton macoutes HNP) so that Haiti provides its own security and can be a stronger partner against international crime.”
Who the hell writes that shit scheisse merda govno stuff?
Maybe Haitians are better off being run by cannibals than some Biden-like puppet of the American deep-state.
Eat the puppets!
But I really don’t care about Haiti.
He's not Haitian.
I would rather have our government stop the violence and looting in New York City and other Democrat-run cities that are deteriorating into shitholes.
Tonton macoutes in five... four... three...
Maybe we can work out a trade with Haiti. We give them Biden and they give us this Barbecue guy and we sic him on the street gangs of Chicago. He could single-handedly end hunger in his home country. Sure, that would make Kamala president for a while but her speeches in which she is a 10-year-old explaining things to a 5-year-old are priceless and entertaining.
Priceless and entertaining = incoherent
What’s not priceless is the $333 million we just promised to send Haiti so that Democrats can change subjects from FJB shouting like a madman before the whole country. That’s the real state of the union. Our government is run by an angry old fool who has nukes that he is willing to use on his own people.

US calls for investigation into alleged civilian killings in Ethiopia's Amhara region
2024-02-10
[AFRICANEWS] The U.S. is calling for an investigation into an alleged massacre of civilians in Æthiopia's Amhara region, where a local rights group says more than 80 people were killed last week following festivities between soldiers and gangs.

The U.S. ambassador to Æthiopia, Ervin Massinga, said Friday that the "U.S. government is deeply concerned" by the reports from the town of Merawi and called for "unfettered access by independent human rights
When they're defined by the state or an NGO they don't mean much...
monitors as well as an impartial investigation to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice."

Massinga said in a statement that the reported killings of civilians in Merawi followed "disturbing reports of other violations" in Amhara and elsewhere in Æthiopia, which is gripped by several internal conflicts.

A rebellion broke out in Amhara last April when the government moved to dissolve regional forces and absorb them into the federal army. A militia group known as the Fano launched a surprise assault in August in which they captured towns across Amhara over several days before retreating to the countryside.
The Amhara Fano militia was originally a youth group/vigilante militia that became active in the 2010s for rampaging against ethnic neighbours on the way to fighting against the then-ruling Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF).
Rights monitors have documented a range of human rights abuses by government forces during the conflict, including alleged extra-judicial killings.

On Tuesday, the Æthiopia Human Rights Council said it had received information "showing that massive human rights violations were committed" during fighting in Merawi on Jan. 29. It said more than 80 non-combatants were killed, mostly men.

The rights group said the killings "were conducted by moving from house to house" during searches. However,
facts are stubborn; statistics are more pliable...
it stopped short of laying blame for the shootings, saying it was unable to visit the site, and called for a further investigation.

Until recently, the Fano were allied with the federal military in the war against the Tigray People's Liberation Front
...which had ruled Ethiopia until the previous election, and were very unhappy they were no longer in charge. So they revolted, and for a while it looked like they would win...
in the neighbouring region of Tigray, but the relationship was always uneasy. The two sides began fighting even before the Tigray conflict ended in November 2022 with a peace deal.

Last week, Æthiopia's parliament voted to extend a state of emergency in the Amhara region in an attempt to quash the Fano rebellion.

Beauty queen wanted in Nigeria for alleged drug trafficking
2024-01-30
[AFRICANEWS] Nigerian authorities have issued a wanted notice for former beauty queen Aderinoye Queen Christmas, also known as Queen Oluwadamilola Aderinoye, in connection with alleged drug trafficking.
Remember that name. If you can.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) revealed that the ex-beauty queen eluded capture during a recent raid on her residence in Lagos.
"Dis is what my royal heels look like, coppers!"
"Whoa! Lovely heels!"
"Dainty feet!"
"Good turn o' speed!"

According to the NDLEA statement, the raid was prompted by "credible" intelligence suggesting Aderinoye's involvement in illicit substances.
"What's 'credible' about it?"
"Did you get a whiff of her as she flew by?"

The search, witnessed by estate officials, uncovered 606 grams of Canadian Loud, a synthetic strain of cannabis, along with an electronic weighing scale and substantial quantities of drug packaging materials.
"'Canadian Loud'? Really?"
"Hits you with a bang!"

Aderinoye, who held the title of Miss Commonwealth Nigeria Culture 2015/2016 and founded the Queen Christmas Foundation, has not yet responded to the allegations.
"Except maybe for a muted 'ho-ho-ho!'"
Meanwhile,
...back at the gunfight, another bullet hole appeared in Butch's hat......
another suspect arriving from Brazil was apprehended at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport last week for ingesting 60 large wraps of cocaine, as reported by the agency.

Old fatwa barring Muslims from voting for minority candidates sparks new fray ahead of polls
2024-01-21
[GEO.TV] As Pakistain moves closer to the general election, scheduled for February 8, 2024, controversial, disturbing, and hateful content has started popping up on social media targeting religious minorities.

The fatwa — a legal ruling by Islamic scholars — issued by a Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
-based seminary back in the day, regarding minority candidates resurfaced on Facebook and X platforms suggesting voters prefer Moslem candidates over the ones belonging to minorities.

The fatwa was issued by Jamia Uloom Islamia, New Town, famously known as Jamia Binori Town, which is located near the Guru Mandir area.

The religious school is considered one of the most influential seminaries in the city.

Chaman Lal, a minority rights activist, shared an image of the undated decree on Facebook stating: "A Fatwa is issued that, it is permissible to take votes from the population of more than one million minorities, but today a fatwa has been issued that it is not permissible to vote for minority candidates in the general election."

The Fatwa was released after the query: "Is it permitted under Islamic laws to vote for a non-Moslem candidate?"

The query further added that a major political party had nominated a Hindu for the general seat in the presence of a better Moslem candidate even though there were reserved seats for non-Moslems.

"The public wants to know whether voting for a non-Moslem in this situation is permissible or not from the Islamic point of view, or is there a third option?"

In response, the fatwa said: "The vote should be given to a candidate who has the required qualifications and ability, his party manifesto must also be correct and about whom there's satisfaction that he can take better steps for the people of their constituency, religiously and secularly. And because the non-Moslem candidate does not live up to these standards; it is better to vote for a Moslem candidate."
