CUNY college scraps Hillel Memorial Day event over anti-Israel protest, security fears
2024-05-18
[IsraelTimes] Brooklyn’s Kingsborough Community College cancels gathering after request for more security; Baruch College nixes Independence Day event after Hillel refuses alternative locations

A branch of the City University of New York canceled an event organized by Jewish campus group Hillel this week marking Israel’s Memorial Day, citing an anti-Israel protest and security concerns.

The cancellation at Brooklyn’s Kingsborough Community College came following years of outspoken pro-Paleostinian advocacy across the CUNY system that has ramped up since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas
..the braying voice of Islamic Resistance®,...
war, along with longstanding allegations by Jewish groups that its administrators do not do enough to protect Jewish students. And they occurred shortly before a group of pro-Paleostinian activists staged an hours-long occupation of a CUNY building in Manhattan, even as the wave of pro-Paleostinian encampments at other schools is dying down.

"We felt saddened and dismayed that the college canceled our Yom Hazikaron event instead of providing security to protect us from threats," Kingsborough Hillel’s faculty adviser, Susan Aranoff, a business professor, told the New York Jewish Week, using the Hebrew name for Israel’s Memorial Day. "The college must protect freedom of expression for all."

The Hillel at Baruch College, another branch of CUNY, also said its event for Israel’s Independence Day had been canceled. The school told the New York Jewish Week it had offered alternative locations for that event, but Hillel declined to accept them. Queens College’s Hillel, meanwhile, did host Memorial and Independence Day events without incident.

A CUNY spokesperson said the university system is "committed to ensuring that every student and faculty or staff member is safe from violence, intimidation and harassment."

"We also reaffirm that everyone in our community has a constitutional right to free speech. CUNY is working with campus leaders to ensure all our community members are protected during school events," the spokesperson said.

Kingsborough Hillel, which serves about 30 to 40 students at the college in Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn, had planned a Zoom event with a former Israeli soldier and cybersecurity expert. The students attending the event were set to gather in-person on campus, where they planned to hold a memorial service and light a candle.

Ahead of the event, anti-Israel protest groups issued a call to rally next to the campus on Oriental Boulevard, circulating a graphic that said, "Students and workers say no to rehabilitating the image of war criminals."

Kingsborough’s Hillel asked the administration for upgraded security due to the protest. Instead, the administration opted to cancel the event hours before it was supposed to start, the college’s Hillel told the New York Jewish Week.

A Kingsborough spokesperson confirmed the event had been canceled due to protests "out of an abundance of caution to ensure safety and appropriate access to campus for our students, faculty, and staff."

A number of faculty asked the administration to reverse the decision to no avail, Hillel said. Jeff Lax, a Kingsborough business professor and outspoken advocate for Zionist students, said he requested a meeting and waited outside the office of University President Suri Duitch for 20 minutes while she was inside, but said she did not come out to speak with him.

The pro-Paleostinian, anti-Israel protest still took place, drawing around 30 people who waved Paleostinian flags and, according to a video by Lax, chanted, "Resistance® is justified when people are occupied."

The protesters declared "victory" after the event.

"The shameful event allowing a former high-ranking IOF soldier on campus, hosted by Kingsborough Community College and Hillel, has been SHUT DOWN!" a student pro-Paleostinian group posted on social media, using a derisive abbreviation for Israel’s military that stands for Israel Occupation Force. "Power to CUNY students and workers! Free Paleostine!"

The next day, on Tuesday, Kingsborough Hillel was scheduled to hold an Israeli Independence Day event on an outdoor terrace on campus, but the college ordered organizers to move the event indoors. A photo from the scene showed nine security guards stationed outside the door.

Meanwhile,
...back at the bunker, his Excellency called the chief of staff and complained that the artillery was keeping him awake...
at Baruch, the campus Hillel said on Instagram last week that the college had ordered the club’s Yom Ha’atzmaut, or Independence Day, event on May 2 "canceled" due to security concerns.

Baruch College told the New York Jewish Week that Hillel had been offered other locations for the event.

"The safety of our students remains our top priority," the college said in a statement. "Regarding the Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration, Hillel was offered two alternative spaces on campus. They declined the opportunity to hold the event in these alternative locations, choosing to cancel instead."

Baruch Hillel did not respond to a request for comment, but posted on Instagram that the school is "sending a strong message to Jewish students that they cannot adequately protect Jewish students, while the protestors spew hateful and intimidating language in our public spaces without any repercussions."

The post added, "Baruch College is silencing the voice of the Jewish students and their ability to celebrate their Jewish identity proudly and openly."

In the same Instagram post, the Hillel also uploaded video showing protesters chanting, "Baruch Hillel you can’t hide, we charge you with genocide."

Across the city, Queens College’s Hillel held a Memorial Day event on campus on Tuesday and an "Israelfest" event on Wednesday to celebrate Israel’s Independence Day.

The college’s Hillel director, Jenna Citron Schwab, said no protesters were visible — a shift from earlier in the academic year, when the school was rocked by anti-Israel protests, and an interfaith meeting between Moslem and Jewish students was marred by inflammatory rhetoric and shouting. In March, vandals scrawled graffiti on campus including swastikas and threats to Jews. Schwab said the atmosphere has since improved.

"Every campus has its challenges," she said. "Right now, we’re working closely with the administration to tackle the challenges that we’re seeing."

Separately, on Tuesday night, anti-Israel protesters took over the CUNY Graduate Center, in the first protest of its kind at the Manhattan university. According to video distributed by protest groups on the Telegram messaging app, the protesters occupied the center’s lobby, chanting the slogan, "Disclose, divest, we will not stop, we will not rest," which has become popular at student pro-Paleostinian protests.

The demonstrators pasted signs onto an adjacent library, renaming it the "Al Aqsa University Library" after the Moslem holy site adjacent to the Western Wall and atop the Temple Mount, Judaism’s holiest site. The mosque has been a flashpoint for conflict and is the namesake of Hamas’ title for its Oct. 7 invasion of Israel, which it dubbed the "Al Aqsa Flood."

Minutes after the CUNY demonstrators announced their rally at the Graduate Center, the protest group Within Our Lifetime, which endorsed the October 7 attack, sent out a statement urging its followers to "Flood CUNY for Gazoo

At 10:20 p.m., the Graduate Center’s interim president, Josh Brumberg, sent out an email to the campus community stating that he had emailed CUNY Chancellor Félix Matos Rodríguez about the protest, according to a copy of the email shared with the New York Jewish Week.

Brumberg said protesters’ demands included a meeting with Rodríguez, amnesty for other CUNY protesters, divestment from companies "complicit in the imperialist-zionist genocide," and cutting all ties with Israeli academic institutions.

Brumberg also said he had agreed to not discipline any of the demonstrators. Two weeks ago, more than 100 people were arrested when the NYPD cleared out an encampment at the City College of New York, another CUNY branch.

The protest at the Graduate Center dissolved that night, according to a statement from the school.

"After several hours of discussion, an amicable resolution was reached and the demonstrators left peacefully," the statement said. "The Graduate Center is committed to ensuring first amendment rights and freedom of expression while maintaining University policies to safeguard students’ right to an education and protect our community from harassment, discrimination, and vandalism."

Safieddine warns Israel 'Hezbollah ready to use new weapons'

Will they be as effective as the recent salvo from Iran, an embarrassing percent of which did not make it past Iran’s borders?
[An Nahar] Head of Hezbollah's executive council, Sayyed Hashem Safieddine, warned Israel on Friday that Hezbollah is ready to use new weapons in the battlefield.

Hezbollah has regularly fired missiles across the border with Israel over the past seven months, but has on Thursday launched its first successful missile Arclight airstrike

"The resistance on the southern border has proven that it has many options in the battlefield," Safieddine said.

Also this week, Hezbollah launched three anti-tank guided missiles at an Israeli military post that controlled a surveillance balloon flying over the border. They released camera footage afterward to show they had hit their mark. Hours later, the Israeli military confirmed that the spy balloon had been shot down over Leb

"We have multiple options that are guaranteed to succeed and to exhaust the enemy," Safieddine said. "If the enemy wants to continue the fight, we are ready to use new weapons," he added.

Hezbollah's use of more advanced weaponry, including drones capable of firing missiles, explosive drones and the small type of guided missile known as Almas, or Diamond, that was used to attack the base controlling the balloon has raised alarms within the Israeli military.

"This is a time of major changes," Safieddine said. "What is happening in Gaza, on the (southern) border, and in the region undoubtedly carries great implications."

"It shows the fragility and apparent confusion of the Israeli enemy," he added.

[An Nahar] Hezbollah targeted Friday a logistic military base in the occupied Golan heights with 50 Katyusha rockets, in response to al-Najjariyeh strikes.

The group said in a statement it has attacked the Tznobar base in response to the killing of two civilians in a strike on al-Najjarieh, near the coastal city of Sidon.

The Israeli air strikes on al-Najjariyeh killed one Hezbollah fighter and two Syrian children.

Hezbollah earlier on Friday launched "attack drones" on a command center in Ga'aton, in response to an Israeli strike on a car in Qana on Thursday that killed two Hezbollah members.

Earlier this week Hezbollah said it had targeted an Israeli base near Tiberias, about 30 kilometres from the Lebanese border -- one of the group's deepest attacks into Israeli territory since festivities began on October 8.

Lebanon's state-run National News Agency said "Israeli strikes targeted Najjariyeh and Addousiyeh", two adjacent villages about 30 kilometres (19 miles) from the Israeli border just south of the coastal city of Sidon.

The NNA reported "victims" without elaborating.

A source close to Hezbollah told AFP that three people were killed in Najjariyeh -- two Syrians and a Lebanese man.

Hezbollah said the attack was carried out with an "attack drone carrying two S5 rockets", which are normally launched from jets.

's Baalbek area, the group added.

Israeli warplanes meanwhile raided Wadi Slouki at the outskirts of the southern border town of Houla, al-Rihan, Sujod, and Aita al-Shaab, while Israeli artillery shelled Rachaya al-Foukhar and al-Khiam including with white phosphorus bombs. Shells also hit the Marjayoun plain, al-Owaidah hills and Yarin, injuring two herders in Marjayoun.

The Israeli army later said it had identified "approximately 40 launches" from Lebanon "towards the Golan Heights", causing "no injuries".

It added that Israeli forces struck the sources of the fire.

The army reported several more attacks from Lebanon on northern Israel, to which it said it had also responded with strikes. Hezbollah said it targeted the Zar'it barracks, surveillance equipment in the Jal al-Alam, Mount Adir, and Ramia posts, and a group of soldiers in Metula.

Earlier Thursday, Lebanese state-run media reported an overnight Israeli air raid on the Baalbek area, where Hezbollah holds sway, hours after the group launched an attack deep into Israeli territory.

"The outskirts of the eastern Lebanon mountain range, at midnight (2100 GMT Wednesday), was subjected to five enemy raids," Lebanon's official National News Agency (NNA) said.

The Israeli strikes "slightly injured a citizen" and caused fires, the NNA added.

A source close to Hezbollah told AFP that one of the strikes "hit a Hezbollah military camp".

Jordan thwarts Iran-led plan to carry out acts of sabotage in kingdom ‐ sources
2024-05-15
[IsraelTimes] Weapons allegedly sent by Iranian-backed militias in Syria to a Muslim Brotherhood cell in the kingdom that has links to Hamas

Jordan has foiled a suspected Iranian-led plot to smuggle weapons into the kingdom to help opponents of the ruling US-aligned monarchy carry out acts of sabotage, according to two Jordanian sources with knowledge of the matter.

The weapons were sent by Iranian-backed militias in Syria to a cell of the Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan that has links to the military wing of Palestinian terror group Hamas, the sources told Reuters.

The cache was seized when members of the cell, Jordanians of Palestinian descent, were arrested in late March, they said.

The alleged plot and arrests came at a time of sky-high tensions in the Middle East, with an American-backed Israel at war in Gaza with Hamas, part of Iran’s “Axis of Resistance” network of proxy groups built up over decades to oppose Israel.

The two Jordanian sources, who requested anonymity to discuss security matters, declined to say what acts of sabotage were allegedly planned, citing ongoing investigations and covert operations.

They said the plot’s aim was to destabilize Jordan, a country that could become a regional flashpoint in the Gaza crisis as it hosts a US military base and shares borders with Israel as well as Syria and Iraq, both home to Iranian-backed militias.

The sources did not specify what weapons were seized in the March raid, though they said that in recent months security services have thwarted numerous attempts by Iran and its allied groups to smuggle in arms including Claymore mines, C4 and Semtex explosives, Kalashnikov rifles and 107mm Katyusha rockets.

Most of the clandestine flow of arms into the country has been bound for the neighboring West Bank, according to the Jordanian sources. However, some of the weapons — including those seized in March — were intended for use in Jordan by the Brotherhood cell allied to Hamas terrorists, they said.

Jordanian authorities believe Iran and its allied terror groups like Hamas and Lebanon’s Hezbollah are trying to recruit young, radical members of the kingdom’s Brotherhood to their anti-Israel, anti-US cause in a bid to expand Tehran’s regional network of aligned forces, according to the two sources.

A senior representative of Jordan’s Muslim Brotherhood confirmed that some of its members were arrested in March in possession of weapons, but said whatever they did was not approved by the group and that he suspected they were smuggling arms to the West Bank rather than planning acts in Jordan.

“There is dialogue between the Brotherhood and the authorities. They know if there are mistakes it’s not the MB, only individuals and not MB policy,” said the representative, asking not to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter.
It’s never the official policy of the Brotherhooders to guide their youngsters toward groups following the strong jihad of the sword, but they are a feeder pipeline nonetheless.
Another senior figure in Brotherhood, who also requested anonymity, told Reuters the arrested cell members had been recruited by Hamas chief Saleh al-Arouri, who masterminded the Palestinian group’s operations in the West Bank from exile in Lebanon. Arouri was killed by a drone strike in Beirut in January in an attack widely attributed to Israel.

Over the past year, Jordan has said it has foiled many attempts by infiltrators linked to pro-Iranian militias in Syria who it says have crossed its borders with rocket launchers and explosives, adding that some of the weapons managed to get through undetected. Iran has denied being behind such attempts.

Top Hezbollah field commander killed in IDF drone strike in south Lebanon
2024-05-15
[IsraelTimes] The military says that more than 30 Hezbollah commanders have been killed in its strikes in southern Lebanon amid the war in the past seven months.

On Wednesday morning, in response to the killing of the commander, Hezbollah fired a barrage of some 60 rockets from Lebanon at northern Israel, mostly targeting Mount Meron, located some eight kilometers (5 miles) from the Lebanon border.

The terror group has targeted Mount Meron several times amid the ongoing war, launching large barrages of rockets at the mountain, as well as guided missiles at the sensitive Israeli air traffic control base that sits atop it.

At least one heavy rocket was fired at the Biranit army base on the Lebanon border.

Several of the 60 rockets were intercepted by air defenses, while some caused “minor damage” to the Mount Meron base, the IDF said.

Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the attacks, saying it targeted the Mount Meron base with dozens of rockets, as well as the Biranit base with additional projectiles.

There were no injuries, according to the IDF.

The terror group said the attacks were “part of a response to the assassination,” referring to Makki.

The strike on the top commander came hours after an Israeli civilian was killed and five soldiers were wounded in a Hezbollah anti-tank guided missile attack against a military position near the northern community of Adamit.
